    In this video we look at the entire evolution of Brian Griffin from Family Guy. Voiced by Seth MacFarlane, we look at Brian's entire life history, his past and future. Taking a look at the Family Guy cutaways, as well as the Family Guy full episodes, I've put Brian's life in chronological order. From season 1 to newest Family Guy season. In this video I talk about how Family Guy ruined Brian Griffin, and see how he has changed throughout Family Guy. I also talk about the episode The Life of Brian and why Brian was killed off.
    We also look at the funniest Family Guy moments from Peter, Lois, Chris, Meg and Brian. As well as other Family Guy characters from Quahog Rhode Island.

      After seeing what Brian has become, I honestly wish they had given Vinnie, the new Italian dog, more of a chance after Brian's death. Their reestablishing of the status quo by bringing back this new d-bag Brian was so insulting to Tony Sirico from The Sopranos, and was as bad as Principal and the Pauper.

    Ever since Brian died and came back to life again, he's become pretty unbearable. He was a great character in the first 4-5 seasons, but they keep having him chase after women every other episode it seems. Honestly, the best 'modern' Brian moments are when they have him do dog things, or when he acts/reacts like a dog would to something. Those are genuinely hilarious moments, and the last few seasons have really leaned into that more with him. For example, the episode when he thinks he's part cat is so funny, and a very recent episode had Lois throwing a ball to Brian in the park, but he kept getting more and more tired each time he came back with it. If they focus on the 'dog' aspects of Brian more, and less on the woman-of-the-week for him, then Brian can become a great character again.
    Also, I loved Vinny and would have loved it if they kept him instead of Brian. Would have opened up so many new stories, especially between him and Stewie. They shared a really sweet moment before Brian came back, and it would have been fun to see that play out.

    It really speaks volumes that the ONLY character to get any sort of depth over the years, especially recently, was Meg. While I'm proud of them for that, every character has been devolved into either a sociopath or punching bag that talks like someone's granny. With Brian, I get it. They did a massive overcorrection when viewers were getting sick of Brian's political views and the writers complied by taking him down a peg. Problem is, there's a difference between giving a character necessary flaws and making them a complete dick. I like the concept of Brian being slightly hypocritical and no longer being just a mouth piece, but I feel that did that MUCH better with Haley in American Dad, basically being as stubborn as her father on the other side of the spectrum (back when the show was political and not it's superior wacky final form). You want to root for him as the "no one gets me" type character, but they just went overboard with the whole thing.
    Anyway, has there ever been a "How Family Guy failed Joe Swanson" video yet? If anything, the WORST level of character derailment happened to him. The whole point of the character was that he was crippled, but still gung ho enough that it balanced out with one or two little "he's in a wheelchair" jokes thrown in. Now he's just this sad sack who's character is basically all about being crippled, a burden, and the friend they hang out with even though they don't like him.

    • @da_homunculus
      @da_homunculus Год назад +37

      One of the things I really appreciate about American Dad as opposed to Family Guy is that AD is willing to let every character, even the ones that are supposed to be stupid, be the voice of reason at times if it works for the plot. The AD cast feels like distinct characters while Family Guy's cast has been more or less interchangeable for the past decade.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm Год назад +23

      @@da_homunculus I feel the problem with Family Guy is that every few years the audience changes. It's no longer the hip, Gen-Xer pop culture show it started as (Brian even stating he's Gen X in last night's episode), first trying to get the Adult Swim audience when it first came back, and losing them as well when they grew up. So it went from Pop Culture bits with mild detached irony to comedic sociopathy with an emphasis on shock humor. Gradually just being a cast of either douchebags or punching bags. American Dad essentially happened because Seth was pissed Bush won re-election and it started out with a political bend, but over time the characters got more depth and they focused on character moments and wacky adventures. Steve especially went from insufferable nerd stereotype to someone you root for. Roger went from ALF parody to this weird, bizarrely sexual guy that loves to pretend to be other people. And somehow, even at way more seasons than I thought it would last, they manage to have made the show so weird and crazy, it's always fresh. FG is doing Naked Gun type schtick now for their best episodes.

      Honestly, I think that was kind of a mistake in making Stewie fill Brian's old niche. With Brian, at least before he had the life experience to know about all this stuff, and a kind of "outsider looking in" feel due to being a dog who is literally treated like a second-class citizen outside of his friend group and whatever women are willing to give him a chance. Meanwhile, Stewie is a literal baby. He might be a super-intelligent baby, but it's like the writers can't make up their mind if they want him to be so much smarter than the rest of the cast to highlight his intelligence, or focus on him being a baby who still doesn't know his state capitals and translates the news into "adult stuff" in his own mind and can be fooled by someone covering their face. It feels jarring at times because I just feel like saying "okay, how are YOU an expert or reliable source on any of this?"

    Honestly if they wanted to make Brian more of a jerk as a way to round him out in his voice of reason role, I felt it would've been fine had they actually treated him as a flawed individual and his intellect was treated as more insightful rather than pretentious. Say his flaws (big as they are) become a center piece for him, this would not only make Brian SO much better, but also more interesting. My issue outside of how far they took his unlikability, is the fact they tend to repeat the same beats with his character. Especially when it comes to his pursual of women, it's the same storylines over again. Or plots that emphasize how much of a terrible person he is, again, make him flawed and a tad preachy, but not to this pretentious degree. And even so, they could've done it far better. I still find Lois to be the worst character on the show, as she comes off as just a worst version of the Stewie evil baby gag from the first 3 seasons with how much she hates her family and wants them gone (which could've been interesting if she show explored that better than just making it a recurring joke with her), but done worse, but Lois is also much more spiteful and smug about her bad behavior. Brian is easily runner up as the worst followed by Peter. I know people always say Peter is the worst, but Lois and Brian are EASILY the worst characters! Which is a shame as the reasons you described for early Brian is why he was the most indearing character in earlier seasons. I like how his relationship with Pearl for instance in Brian Wallows, Peter Swallows he isn't taking advantage of Pearl as a chance to bang her, treat her like she's lower than him or isn't abusing some aspect of her for his own gain (like how he would take advantage of Jillian's stupidity or a blind woman's lack of sight etc) it was a genuine bond between two people! It's funny to me how that one off relationship had more character to it than any other Brian relationship, which would repeat the same joke or Brian being awful to basically every one of them. Which is especially notable in Stewie's case where the writers tend to make Stewie a mouthpiece for all of Brian's issue, which does nothing but serve how much better Stewie is by comparison. In fact I noticed in many Brian and Stewie focused episodes later, Stewie tends to be just like how Brian was in early seasons.
    While I don't watch Family Guy anymore your content makes perspectives on the show and characters interesting. Also American Dad is just better and it says something that a worst episode of American Dad is just standard quality for Family Guy. Francine for instance is much more likable than Lois, despite the characters not being good people either. Which by contrast older FG I found was better than older AD.

    Brian went from the voice of reason and caring person like Hayley to a self centered narcissist douchebag like everyone else in the world of Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show at some point. But as bad as Brian has become I feel like he still on some level cares about people. He tried getting close to Dylan and thought his ideas would make his son's show better, he got marijuana legal which did a lot of good for Quahog, and only did an anti marijuana ban because Stewie told him to and that led to Carter Pewterschmidt making money off of tobacco again. That's why Brian is still a better character/person than Peter or Quagmire, the latter who decided to run over Brian immediately after agree to a truce in one episode and the former who ignored Joe trying to tell him Meg was being arrested after s/a a burglar in one episode then said they were secret best friends before dumping lemonade on her less than 10 seconds later.

    I have a few different views.
    First, if you watch Family Guy later in season 18, you can clearly see that Brian is not as much of a jerk as he was from seasons 12-17.
    Second, Brian has still done significantly more positive things than negative things. Even in the worst of seasons 12-17, he still does. For example, the episode where he cheats Quagmire out of money, one episode before is about him helping Stewie, and the next is about him accompanying Peter to buy a turkey. So this is actually a rich and multi-faceted character. Not a "jerk" can be summed up.
    Third, as far as his negative deeds are concerned, they all end with him getting his comeuppance and apologizing. So this is more or less a "redeeming quality".
    Fourth, his story with Stewie is still interesting. Even though he was a jerk, his story with Stewie still appealed to me and made a strong impression on me.

    I think that a few points about Brian's death and comeback are overlooked.
    Brian was around in "Life Of Brian", until his tragic end
    Brian was gone in the next episode, "Into Harmony's Way"
    Brian came back in the next episode, "Christmas Guy"
    Life, death and resurrection. It's also an arc of three like how Jesus was dead for three days before coming back, according to the Bible. Furthermore, "Life Of Brian" has its episode name shared with a Monty Python movie where the story is that Brian is a guy who is mistaken for Jesus, hence the famous "He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!" line.
    I'm pointing out that the whole Brian's death fiasco is a pretentious Jesus metaphor because of this, if you wanted more evidence it was planned and basically meant to give the middle finger to the fans who actually cared about Brian.

  • @NerdMiGerd

    I think that giving the straightman faults over time isn't a bad idea inherently, and can lead into more interesting character dynamics for your show. Arrested Development is a fantastic example of that with how they first present Mike Bluth as the only sane member of the family, but over time see how his need to be seen by others as such only creates his own breed of arrogance, neuroticism, and egocentric behavior. It can add a great deal of depth to what would otherwise be a one-note punchline machine like Brian started off as. but the way they go about it is not only clunky as hell, but exacerbates Brian's worst qualities far too much for the sake of a quick gag. The faults they gave him in later seasons would work so much more if they balanced it with his older more admirable traits. By all means don't just make him an everyman but balance out his worse traits more instead of that being the sole thing that defines him.

    Brian has definitely became a much worse character. Although he may have been turned into a pretentious and hypocritical character, I think there is still some good in him. I appreciate how he is like a father figure to Stewie. Even though he may not always be a good influence, I can see in some more recent seasons that he really cares about Stewie (compared to some of his worst seasons related to his moral decline). Plus, he is there for him more than any other character in the show. I still like Brian, but I really hope the writers will reflect on what they’re doing to his character and bring some more of the old Brian back now in season 21.

    There's a theory that the reason that Seth MacFarlane wrote Peter, Brian, Stewie, and Quagmire, all as having unusual relationships with Lois, is because Seth is in love with Alex Borstein, and was using them to work out his feelings because she is married. The reason why these characters turned into insufferable pricks is because Seth gave up hope that he could ever be with Alex, so he turned his characters into assholes like he thinks he is.

    I just found out what they did. I last watched the show around 2002. I saw only the Star Wars Blue Harvest episode since then. I was kinda confused that it was a little darker than I remembered (I must have missed the second episode of season 2, as I was particularly confused by the grandfather character), but it wasn't a regular episode, so I forgot about it. Then I tried discussing the show with my dad, and he seemed confused by my opinions. Then a couple days ago I saw a review of the episode where Brian's son got Brian a job.
    My confusion mounted when I heard the review start out talking about how despicable Brian is, calling him the most evil character.
    I felt baffled, I thought he was the sweetest character. I remembered liking him a lot and even feeling strong emotions towards Brian episodes.
    Thankfully the reviewer made an offhand comment about how season 3 Brian was much nicer. So I found your review, confirming that I'm not crazy, Brian actually was genuinely kind and loveable.
    Why they thought character assassination was a good idea confounds me.
