Anyone notice how RID has the opposite premise of Beast Wars 2?
In RID all the good guys are vehicles, while all the bad guys are beasts (later joined by vehicles).
In BW2 all the good guys are beasts, while all the bad guys are vehicles (later joined by beasts).
Neat. Never noticed that
It was a cool change I thought as a kid
Same case with beast machine being paraelle to rid
Never seen BW2 but that is awesome.
Except for Galvatron and Megatron who have both beasts and vehicle modes
RiD 2001 is better than RiD 2015, don't @ me.
But, that's an objective fact. Who's gonna argue?
I agree that RID 2001 is better even though I was born in 2005
I sort of like RID 2015 but 2001 is way better
I didn't like either.
I agree
RiD and Armada make up a lot of my early Transformers memories. So I have a decent amount of nostalgia for Robots in Disguise
Same
Same here
I used to watch it on Jetix and even picked up the complete series boxset!
Same, its what got me into the franchise as a kid, had most of the starting Autobots as well as RID Megatron.
Same here.
Who's the baddest shark around
Who's the baddest shark in town
Artzy Kid Sky-Byte!
On the right or who's the baddest godzilla
"Who'll drive Scourge into the ground
And never let old Megatron down?
Sky-Byte, that's me!" - TFWiki second verse of Sky-Byte's self-promoting song (often heard in the background while swim-flying in shark mode)
Sky byte that's me!
I love that song!
I was introduced to the franchise through hand-me-down toys from older cousins during the tail end of Beast Wars, and while I enjoyed the show from the few episodes I caught in TV and the VHS tapes I had, RID will always hold a place as the sort of "gateway" series for me. The show was entertaining for gradeschool me, and the toyline was simply amazing given the range of alt modes and different types of toys one could get. One of my proudest moments as a kid was having a nearly complete show cast (only missing Skid-Z, Towline, the Spychangers, and Fort Max, who as mentioned never got a chance through Hasbro).
Most of my childhood Transformers were lost to time and garage sales, but thankfully a couple of years ago my grandfather managed to find my Scourge in his basement while cleaning stuff out. Very happy to have him rejoin the ranks of my collection and his fellow Nemesis Primes.
I'm still upset we still don't have a North American DVD and Blu-Ray release of this underrated series.
Due to this whole Saban/Disney debacle.
I didn't have cable growing up, so until I had high speed internet, the only Transformers media I had was my older brother's Beast Wars tapes, Transformers RID, and the live action movies, with only catching glimpses of the Unicron Trilogy in commercials or at someone else's house. For me, RID was my first Transformers series, and it's one of my favorites to this day.
I totally had a love of the show even though I recognized that it was heavily flawed in certain areas. Sky-byte is legit one of my favourite transformers ever. I still hope that he comes back in media retaining most of his characteristics.
Here's hoping he shows up in Cyberverse!
I think you are going to be happy to hear. This some new Cyberverse season 2 action figures has been officialy. Leaked by Hasbro and Skybyte is one of those action figures so maybe he shows. Up in the show or is just one of those toy. Exclusive characters and never appers on the show. I hope that is not the case and he appers in the show
You misspelled *Gigatron* ;)
He would have fitted very well into Beast Wars.
@@TheKingofbrooklin The initial Cybershark himself would have fit very well into Beast Wars. It's a shame the Water based characters would have probably been a budget and technical issue for the show.
Sorry I'm late, but man I love RID2001. It was the series that introduced me to Transformers. Here in Brazil it was called "The New Generation", so I always knew that some previous version must had existed, but this was my original generation nonetheless. It aired for the first time here around 2002 or 2003 on a morning cartoon block from monday to friday. It got me hooked like no other cartoon ever did, and I was quite a fan of things like Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh and Power Rangers back then. The idea for me was simply genius. To my sadness, however, the show stopped airing exactly after the episode where the Decepticons are born. I was left terrified with the possibility of never having the chance to finish the series and discover how the Autobots would deal with so many new enemies. Fortunately, the show came back some time after on a new block at lunchtime and I could finish watching the series. It aired at least until 2006, when it was replaced by Extreme Ghostbusters. I remember Armada airing alongside it for a while, but that series never got me the same way as RID. Energon and Cybertron never aired here (thank God I might add). Meanwhile, I always dreamed of getting toys based on RID, but without internet at the time I had no way of knowing if they actually existed, so I had to content myself with any knockoff I could find (Remember, it's Brazil, official Hasbro toys were so rare I had never seen one back then). Finally came the 2007 movie and it blew my mind. I still find it funny remembering how confused I was when Prime introduced the Autobots and they were not the same characters from RID. "Who the hell is Bumblebee? Are you sure that's not X-Brawn or Sideburn?" I was like that for two minutes, but then I thought "forget it, this movie is awesome anyway". But more importantly, the movie finally made official Hasbro toys popular over here, and my real Transformers collection finally began. After a while of collecting only movie toys, I started to remember RID and the nostalgia struck me. I started hunting down all the main characters from the show and I'm so glad to say that I realized my childhood dream of owning my own RID collection (including the phenomenal Unite Warriors Baldigus). It's not complete yet, but it's getting there! Anyway, it may be one of the most forgotten Transformers series for mainstream audiences (except maybe for Sky-Byte), but it will always be my favorite for introducing me to this wonderful franchise. And as always, thanks for the excellent video, McFeely!

This was a very underrated series in Transformers, even when it came out I wasn't 100% into it. Looking back on it now there's a lot to enjoy from it. Not to mention thanks to this we were lucky enough to hear the associated talent be involved in future incarnations of the franchise.
Great episode Chris.
Sideburn chasing the chick and her cars that are red 🤣
@@jason77584 It's such a silly concept and yet it works so well 😂
Nnnnnnnnnnngggg i neeeeed priiiiiiiiiimeeeeeee and megatrooooooon
After 22 years next Transformers movie will feature again Scourge as a black Optimus Prime-like truck. *Robots in Disguise LIVES!*
Ahh Robots in Disguise. Good old harmless fun and I love it :)
Fire Engine Optimus Prime to this day remains one of my heavy favorites. His design was similar to G1 Prime yet different enough for him to be easily recognizable his own character. His Super Mode with his trailer and his God Mode with Ultra Magnus were absolutely incredible for me and he had a friendship with Koji that was very warm and sweet. I would LOVE to see further adventures with Fire Engine Optimus Prime and his crew.
I remember my neighbour (and great friend) had the RID Megatron figure. While by the time Armada was starting and apparently none of us knew about RID, I must say, that was a damn cool figure.
Did you beat up the figure when no one was around, lol.
You made a horrible mistake mentioning Kiss Players Mcfeely
Now you must do a basics on it
Edit: oh wow, I didn’t think he’d actually do it
I've read some scant info on it before, and honestly I don't really see what the big deal is. It seems like just your average Ecchi action manga.
God.... not kiss players... I think that and Shia Lebouf are the cancer sores of the franchise
@@zuttoaragi8349 That's because it is basically just an ecchi manga pulling double duty of also doing a heck of a lot of continuity housekeeping for Japan's G1 continuity.
@@pandacron And? I don't really see the problem. Ecchi is life.
@@zuttoaragi8349 I don't personally have a problem with the series and find a lot of the ideas introduced interesting. (Preemptive defense : I am not talking about kiss play)
This series is criminally underrated.
Basics on Sky-Byte!
Charlie Young AKA How the awesome, yet unused, design of Beast Wars Cybershark was unfortunately re-cast into slapstick...
@@pious83 Dont you dare repeat that! ALL HAIL SKY-BYTE!!!!!
I kind of like the idea of Fire Convoy being a separate character from Optimus Prime.
I would rename him to Omega Prime, with Ultra Magnus as Neon Magnus to combine into Neon Omega Prime.
So thats the series where my overly muscular Optimus came from, Only the front of the truck form remains.
I remember when I was a kid and I got the little X-Brawn and Scourge toys and I've pretty much loved the whole Nemesis Prime concept since then.
My older brother and I loved The RID toyline! I had Ultra Magnus, he had Optimus, and I thought it was fun to combine them.
I remember buying Optimus Prime at Toys "R" Us and loving that he was a fire engine. The rubber wheels have proven an issue over the years, though.
RiD was my proper introduction to Transformers, and I remember it fondly to this day!
Chris, I will not rest until you create Basics on Erector.
Dew it cris
If he does i will be *erect*
Same for the Aerialbots.
Erector > every other micromaster
I DEMAND KISS PLAYERS
Robots in Disguise is the series that started my Transformers collecting. I can still remember getting my first one, Sideburn. It took me nearly 30 minutes just to figure out where the wheel on his right arm was supposed to go.....it goes in his chest. 500+ figures later, I don't really have any significant issues with transforming anything anymore.....well, unless the figure suffers from poor quality control like my Seige Stormcloud, comes with 2 left thighs, and can't transform properly because of it.
this was my favorite form of transformers media, grew up watching the cartoon and had prowl and megatron figures, I can remember my friend having the bruticus figures
MAN THANK U !
THIS IS MY FAVOURITE SHOW !
I loved this show. It was goofy, and it has that kind of alien feel of all anime dubs from that time period, but that just adds to its charm in my eyes.
After catching only part of Beast Machines, this show was my first real transformers show that I watched growing up. I have such fond memories of watching it every Saturday morning. I just love anything that references RID, like the Baldigus CW repaint, or the Ultra Magnus in Seige. Hopefully they will show more love for its anniversary.
Such an unnecessarily underrated series! Personally, I'm proud to have a majority of the figures - even though I only have two members of the Build Team (Wedge and Hightower), I sadly don't have Skidz and Towline, and literally the only bad guy I have from that series is Megatron! And, not to mention, I also gladly have all the Episodes on DVD. If you ask me, I'd say it deserves an anniversary celebration at some point in the future. ☺
I feel the same R.I.D 2001 was a big part of my childhood. Its underated sure and has that cringy foxkids dub attached to it. But its good in its own way i liked. Grunt Predacons R.I.D 2001 Megatron had under his command they where so. Enjoyable to listen to
@@tailgate8840 Yeah, I couldn't agree more. Honestly, in the case of the era of Japanese dubbed Animes, I personally enjoy this series a teensy bit more than the Unicron Trilogy.
I watched this show on RUclips before getting it on DVD. I'm glad that Sky-Byte will hopefully appear in Cyberverse.
If Cyberverse holds to its current pattern he'll probably some quasi-gender drag queen.
He did

The original RID is why I like Ultra Magnus
Happy Birthday RID - Robots In Disguise Turns 20 Today!
My introduction to Transformers was MAYBE very vague memories of Beast Wars, but mainly it was growing up loving this show, and getting the toys which I adored (starting with Sideburn for my 5th birthday which was amazing). Although my attempt to re watch in in my teens let to me finding it ridiculous and painful to watch at the time, I still hold extremely fond memories for it and it'll always have a very firm place in my heart.
I remember seeing the trailer for RID on fox kids one afternoon, "a nice cool looking train but this isn't a normal train, its got a head, arms and legs, it shoots guns and fire missles" after seeing that I was insta hooked on transformers, was around during G1 and never knew about beast wars/ beast machines so RID was my first introduction to the franchise
2001 RID did good things. Optimus and Ultra Magnus combining is a masterpiece. Most of the toys were *really* good. When I got my first Armada toy, I was disappointed that the quality of the toys had dropped.
Fun fact, Optimus Prime's Diaclone prototype featured the cab as half of the robot and some of the trailer being the other half of the robot. No joke, the idea of Optimus Prime combining with his trailer predates Optimus Prime himself.
I still watch every episodes on RUclips. My favorite characters are Megatron, ultra magnus and autobot brothers.
Saw most of these episodes on RUclips. My 7 year old loved it. Especially Skybyte!
Robots In Disguise is the show I watched with my kids when they were little. The show and my kids got me back into collecting Transformers again.
Go Boy Convoy.
Criminally underrated show in my stupendous opinion.
*CAR ROBOTS*
How creative.
I grew up watching Transformers and the first series I ever started with was Transformers robots in Disguise 2001 now being 26 you're never too old for Transformers and i still bye them to this day Be Geek Be Proud transform and rollout
Same age and same series, started with RID myself.
Very late here, I’m only 22 and RiD was my first look into transformers. I only ever had the first season on disc so I’d just watch that constantly as kids do. Considering looking for the rest of it so I can see how it ends
This 2001 RID incarnation needs to be revived by Takara and Hasbro. Criminally underrated. One of my first exposures after watching the Beast Wars/Beast Machines era of shows.
I was 12 years old in 1984, when Transformers began. I’ve been a devoted fan and collector since. The only time I ever went to a BotCon was in 2001. The weekend I went to that BotCon was right when Robots in Disguise toys were just hitting shelves. That weekend I not only attended BotCon, but I also purchased a load of RiD toys. It was an awesome time that I will never forget as long as I live.
When i wake up every saturday morning, i'm always excited to watch the newest "the basics" video. Even when it's about a part of the franchise i dislike or know little about, it always entertains and educates me. Keep up the amazing work!!!!!
TF RID was an absolute classic series and Sky-Byte has always been my favourite character in the show but unfortunately I never got the original toy till his new toy came out years.
Car Robots is what got me back into Transformers. I saw a few episodes on the old-timey Internet of the Japanese series and knew I had to have them toys. I ordered Fire Convoy, God Magnus, and the Autobot brothers from a website that think may have been Robot Kingdom or its progenitor, and I still have them on display today. Convoy and Magnus electronics still function and have great phrases in Japanese.
I loved this series! It took me back to my childhood. I wish they would do an update on Team Bullet Train so we can get some actual scale
This video unearthed a memory that has been buried deep in my subconscious for years
The anime years, RID gently included, were my formative years with the Transformers and my personal favorites of the franchise. So much so that for quite a while after the 2007 movie came out I kept hoping we'd get another Transformers anime but it seems that won't be happening again.
I loved this show & was saddened on many levels by it not airing on Cartoon Network due to news coverage of events at the time. I had a dealer in Japan who sent me a bunch of the toys which are still awesome! I really enjoyed the Japanese packaging. Great video sir!
I'm a devoted TF fan and collector since 1984. I have fond memories of 2001. I purchased my first RiD figures the weekend i went to BotCon in Durham, NC that year. What a great weekend that was! Good times!
Scourge was my favorite character on this series. I really hope he appears in other cartoons and comics someday.
I was 6 when this show came out and loved every second of it. I loved the ruination set and was blown away when my brother and i watched starscreams brigade from G1 and saw that the combaticons were the same toys.
Anyone else rewatching this after the Haslab omega prime review?
Yup! And watching the show for the first time. On episode 31!
RiD Prowl was the third transformers toy I ever owned and the only transformers toy I own that still has all of its pieces. My first transformer toy was Hooligan (though he fell apart very quickly in my 8-year-old hands.) and my second was the Beast Wars toy Buzzsaw (which again didn't stay in one piece very long. Those plastic joints were kind of fragile). After Prowl, I'd gotten Midnight Express. I have a strong memory of getting a toy of Smokescreen the literal day before watching the Armada episode where he gets 'killed' off. I won't lie: I cried.
I love this series, I've managed to collect the autobot Brothers, Sky Byte, Scourge, the Build Team, and a few of the smaller repaint figures! Love them all!
I actually liked this show. I saw only a few and immediately I got into it, mainly because I got the Generations Skybyte and wanted to see what his personality was.
RID was my personal entry point into transformers, I had the first 9 episodes on DVD and watched them on repeat for days.
I loved this show when it aired. I remember calling my cable company to find out the channel and time it was on and set an alarm for it when I was a kid. I have it now in a bootleg dvd set but I’d love an official one someday.
I'm surprised didn't mention the various Fun Pub appearances of RID Optimus. Recently I managed to get my hands on that awesome Transformers: Cybertron: Balancing Act collection IDW published back in the day, which had the Collectors' Club comics from 2005-2006, and I was totally blindsided by RID Optimus' and Ultra Magnus' sudden appearance there. Would've been a neat thing to throw in here, seeing as it's one of the only comic book appearances of any RID 2001 cast members.
I had the full Cybertron collection when I was six. It was my first full series after watching Transformers 2007. I’ve loved this franchise since. Can’t wait for a Cybertron Basics solo episode if there is one.
Rail Racer remains one of my all time favorite amalgams (not allowed to call him a combiner) and very much one of the prides of my collection.
I was born in the late 70's, and was all in on G1 when it came out. But between my age, not being a big animal guy per se, and the fact that all the characters were new, the Beast-era shows and toys never grabbed my attention. But I remember well being in a store with a friend of mine who was also a TF fan and seeing RID Prime. That was the moment I began to get back into Transformers. I bought Prime that day, and ended up eventually getting all 3 Autobot Brothers and Wedge. I watched some episodes of RID as it came out, and liked them (except for the whole "separate continuity" thing) but could never find it airing on the town my college was in and so didn't keep up with it. But it kept the TF fan in me alive, so much that I watched far more episodes than I should have of Armada when it came out, in an attempt to like it.
RID was a nice, light story. Because of the pre-established limit of episodes they were able to finish it without making it unnecessarily long or with a lot of filler. It will always be one of my favorite series.
This was the series that reignited my Transformers collecting, loved the show and all the new molds.
I feel like RiD is very underrated series. It was very fun. I wouldn't mind a re-release. I understand why they had to re-edit some episodes but I would've been fine with the original.
I still have my RID scourge figure, almost complete too, only missing his darts.
Made me the black convoy nerd I am today.
2001 RID was my first introduction to transformers and the story it shares
Well that and the 1984 transformers movie
This series criminally underrated by everyone on the planet
It was funny, compelling, action packed and more then filled the role of just filled considering that’s all it was meant to be
I will forever respect and love this show with all my hearts it is perfect, perfect everything, down to the last minuet details
Thank you for doing the basic on the Robots in Disguise (2001) since it considered to be my favorite cartoon throughout 2000.
I used to belong to an RPG forum that was originally based on Car Robots. I miss those guys.
I have fond memories of this series. Actuallt a favorite character of mine was Kelly Shiragami.
I remember I was a fresh men in college when this came out and it got me back in to transformers I loved the Japanese packing.
My favourite show. So nostalgic.
I remember the 9-11 attacks happening during the airing of RID. But I didn't know about episodes being edited or pulled. Thanks for the info 👍!
Thats not what he said.
But remember it however you want...
By the time Transformers RID came out in 2001 I was heading into middle school. At which point the joking nature of the series rubbed me the wrong way. I thought at the time that I wanted "serious stuff" out of Transformers, but I still somehow ended up loving Transformers Armada when it came out the next year. The main thing that kept me watching RID at the time was Scourge and the return of the Combaticon's toy models (which had been my favorite when I first got into Transformers during G2). Looking back on it now the show deserves a better legacy than it's gotten.
I consider Car Robots to be one of the most underrated series in the history of the franchise. It was fun, gave us some good toys, and is one of my favorites to this day.
Loved this video almost as much as I love RID (2001).
In my opinion, and I grew up with G1 (started collecting Transformers in 1985), it is one of my favorite series (both toy-wise and show) from the franchise.
I still wish they would make a proper (meaning about 6 inches) anime style figure of my favorite character from the series, T-AI.
I think primes alt mode should always be a fire truck tbh, it's so heroic
I have been trying to find the name of this series for years amd couldnt remember it until ur vids. Hell i had thought it was forgotten until i saw a sky-byte toy in the store i work at. God i loved this series.
RID is what initially got me into transformers, since I was 8 at the time
Robots in Disguise was my introduction to transformers. Skybyte was the coolest thing to me as a kid. I've got levahk kal from bionicle, now I just need the space shuttle from RiD to complete 5 year old me's wish list
I actually remember the September 11th influence on the show quite strongly even all these years later. I had specifically gotten up early that morning to watch RID, and when it ended I started flipping through channels just in time to watch the second plane hit the World Trade Center live.
Need a basics on Erector and Kiss Players
M.S.Piranha Plant Advanced NO GOD PLEASE NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Dude! Really!!!
I'mma quote Sam for a moment: NONONONONONONONONONONO
Would a video going into detail on Kiss Players even be allowed on RUclips?
Something tells me that will be a April Fools video.
I loved this series!!!!! I did not care at all that much for Beast Wars. I’m a G1 80’s baby. I could relate to this series a lot more. Hell my Ford F450’s license plate says Scourge!! Lol👍👍
The basics on transformers animated
I liked the Decepticons like Scourge and Ruination. Combiners are always cool.
This toy and video series got me all excited again for Transformers after having pretty much forgotten them altogether several years earlier (in my teens). I started collecting again and still am to this day. I would really like to see an original uncut pre-911 video series released after all this time. Or even a good bootleg. Great video sir!
RiD was my first major Transformers series. My Grandmother gave me Ultra Magnus for Christmas once, while my parents gave me Optimus. It was awesome.
Though I'll admit that I've never had the patience to watch RID the whole way through, I've been collecting TF figs for over 15 years now, and I still hold that the X-Brawn mold is in my Top 5 faves.
This is my favorite and the best transformers series, you can say all that you want
I jumped on the TF train during the end of beastwars/beastmachines, but RID 2001 really cemented my love for TF and the combaticons.
As an older fan, remember passing through Smyths toys on a college lunch break, and first seeing an endcap of spychangers , great to see transformers back as cars
Transformers robots in disguise filler my backside. It was just as good of a series as anything else standing on its own merits and falling on its own weaknesses. Give it its props!
I must have watched a couple episodes of this when it was on Fox Kids, and I was like, "Nah, these aren't my Transformers."
I actually woke up early to watch the new Transformers cartoon on September 11, 2001. Imagine my surprise when I turned on the TV.
Sad to know that we never got an American DVD release of this series!
The autobot build team were my first ever transformers toys that I still have to this day.
I remember giving this series a solid chance. I was so excited about the return to vehicle Transformers that I wanted so bad to like the show, but in the end I just couldn't bare to finish it. This was the show that taught me that it was ok to hate the show, but still appreciate the toys. Of course, then Armada, Energon, and Cybertron didn't do me any favors ether, except for finally getting a nice Unicron toy that I still have to this day, with my G1 display.
I was one year old when the series came out, I don't know if I ever watched it, but I do remember my mom telling me stories of me climbing up stuff and trying to take my dad's Ruination figure. I guess I've always been a Transformers fan. I think the first episode of Transformers I ever saw was War Dawn, either that or the First episode of Energon.
