- Many people use removable storage devices to store data or serve as backup drives. After using it for a long while, there are chances that you may find the external hard drive not showing up in Windows File Explorer. In that case, you can open Disk Management to see its status. Usually, you would see the external hard drive show as “Unknown, Not initialized”.

There are two situations where your disk is shown as not initialized.
Situation 1: Not Initialized, Unallocated space
Situation 2: Not Initialized, No Disk Space
If your disk is in situation 1, you can fix it with two methods.
⏰ 0:52 Situation 1 - Method 1 AOMEI Partition Assistant
With AOMEI Partition Assistant you can rebuild your MBR and fix the disk not initialized issue, and it won’t cause any data loss.
1. Click AOMEI Partition Assistant and get into the interface of it, here you can see your disks and their information clearly.
2. Here disk 3 shows not initialized, unallocated space, right-click your disk, and click “Rebuild MBR”.
3. In this pop-up window, choose your system, and click OK.
4. Click “Proceed” and click “Apply”.
After that, your hard drive can be shown normally.

If method 1 is not working for your situation, you can directly use these two tools to initialize it, but it will cause data loss.

If your disk is in situation 2, you need to check your disk first to see if there is a physical error.
If there is nothing bad on the disk, you can turn off the PC, disconnect the hard drive for a while and turn on the computer. Then, shut down the computer, reconnect the hard drive to your PC and restart the PC to see if the disk can be shown normally.
If it is not working, you can try the two methods below:

Go check whether your driver is outdated. If so, you need to upgrade the outdated driver.
Here are the detailed steps:
1. Right-click the start button, select device manager from the list
2. Click “Disk drivers”
3. Right-click your external hard drive, and select Update Driver.
4. Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
After that, it would be worked.

If your hard drive’s problem still can be fixed after these operations, you need to check if there are bad sectors or if it is physically broken, you can use AOMEI Partition Assistant to do this.
1. Get into AOMEI Partition Assistant first.
2. Right-click your disk and choose “Surface Test”.
3. In the pop-up window click “Quick Check” and click “Start” to execute it, then the bad sectors and other information will show up.

Actually my disk was showing in disk management. I used CMD was creating partition to get initialise it. But suddenly power cut off happend so everything got shut. Now after my windows turns on it is not showing hard drive in it which I have connected through usb port. What to do Can't understand???

Hello there, basically this function can help you check and repair bad sectors but cannot recover the data. If you are looking for a data recovery tool, you are suggested to try this - WinfrGUI.

The details help me, though my part when I tried to do the disk management part when I tried to do the MBR part gave me a "Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)" message and I'm not sure how to fix that part.
When I tried initializing in diskmgt shows an i/o device error on my external drive (luckily). Will rebuilding mbr get the disk back online with all the data intact though.. if not, whats a good unpaid data recovery software

Guide is nice but unfortunately none worked for me. When i try "Situation 2 - Method 2 Check Bad Sectors" it doesnt do anything. For other working drives surface test window opens but no reaction or error for broken drive and previous fixes didnt do anything than pop error every time. Disk part show that drive 5 which is broken one is online but nothing works. I've tryed couple of things in that app of yours and it replyed with errors 6 and 45 and i got nothing. One thing i didnt try is switching to another cable but since i dont have any other cables to try im boned on that one for now. Im gonna try accessing that drive from windows install program and i might try rebooting into that screen where you set up for windows safe mode (good old times when it was accessed by F8 right after bios) tomorrow but something tells me that wont work either, i guess that 2TB external drive is gone for now.

So I dropped my EHD earlier today and didn’t think much of it. It’s wasn’t that bad a fall but it’s showing this error and I’m trying to figure out why it’s not readable. The cord works fine and it’s showing power but it isn’t doing the blinking thing as it’s starting up. It’s just staying on powered on.
Sadly the drive does not show in your Software and I can't do anything in diskpart because it thinks it has a size of 0 bytes.
The only tool that sees it correctly is testdisk, but there I can't write anything either.
The problem was the result of an empty battery during a full format using windows Partition Manager, so I don't need any data back.
Is it possible that the hardware got damaged due to the sudden power loss during writing?
It is possible that your disk is a little damaged due to the sudden power loss during writing, Here my suggestion is to try to fix it by running the CHKDSK command and if it is not working, then try the methods in this article.

I got the disk to come online but still getting the cyclic redundancy check when I convert to mbr or gpt
I converted my internal HHD to external HHD using the converter case. Its not accessible but its showing as Unallocated in Disk Management.
Can I use the same method shown in the video to access the data on it.

If you initialize it, it will cause data loss. But I'm not clear with your disk status, you'd better send your issue to AOMEI support team via email with a screenshot of your disk's status.

Hi, I want to ask is it possible i got this error because my enclosure i have here can't manage the storage capacity greater than 2tb? I have existing 3.5 HDD enclosure for my 500gb hard drive but as soon I plug my 4tb hard drive in my enclosure I got this error “Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized” without showing disk capacity... I'm planning to buy another enclosure for my existing 4tb hard drive that can handle storage capacity greater than 2tb and use it for as external hard drive for personal storage but I was hesistate a bit because i might encounter another error like this again, enclosure for this type of drive is pretty expensive here so I want to make sure if that is also a cause ... thank you.
Not very sure, I need more details plz. Which kind of enclosure are you using? And is your 4TB HDD a brand new disk(haven't been initialized before)? Is this HDD in MBR partition style?

I don't think I've ever had something run as poorly for no reason as the partition assistant did, anytime I clicked on disk surface test it did nothing and would almost crash constantly even when I wasn't doing anything on it

Thanks so much for your tutorial, but unfortunately it didn't help. I was looking for a solution for my 2TB Seagate Portable HD which stopped working. It's beeping and it shows "not initialized" plus "unallocated" on Disk Management. Also, Disk Management doesn't show its capacity properly, like it was 134217728 GB. When checking it on AOMEI Partition Assistant, it shows 0KB and 0 partition. The program shows an error message when trying to recover this disk. Nothing happens when I click on "surface test".
I have this same exact problem with same weird capacity number for the same external Seagate 2TB HD. If you've figured out a solution, please let me know.

@@AruanaACN I tried taking the portable shell off the HDD itself where the sata and power outlets are now exposed but I think I may have messed it up more. It won't even be detected on any level now and instead gives a beeping sound. Be very careful in taking the HDD out if you choose to do it. It was more difficult than I thought it would be. I haven't yet :( The only solution I think is to send it in for an expensive repair. I'm considering Luis Rossman because they seem the most honest.

I had an hdd with not initialized and 100% free disk space on the disk as shown. But the AOMEI could not perform the rebuild mbr function. If I perform wipe data or create partition on the disk by aomei, it shows error code 202 and can't perform the operation. Do you have any ideas?
You can directly initialize it in Partition Assistant or Disk Management since its an empty disk.

So I converted the disk and plan to move the os to ssd so I can boot from it and save other data on hdd, I cloned successfully with partition assistant.
I've done the step 1, and it turn into basic mbr, but it is still unknown, not initialized, unallocated, even it shows the volume. I did step 2, and found crc, and when I attribute disk clear readonly -> diskpart failed to clear disk attribute

I have 250gb Seagate hard drive I had swap pcb and also swap bios but it shows as 0 disk unknown not initialise. On right click it give option to initialise with MBR and GUID. What will happen of I chose MBR will it initialise and I can see data? Without loosing data? Pls assist.
If you click "Initialize" it will cause your data loss, you are suggested to try "Rebuild MBR" first.

Hi dear, sorry for the late reply we were on our holidays, rebuild MBR will definitely not cause data loss but it may not solve your problem 100% if your drive is not MBR damaged. It won't cause any data loss anyway.
Not working it says when click proceed it says "I/O device error" . What that means ?
When you try to initialize a hard drive via Disk Management and receive an error message such as “This request cannot be completed because of an I/O device error” or “The device is not ready”, the usual cause is that there is something wrong with the hard drives connection cable. You should adjust the drive's connection cable and try to initialize it again. Where possible, we recommend connecting the hard drive to another computer to see whether it is able to be detected and initialized.

in diskpart it fails to clear disk attributes for me. it shows its already online, but in disk managment it appears as not initialized and offline?
You can try to rebuild the MBR of the disk using Partition Assistant in the video to see if this would work.

I took my old laptop's hdd and turned into external hard drive but when I plug it in my PC and open disk manager there's nothing to show, even my other drivers (my other drivers is working though). so I can't use the method 1. tried updating it in device manager but with no luck. btw it say. sage 3639s scsi disk device. i guess my drive's faulty.

Hello, when I rebuild the MBR, all is ok, but there is one thing i don't understand, I have a 4To external Western Digital Red Hard drive but on windows i can see that there is more than 4 with 3 partitions of 1.96To ?!? when you rebuild the MBR how can you see the external hard drive, i need to attribute a letter or... what's the next step ? thank you
Do you mean how can you tell which drive is your external one? You can tell by their drive letters.

You can try the methods in this article some of them may cause data loss. But that's the only way to get your disk back to normal.
