The show ended way too abruptly. It needed between 5 and 10 more episodes to round up all the stories. We barely got to know Tracy, there was no time in between Barney and Robin getting married and splitting up, we didn't see Marshall and Lily's kids grow up even a little bit, Ted found Tracy and in no time she was dead, we didn't see the interaction between Ted's kids and Robin, or who Barney got pregnant. All that could've been told in just a few episodes.

The way I interpret it, Tracy was the only one who could make Ted truly happy without thinking of Robin, and the lunch scene was important in proving so. Even though Robin was right there telling her how she felt and he perfectly knew how he used to feel for her, he knew he was happy and Robin accepted that. On top of that, there was also a funeral scene that was cut, which was also important for us to see that when Tracy died, Ted didn't see her as a distraction from getting back with Robin, but he mourned because he did really love her. And it took him 6 years to accept his own sadness over Tracy, ultimately realizing that there was no "The One" and that he would be with Robin in the end, fulfilling not only his happiness but also her own. And so he told his kids the story which pretty much served as him asking for their blessing.
I don't think the Ted and Robin ending was bad at all, but it was poorly executed and was missing so many vital scenes which it why it divided the fanbase into two.

This!!! It could’ve also been to get the audience in on the marriage (since most viewers were probably iffy about them being a couple to begin with or still thought of Ted and Robin being perfect for each other). That Lunch scene proves that even though Ted started dating Robin after Tracy Died, Ted will still love Tracy more. Because while he was with Tracy, he never thought of Robin in a romantic way the whole time.
He does still have feelings for her. That is NEVER going away. But not in the same level as Tracy.
As someone pointed out. Ted had to steal the blue horn as proof of him FORCING destiny to have him and robin be together.

It was the ONLY time Ted faced Robin without a smidgen of a romantic feeling for her, truly being friends, because he really was happy with Tracy. It would have made the ending a MILLION times better. So he ends up with Robin after both achieved what they wanted, and he gets the kids' blessing (much like Tracy did to start dating again)...fine, but this way it doesn't feel like Tracy was just a distraction. • @dannyb5670

Yeah but think from the makers' perspective. They always wanted the whole "the moment he met her and the whole serendipity about it" to be the final scene of the series. They'd have to place the funeral scene somewhere before that. For a viewer, to watch such a remorseful scene before they watch the ultimate ending scene would seriously mess with their expectations for the "meeting scene". They would have been too sad thinking about her funeral when we they see them meeting for the first time. I guess that's why they had to remove it.

Think about this for a second:
    - The series finale of Friends took a whole hour. (30 minutes if you separate them into 2 parts.) With all the threads in the story coming to a close, it had all the questions answered concluded with a fitting and satisfying ending.
A perfect way to bow out the show
    - In HIMYM , the series finale took 44 minutes ( 22 minutes separated into 2 parts).
It felt rushed as it went on. It was lacking substance and thought put into these episodes. I knew that this isn't what the show creators had in mind - they could've done more to carry on the narrative for it to have a proper send off. They couldnt just leave it like that. No wonder why this left a poor taste on the fan's mouths who spends time invested in the 9 years of its run.
This clip proves that Carter Bays and Craig Thomas didnt do nothing wrong and this is no way their fault.
Instead we should direct our anger and frustrations whoever at the network, the TV executives for deciding to cut these scenes out from the finale.
These are some really, really, really CRUCIAL scenes that they decided to cut.
Like at the diner scene with Ted and Robin, why didnt they leave that on the original cut? It would've unfolded everything, it reveals they still have their love for each other, and having Robin finally decided to settle down all these years. Even Alyson Hannigan ( Lily Aldrin) said that there was supposed to be a funeral scene for Tracy and that was ultimately cut off.
WHAT THE FUCK??!!!! Why weren't we allowed to see that?!!
Come on, man. This 6 minutes and 20 seconds of the video would've answered everyone's questions. Instead of the outrage and hate that this show didn't deserve.
If they had included all the deleted scenes including the mother's funeral scene, it would've brought the finale to an hour. Which it truly deserved!!!
This shows that the tv network/ execs. had no RESPECT for HIMYM. All that time and dedication to the craft. And they tarnished this show's legacy which could've been a legendary masterpiece, it would've been right up there with greats such as well- Friends, Seinfeld etc.
But no, it became an afterthought years later after the show's demise. Deprived of its recognition and popularity to reach the status like Friends which is still showing in different channels as I speak. That's how popular Friends still is to the fanbase.
When we should have been rewarded for being a long time viewer of the show, instead was the opposite: we were robbed
People say ' yeah HIMYM is a ripoff of Friends yadi yadi yada, its Friends 2.0'
But HIMYM stood out on its own for its unique premise. It had a motive. ( how did Ted Mosby meet the mother of his children?)
It was a nice, whirlwind journey and I was glad to be apart of it but what a shame on how it ended. So underrated.

It was cruel what they did to Robin too, especially at the end, but on other occasions as well I think. In reality women can make it work to have husbands/families even if they have to work abroad. I had the feeling they punished the "career woman" for her choice how to live life in the series. She got to be the saddest character even though Barney was the most fucked up of all. And I think building a family really was just plan b for Lilly. She was too big a coward to really try for her dreams. But I guess many people have that plan b, that's just the way it is.

Just finished with the show. Seriously, that scene with Robin in the cafe, THAT would have been the best place to end it. The mom was ill, so he told the kids the story of how he met her b/c he wasn't sure if she was going to pull through. So they build some tension around that in the last episodes, but she lives. The story about him and Robin ends up becoming a good lesson about letting go of the past. Then Robin and Ted meet up and have this heart to heart. It's happy for Ted, it's bittersweet for Robin, and we get a finale to the story that began with them that doesn't make the mother a useless plot device.
This is all still fresh for me, so I'm still stewing.

Out of all the purely negative "oh they ruined this character" or just empty opinions like" I liked the mom she was pretty" this is the comment I agree with the most. The show has always been about life lessons and I think this would have been the perfect mix between the happily ever after and the tragic death, where everything comes full circle in a bittersweet kind of way as you put it with ted saying no to robin at the end. The woman he had chased after so many times and could never let go of while thinking that she was the happiness that he seeked in his life until he met tracy, his true soulmate.

I still dont mind Ted gettting back with Robin after Tracy dies. The execution of this idea sucks in the show, but it doesnt mean the idea itself is bad. All we needed to see is how Ted is broken after losing Tracy and thinking that he shouldnt get together with someone else, out of respect for Tracy. Then the message would be that you can love more than 1 person in your life. Sure, the moving on way that u presented could work too, but I dont think the idea of the writers is bad. What was bad is how they treated Barney, that was a complete character regression.

    • @MDAce150
      @MDAce150 4 года назад +54

I really like your idea... I would like to add to it with an idea I had... Ted and Robin leave the restaurant after their heart to heart, as Ted goes off to meet his wife and pick up his kids, we get the "Major problems" moment. As Ted walks off, Robin walks off looking back at him... not looking where she's going she bumps into a man's back and he drops everything he's carrying (his face is not shown). She apologizes as she tearfully helps him pick up his things. Amongst the things she picks up is a picture of her with the man... she pauses stunned... she looks up and the man is revealed to be... Don (its the picture they took together when they did the show with the puppets). They talk for a moment and Don reveals he's just moved back to NY and is starting a new network job tomorrow (and that's why he was carrying the box of belongings) and he's on the way to put them in his new office. Robin asks "What network?" and Don says "Metro News 1". She says "You're going back?" He says "I always felt like there was something missing... something I needed to finish". They smile and stare at each other as they begin to walk off, talking.
Then we hear Ted's (narrative) voice as he tells his kids the lessons he learned about destiny and patience and timing (as the camera cuts to them listening to him talk). How with Robin and Don it was destiny mixed with patience and timing. And before he can launch off into another long lecture to the kids, we hear Tracy's (his wife's) voice saying if he keeps talking the kids ears off, they're going to be late for Don and Robin's wedding.
Ted continues to finish his thoughts about destiny, patience and timing...
We briefly flashback to The Farhampton station when Ted and Tracy met and hear a little of their conversation. They have their discussion about the story of the umbrella. Ted tells her he used to believe in destiny... he still kind of does... but he feels more that life is about patience and... Tracy interrupts and finishes with "Timing..." Then we get those final words.
"Destiny, Patience and Timing... And that kids... is How I Met Your Mother...
The theme music for the closing credits plays and in the background we see photos from the wedding which include pictures of Robin and Don cutting the cake, Ted and Tracy laughing, Lily and Marshall dancing, Barney smiling dancing with his daughter and ending with one final picture of Robin in her wedding dress with Ted, Marshalll, Lily and Barney.

I do not think they are depicting this. Robin was happy as a successful woman. Her relationship with Barney was a tumultuous one. This was depicted well with their many fights, the insecurities of each and the fact that he had to sort of play her. These foreshadowed the demise of their relationship. Barney was burnt out being with her. They are mostly showing how sad she is in her realization that Ted was the one and she has lost him here and her heartfelt apology to him. She admits her mistake. Though she is insanely happy professionally, now that she is ready to commit to someone truly, he is not available and they just have this distant friendship because they cannot have anything else.

So, despite Tracy being the best fit for Ted, Robin and Ted were destined/designed to get together since the shows inception

C'mon people we all knew Ted and Robin were always meant to be together in the show. Otherwise why would they give so much emphasis of Ted's feelings for her all through the show. And if his wife was alive, why wud he spend days and weeks telling abt the story of how he met their mother to his kids? It was imaginable that she was no more. Do u know when we could have imagined the ending? The episode where Marshal and Lily made bet on Ted abd Robin. In the last scene, Marshal still said NOT YET. That's when the ending was clear. And here he finally got his money after he won the bet. If they had changed the name of the show to something else, and just made it a simple show with a simple name,no storytelling,no past future,u would'v easily understood the finale. Bt the title of the show confused you all. Like Ross and Rachel end up together, obviously Ted and Robin too! They were lobsters ❤️

If only the finale was longer... if only they have included all this scenes... they finale will be a little bit less disappointing. In particular, the scene in which Robin tells Barney that she was about to run away (giving the audience a little idea of future arguments beteeen them AND the sudden and totally unexpected divorce), and the luch scene between Robin and Ted.. it showed that he was REALLY happy, that what they did wasn't rushed. I know that 6 years is a long time and I am cool with them together, I just think this will have make everything has more sense...more scenes of him dealing with his wife's dead, may be Robin being there for him... you know? Also, Marshall winning his five bucks is hilarious 😂

Ok WTF!!!! Why in the world would they cut out the lunch scene. Oh! Wait! Although it was very much needed for the storyline, they wanted their *shocking* ending and they got it, cuz they cut this out. That scene would have alluded that Ted and Robin weren't done. But those last 5 to 10 minutes...

    • @UsonoHoushi
      @UsonoHoushi 5 лет назад +18

I feels more like they took it out, because that scene makes Robin feel like a villain. She's hoping Ted would cheat on his Tracy. And Clearly Ted did not share her feelings. And loved Tracy 100%
But respected her and their relationship enough to kindly decline her.
And the ending was not at all shocking. The moment Tracy said "what kind of mother, doesn't go to her own daughter's wedding?" and Ted starts to cry. As well as the new year scene. They pretty much spell it out for you.
The show is known for subtle forshadowings. It's what made the show so great, especially when you rewatch it and see the connections.

And obviously the new year where Tracy had a hangover.
      Long version:
After Tracy says the line, Ted gives her a look. And once they meet eyes he starts to cry, which has her crying while comforting him. Then goes on to trying to change the subject.
      It's a show don't tell moment.
With new year, Ted explained within the story that everytime they all had those hangovers it was when they were all at their most miserable. And the drink was a way for Barney to comforting them.
The last scene is seen Tracy having a hang over. And Ted giving her the drink.
      Very subtle story telling.

This is one of those occasions where the story did not get enough time to explain itself and transition from one revelation to the next.
HIMYM finale was rushed and many things were learned in one single episode. They knew ahead of time how long they would have though so I believe they should have used the last season to expand and transition all these finals revelations rather than shoving it into the last final episode.
The fact that the entire season resolved around Robin & Barney’s wedding just to be told in the final episode that Robin and Barney divorced just a few years later and the entire season is in many ways a waste of time for the overall story.
And how sad is that!? An entire season was used as filler, time killer when they had so much more to tell!! I don’t understand why the creators and writers did this when they had so much to work from and it was the final wrap up. It’s like they said screw all of season 9, besides the final 2 episodes. We’ll put all our creative power to these 2 final episodes and throw tons of news and twists and surprises and disappointments, and just have the wedding spread out across the rest of the season and advance almost nothing.
I just don’t get it but I do believe the final script could have worked and been accepted much better had it not came as a series of random revelations and forced/rushed twists.
The mother had to die at the end, absolutely no doubt. The series had already hinted towards that to many times over the years and it only brings more reason and power to the story of how dad met mom… So that is clear. It had to happen. And I’m okay with that and believe many others are too. Many feel cheated that it was Robin who ended up with Ted in the end because of various reasons but basically because they felt lied too and cheated but again, it only makes sense. As the children mentioned at the end, who’s story was this truly ? It was Robin! All about Ted and Robin. So it makes sense that daddy kept talking mostly about Robin more than anyone else, including the mother, because it was the story of how he met Robin, and was it not?......
Momma died, Ted & Robin finally come full circle later in life after years of on and off relationship, failed marriages, widowed and basically a realization that they were destined for each other in the end. It was all about Robin. So it makes sense they come together in the end.
But the problem was the rushed transitions of facts. Again, had they better organized the ending and spread it across the season rather than a wedding, that in actuality, was nothing more than a faded mistake in the memories of all.
So that was pretty bad to use the entire final season to tell a story that really actually ended up not meaning anything at all in the end.
Barney reverted to his old ways after receiving the biggest character growth in the show over the last season or 2. So that felt rushed and unexpected and just flat out disappointing.
So basically, I’m just trying to say that all these final revaluations ended on a sour note only because they came as surprises and rushed and an entire season got flushed in the process.
Still a great series. One of the absolute best.

It’s not just the final season that’s a waste. Everything from season 6 to 9 is all about how Barney and Robin end up together. They need to get together in order for Ted to meet Tracy.

Robin kind of took Ted for granted those early years. She was focused on other things when love came but knew she could rely on him. It was not until she lost him completely when she was in the position to actually be in a relationship where she was not traveling that caused her to introspect and felt the need to express this to him, even though he was happy somewhere else, leading the life he always imagined. Ted is the hero in the sense that he got to experience two great loves, and even Victoria, who most in his shoes would have gone on to marry, although there were those two aspects of her knowing about Robin and the sense that she is close to but not exactly the one, or at least "one of the ones", because, as they show depicts, there are more of them out there.

Honestly, I love the ending! Of course, the Cafe scene would have made a huge difference and I would love the ending even more. It gives a sense of reality and how bittersweet life can be and for those of you who don't know, the writers had been giving hints of how the show would end since Season 1. The biggest hint to me was the fact that Ted and Tracy's favorite book is Love In The Time of Cholera which tells a story of two lovers that are together in the beginning, then break up, the woman marries another man, the man eventually dies and she and her former lover come together again at the end, besides, the characters have a lot of similiarities too.

for real if they had included the scene where robin confesses that she's not all that happy despite being successful and that she still has feelings for ted after all those years then i probably would have coped with the ending better. the main reason why i despised the finale so much was because it felt like ted hadn't actually moved on from robin even after getting married to tracy. but in that scene, he says he's happy with how his life is after ending up with tracy. that scene would have given the ending some justice and us fans some peace of mind.
