- In this video we look at the entire evolution of Brian Griffin and Quagmire's rivalry from Family Guy. Voiced by Seth MacFarlane, we look at why quagmire hates Brian. Taking a look at the Family Guy cutaways, as well as the Family Guy full episodes, I've put their relationship in chronological order. From season 1 to newest Family Guy season.
We also look at the funniest Family Guy moments from Peter, Lois, Chris, Meg and Brian. As well as other Family Guy characters from Quahog Rhode Island.
I find it funny at the same time that Seth MacFarlane voices both Brian and Quagmire so when those 2 characters get at each other, instead of one actor to another, Seth is just talking to himself😂

Fun fact: In the episode "Must Love Dogs" it's revealed that Quagmire has admitted he hates dogs overall, and that could explain why he prefers cats in some earlier episodes too since he has some around.
I think Quagmire should make that clear to Brian in Season 8 episode 7

An important detail that justifies Quagmire's hatred is Brian's choice of words. When asking him, he doesn't say, "Why do you dislike me?" Instead, he says, "How can you not like me?" It reveals how arrogant Brian can be, thinking everyone should like him. You can forgive a child for thinking that since they're learning about the world and people around them. But not an adult who should know better.

A. Quagmire was the one that knocked Brian's teeth in the first place
B. Brian instead scammed Peter and the family as revenge for the teeth. You could still have Quagmire hating Brian for screwing the Griffins as it would vindicate one of his arguments about his dislike of him

But why would Brian screw over the Griffins in that case? In the original episode I thought the reason he screwed over Quagmire was because they already didn't like eachother. Him screwing over the people he lives with and actually likes makes no sense unless I'm missing something.
I disagree the point of the story was to show Brian was a jerk. Why would he screw Peter over. Peter is his best friend.
Brian scamming Peter makes more sense since HE was the one who made him loose his first set of teeth in the first place
One other instance that may add fuel to the fire was the one Christmas espisode. Qugmiere was waiting with his niece for Santa, and Brian first referred to her as a boy because she didn't have hair then proceeded to mention he was sorry she was going to die because she had cancer. This made her cry because she thought she was going to die. 'Road to the North Pole'

One thing i genuinely like about this rivalry is that; besides the sexual diviancy; it has made Quagmire far more of an actual progressive in comparison to Brian's more theactric progressive behavior.
Exactly why I hate Brian and love Quagmire too. Brian is the typical fake left-wing nice guy, who only acts the way he does because he likes to feel superior to everyone around him. He wears fake glasses, reads books he doesn't understand, writes terrible novels, and pretends he respects women when really he only dates bimbos. Like Quagmire said, he knows he's a bad person, but he's at least honest about it. Meanwhile Brian is like the Vegan of the group who never stops looking down his nose at people he claims are his closest friends. Like when Stewie became a normal baby, so he tried his usual mockery of the family with Chris, and they found out he likes to mock them behind their back to their baby (who unlike him, actually is smarter than everyone else, but rarely rubs their nose in it anymore)
Lets not forget that Brian immediately backtracked on legalising pot the moment Carter offered to publish his book

Brian couldn't just leave well enough alone and was so egotistical that he just couldn't STAND the idea of someone not liking him. I think from Quagmire's perspective he hates Brian because he pretends to be perfect and kind of fools himself into thinking like that. Of course there are going to be people that hate you because no one is perfect, but Brian is so needy and self centered he couldn't accept that because he needs EVERYONE to like him all the time. Brian fools himself into thinking he's some profound intellectual or smart guy and he's not, it doesn't even occur to him that maybe he's an idiot. A cultured and arrogant idiot, but an arrogant idiot all the same.

I have a feeling they hate eachother because they both mirror eachother, Brian being a bit worse because he tries to hide the fact he's an egotistical douche that gets mad/upset at others for calling him out while Quagmire openly shows who he is and doesn't care about what anyone thinks about it. Plus whenever Brian goes out with a woman that has some sort of injury or disability he takes advantage of it while Glenn just goes with it and moves on to the next.
Ngl that's why I respect quagmire more than Brian.

I like the "old" versions of both characters:
Brian as the genuine intellectual and voice of reason, faithful friend, and quiet long-sufferer of unrequited love.
Quagmire as the cheerfully heartless lothario stuck in the Irving Klaw version of the 1950s.
They were actually on pretty good terms early on the series. Specifically thinking of the episode where Quagmire Brian and Peter go golfing
It's funny, because I'm willing to bet that the writers just kind of thought one day "What if Brian and Quag hated each other" and that's how we got those episodes. But it kind of plays out to the casual viewer that he liked him, and then he slowly started to not.

I thought about that to. That’s the most disrespectful thing you can do at a funeral. I understand he hates Brian but you still feel very upset for your best friend, and his family. Quagmire shows little to no emotion or remorse at all. I truly believe he did it.

I watched the ups and downs of quagmire and Brian over the years, but I always enjoy your spin on it when you do the timelines. I remember that most recent episode I think it was close to Halloween when it aired. Lydia, loves timelines and I love Lydia’s timelines. Look forward to the next one soon. In Jerome is the new black guy, it was revealed earlier that Cheryl Tiegs was the one that got away from Glenn. When Brian tricked him to go to dinner, you hear Quagmire talk about it in the limo. Not the episode that happened when Brian went to Quagmire’s pick-up class
I know this is stupid, but i often theorized that all of the stuff Quagmire said to Brian in that one episode were all just excuses to cover up the real reason why he hates him. because after watching that one episode where Quagmire pretended to like dogs so he could date a girl it made me wonder if Quagmire's real reason for hating Brian is simply because he's a dog? like i said i know that's dumb and unlikely but it's the best i could come up with in terms of theory.

Quagmire did slept with Loretta but it was Loretta who made a move on him. It's mostly Loretta's fault since she cheated on Cleveland and even berated him since Cleveland apologize for not being able to provide in bed for her because he's tired. But I'm not saying Quagmire is innocent on this one lol. And Cleveland and Quagmire had reconciled anyways and Cleveland finally had the guts to divorce his wife! I'd say it ended up good at some way tho.

Quagmire is the lesser of two evils. He’s a sleaze, but he never hides who he is. And while he has feelings for Lois, he’s not a sleaze about it like Brian is. He’s genuinely in love with Lois, but also has enough respect for both her and his friend to keep those feelings to himself. Despite his contempt of Brian, I can’t see him caring enough about Brian to actually spend the time and effort in killing him. He’s aware that he can just very easily torment Brian with the fact that he only has a few years left to live and that the family will replace him very quickly when he’s gone.
What quagmire the lesser evil, okay the man literally drug girls, kidnapped them, has made many women pregnant then dipped. The man has hit on lois on multiplication occasions and try to sleep with her when Peter Lost his memory. He ruined many marriages and take advantage of anyone who he finds attractive.

I've always been Team Brian, not only does Quagmire's hatred for him come seemingly out of no where (and if it was what stewie said to his girlfriend that made him hate him that's not even fair) and while his roast of Brian may be accurate, the fact it's coming from a character who does the majority of what he was complaining about makes it a moot. For the rest of the series, Brian leaves Glenn alone for the most part (the realtor plotline was so stupid) and Glenn is the one to start most of the fights.
I'm team Brian because I don't think a predator has any right to judge a dog. 😂🤣😂🤣

It's interesting how the rivalry is one of the few things Family Guy had actual continuity with. Like they could have easily kept it at a running gag with Brian being Quagmire's Meg, but then Quagmire pushed Brian too far and started getting the abuse back. They're that toxic that they changed the status quo. :P

I know, even when I find Brian annoying from time to time, Quagmire is hypocritical too, he thinks about why he doesn't own anything to Peter he has the right to love his wife, and Brian is not a bad friend to Peter, he has supported more than him, even Peter see him like a better friend than Quagmire.
That dinner scene for why Quagmire hate Brian was the biggest example of the former being a hypocrite. As a bonus, Quagmire got a woman pregnant on purpose, well many women pregnant, while Brian got a woman pregnant by accident and without even knowing.

We've never seen his dad, we've seen his mom and look what happened to her, most of Brian's siblings are never shown or briefly shown but never have dialogue, be fought for gay marriage to be legal for his cousin, he risked his own life for Peter's fatass, etc.

I'm on neither of them because in my opinion, both Quagmire and Brian did them bad things to each other and it's more likely they started the feud with each other. I know Brian ripping off Quagmire was awful and Quagmire getting annoyed with Brian was ridiculous but I think that them losing memory might've started their feud, though that's my own opinion. I like the fact that both of them had started to like each other for a bit.

I think what needs to happen if they decide to bring the Brian/Quagmire hate train to a close is have the two go on a 4th wall journey together to beat up random Family Guy writers for torturing them with the out of nowhere hate for each other for so many years, with little to no care they were the correct writers that were on the hit list, giving Quagmire and Brian a chance to start over where they began in OG Family Guy, all the while being the massive dicks they are in what they did. The jokes write themselves with such a premise. 😆

In my opinion, Quagmire was ruined by the episode when he began to hate Brian. Quagmire is now grumpy even with his pals. I know Brian can be annoying and Quagmire has some valid points, but Brian is not totally a bad friend to Peter, he has given favors back to him when he got married to Lois, he did it to support and was patient enough with her about having sex and Peter felt more betrayed when learned that Quagmire was in love with Lois than Brian was.

I hate this rivalry, the feud between Brian and Quagmire is so ridiculous, it was never good but it was sometimes funny, but this feud is the worst and silliest thing I've ever seen and the worst of it is that it gets worse and they never develop their characters, both are obsessed with sex They are both friends with Peter and also the two smartest people in Family Guy, but one of them becomes a douchebag and the other is broken .

Actually, Quagmire explained to us why he hates Brian in season 8, but with the progression of events, Quagmire took this enmity seriously and personally.

Team Brian. I'll admit Brian has been a terrible character throughout the years. His rivalry with Quagmire comes out of nowhere and it get really annoying. But Quagmire was the one who started this feud and THAT came out of nowhere, not only that but sometimes Brian is minding his own business like when he was running for mayor, by Carol's idea, and then Glenn wanted to run for mayor out of spite when he already has a job and he even said that flying a plane was the only thing he knows.

There's a saying that you root for the hero but sympathize with the villain
Brian is the villain in this story. Even though Brian has done some vile stuff over the years and still continues to simp 24/7 but so does Glenn Quagmire. Quagmire may have points against Brian, but is he morally right? Does no one realize that Glenn Quagmire projected during that whole Brian roast? Has no one ever questioned the ideology of Glenn Quagmire? Brian may be the bad guy but how is Quagmire any different.
Quagmire tried to have underage sex with Meg in one episode. Quagmire being honest about being a sleaze doesn’t really validate him of anything. Charlie Manson was honest about his crap too, but he’s still a despicable excuse of a human being in the end.
I say with how many times Quamire has beating up Brian, the dog has the upper moral ground and, despite evolving. The feud with Brian is half hypocrite. I think it could be interest if in future chapters one of two things happen. Either Brian finally fed up with all Quagmire physicall abuse return the favor by beating the living daylights out of him.
OR a more wholesome episode in which Brian and Quagmire switch lives, either by exchanging bodies, or Brian turning into a human and Quagmire turning into a dog. A complete "Walk a mile in each other shoes" To see if the experience FINALLY make them bury the hatched and be at peace with one another.
Or here's another option, have Brian's son Dylan be dating one of Quagmire's legal aged and not look exactly like him daughters and both characters set aside there differences for their child's happiness in the end of the episode.

Quagmire has always been a favorite of mine because he is someone I wanted to be when I was a child, the good parts I mean not the sex parts.

Quagmire in My opinion is such a hypocrite. He rags on Brian for having feelings for lois. When he does. Quagmire ruined Clevelands marriage and while Brian almost did to Joe and Bonnie the two are still together. Yes Brian is a self centered douche but Quagmire Is just as bad claiming that Brian is bad because he's in denial about it. He claims he's at least open about it. That does not make it any better

Not to sure but think ya missed when Quagmire goes to jail and Brian is super happy and drives off chucking Quagmire the bird. I thought it's one of the funniest moments I've ever seen. I find it funny they don't like each other but have lots of similar traits.... You have a great voice and I put your show on to fall asleep too but rarely works as I get interested too easily. My opinion about the whole Brian vs Quagmire thing... they are both idiots. They both have their issues and they clearly don't work on them, Brian (although my favorite character in the show) is terrible as an individual for many reasons and Quagmire is no better either. Instead of Brian asking "How can you not like me?", the question we should be asking is "Why would anyone like both of them to begin with?" To summarize my thoughts, the feud SUCKS!

The results were 81% saying Quagmire, 9% saying A Future Brian, 9% saying Vinnie Brian's Replacement, and only 1% saying Unknown/Someone Else.
Brian is easily the worst Family Guy main character. Especially in modern Family Guy, everything Quagmire said was what many people have said about Brian’s character in the modern era of Family Guy. It makes sense considering Seth MacFarland voices Quagmire, and he knew about the criticism about the character of Brian, and he just had to include it in this roast of Brian by Quagmire. Ironic too considering Seth’s voice is literally Brian’s voice, and Brian’s views are primarily views on things like politics are just an extension of how Seth feels.
Back to Brian, he’s is such an un-like able, pretentious, insufferable, douche. I’m sure it’s intended that way, but comparing Brian now to early Brain is such a massive disappointment, and a tremendous downgrade considering he was one of the best characters during early Family Guy. Now, he’s easily the most hate-able and unlike-able main character on the show. I’d rather watch a Meg centered episode then a Brian centered episode. Freakin Meg, that’s how awful I think Brian is

Team Brian since in the beginning of the show he wasn't half bad at all while quagmire has always been the same throughout the show. Ofc I think Brian is a complete ass but quagmire is worse since hes been the exact same asshole since the beginning of the show. But in reality family guy is one of if not my least favorite show since the jokes have become repetitive and boring Im almost able to predict what their going to say next. But team Brian 100% he was one of the better characters in the early seasons. Also want to point out that quagmire physically hurts Brian and tries to kill him while Brian never had those intentions. Only intentions Brian had later on was to emotionally hurt quagmire which is still bad.
Also I need to add the fact that even tho I'm team Brian they should still kill him off. It would have the biggest impact on the show while if quagmire dies no one would care. This also proves that Brian is better. I'm not that ignorant Brian fan since yes Brian is one of the most annoying characters by far but still loved his character and I think he's done his role for the show and they should have him die and have it be either because of quagmire or because of Stewie both scenarios would work perfectly but Stewies having more impact on the show since Stewie would kill Brian and never go back to save him this would lead to his villain thing he had. If quagmire killed Brian in a fight it would be cool to see since peter would hate him and the rest of peters family would as well.
I found Quagmire's rant to be pretty much needed...I want to tell a friend of mine when he upset me three times at my birthday....and I couldn't. I wanted to say "Stop trying to dominate conversations! We weren't talking about THAT." and "You don't know anything about the kink/goth scene. You were never at a goth club or kink party. You want to learn about it, then come by!" And "No, you're wrong about (fill in the blank about comics, movies, and anime..)" I caught him lying about how he read a comic with Joker's true origin, with child abuse, wife abuse, and how he met Bruce Wayne when he was eight...THAT COMIC DOES NOT EXIST. He doesn't have to do that if he wants to be liked!
