I must apologise if I've offended any 8 string fans out there. Its not my thing & I don't enjoy listening to some forms of metal, but I do appreciate how incredibly gifted guys like Tosin Abasi are, and I would never disrespect the time & effort they put in to get that good! All music has its place (except euro pop!) and if you like it then don't let anyone tell you its not cool - especially not an old fart like me!

The trick is to do an almost percussive rhythm, like Metallica but on a bigger scale. You just have to learn how to switch between palm muting and notes really fast, then the rest I octaves and messing around with scales, bends and harmonics.

      @brownshit1 10 лет назад +62

If you don't like it, you don't like it. You shouldn't have to apologise, people are too soft.
To me it's just obscure jazz with heavy distortion.

It was hilarious to see your reaction, worked 9 years as a webdesigner for MaxGuitarStore in Holland, and I always was the one with my mad downtuned seven strings between all those blues fanatics on their GIbsons & Fenders and they all reacted far worse (like "it isnt music anymore"). Not need to be offended in any way it was clear you where still respectful towards this type of music. Its all in good fun.

The trick with an 8 string is to play like a 6 string but with two lower strings added on. Don't ride the 8 and 7 strings or you will be lost doing Djent forever. I find the sounds of eight strings are very repetitive because everyone seems to play djent on them, save Mr Abasi.
Also sorry to hear about the separation Rob and Lee, don't worry it will work itself out.

By the way, for the people asking why 8-strings & 7-strings exist, I can give you a few reasons as to why:
    -Meshuggah
    -Perihpery
    -Nevermore
-Steve Vai (yes he has one)
    -Feared/Six Feet Under
    -Animals as Leaders
Plus MANY more underrated and talented guitarists using lower frequency instruments.

The m80m is an amazing guitar, If I could only keep 1 guitar it would be the m80m. I find that the m80m design is well thought out, with the leg rest far forward and the bridge far back, both making the 29.4 inch scale comfortable to play sitting or standing and seem much shorter than it is. I love the forearm cut, the profile allows the hand to fall in just the right spot. It balances well. The bridge is great with the fine tuners and the locking nut.
The M80m's 29.4 inch scale cuts the Inharmonicity which is where the overtone frequencies of the note played are out of tune with the fundamental. Higher inharmonicity results in bass notes that have a muddy, buzzy, sound whose pitch is more difficult to discern. also For a low F#1, a 30 inch scale will have 32% better harmonic content and 15% more tension than 28 inch scale guitar.

I love the way an extended range instrument makes you rethink the way you play. In fact, I love it so much I play a long scale 7 string guitar tuned a full step down in my coverband, and we practically play everything! It takes real effort mastering every song that gets flung my way on a 'totally different' instrument. At first, the guitar was playing me. I can honestly say it'll make you a better guitarist in the long run.

I'm glad he actually played the 8 string, not necessarily the way it's supposed to be played, but some what of how people would think of how to play it. I see too many demos of guys trying to play extended range guitars and playing it like a six, and not utilizing the extra string in a different style. I feel like it doesn't show the guitars capabilities. But I digress, he did a great job.

maybe its the camera effecting the frame rate but that top string just looks like its flopping hardcore bad. what's the tension on that. what gauge is it running? im guesstimating that Rabea tuned it to Drop E1 and i just dont see that E string being fat enough. it looks like something between 75 and 85 but its hard to say at distance and the barritone-type scale should mean standard guitar tension would need something like a 100. hell, i had a 90 on a guitar in F# a while back to learn the song "nookie" by limp bizkit and a 90 F# felt sloppy. maybe im just overly picky on my tension or maybe im way off on the scale difference. also...anyone know a good brand/set of strings that are geared high tension on the lows and medium tension on the highs for drop tunings? bass string swapping and set splitting is expensive and it sucks.

a little novelty takes over when you first encounter that many strings. but after a while, it wears off and the rest of your repertoire / vocabulary translates over. the fun part is when you're forced to use different inversions to play certain tunes properly. at least, that's been my experience. that was a fun video to watch, thanks rob!!

If you are looking for a starter the Ibanez rg8 or s8 are fantastic, I've played them both and loved them plus they're not silly money.

Good God that's just straight up awesome seeing Rob play such a sexy guitar like that. I WILL WORK to buy one, I WILL OWN one... And I WILL POST a video of myself playing such a fine work of art.

Realtalk bro, don't waste your cash - just find a builder near you to make one, probably save you $4000.

FINALLY, some who knows how to set up an amp for 7/8 string guitars.
So many demos make the guitars sound muddy.

Ibanez actually has a 9-string production model, well maybe a limited edition. It was a the NAMM show. And I was told it should be available soon if not already now.

Yeah I don't do 7/8 strings as 6 is enough for me to keep track of, but the Captain losing it in this video makes it worth watching!

This may sound ignorant as I don't have much experience with locking nuts, but how did he drop the eighth string without loosening the lock?

I tune my Jackson with a locking nut all the time without taking it off. I don't know how it works but it does
