50k plus the engine and a car???? I don't mean to be a troll or a dick, but why not just buy a v8 M3. they are going for 30k in good condition at the moment.
Vanneker, if your doing a build like this, you honestly think someone would take a low miles E46 M3 worth $30K, see my post below..spent $9K on the donor car
Just looked up how much you can get a e92 for with low millage. Apparently they range 24k-33k with less than 60,000 miles, clean title, one owner. It's a vehicle that you can buy an extended warranty for. I'm considering it for sure!!
@@djsonicceverything you said is true but everyone doesn’t just build cars for “cheap reliable power” some people like to build extreme, unique, and truly one off cars. You are out of your fucking MIND! LOL! Inbox me on RUclips and I'll PayPal you $500 if you can find a shop that will do it for that much in that little time. I'd even stretch it to 30k in 4 months. The ONLY stipulation is that you ask these shops to make the car fully integrated. Everything must operate like there wasn't an engine swap done (minus steering of course). Like I said in a previous comment, the engine was in the car over a year ago, so ask yourself what could possible cost around $50k in man hours? Allllll the small details. If you knew the shop and see the quality of work they do then you'd change your mind.
I Agree with Richard on this one 30k and 4-6 month wait time seems much more reasonable, then again a home build could be done for 15k. I'd say you could find an engine from a wreck for a good price and within that budget.
+STRAT-O-HOLIC Richman I was implying that you aren't doing this for cheaper. I've been a customer of Technica Motorsports, and based on their quality of work, non-overpriced labor, and the lack of knowledge about a swap like this, everything was priced fairly.
I guess this is the closest you can ever get to an E46 GTR short of owning one of the absurdly rare 3 road going models. Wonder how much cutting had to be done in the engine bay to cram that engine in
the closest would be the s62 swap from the same generation. sure this one might be a better more "race engine" but to keep it true to its roots the s62 would be more natural. plus more exciting to drive since it puts out more torque.
I think what people are completely missing is how well built this car is. If no one told you (and they fixed the steering), you'd think it was a brand new car. 50k is definitely a shit ton of money for an E92 in E46 skin, but that's not the point. I'm excited to see what they'll build next.

as a former E46 M3 owner, but being turned off by the wt and size of the E9X, this car is SICK!!!! I guess the biggest problem is the HUGE price tag, which makes it unobtainable for most. I ended up tired of the direction of M motorsports and left the brand for a P car. $50k can buy a pretty nice 997 with better driving dynamics, brakes, etc... So as awesome as this car is to me, it isn't worth the price (aren't E9X M3 in the 30s now? Wonder how much wt could be saved by totally stripping one? that might be the better option for some people).
I can relate to how you said it masks the speed. I just purchased a used b5 VW turbo, manual. And when I was on the test drive the previous owner got a bit irritated and asked me to slow down. I wasn't looking at the speedo and apparently speeding badly. I've never had a car do triple digits speeds on the highway so effortlessly. My first euro car and already hooked on the fit and finish and performance.
I understand the swap... But the lack of torque tho..... I would just put the VF-E V3Si Centrifugal blower on the stock S54. Same linear power, but more HP and much more torque below the curve. Prob 20k less as well. Great swap tho fantastic drivetrain retrofit.
What people FAIL to realize is that all cars are NOT built to achieve the highest Horsepower per dollar. It's comparable to people owning older and expensive cars. THIS car is going to age like fine wine. At some point E46 M3's are going to be hard to come by. So imagine how this guy is going to feel when he's driving a relatively rare car with a bad ass engine.
This is for the select car people who either just have enough money they could buy the car for 200k and it wouldn't matter to them, or someone who really likes the body style and wants the engine and OEM feel and integration. I can guarantee you that there are people out there that would do this. Im confident this guy will get business, maybe not from me and you
Absolutley agree. I have an e46 M3 and an E90 M3 and I am obsessed by both. Now I want the perfect car for me which would be an e46 M3 with the s65 BPM stage 2 tune and M-DCT GTS tune. Plus Akra Evo, Stoptech Trophy BBK and KW coilovers. I have all of these items but all these bits are not on the e46. I can totally see why someone would want this fully integrated conversion despite the price tag.
I think it'd be worth it. Then again I grew up playing Need for Speed Most Wanted and so I've always wanted to have an E46 GTR and this would be the next best thing.
You understand they're Rolexes right? If you really think $150 off is insulting I think you should take your sense of entitlement and go find a safe space my friend
Don't let that 50k distract you from the fact that if you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma you may be entitled to financial compensation.
Bending the steering shaft, maybe not a good idea. Could've made a custom motor mount that would've allowed the shaft to run through the header. This method is proven. Awesome car though, good work
Crazy conversion, why not go all out and custom remap/exhaust/carbon intake? I find these swap outs fascinating, if I had the disposable income I would do exactly the same. Comments about buying a newer E92 are totally irrelevant. Ditto to people saying they can do it in their own driveway in a weekend bollocks. This is what it's all about - trial and error, till it just works. Making an already great car that bit more interesting. Well done guys.
Motec ECU, compromised steering, no donor drivetrain, AND $50k? This is a joke. There's no way that labour and splicing wires is going to be $50k. $50k including the E46 and donor S65 drivetrain WITH 100% OE wiring integration might have made some sense, but as it is right with some aftermarket engine management? Hell no. This is pure idiocy. There are better shops out there for this stuff that actually know how to integrate the CANBUS systems properly.
I wanna take a BMW E46 coupe shove the S65 4.0L V8 in it and put a GTR body kit in it and maybe race prep it and turn it into a BMW E46 GTR replica that can kick it at the race track
The owner of the car wanted a shop car so he paid another shop to do all the work. Makes sense... not to mention the outrageous price for non OEM work.
Despite the insane cost, the car does sound amazing. The steering situation sounds a little sketchy though, wouldn't track it with some ghetto rigged rack.
Thank you for making this video! I am in a situation where I'm upside down on my 328i and was seriously contemplating just eating it and trying to find a shop to do an engine swap to make it more of a car but thanks to the numbers shared here ($50k+) I now say, PHUCK THAT!!! I'll plunk down and extra $10k and get a new car!
shit wild no way its 50k for a swap they just spit whatever money they need fam like no way it cost that much to do all of that genuinely that shits beyond me bro
$50K wasnt just the labor, the Motec with licensing, coding, wiring harness, hacking the factory CAN-bus, tuning and so it all works seamlessly was a part of that
thats literally still labor like literally paying 50k for a mf to code a ecu bro and to literally swap a motor in that shits beyond me bro no way im paying a singular mf to code my ecu for 50k genuinely that shit is insane to me
Probably there are millions of comments talking about the price of the "package" already, but I still can't contain myself... 50K, bro? 50K without the engine and the car? Come on. You know, too, that the work and parts needed are not worth that much. Even with all the Motec badassery And if it is, then you are doing something wrong. You are not doing any favors to your business. Who's going to invest himself/herself into a 80K BMW e46 M3 project that, on top of everything, will take half a year to complete? That's bad PR, man, and it's a shame, especially since the car seems to be awesome.
The price is hilarious. I don't know what goes into such a conversion so i'm not accusing the guy of screwing people over, at all, but man.. I looked up a random E46 M3 year (2004), and found several @ 50-60k miles cars for around 15-17.000$, and a couple of 41-42K milers, for 32-34.000$. Looking at the E92 i found several around 60k miles early M3s for around 24.000$, and also early (2008-2010) cars with 41-43k miles on the clock, for around 35.000$. You're not far off being able to buy a 40k miles E46, and a 40k miles E92, for what it costs to have an E46 converted. ..or you could buy them with 50-60k miles on the clocks, and have a lot of money left over for other cars, the down payment on a house, of some pretty cool vacations. Look i know.. Custom stuff is expensive. I'm just laying out one of the reasons why this isn't for me. Another is that i'd much prefer to keep the orignal engine in the E46, and mod the intake to emulate the sound of the E46 M3 CSL. But at least this is a built concentrated on some of the last BMWs i have love for, the N/As of yesteryear. ..and that counts on the positive :)
I can't believe no one mentioned M3 GTR probability, this engine is the closest you can get to have it's sound, after that the money is not important just for replicating the M3 GTR.
Bmw used a detuned version of this engine in the limited production E46 M3 gtr and as their race spec E46 but regulations made them remove it so they created the E9x so makes sense that it performs so well with the s65!
Dudes high af, 50k i nearly shit a brick. people wonder why i like my domestics and its not that i dont like euros but man euro cars are just to much fuss and money for me to be fucking with.
If you think that is bad, there are people who happily pay over 400USD for a pair of headphones that only cost 15USD to make. Matt talked about ridiculous pricing in parts on the Aston one take. charging over 1000USD for a Ferrari fuel pump that is the same pump as in a F150 you can get for like 80 USD. It is always like that. I needed a set of gears for one my machines. cost 150, including service and installation? 550USD. Found the company that supplied the gears to the assembly plant. Paid 35 bucks including shipping, and fixed it myself.
Great Build! 🔥 Ignore the naysayers! Projects like this are original custom builds specified to either the project builder or customers taste! they want that engine in a E46 M3 body no matter the cost I truly respect that and I can't work ut why people don't understand that? quite simple, its like saying why buy a Porsche designed by Singer when you can just buy a Porsche? because they're two different things and the price reflects that, I can't personally afford to do it but if I could then I would
These kinds of swaps are always really cool but you do have to weigh in costs of something like this... to me personally, this is not worth $50k. I've seen a M5 V10 swap years ago in a 3 series, I wonder how much it cost them. It worked good as far as I know
+Eag 8999 Plus Atlanta traffic blows ASS. 150k+ commute into the city every day. Shit, by the looks of it they did this One Take early Sunday morning. That's the only time I could actually take my car out for a spin.
Matt, next time you're in Georgia, try to go up to the Helen area up in the mountains considering that you're not that far away, which has some pretty sweet roads and sights up that way, not to mention the town itself is a neat little Alpine German style village that makes it seem as if you were visually in Europe.
TheSmokingTire WELL damn, I don't blame you. I love that track as much it scares the shit out of me because I had an nasty accident on there a couple of years ago in a 944. Anyways, that area I spoke about is northwards just past Road Atlanta and Atlanta Motorsports Park, and I definitely recommend it next time you're in Atlanta. Great food, great beer, natural waterfalls abundant, quiet, gorgeous views, great technical roads with plenty of elevation changes like a tarmac rally stage, etc and it's truly a hidden gem!
$50,000 is the cost of shutting down a small shop to do nothing but devote all hands to this project, not the actual cost. Still doesn't make this a logical move..
It's a cool build, but kind of redundant. He could've bought an e9x M3 for way less money, or modded the the e46 to perform way better than it is now with the S65. Not only is the S65 not the most reliable motor out there, but the S54 has broken more power barriers than the S65 has. If he was wanting the S65 in a lighter chassis that handled a particular way, he could've reduced the weight off a stock e9x M3, and added additional components to the chassis and suspension to handle the way he wanted it to, im sure. Motor swapped cars can have their share of issues. If he was going to do such a project, he should've gone bigger by putting an S85 or M70/73. He would've gotten more power from the V10, and a better sound with an engine that costs about the same as the V8. The V12 would've just been really special. I just can't understand this build. I guess the owner just wanted a V8 E46 M3.....
This is about cool. This isn't about the biggest numbers, or there would be a thousand other more capable builds. It's not just a numbers game. The weight distribution and handling are arguably better in the E46 as well. At least different enough to warrant different customers.
To the people who always cry about the price of engine swaps and say "for xx amount of money you could buy this way better car for the same price". Its not always about that, some people just want something interesting. If the owner of this car had simply gone out and bought the "way better brand new m3" we wouldnt even be watching this video. please keep your shit comments to yourself.
neat...but not $70k neat
with a few mods to the engine, M3 GTR body kit and rims, and a straight cut transmission would make it 200x neater

Bending the steering shaft, maybe not a good idea. Could've made a custom motor mount that would've allowed the shaft to run through the header. This method is proven. Awesome car though, good work
Finally RUclips updated the comments format ! I can scroll like the good ol days
Coilovers on the E46 M3 are our SS kit we just released :)
apparently they handled great, thanks guys!!
Yeah, crazy money, also 6-8 months! What the hell are they up to? Should take 2-3 weeks.
8:30 that look on Mat's face when number was thrown at him
Sick build, love the throttle blips on downshifts.
*clears throat* MOST WANTED 05 car!
that sound
$50K wasnt just the labor, the Motec with licensing, coding, wiring harness, hacking the factory CAN-bus, tuning and so it all works seamlessly was a part of that
thats literally still labor like literally paying 50k for a mf to code a ecu bro and to literally swap a motor in that shits beyond me bro no way im paying a singular mf to code my ecu for 50k genuinely that shit is insane to me
@@giovannilegue2177 did you miss the part where pretty much everything is completely custom? You don't "just swap" or "just code" this engine in.
very nice build - fantastic motor in possibly the best bmw model every produced
Best M engine + Best M3 look
Everyone is complaining about the price - the m3 e46 is an iconic bmw - it has a timeless design - this is what an e46 fan dreams about
This is bit like M3 GTR (special edition e46 / bmw's race car back in the day)
I like that his name is Tyler. I also like S65's and E46's
my favourite M3 model with my favourite street BMW engine
For me, the s65 is the best sounding v8
agree 100%, why I did the swap
Big fan of the podcast Matt! You should get Harris on the podcast again, Transverse Skidmarks and the LA autoshow one where so much fun to listen to!
Hey Matt, when were you down here, and how did you enjoy Atlanta country roads? It's getting frigid down here now, but that E36 is smoking hot.
50k? for an engine swap is outrageous!
Oh the S65 symphony. The best!
awesome Technica Motorsports ftw! great job guys
Those drive-bys sound different from the standard V8, very cool.
Does anybody else noticed the M5 e39 at around 3:16, on the side of the road? What a beauty!
First One Take I've watched in while.. why? BECAUSE V8!
What $400 headphones cost $15 to make?
+Bad Drivers of Columbus, Georgia It's an analogy, don't be so literal.
it's an exaggeration but probably beats
www.ferrari-by-logic3.com/ferrari-headphones/ferrari-cavallino-t350-heaphone
Next time you are in Atl you should go up to Suches Gap. Its known as the Georgia dragon.
Maaaaaan, i thought it said s85. Who doesn't love that v10.
Great Build! 🔥 Ignore the naysayers! Projects like this are original custom builds specified to either the project builder or customers taste! they want that engine in a E46 M3 body no matter the cost I truly respect that and I can't work ut why people don't understand that? quite simple, its like saying why buy a Porsche designed by Singer when you can just buy a Porsche? because they're two different things and the price reflects that, I can't personally afford to do it but if I could then I would
That exhaust note is NICE!
These kinds of swaps are always really cool but you do have to weigh in costs of something like this... to me personally, this is not worth $50k. I've seen a M5 V10 swap years ago in a 3 series, I wonder how much it cost them. It worked good as far as I know
for real no way it cost that much
BUT GUYS!.... You get full integration lmao
I was into watches for a while. It will break your bank but it's so worth it lol.
Why not hit blood mountain? It is about a two hour drive and is up near the Tail. It is way better than any canyon.
eag 8999 lol 2 hours each way.
+Eag 8999 Plus Atlanta traffic blows ASS. 150k+ commute into the city every day. Shit, by the looks of it they did this One Take early Sunday morning. That's the only time I could actually take my car out for a spin.
do you have any other watches other than rolex's? Just picked up my first 'proper' watch a speedmaster. Great video as always btw
Matt, next time you're in Georgia, try to go up to the Helen area up in the mountains considering that you're not that far away, which has some pretty sweet roads and sights up that way, not to mention the town itself is a neat little Alpine German style village that makes it seem as if you were visually in Europe.
Juan Andrés Suárez González I was there to race at Road Atlanta. I didn't leave the track all weekend
That engine sounds great.
Extremely cool; the all in price does give pause- lot of options in that neighborhood.
That trucked popped out onto the road like it was an obstacle on a driving test theory video
For a moment I thought you weren't going to talk about on centre steering lol
50,000? You can get a 550i, e46 m3, and an e92 m3 for that
$50,000 is the cost of shutting down a small shop to do nothing but devote all hands to this project, not the actual cost.
At least different enough to warrant different customers.
bobs watches?? fucking nice job matt, that place is awesome!!!!
If I click the link many times... Do you get more money?
To the people who always cry about the price of engine swaps and say "for xx amount of money you could buy this way better car for the same price". Its not always about that, some people just want something interesting. If the owner of this car had simply gone out and bought the "way better brand new m3" we wouldnt even be watching this video. please keep your shit comments to yourself.
you get it, and thanks..opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one
I want the Pepsi dial mechanical time piece..!
and the BMW looks like a blast to thrash..!
