Here's a fun fact: when the steep decrease in Transformers popularity when 1990 came around, Takara had a lot of concepts for new toys, but they were hesitant to sell them out of fear of them underperforming in the market. Because of this, Takara went ahead and made an entirely new series outright. This series, known simply as the Brave (or Yūsha, in Japan) Series, started with the anime "Brave Exkaiser." Exkaiser was a huge success in Japan, prompting Takara to make more installments in the Brave series, all leading up to one of the most popular mecha anime of all time, King of Braves: GaoGaiGar. Nobody asked me for this history lesson, but I felt like sharing it cuz I think it's pretty cool.
The fan consensus may consider GaoGaiGar to be the best, but I think Dagwon was the better series if only because of how much it actually matured the Brave saga.
Considering the Japanese Transformers inclination for combining all of the continuities into a cohesive whole... you might say they're production philosophy is: "Til all are one"
Also notice how the Japanese toy adverts have the toys flying around or moving by themselves whereas US adverts always have a kid moving or otherwise playing with them.
They probably don’t want to give the illusion that these toys can actually fly. Then again the adverts should have flashed NOT A FLYING TOY like in Toy Story if they were really worried that kids were that stupid.
@@_V.Va_ i am making a remake of the Final Cybertron episode Beginning with the King of The Hill cast and will be a pilot for a shared Universe of Films and shows.
The good about Japanese continuity is humans. In season 3, humans studied space exploration in Cybertron. They even have a human space pirate. In Headmasters, humans began traveling in space and establish colonies. In Victory, humans have multiple space colonies and joined the Autobots to fight the Decepticons. One human space colony was destroyed in episode 1 and Star Saber adopt the last human kid from the said colony. In Zone, both humans and Autobots pushed the Decepticons back. Consistency.
I have to admit that IDW's Star Saber was a big part of why I eventually just stopped buying their comics. I mean, Lost Light was undoubtedly an enjoyable series overall, but I couldn't help feeling bitter than James Roberts basically took the Star Saber from his fanfic and made it official. Part of it was out of fear that since IDW's stuff influenced quite a few of the toys (e.g. Chromedome in Titans Returns having mnemnosurgery skills), the next time Star Saber appears in toy or animated form he might be based on the monstrous IDW version instead of the heroic G1 version. Sure enough, while his Masterpiece toy is based on his G1 design (and his profile in Japan is his G1 self), the one released in Australia was based on his IDW version. Plus, during the Power of the Primes vote for the new Matrix bearer, his bio clearly references the IDW Star Saber's intolerance. He tried to be a good dad over in Victory, you know? Why is that never played with?
@@EC-ms1jr I never got it either... but then again, we named robots things like Starscream, Soundwave, Ratbat, Ironhide... hell that's not even getting into the toy-exclusive names like Erector and Lube.
it's like watching divergent evolution. Over here in America G1 styles remain near and dear to everyone's hearts and no one could replace Optimus Prime. Yet, in Japan the story continued onward and upward, farther and farther, changing and shifting with each new idea from the writers to the point that it was hardly even recognizable as Transformers anymore. It'd become it's own, entirely new and different species in a way.

I'd hardly count IDW's radical departure of a take on Star Saber as a triumph of fans having better access to the Japanese series, given the character was largely based on one writer's interpretation from that time when information was harder to obtain.
One thing I can appreciate about the G1 animes is how the cast is ever shifting. I think it takes more advantage of the franchise's vast world and cast more than just sticking to the fight between Optimus Prime and Megatron. It's that ability to move passed the G1 cast that we really haven't seen since the end of the Beast era really. Not that I have a problem with seeing new spins on the G1 cast, I love seeing all the ways those characters can be reinterpreted, but something about this type of world progression that impresses me. It kinda reminds me of the Star Wars expanded universe or different eras/variations on Mega Man.

Takara really did a great job expanding G1, almost better Hasbro ever did. The Legends line sure was great, too bad it came to an end. And with the brand unification, except exclusives, the toys in America and Japan will be similar (no more extra paint, no more retooling and... no more manga!). Thank you, Takara-Tomy. ;)
Great episode. It's probably the topic that I've been waiting for in a long time. Also congrats Chris on two years on the basics. Hope we can see more from you.

Wow, this was much more complex than I thought it would be! I don't think anyone else could've boiled it down to an easy to understand video, nice one, Chris!
Congratulations on a second anniversary video, and thank you so much for showing this to the wider world. I have always appreciated it when there is a single cohesive continuity, and there was so much to learn. May the coming year bring you much happiness and more knowledge to impart!
I'll always have a soft spot for the Japanese era of Transformers, including Victory, Beast Wars II and Car Robots. ☺ Oh, and congratulations on 2 years and 60K subs! 😄
Just imagined an Omni Productions dub of the Basics and now I can't unhear Rik Thomas rambling on about Chris McFeely, Cybertron Consultant. Congrats on 2 years and 60k, and an absolutely ripping episode to top it off!
I'm kind of surprised no 3rd party company has tried to tackle a violenjiger figure. It looks like you could actually make a decent one that could transform into those weird bug things
Thanks for this great episode! Growing ups in Latin America I actually recall seeing the Japanese version of the Transformers. I was so confused years on when, now living in the US, so much of the storyline and characters I remembered weren't part of the Transformers cartoons. I only learned about the difference in American and Japanese cartoons through your channel. Thank you so much!
Man oh man, did I ever love micromasters when I was a kid. I had a pair of bibbed overalls that had a pocket that could fit three of em. The early 90s were a mixed bag.
Well this was ver fascinating. And I’ve experienced it first hand. I managed to get a hold of Transformers: The Manga vol 1, 2 and 3, which collected all of the Manga all the way up to “Operation Combination.” I was very pleased with it. I’ve also managed to track down and watch all the Japanese transformers cartoons. Now I just need to somehow track down all the other Transformers Manga out there. (I’m specifically looking for the Generation 2 and Beast Wars manga).
Truly awesome thanks for this. I feel fortunate to be one of the few US based fans that actually knew about these series back in the late 80s thanks to a friend who was an exchange student from Japan. From having an original famicom disk system, to showing us VHS recordings his cousins had sent him of Masterforce, I'm so glad I knew him. It wasn't until botcon 98 however that I would start to get my own bootlegs of the Japanese series. To me Headmasters, Masterforce & Victory ARE the official seasons 4-6 that should have been produced by Sunbow but never we're. Thanks Takara & Toei for picking up the slack. I just hope one day the pages of Zone, RoC, and IC ate collected together for an English translation.
Man, the Japanese divergence was quite impressive in scale. And the way the story’s continuity never fully ended, even after the last episode the story still continued in the magazine.
It's actually rather amusing, for all the criticism of Hasbro never seeming to let go of G1, they at least seem to know to make multiple series, universes, etc. The way Takara handles it, it's as if they're trying to tie practically every G1-inspired thing into one sprawling story that sounds cool but can sound rather convoluted.
Pio Nepomuceno Isn’t it kind of similar to the current divergence of continuity from the expanded universe of Star Wars to the one Disney wanted? I know, “similar but different” and all that jazz but to say that we can’t compare this to Star Wars is a bit ignorant, if I say so as a normal person.
14:40 Optimus be like... “yup thank you takara ☺️😏” even I can imagine bay wanting a scene where he wanted one of the human female characters to bang a robot
as much as i love optimus, i feel they should give the other autobot leaders some sort of "away team" job so they can crossover from time to time. same goes for the decepticons and all of their leaders. i suggest this mainly because i don't see hasbro letting anyone else take optimus's spotlight
@@LucasTigy2 Amusingly, the latest story of the mobile game Earth Wars does have Optimus intending to step down as leader, leading to Laser Optimus (established in this game as being from an alternate universe), Star Saber, and Optimus Primal (plucked out from the far future) wonder and decide for themselves who among the three should become the new Autobot leader.
Huh, Deathsaurus's Fortress happens to look a bit like the Tarkin superweapon from the original Marvel Star Wars comics (which happens to have recently been revived). Coincidence? I'd guess so, actually.
I'm on the 3rd disk of Japanese Headmasters, and what a treat it is to see my favorite toys as a kid get their time on the screen! I'll be getting the the other Japanese series as well!
Thank God in Europe, right after season 3, we followed the Japanese continuity instead of the american one. Watching Headmasters and Masterforce was defenetly better than having to watch the US season 4 (the rebirth). Perhaps this is why the toyline remained popular in Europe while it declined in the US.
I remember hearing rumors in the early days of the internet that Sunbow had actually dubbed the first 15 episodes of Headmasters but the masters were destroyed in a fire or something and Hasbro just said screw it, were done.
Japan got all the best stuff! Thank you for putting this together. I've read a lot of the terms used and figured out some of it, but it's nice to get a comprehensive overview.
Chris, if Shout Factory would release the Japanese Beast Wars exclusives and Car Robots/Robots in Disguise series it would be the Transformers taking full circle for the characters.
You do us a service pal, I am grateful. I know theirs only so much material out there but as long as you keep pumping these videos out I will always watch them. I shifted and squirmed all day waiting to see theses REAL tangible objects turn into alien robots with human like soles go on adventures. LoL It's the best kind of Science Fiction. and still today that kid says "cool!" LoL Anyway, Thanks :)
Thanks for the video Chris, your videos have clarified so much for me over the last 2 years. You're amazing dude. If we could, when could we get a Japanese Beast Wars video? I'd love to see a video about those series.
Fun fact. While the original dub of the cartoon series was in English, Hasbro commissioned Toei Animation of Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon fame to animate the series.
Very interesting with how they are trying to make everything tie in. Was so ecstatic when Shout! Factory gave the US the three Japanese series after season 3. Here is hoping they can or some company can get the license to release Beast Was II and Neo here in the US. Would love to be able to see all of both those series without having to hunt for episodes on RUclips.
Interesting how transformers was a perfect coming together of a long history between the American hasbro and Japanese takara, only for them to each take it their own unique direction again

Happy anniversery, Hope you do a "part II" featuring the Japanese Beast wars series
Wish that Shout Factory would release the Japanese Beast Wars exclusive cartoons just like Generation 1 to be complete with each other.
@@davidsaunders8194 thankfully we have fansubs in youtube
Problem is those fandubs are so bad that I get turned off very quickly and just brace myself until the actual release of them on DVD like Shout Factory did.
@@davidsaunders8194 I think you're confusing fanDUB (voiceover) with fanSUB (captions which translate the Japanese dialogue)... Our group recently translated the entire last two G1 Japanese Beast Wars series (II and Neo) and are available to watch on our channel. We hope you enjoy the series, as we've put a lot of work into translating them to ensure they're as close to professional retail quality as possible.
@@akmalfakhruddin7285 You're welcome 😉
Happy Anniversary Chris, I always enjoy hearing the odd translations of the Japanese names. Keep up the great work and let's enjoy many more years of The Basic's. 'Till All Are One.
I asked about a THE BASICS episode on the Pre-TransFormers toylines that became Gen 1. I can't wait for that eventual episode.
Still, can't wait for the next episode, as always. :)
Check out "The Toys That Made Us" if you have Netflix. Season 2 had an episode dedicated to the toy origins.
If I had Netflix, but I don't. Besides, I'd like to see what Chris comes up with.
Mostly Diaclone stuff. Evil General Ingam of the Waruder Empire comes to Earth to have his forces harvest the new energy Freezon and the world creates the force Diaclone to stop them by using their vehicles that transform into mechs.
*Very* cool video. As you so rightly said, there was an air of mystery around the Japanese Transformers at the time. It's really good to have it cleared up in such a concise and informative way. Thanks!
i have been binging on these videos for 1 1/2 yrs now and this might be my new favorite (along with the DJD ep.). plus the toy commercial clips really do it for me. i just want to say Thank You for what you do. happy two years!
Amazing episode! This was awesome! I remember learning about the Japanese stuff in my early 20's and how exciting it all seemed. Thank you for putting in so much hard work!
Wow, this was much more complex than I thought it would be! I don't think anyone else could've boiled it down to an easy to understand video, nice one, Chris!
Happy anniversary the basics
Congratulations on a second anniversary video, and thank you so much for showing this to the wider world. I have always appreciated it when there is a single cohesive continuity, and there was so much to learn. May the coming year bring you much happiness and more knowledge to impart!
I'll always have a soft spot for the Japanese era of Transformers, including Victory, Beast Wars II and Car Robots. ☺ Oh, and congratulations on 2 years and 60K subs! 😄
Congratulations on the Channel´s Birthday! Your videos are one of the greatest on the internet!
Sorry for constantly asking but I would love to see the basics on Trypticon
He a robot Dino, that basic enough, isn't it?
Mecha Godzilla had a baby with a city.
@@HouseholdWheel or Mecha Godzilla and Deathsaurer combined into ones ruclips.net/video/gha5zf7kGZE/видео.html
Yes I've been waiting for this
I've been rewatching the entire series of the basics
Well this was ver fascinating. And I’ve experienced it first hand. I managed to get a hold of Transformers: The Manga vol 1, 2 and 3, which collected all of the Manga all the way up to “Operation Combination.” I was very pleased with it. I’ve also managed to track down and watch all the Japanese transformers cartoons. Now I just need to somehow track down all the other Transformers Manga out there. (I’m specifically looking for the Generation 2 and Beast Wars manga).
This is why I love this channel so much
And now I finally know how to correctly pronounce Ginrai. That's been bugging me for years. Thanks Chris.
Megatron: You can now call me, Super Megatron!
Vegeta: Hold my beer.
Vegeta: hold my form
10:30 Huh, I never realised Optimus' Animated design took inspiration from this one!
@@myriadmediamusings and that fact Takara screwed over BW & BM.
Wow way to tie it all together bro. Excellent video and I eagerly await your next project on THE TRANSFORMERS.
The Deception Breast Force. Yup...this is definitely a Japanese show all right
What if they where female
14:40 Optimus be like... “yup thank you takara ☺️😏” even I can imagine bay wanting a scene where he wanted one of the human female characters to bang a robot
Still waiting on starsaber to show up on TV again
as much as i love optimus, i feel they should give the other autobot leaders some sort of "away team" job so they can crossover from time to time. same goes for the decepticons and all of their leaders. i suggest this mainly because i don't see hasbro letting anyone else take optimus's spotlight
@@LucasTigy2 You mean like rescue bots?
@@cillianstewart9441 kinda like that, yeah.
I wish Deathsaurus and his crew return to the spolight.
They were great villains.
Happy Anniversary! Great video as always.
Huh, Deathsaurus's Fortress happens to look a bit like the Tarkin superweapon from the original Marvel Star Wars comics (which happens to have recently been revived). Coincidence? I'd guess so, actually.
this was AWESOME! best so far! happy anniversary!
As a collector I didn't really think about "grails"...until I saw Grandus, Sky Gary and Star Convoy.
So basically what I’m getting from this video is conformation that Japan makes everything better. Congrats on 2 years of this btw!!
It's insane, I always feel like the Basics started a month ago. Whoa!
I'm on the 3rd disk of Japanese Headmasters, and what a treat it is to see my favorite toys as a kid get their time on the screen! I'll be getting the the other Japanese series as well!
Great video Chris! Congrats on 2 years of providing the fandom with some great information!
I always hit like before the video even starts because I KNOW these videos are gonna be good!
The Basics! My favorite part of Saturday!!!
Same
Thank God in Europe, right after season 3, we followed the Japanese continuity instead of the american one. Watching Headmasters and Masterforce was defenetly better than having to watch the US season 4 (the rebirth). Perhaps this is why the toyline remained popular in Europe while it declined in the US.

“The ultimate life form”
*Jojo Awaken plays*
An Herculean effort that, frankly, explained away so much of what I was confused about since middle school. THANKS!
I remember hearing rumors in the early days of the internet that Sunbow had actually dubbed the first 15 episodes of Headmasters but the masters were destroyed in a fire or something and Hasbro just said screw it, were done.
Man, the knowledge you have about Transformers. Great video, I discover a lot of things, thank you for this culture bath.
I love how zany the JTF continuity gets! :D I would absolutely love Takara to make an MP God Ginrai!
Japan got all the best stuff!
Thank you for putting this together. I've read a lot of the terms used and figured out some of it, but it's nice to get a comprehensive overview.
The Japanese had the best G1 toy commercials.
It's hard to pinpoint the magic... was it all random decisions my guys in suits,... Budiansky? ... I guess. I remember as a small child sitting in the back seat of my dads car looking out and seeing these things.... jets, and semi trucks and Volkswagens. The mind stirred... I shifted and squirmed all day waiting to see theses REAL tangible objects turn into alien robots with human like soles go on adventures. LoL It's the best kind of Science Fiction. and still today that kid says "cool!" LoL Anyway, Thanks :)
I've been watching this series since the beginning
Japanese Transformers: “Look I’ma be honest with you....s**t is gonna get weird.”
Thanks for the video Chris, your videos have clarified so much for me over the last 2 years. You're amazing dude.
If we could, when could we get a Japanese Beast Wars video? I'd love to see a video about those series.
Hearing about how Japan continued the original series I can't help but think about the what ifs of if Hasbro kept the show going like Japan did.
Happy Anniversary Chris, great video!!!
Can we get a basics on Arcee?
I agree
No
Happy Anniversary!
The japanese series were broadcasted in Mexico, imagine my frustration when I was seeking a star saber figure
Fun fact. While the original dub of the cartoon series was in English, Hasbro commissioned Toei Animation of Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon fame to animate the series.
Yes finally I've waited so long for this episode thank god Chris did it!

@@urrsys9765 GODDO ON!
I've recently binged The Basics and one name I've been hearing a lot is Scorponok. would be neat to see an episode on him.
Is this what japanese Super Sentai fans feel when they watch power rangers?
This was very informative and easy to understand! This is awesome!
Interesting how transformers was a perfect coming together of a long history between the American hasbro and Japanese takara, only for them to each take it their own unique direction again
The absolute best thing about the Japanese series is the end credits of victory where the song asks if star saber ever wet the bed.
