The problem is they wrote this episode during season 1, not thinking the show would last so long.
Seeing this just makes me feel so happy for Ted. After all that time he finally got what he wanted.

Because this series resembles life perfectly. Things never go the way you expect, and death my friend… can come at any time to anyone. The original ending is just PERFECT! It has the touch of real life, right to the feelings.
Not really, They fucked up a lot ,They didn't want robin to the mother because it will become predictable so they have to introduced tacy to be the expectation subversion but at the same time they couldn't make up their mind about robin not ending up with Ted either. So yeah its not reality, its just bad writing.
yeah, but to have the premise of the show being ted telling his kids how he met their mother in hopes that they would like the story enough to let him get aunt robin back is dumb
He ended up with Robin because he needed to move on, the mother is dead. There was a scene where if Ted goes back to the past, he'll spend it all with Tracy, not Robin, because he loves the mother more.
Mune mu'ne Sure but the way they set up the whole premise of the show, placing all the emphasis on the mother, only to have it be about robin again especially with her repeatedly ending back up with barney is dumb.
i wish we got 2 or 3 seasons with Tracy

They filmed the part with the kids during the first two seasons. But if the direction of the show really changed, they should’ve made the part with Robin an alternate ending. Nobody wanted Robin with Ted because Robin and Barney’s relationship has been building for half the show and people learned to love it just like they learned to love Ted with the mother

A scene where you start to tear up, but Barney saves the day and you laugh and cry at the same time...
I feel like if HIMYM were given a 10th season they could of done it properly giving the season to Ted and Tracy as they progressed from dating to marriage to having kids.

@@scruffd0g193 only because they held off on introducing the mother and it got stale. They didn't have to take the title of the show so literally and have them meet in the vary last scene of the story. If we had been allowed to follow Ted and Tracy's first couple of years together, there were plenty of new story possibilities with a new character in the mix. Even Jason who had gotten tired of the show at that point seemed excited about doing scenes with Cristin in season 9.
Why is everyone writing could of, instead of could have. Was I wrongly tought, or are people weird?
Tracy is literally the perfect girl.
After this scene, they should’ve shown Tracy and Ted holding Penny in their arms for the first time, then Luke, then Tracy and Ted’s wedding and ended the show right then and right there. No divorce, no stray away, no death, no toxic couple.
The unrealistic pansy ending? No. That's life. That's what I love about the ending.

We never got to meet Tracy’s parents. Never even saw what Max looked like. Saw 5 seconds of the wedding. Didn’t get to see them move in together. If they wanted to make it semi realistic, Tracy dies & Ted ends up with Victoria. Because sometimes life isn’t fair and people do die. But robin was an outcast, and she rejected him for so damn long. I’ll never get over it. Oh
This is the last scene that I watch on the finale. Then I put on the alternate ending.
Its incredible how long it took for them to get married but its also good because when youre a married couple theres so much stuff involved like living arrangments, having kids, financial crap and more. Since these two weren't officially married they have more time to go on dates, hang with friends and also rolling in the hay In bed
Curly you're right, because when you live togehter and have kids but you're not officially married, suddenly it all becomes easy, costs less and takes much less time and effort, so you can hang out with friends. It's true. Sure. Good point.

They killed her because life's unpredictable and you never know where you are gonna end up. This show is about life and how it takes many turns, just because you didn't get your happy ever after finale doesn't mean that the producers and directors did a bad job.
@@sept5794 except its not about that. at least for me, the anger comes from the fact that they shoved Ted and Robin together. I was okay with the mother dying (although most things felt rushed) but what I was not okay with was the reaction from the kids and the whole "getting back with Robin" thing. Ted and Robin had they're run, and it didn't work out. they then found their happiness and it wasn't together. and it would've been more powerful if the moral of the story was "life doesn't always end in romance, but as long as you have people that care for you and that you care for just as much, you'll be fine"
but of course, all of this is opinions. for example part of my distaste comes from never really liking Ted and Robin as a couple, I always did see them best as friends. both endings have their points, sure, but for me the one where Ted and Robin aren't together is the best one.
Now I don't mean to start an argument or something, and I usually just leave it be, but you shared your part and I wanted to share mine as well. in the end it was a pretty good show that I still love to watch from time to time.
There's nothing wrong with putting your career first. It is an accomplishment just as forming a family is. I think Robin was wise enough for not making Ted quit his dream for her. I still don't think they were a good match. But you know, people fall in love in an unpredictable way. And the show is loosely based in one of the writers' life. Although he didn't get the girl in the end.
No lie, I choked up a little the first time I saw this.
I hate how people say "Well that's just realistic!" Well how about this? I like how the show is full of real events and characters (fictional story still) but how about I don't want everything about it to be realistic? That's why I loved this show because it was both over the top ridiculous but still quite real. I didn't want it to end real and that's the problem. They destroyed seasons of build up, reverted characters to their earlier season selves, killed the mother with what was essentially an off-hand comment just to throw together two people who never have been a good match. And they did it all within a single 40 minute episode. I would've been fine with it if it was spread over the course of 3 to 5 episodes... All this, just to attain a vision conceptualized since the beginning, just to make it " *real* "
Ossyria I know this is old but I have to say it. Ted still being in love with Robin is not realistic at all. They destroyed the show with their stubbornness about Ted and Robin ending up together. If someone asks me about this show's story, I'll tell them, 'watch the first episode and that's it. The rest doesn't matter.' Which is sad, because it was a great show (if we ignore the ending).
The ending is not realistic at all! It's just a teenager's concept of what "realistic" is, ie, dark and depressing. Except that Ted and Robin end up having way too much negative baggage as a couple for them to work, even 20 years down the line. ESPECIALLY since the things that kept them apart are still unresolved (Robin is still a career driven woman and Ted's kids are still teenagers, meaning he still has at least 5 years of parenting ahead of him). Not to mention that Penny and Luke acting all bored during the story and being all giddy about them getting together is one of the most unrealistic things in the entire show.

Plus the whole "death and divorce are parts of life therefore the ending is realistic to life" argument is stupid. It's way more common for people to have long prosperous marriages than for something to suddenly stop them
In this scene, Tracy implies that she is pregnant with Ted’s child. This is a subtle nod to the fact that Tracy is the mother of his children.

I hate that we got so many tedious, over-blown rehash scenes of Barney and Robin's wedding and so little of the Ted and Tracy romance. Cristin Milioti hit it out of the park as Tracy, the mother. I think the showrunners stupidly stuck to their Robin game plan which meant Robin and Barney's marriage would fail. This made all the S9 episodes regarding the wedding pointless. Frankly, it further highlighted Robin's selfishness which were flaws that made her less likable. Robin on some level was selfish and disregarded every guy she's ever been with. The one exception was her co-anchor boyfriend and NOT the one played by Lily's real life husband.
They had to minimize /undercut depicting the Ted & Tracy romance to force feed the Robin winding up with Ted ending!
The last season should have just been about ted and Tracy’s relationship
I think we all himym fans deserved the 10th season...
And Barney 😁 as always the funniest guy in the room.

The original ending sucked no matter what. That would have just annoyed people if they made Robin looking at Ted longingly.
They should have just let Barney and Robin stay together after all the buildup to their wedding and Ted finally letting go of Robin. They threw so much character development down the drain within a few minutes (sigh).
Also, in watching and rewatching this show, I've gotten more annoyed with how Robin only seems to want Ted when he's happy with someone else.
I much prefer the alternate ending. Robin and Barney may still not end up together, but at least Robin continues her life without getting back together with fucking Ted. The only possibility if she and Barney broke up again. No fucking getting back with Ted. Even if I still think it's stupid that they're not together, at least it's better written than their bogus excuse to put back together a couple whose writing has always shown them to be doomed to failure, namely Ted & Robin. I will always be happy for the existence of the alternate ending to the series. At least Ted and Tracy stay there together instead of Ted and Robin... A horror.

The only way Barry could Stinson it up is mistaking the situation. Per usual.
And this is why the ending sucked IMO. After being with Tracy, Ted would never had gone back to Robin. I can see him moving on with someone else maybe, someone new, but not with Robin. Because you don’t settle for “second best” after having had everything you always wanted and knowing just how good it can be when you find your soulmate.
The ending felt cheap. Like they did it just for shock value, to be remembered as the sitcom with the unexpected twist ending. They could have discarded the original ending they shot. Robin and Ted may be good as friends but they do not work as a couple. They are too different.
The other issue is that Tracy was such a perfect cast that even though we only saw her in a few episodes we fell in love with her. I liked Robin OK but I loved Tracy 😢 Ted deserved to grow old with Tracy, not just have a few years with her so she could give him children and then kill her off so he could run back to Robin. It makes it seem like Tracy was just a temporary detour in his love story with Robin instead of the love of his life that we grew to love throughout 9 seasons.
Also.. I don’t mind Barney and Robin’s divorce but Barney’s character regression was awful to see, although that scene with his baby girl was precious.
This makes me wanna cry Tracy was the best for ted they should not of killed her :(

I like the ending. Life happens. You grab the important moments, people die that are young, it seems unfair. Parents sometimes die young. He had been raising the children for 6 years without the love of his life. But they realized that he loved 'Aunt Robin'. They were mature enough to hear that story. And that story freed him to be with the next one in his life. I know many don't like the ending, but smiles through tears is the sweetest.
If you think about it, Barney isn't wrong.😅

Pure laziness on the part of the show runners to kill off Tracy. And if Ted had to be with someone it should have been Victoria. Robin is a male Barney. They are fun but I wouldn’t want to be around them all the time. Robin isn’t that likable of a character. She isn’t half the person Tracy was.
Unpopular opinion here but I actually thought this scene was so forced and quite cringe-y
