For people who are still figuring it out, this method absolutely worked for me on HP Pavillion Laptop with 250GB SSD in internal SATA interface and old 1TB Harddisk in DVD caddy. It took 5 seconds to work perfectly! No need of any other partition softwares. These steps are in correct order. Thanks once again bro

Havin diskPart open, as soon i plug the external bad drive even diskPart becomes unresponsive so writing "list disk" doesnt work. Unplug the external drive and it all works fine. Any ideas how to formar it back to new conditions? its a pretty new 2.5 drive from WD. Thank you
same thing happened to me. i cant write in cmd when the broken drive is plugged in
try to use "victoria" tools, but you have to enough knowledge to use it. you may help from google or youtube for how to use this tool

i have the same problem with you. To solve this:
1. Enter the "disk part" command first before plugging in the drive
2. Enter the commands ( Starting from the "list disk" ). For me, each command took a while to finish so wait patiently.
I comeback after 3 months commenting this video and still worth it

Diskpart is a powerful tool but it will only help with most logical problems. There are some situations when something like "Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool" from HDDGuru will enable you to recover a corrupted drive wherre DiskPart can't. It should be pointed out that major problems like physical drive issues and corrupt firmware, etc are beyond such tools. If Diskpart does put the drive in a usable state I would check it thoroughly with HDTune, Victoria or something similar to make sure the drive isn't failing. Should you clean then format the drive there is still a chance of getting your data back using a decent recovery program like GetDataBack, Reclaime, DMDE. They aren't free but are much better than most over hyped products out there.
My HDD was well. I tried to clean it and i saw a video that clean HDD with Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool. I tried it. Cleaning process interupted twice. Now, I cannot reach my HDD anymore. I plug it USB port, but PC doesn't see it for 30 min. After that duration, it see HDD. But I cannot do anything well with my HDD. What is the problem? What can I do for it?

1millonth viewer.... I had 3 hard drives in a box for a yr when I went to use them they wasn't recognized by my PC and they were working fine before. I typed in clean and it say diskpart has encountered an error

to whom reading this comment; i was using toshiba canvio 2 tb external hdd by the way, which is my latest hdd that i bought and also the least hdd that i would think i am going to have any trouble, but here we are.. so according to my own user experience, i don't recommend this product to anyone, even my older external hdd never made a trouble to me before, which is an samsung M3 external hdd..

Yes, but I would higly suggest you to hand over the drive to professionals since they have access to tools and software to extract the data.
I know its an old comment, but I visited one of the companies and they managed to extract almost all of my data!

Every HDD I tried this on, it worked, but the drive failed again shortly after. There is a reason why the HDD failed in the first place, do you really want to trust a Band aid fix on a HDD that failed once because it is damaged?

I bought an old sata 250gb drive recently for €8 and rather than bring it back as it wouldn't show up as a drive on my laptop - and the little bit of clicking from it that I heard didn't sound too bad - I decided to try your method before opening up, and hey presto! didn't work first time, but second time around, even though the format option didn't appear on windows UI, the create primary partition in CMD window did and in computer management I was able to do a quick format. I'm currently running a full format to make sure all's good so cheers!

For those that dont have access to windows, try to go somewhere with access to pc and internet. Buy a usb drive, download windows onto it using any pc. Use it as a boot drive. From there windows can run and you can proceed with these steps.

Then it could be a mechanical error. You need to physically repair the hard drive.

Whenever I type a disk part in a command prompt, the command prompt stops at the disk part and doesn't go ahead where I type the list disk. Kindly tell me.

I tried that part, it took long to show the diskpart, to enter the list part instruction and when I tried the clean option, I observed that it took long to respond but it eventually prompted that disk is clean, so most likely that's the same case

This method works well when you want to format a disk, but if you guys want to wipe a disk you can try aomei, I used it for once and it surprised me because it has so many wiping methods.

Hi Nitin - I have a duff 2.5 ins 5v 500gb hdd In a usb case.
The case works ok with other hdd, case led flashes then stays on and flashes when accessed
But with the duff hdd the led on the case does not stop flashing.
When I unplug the hdd, for a few seconds the drive registers and
opens a windows, that window then closes after a few seconds
because the drive is unplugged. When I leave the hdd connected no matter how long
the led flashes non stop and does not register a window or drive letter or show a
disk number in diskpart unless i disconnect the hdd -
I note that your diskpart runs under system32 version 6.3.9600
My diskpart runs under system32>diskpart version 10.0.17134.1 in windows 10
any ideas ?

Hi! i have a problem every time i run list disk it stops, and if i unplugged the hdd it works again but it only shows the primary hd. Do you know any other way to format it? this 2tb hdd appears like yours in the system explorer. Thanks for your help

The best tested and tried solution is THIS. just download 'minitool partition wizard'. open the free program connect your corrupted hard drive using a USB connector and wait for it to appear. after it does, just right click on it, select delete partition and wait for it to complete. and that is ALL. I fixed mine and it is working!!!
Warning: it repairs the drive but wipes everything. Back up drive if u do this . I did it on a slow drive thinking it will repair but it wiped he drive instead. Now I am recovering 400gb of lost data w another program!!! AT YOUR OWN RISK

is this applicable for an external hard dally isks? I have a 1 tb external hard disk which suddenly started transferring file slowly. After waiting for hours, error prompted. Eventually, the folder is not responding anymore. I badly needed a positive solution that doesn't need removing/wiping out the data. But if there's no other option, I might consider this option.
Still hoping for other options and help from anyone will be very much appreciated.
Of course this work for external hdd i made this video for external hdd , as u said in ur comment i understand ur hdd is extremely slow and i think you need to save ur all data in other hdd slowly slowly then completely formet your hdd or follow this video but after save ur data.

Mine had a problem, i couldnt format the drive because of read/write error or something. Then i tried to use 3rd party apps like EaseUS it still couldnt format the drive had said it has a bad sector in it. But this method works like a charm. It's actually the same method for turning your usb flash disk from bootable drive to a usual usb flash drive. BTW Thanks a lot
