its not always the lens, i mean yes some lens let in less light then most but it could be your ISO setting as well most people prefer to shot at 400 iso i dont go any higher then 1600 personally, add more light if shooting at low ISO or try to open ur aperture to the biggest it can get if its a stock lens i believe its 3.5 if im correct but just depending on the shot just look at ISO, lighting and what aperture your shooting at
Buy some lights! If money is an issue try to find a well lit area to shoot in and do your best. Crank the ISO way up if you have to, or shoot with a low f-stop. You can probably drop the shutter speed a little but I would try to leave it alone.
There is a button labeled "ISO" on the top right side of the camera near the shutter. Press it once and then use the scroll to select your ISO, then press it again to set it.
It's possible that your camera is not hitting the target bit rate because it is not writing fast enough. What kind of lens are you using? Try keeping it wide open. Does it take stills effectively? Could be dropping pixels. But yeah, you need a better card for sure.
Hi Jimmy! this video was very informative. I am a mom of 2 kids & i was sick of little auto focus cameras & handycams. i wanted clear & sharp images of my kids. i have 2 things to ask you. first when i am making video of my kids they are always running around & sometime it feels like they are out of focus. i have to press focus button again & again to make their images sharp & that sound of lens focusing is really loud & bad when i play the video on TV. am i doing something wrong?
second thing i wanted to ask you is that when i am making video indoors its very dark & kids faces looks black and dark. can you tell me setting for indoor shooting vs outdoor shooting. if you can help me out in these areas i will be very thankful.
How do you follow focus while filming I've seen it on some pals RUclips video they are filming themselves and if they move their hand forward the camera automatically focuses on the hand without touching the camera is that with some cameras or what help
You'll have to compensate by bumping up your ISO and opening the lens up a bit in a lower light setting. This can increase grain and make it a bit harder to focus so try to add as much light to the scene before touching these options.
actually i came out with a very bizare idea..capture audio from wireless lapel mic (radioshack) to laptop..and setting up a wireless head phones so i can move around the camera and the laptop??or the zoom mics would be better than a laptop sound card?
Try to stop your lens down a bit (put it at a higher F-stop) as this will increase the depth of field and make it easier to keep everything in focus. If you turn autofocus off you won't have to deal with the noise. I might also recommend shooting at 30fps for home movie type shoots as it will give you more fluid motion and less choppiness.
what video software should i get,im thingking sony vegas pro9 or up, im planning to shoot my kids activities with film look..any idea? if you can make tutorial of how to make cinema look video will be awesome.im totally new in DSLR. thank you so much.
You are definitely going to have the most control and best options with a 7D, but if you are new to DSLR and just learning, it would probably be more beneficial to get a T4i or T3i (depending on if you want touch screen or not). Not to mention a large portion of how good your picture looks has to do with the lens you use and the lighting. Start simple and learn how to get great quality and then advance yourself.
You can just use the scroll wheel, "Av" is the aperture button. Pressing it does nothing. If you hold the button down and dial left or right it will change your F-stop (if using an automatic lens).
I have a question. I'm really new at this. I just purchased a Canon T2i, and I have settings on 1920x1080p 24fps, ISO 100. But when I record it will get really noisy and grainy. It seems there is no difference if I put the ISO at 100 or 6400. Even in the daylight shooting outside the quality seems.. really crappy. Could that be that I'm using a 8GB SDHC only class 4?? I really would appreciate some advice or help!!
There are a few ways. You can set your camera for "neutral" and dial back the contrast and saturation a bit, or you can install a present picture profile like "cinestyle: or "super flat". I have links for the downloads in the description.
Shallow depth of field gives shallow depth of field. If you close the aperture more, it usually gets sharper. A lot of lenses are their sharpest around f/5.6 to f/8, or even at f/4. But really good lenses are sharp much before that. When you start going to very small apertures, you start to get diffraction, which means you start losing details again, even if what's is in focus increases.
Hey Jimmy, great video it was very informative. I'm trying to create a glowing tron disk effect in after effects. Can you tell me how I might achieve this? Any help would be great. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yeah, class ten will really help, class 4 can't keep up with the data transfer of 1080p at 24fps and it comes out shitty. I'd suggest PNY class 10 8gb, you can shoot about 2 and a half hours of HD footage that will come out right.
Hey I direct music videos and I'm trying to get the best lens I was going to purchase the tamron 17-50 mm 2.8 do you recommend I buy that or would u recommend me something else better
Thanks for this. Really helped. For some strange reason my setting was on 25fps instead of 24fps. So it was jerky. Have you done any tutorials on how to get HD quality once transferred to PC. Mine look great on the camera with HDMI lead connected. But then once in the computer - looks blurry. Not sure why? Keep up the good work.
Check out Magic lantern, it will give you all the proper shutter speeds and even lower ISO settings. Plus manual audio levels for better reference and even useable for nat sound.
Hey I want to start shooting good Video that I can enhance. I am blown away by the Videos that I see on Vimeo? I want to be able to create shots that really have a cinematic or film quality. I am considering a T3i or T4i or 7d
If I had more time right now I would whip up a video, but I'm caught between multiple features. Check out videocopilot they have all kinds of tutorials for after effects. You can mix and match and find something that works for you.
Your frame rate has nothing to do with image quality, the only thing it affects is how smooth the motion is. If you shoot the same exact shot at both 24fps and 60fps it will look exactly the same. The 24fps shot will have a bit slower motion to it and feel more cinematic while the 60fps will have more fluid and smooth motion. I merely suggested 24fps because that's how most films shoot. However, if you are planning to speed up or slow down your clips in post, then shoot 60fps.
Thanks for the comment. Sony Vegas is great, I personally use either Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro. If you want a film look the first thing to do is follow all the steps listed in this video. When you color correct you will really be able to sculpt and define the look you want. Get your program, get to know it, and figure out how you like to grade your footage. I'll work on some more tutorials soon.
This was helpful, if i need more help with my t2i can i message you? im getting mines this weekend with the 18-55 kit lens and i bought the 50mm 1.8 lens :D
You forgot #4. Never use the camera mic for talent audio. It sucks. There is a 3.5mm jack input that allows use of a prosumer lav mic (and I think it defeats the auto gain). Even better would be second system sound using a digital recorder, slating at the beginning of each take, using the camera mic for reference only and laying in the good audio in post. Just a thought.
Please minimize the volume of the backgruond music you are using. Its distracting and makes it a difficult to hear you out since the music is too loud to complement your speech.
Hey there, have you considered "MagicSFXphoto" (do a Google search for it)? On their website you will find a great free video demonstrating how you can take impressive pictures. This helped Joe to create pictures that have a jaw-dropping-effect when you take a look at them. Perhaps it will help you too.

your video is great but the music is annoying, you should probably talk without any music and it will be pleasant. Maybe a little music for the intro etc but not the whole time.
Some useful information but a poor quality video, especially considering you are supposed to be showing us how to get great video quality. Also, as a good number of people on here have mentioned, the background noise is very distracting and completely unnecessary, please just get rid of it. You said a wide aperture will give a sharper image. This is strictly incorrect although with a shallower depth of field, (which a wide aperture will give), the focused area or image plane will appear sharper. You also said that you are good at replying to comments but I don't see much evidence of that, perhaps you will reply to my comment. Thanks for posting the video, nonetheless.
+Brian Hall Hey Brian. As you can see this video was posted 3 years ago, before I owned any lights (which is why the video admittedly looks like crap) or really knew a great deal about what I was doing. I really made the video for kids I was going to school with who asked me about my camera settings, and it kinda blew up. The main reason I stopped responding to people, aside from being intensely busy, is because I am sick of hearing about the background music. Yes I get it, everyone hates it. It's a part of the video. I can't do anything about that. I stopped using it in other videos I made. Anyway I haven't made any tutorial vids in a long time. I've been using my channel pretty much just for music lately. I'm not above getting back into it though. Thanks for the comment.
STILL COME BACK TO THIS VIDEO.
Can't really hear you coz the background music is too LOUD!
Dude make more vids, your content is still relevant and very informative! Thanks.

Question: when you say "50 shutter speed", exactly what setting is that?
You made the intro video using video copilot's project file right?
With custom white balance - do I reset it for each location I shoot in? Also why is custom white balance good?
Cool. you went over how to get a film look. Now, how can I get my Canon t3i to have a television quality look?
Is it good for a starter vlogging

any sound recording ideas ??mic and recorder..??

What options would there be if you don't want to shoot in HD for the T2i, and do you offer any videos about setting up lights? Thanks so much!

What do you recommend for setting custom white balance? White card, 18% grey?
I'm sorry for asking a noob question but how to change the ISO manually on the Canon 600D?
what video software should i get,im thingking sony vegas pro9 or up, im planning to shoot my kids activities with film look..any idea? if you can make tutorial of how to make cinema look video will be awesome.im totally new in DSLR. thank you so much.
if im going to shoot my video in the night what do i do to get more light
Got Rebel T3...not so much to configuere.
Hi! Great tips! Did you ever post a tutorial on Custom white balance, can't seem to find it! Thanks for your time!

What image quality do you shoot with Raw?
I have a couple of class 10 32gb Sandisk Extreme SD cards. I also have one class 10 16gb PNY card.
Nice tutorial

The background noise (music?) is very distracting - Otherwise it could havebeen a good video
@TheAndrewBlue1 Sure thing. Glad I could help.
Here in the Uk, our 550ds don't do 60fps, it only goes to 50fps… is there a way of changing this??
mazikiblade Change your video setting from PAL to NTSC.
Awesome! I'll give it a go when I get home! Thanks!
Thanks. Some great tips there.

Thank you. Great tutorial as I finally dive into manual mode.
Thankss, point 10 is very helpful
Focus? What's that?
Depends how much you're looking to spend. I really like the zoom mics. H4 is optimal but if you're tight on cash an H1 is still great.
Thanks for this. Really helped. For some strange reason my setting was on 25fps instead of 24fps. So it was jerky.

tutorial on how to get great video quality .....demonstrated with crappy video quality LOL !!!

What ISO are you shooting at? Could be partially related to the lens, seeing as a 3.5 is as wide open as you can get.
That depends on what other editing programs you're comparing it to. I personally do not like the workflow of Final Cut Pro X, but that's just me.
If I had more time right now I would whip up a video, but I'm caught between multiple features. Check out videocopilot they have all kinds of tutorials for after effects. You can mix and match and find something that works for you.
THANKS YOU REALLY HELPED ME WITH THIS ONE KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!! VERY INFORMATIVE

I like the 18% grey card, personally. But a white card will do just fine if you don't have one.
I installed ML a while back and I absolutely love it.

Could not finish movie because of the music.
you call that music? it's his space ship hovering outside.
This was helpful, if i need more help with my t2i can i message you?

nice
50mm 1.8..for film making? no..thats too close
Thats it- Im outa here- cant cope with the noise
Thks man. Now i think my videos will improve 1000%. lol
what kind of music background is this ? terrible !
this helps a lot chhers.

Lose the background music.
that background theme is annoying
Still relevant in 2024

ok now do the tutorial except show me how to do it on the actual camera lol
Music NOISE NOISE .... REVIEW Your damn video before you put it on RUclips....This is real basic amateur stuff and so easy to avoid!
Then you must be deaf cuz I kept the levels down!

This is so not helpful at least tell us we're this stuff is
Please don't put such distracting music into your videos...otherwise the content was good.
Please learn to focus correctly on yourself Jimmy :)
