[SOLVED] - The File Or Directory Is Corrupted Or Unreadable - Hard Drive Wont Open

- Ever try to open a USB hard drive or external drive and get the error message: "Location is not available" e:\ is not accessible The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
You can try to run the Chkdsk command in command prompt (CMD) to fix the disk. Now you should be able to recover your data and open the folder to access the files.
THE COMMAND: "CHKDSK /F /"YOUR DRIVE LETTER" (mine was E:)
You do not need to type anything else or launch any more commands.

I cannot emphasize how much you just saved my life. My friends and I spent an entire summer last year shooting an independent film, and spent all winter editing and doing ADR. I was doing music this summer in hopes to be done by fall. The file got corrupted. Our morale was at an all time low for about a month, now. On an impulse, after having accepted defeat, I searched "corrupted file external hard drive" and clicked on your video. I'm in tears. Thank you, so much.

Your computer has a sticking letter on the keyboard (sticking, 'cause you let a tiny amount of sauce drip on it ) and you take it to the computer store to have them check it, they call you, and when you pick it up the guy says; "It's running great now - we had to wipe the hard drive"..

OMG! You're my hero, I was panicking that I had lost the data on that file in my hard drive. Thank God for the good people like you on RUclips who show us how to fix this as I can confirm this does work just follow the exact steps in the video. Also, use run as administrator when you open up CMD as well and look up the drive letter as well.

Life saver, was going to explode because i thought I lost my files on my drive.
I bought an inateck external clone usb docking station & when i placed my HDD in it on my Win 10 new build it was acting crazy,
the explorer window would pop up & disappear, making it hard to access my files, then i got that dreaded "corrupt & unreadable" error msg & my heart dropped. did google search & came across the link tot his video.
follow his instructions in CMD & then I placed HDD in my old docking station & it pops up & all folders & files restored & appear.

In this case, the hard drive that I have was fixed promptly cus of this.

@@sujatabehede6088 I might be late, but I believe if you right click on the 'command prompt' thumbnail and then chose 'run as administrator' you should be able to access it. At least, I think that is what your issue is.

Thank you. I never thought of using that command to fix this issue. I was about to start using a disk recovery software. This fixed the problem in about 60 secs. Now the disk is back to normal.

you should also buy another backup disk just in case you disk fails permanently. They don't last forever.
