This BMW E46 M3 features an aftermarket "Stage 1" Turbocharger kit from now-defunct BMW Tuner, Horsepower Freaks. While certain kits were available up to and over 800 horsepower for the E46, this street-tuned kit makes a healthy and, apparently reliable 450 wheel horsepower. It's quite a ride!

That's the magic of turbo on high compression. Best of both worlds but the tune has to be absolutely spot on, especially if you get a bit loose on boost. Been in an original integra type R B18C stock unopened +t build and that thing was pissed off at 12.5 CR and about 10psi. No dead spot. It just hauled ass with no compromise on driveability but tuning is absolutely critical. No room for error. This M3 sounds the business!
i would of been one of the masses yelling about how high cr and forced induction doesnt work. but i get it now, it makes sense.

Why be such an ignorant elitist? DC2 ITR is a legendary car, and I own a mint E46 M3! If I were to rip down a tight, technical canyon section, I'd take the Integra 10 times out of 10 over my M, even over my track prepped Miata.

sleepybird09 most definitely, it's the no compromise, all purpose vehicle. Some days I wish it had more low end torque but at the same time, the lack of low end makes the top end that much more satisfying.
I agree, I always wanted an e46 m3. But with the rising prices, and concerning issues such as vanos and subframe failures, I think the e92 is the right choice now.
Kyle W that it is, the e92 might be the most reliable M car ever made. You hear about rod bearing failures but it's blown out of proportion completely. I've only performed routine maintenance over the last 25k miles and it's my DD. No other car comes close for the money.

11:1 compression + boost + long drive. Studder can be caused by intercooler heat soak.

It'll most likely just detonate and lean out than stutter* if that was the issue - also, known AEM's tuning perimeters, it will go easy on the timing if intake temps get too hot. His plugs are probably shit or gaped incorrectly in my opinion.
IAT sensor and MAP sensor.... ECU would see the perimeters and start to back timing and and add fuel.
That and on a engine with a MAF sensor and a non recirculating blowoff valve, would definitely make the car run rich, especially right after changing gears.
Subaru guys know this issue too well, with open blowoff valves.
I've tue of caution on high HP applications, making the tune a tad rich and/or back timing a half a degree. ned ecus (90s nissan using HEX, haltech, and some oddball ones like MS), for street, you tune it more on the sid
TWIRKNOLOVE 99.9% sure plugs are shit. When I pulled them to do a compression test, they were starting to turn black. I'll be replacing them next week

Don't get me wrong, it's a popular car and there ARE those people who daily them but, there's a lot of things you have to put up with/sacrifices to make in order to drive a possibly 26 year old 2-door small RWD sports car.
More people would rather take the easier way out and daily something newer, larger, heavier, and quieter than to relegate themselves to an old, misunderstood "girls car".
(Cretins still think of the Miata from that goofy movie "Corky Romano" when they hear someone talking about the Miata, and how light and nimble they can be)

I owned a heavily built turbo maita as a daily for a couple years and it was awesome, embarrassed many higher horse powered builds on the twisty roads we have around here. I was in my early/ mid 30's and at 6'3" I particularly enjoyed the irony of the whole thing, got lots of funny looks as I unfolded myself from the tiny red missile I piloted sideways at every opportunity. That compression ratio is why it still has throttle response. And why I prefer high compression low boost setups for street cars or corner carvers. Sounds great too.

Nice video. I have always loved the M3. Several people have commented on the guy's demeanor. After watching so many of these videos...I think -- for a lot of people -- there's the combination of know you're on camera and not being accustomed to being driven in your own car (particularly with someone tooling it).

Matt, the terms you're looking for are Boost Threshold and Turbo Lag.
The former describes the time needed (or inability) to build boost at lower RPMs, while the latter describes the response when getting on the throttle.

Manny787 01-03 models have a really bad subframe issue that cause it to crack and make the car in drivable anymore if it got to bad

sweeeptheleg it's not as big of a issue as it is made out to be online. Unless the car has taken a TREMENDOUS beating over it's life most of them will be fine.
