Took about 18 hours but it worked thank you!!! For anyone panicking if it gets stuck, mine stayed on the same percentage for about 6 hours but eventually progressed, depending on how big your files are it can just take longer :)

The chkdsk repair took about 18hours, I assume do to the size of the external drive (8tb), glad I didnt end it as the actual master boot record fixes seemed to be executed at the very last minute. Again thanks! BTW, I looked at 2 other videos before finding yours, and your tutorial is the clearest and most complete.

Using CHKDSK /f works for disks that only show up as "Local Drive" So for example, if the disk with the problem is only showing up as "Local Disk (E:)", then open a command window (You need to be logged in as an administrator). Then type "CHKDSK E: /f" (the fix is for 'fix'. It won't format anything). Once CHKDSK is finished, your drive should show up normally.

Had a 4tb hard drive with many photo folders that had the exact issue as in your video. Followed your instructions, it took about 2.5 hrs to go through all the stages. Afterwards the drive did open, however many of the folders were deleted & the folders remaining were emptied out, I lost everything. I'm sure it does work most of the time, however depending on your drive issues you might not always get a positive outcome.

@@Siavosh9 It never worked for me after that. I had to do restore the data to another hard disk at a professional shop. But it worked with many people as I saw in the comments. So maybe keep on trying or call a professional shop for support. Hope it gets resolved

@@kelly1st I followed what the video said but also applied the method to another folder I will have to back track to find out exactly what I did. I was just basically throwing darts blindfolded and got lucky but the method worked. I was just so happy that I was able to read the drive. I'll definitely get back to you about where I applied the fix.
Thanks so much for your advise on this one. I had 32000 shots saved on a Comstar external drive and could not access them. You guys certainly made my life a lot happier when the problem was fixed and I managed to copy all the shots onto my PC drive. Brilliant!!!

Thanks so much for this video. I have many external drives and first time I ever experienced this! It was a new drive that I'd transferred some files over to, then I had this same problem accessing the drive afterwards. Had no clue as to what was going on till I googled and found your video here. I had formatted it beforehand so not sure what caused it? The only issue (ha) was that it's a 2TB drive so it took like 8-hours or so to complete step #5 (verifying the free space). I started to stop that step, but then decided to just let it run. When complete, it worked perfect as you described. THANKS AGAIN for your help!!

When I ran the syntax from the CMD line for my external 2.5” internal drive slaved out USB I received the error: “Cannot open volume for direct access.” Not only that but following your previous step before the CMD line, I am also “Not,” able to read/recognize the drive in its raw form. I’ve been battling this issue for quite some time now. I go from either, “disc is not initialized,” to “cannot initialize due to fatal hardware device error.” I’m about out of options here. The disk that I’m trying to access and recover data from was the former “primary drive,” from one of my other laptops. It has data that I need to recover, but cannot mount the volume for some reason. My one partisan of Hard-drive became 'not accessible'. I had used CMD command as described in this video and all processes and stages were completed but still same problem existed. On next day when I power on my computer, it goes through all the processes by itself during booting. After my computer started up, I opened 'MY COMPUTER' and found my concerned drive fully accessible. My problem was solved. Thanks for your valuable information.
hi, I know it's been a year and maybe too late but the same thing happened to me. I still followed every step that he said and it worked :>. I guess it doesn't matter whether raw or NTFS is indicated in disk management as long as you follow the command
Sadly the chkdsk took 5 hours to format on my 2tb drive and at the end it did nothing, disk still has no access. checked permission, full permissions still no access granted.
This happened to one of my 4TB HDD's after taking the computer apart and back together. The drives got over 3TB worth of Data on it I hope this works..

Guys if it says The type is raw CHKDSk is not available for Raw Devices Try this out: got to devices and printers. right click on the device that is not working. troubleshoot. the system detect the problem and say the problem was that "device was not responding." press okay, eject, and reinsert and see if you can open now! worked for me!!
What happens if it only says: “Disk 1 Removable( G:) online” but nothing else? It’s windows 10 btw. Does this mean there’s no Info written on the usb or that the Info is not recoverable? So the error I'm getting is not that it's corrupted or unreadable. I ran chkdsk and there are no errors. Im getting the prompt saying access denied. I am currently trying to replace ownership of the drive but I'm not sure if that's gonna work.
Ahh! Bummer! I've tried so many paths. I accidentally hit the "system restore" in HP tools and it formatted the HD even though I hit cancel. When I followed the directions here, the cmd prompt responded: "Cannot open volume for direct access." I removed the HD and loaded it into a "plugable NVMe SSD enclosure" to try and recover the data, but I have had no luck accessing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

how about, when i connected the drive, it shows f: and g: when i tried to access it, it doesn't do anything, i try command prompt it reacts (not freeze, but react after i unplug, and it says unavailable) after i unplug the drive, try formatting it doesn't do anything (again), i have two drives to fix, 1 from an old mini laptop (all the same as what i say up there) and another 1 tb from the broken laptop of my sister (the laptop problem is it wont boot and stays in DELL tm logo, the drive are replaced with another one, so the "replaced" one is the 1 tb). please, it'll be a waste if its not working

In your Disk Management window, it says "Disk 2: Healthy (Active, Primary Partition)". Mine labels it "Disk 1" but doesn't give the status. It doesn't say healthy or raw or anything.

My one partisan of Hard-drive became 'not accessible'. I had used CMD command as described in this video and all processes and stages were completed but still same problem existed. On next day when I power on my computer, it goes through all the processes by itself during booting. After my computer started up, I opened 'MY COMPUTER' and found my concerned drive fully accessible. My problem was solved. Thanks for your valuable information.

hi, I know it's been a year and maybe too late but the same thing happened to me. I still followed every step that he said and it worked :>. I guess it doesn't matter whether raw or NTFS is indicated in disk management as long as you follow the command

Sadly the chkdsk took 5 hours to format on my 2tb drive and at the end it did nothing, disk still has no access. checked permission, full permissions still no access granted.
This happened to one of my 4TB HDD's after taking the computer apart and back together. The drives got over 3TB worth of Data on it I hope this works..

heeelp please :( mine doesnt say anything in the disk manager. it only shows up but anything is blank. when i do the command prompt it says "cannot open volume for direct access" . the error message i get when plugin the drive in is "D is not available. incorrect function" . what can i do? i need the files !

type - diskpart
type - list disk
type - select disk 1
type - list partition
type - select partition 1
type - clean
type - create partition primary
type - delete partition override
type - exit
then go to disk management and create new volume
@@Harbi15 Don't select disk 1, he's trolling. select the partition accordingly (the disk you have problems with)

Try this out:
got to devices and printers. right click on the device that is not working. troubleshoot. the system detect the problem and say the problem was that "device was not responding." press okay, eject, and reinsert and see if you can open now! worked for me!!

What happens if it only says: “Disk 1 Removable( G:) online” but nothing else? It’s windows 10 btw. Does this mean there’s no Info written on the usb or that the Info is not recoverable? I don’t remember what I had on it or if it even had anything in it. The only thing I know is that when I wanted to see what’s in it it said: G:/ is not accessible. Incorrect function. I want piece of mind. How do I know if it has any data at all even if it’s not recoverable? Can you please help?

So the error I'm getting is not that it's corrupted or unreadable. I ran chkdsk and there are no errors. Im getting the prompt saying access denied. I am currently trying to replace ownership of the drive but I'm not sure if that's gonna work.
Ahh! Bummer! I've tried so many paths. I accidentally hit the "system restore" in HP tools and it formatted the HD even though I hit cancel. When I followed the directions here, the cmd prompt responded: "Cannot open volume for direct access."
I removed the HD and loaded it into a "plugable NVMe SSD enclosure" to try and recover the data, but I have had no luck accessing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You went into Disk Manager and pointed out that your drive is showing as RAW. Then you run CHKDSK in the command prompt and it says your file system is NTFS?
All I get when I run CHKDSK is the error "CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives :("

how about, when i connected the drive, it shows f: and g: when i tried to access it, it doesn't do anything, i try command prompt it reacts (not freeze, but react after i unplug, and it says unavailable) after i unplug the drive, try formatting it doesn't do anything (again), i have two drives to fix, 1 from an old mini laptop (all the same as what i say up there) and another 1 tb from the broken laptop of my sister (the laptop problem is it wont boot and stays in DELL tm logo, the drive are replaced with another one, so the "replaced" one is the 1 tb). please, it'll be a waste if its not working

how about if the error message is "incorrect function" ? when i am using my nvme ssd in the enclosure ? and it is also not detected in disk management
In your Disk Management window, it says "Disk 2: Healthy (Active, Primary Partition)". Mine labels it "Disk 1" but doesn't give the status. It doesn't say healthy or raw or anything.

As soon as I connect it file explorer starts to lag and it doesn't even show the capacity of my pendrive. when i double click it it says 'drive is not accessible. a drive which does not exist was specified.' when i used that chkdsk in command prompt, it got hanged and nothing happened after clicking enter. plz help.
