Did i just watch 8 mins of Some boomer laughing at 8strings.
Yes
First time I've actually laughed at a comment about boomers. So true!
I must apologise if I've offended any 8 string fans out there. Its not my thing & I don't enjoy listening to some forms of metal, but I do appreciate how incredibly gifted guys like Tosin Abasi are, and I would never disrespect the time & effort they put in to get that good! All music has its place (except euro pop!) and if you like it then don't let anyone tell you its not cool - especially not an old fart like me!
The trick is to do an almost percussive rhythm, like Metallica but on a bigger scale. You just have to learn how to switch between palm muting and notes really fast, then the rest I octaves and messing around with scales, bends and harmonics.
If you don't like it, you don't like it. You shouldn't have to apologise, people are too soft.
To me it's just obscure jazz with heavy distortion.
It was hilarious to see your reaction, worked 9 years as a webdesigner for MaxGuitarStore in Holland, and I always was the one with my mad downtuned seven strings between all those blues fanatics on their GIbsons & Fenders and they all reacted far worse (like "it isnt music anymore"). Not need to be offended in any way it was clear you where still respectful towards this type of music. Its all in good fun.
GeebusCripes
You summed it up perfectly: "obscure jazz with heavy distortion". That's what makes it awesome.
I have a quetion. Lol. How tall are you Captain. I thought this guitar was simply too big to play on especially since I'm short. But looking at the video the guitar seemed a normal size when you played it.
"never played an 8 string before" first note: F#
***** Yeah I know, I now have a 8 string too :)
***** I have listened to bands with 12 strings before meshuggah even existed
***** Well yes I was joking, Messhugah is older than me^^ ..but look up Warr Guitars.. those I had in mind
***** btw this guitars 8th strinng in particular is a 1D#
SPYDDET a lot of 8 strings come preset to F,A#,D#,G#,C#,F#,A#,D# tuning.
All anyone needs to figure out an extended range guitar is time alone and confidence.
I agree... Hello again btw
+Hank Hill I just picked one up and played the 12 bar blues. Literally the first thing I've ever played on a 7 string. Then I just djented.
And propane
+Hank Hill i tell ya whhut
Bobby, you're grounded!
the tone is really good haha. Rebea is such a natural too. "never played an 8 string" goes a head and plays like hes practiced all his life.
Rob actually played it very well love it!
Thanks dude ;-)
Rob Chapman hey rob how is the tension on the higher register?
PolarBimbi very tight the scale length is 29.4
I agree. Rob started to warm up to it when he realized that you need a light touch on an instrument like that
The trick with an 8 string is to play like a 6 string but with two lower strings added on. Don't ride the 8 and 7 strings or you will be lost doing Djent forever. I find the sounds of eight strings are very repetitive because everyone seems to play djent on them, save Mr Abasi.
Also sorry to hear about the separation Rob and Lee, don't worry it will work itself out.
How far we've come in 5 years lmao
Absolutely beautiful..
By the way, for the people asking why 8-strings & 7-strings exist, I can give you a few reasons as to why:
-Meshuggah
-Perihpery
-Nevermore
-Steve Vai (yes he has one)
-Feared/Six Feet Under
-Animals as Leaders
Plus MANY more underrated and talented guitarists using lower frequency instruments.
BEYOND CREATION . Check it
Exactly the list goes on and on, John Petrucci is another one worth noting write's a large amount of his stuff on a 7. They add so much to an already amazing instrument, although anything past 8 seems a little silly lol
Fear Factory & Divine Heresy as well.
Haken! For a more Proggy style.
Conquering Dystopia
Rabea is a beast. He's sooo good!
'Bea is a goddamn beast, instantly pulling killer riffs out of his arse (as you say over there), and Cap'n Lee is such a fucking old man. Give him his Ensure and send him to bed.
Ryan Miller lmao
Rabea, you rock and that's all there is to it! Like a beast.
I love how just playing anything on it sounds instantly like meshugga.
Vildhjarta is the proprietor of the "strangling chicken" noise
But oh, so TH411
The m80m is an amazing guitar, If I could only keep 1 guitar it would be the m80m. I find that the m80m design is well thought out, with the leg rest far forward and the bridge far back, both making the 29.4 inch scale comfortable to play sitting or standing and seem much shorter than it is. I love the forearm cut, the profile allows the hand to fall in just the right spot. It balances well. The bridge is great with the fine tuners and the locking nut.
The M80m's 29.4 inch scale cuts the Inharmonicity which is where the overtone frequencies of the note played are out of tune with the fundamental. Higher inharmonicity results in bass notes that have a muddy, buzzy, sound whose pitch is more difficult to discern. also For a low F#1, a 30 inch scale will have 32% better harmonic content and 15% more tension than 28 inch scale guitar.
I've recently purchased an 8-string guitar and am absolutely loving it, the extra range really adds an unbelievably fun aspect to the guitar and I can't see myself going back to 6 any time soon.
I fell in love with the sound of 8 string guitars just a few weeks ago and now I'm planning to get one as soon as I can.
Thanx for the demo, really great guitar deserve that
Awesome video! Surely did make me chuckle.
Daaaah jent . I don't think I've ever laughed so much in a gear demo before :p
Hey buddy do you mean me or chappers :p
Thanks dude that means a lot
***** because of this comment, found your channel and subscribed. Good job.
Robert Baker because of this comment, found your channel and subscribed. Good job.
Thanks guys
I actually really enjoyed the tonez in this video.
Those extended chords just sound huge.
I play 8 string and I'm a jazz guitarist. The M80M has a 29.5" scale and really interests me. Will be buying.
I love the way an extended range instrument makes you rethink the way you play. In fact, I love it so much I play a long scale 7 string guitar tuned a full step down in my coverband, and we practically play everything! It takes real effort mastering every song that gets flung my way on a 'totally different' instrument. At first, the guitar was playing me. I can honestly say it'll make you a better guitarist in the long run.
Bea with the grooves in the middle there, holy crap!
That was awesome xD i love 8-strings, Bea actually played it awesome despite it being his first time xD!
loved some of the stuff he was doing with it.
Sweet vids
Kept seeing that Dual Dark in the background. Can't wait for that demo.
It bothers me so much that Meshuggah is spelled wrong in the description
Haha, I've not laughed so hard in ages! This video was great fun to watch! :)
where can i get "8 string never before"?
The Chicken part had me crying with laughter when I watched it back after Capt Lee mentioned it lmfao!
Fun to watch because rob gets so many guitars in his hands so the foreign factor of it would be less of an issue. He did remarkably well.
from New Zealand love your chanel totally relate to you guys. chilled and having fun always a good time:)
would love to hear this on a Mark v
Im from New Zealand too!
same
great playing man
I shed a manly tear of happiness when i heard some dj0nt on this channel
The reason i watch every review is because : you play a lot & the "blahblahablah" part are NEVER boring, always something funny to say.
That's what i want to see : fun & guitar !
those dorje riffs sounded great on the 8 string. you guys should really think about doing a song with this.
OMG for the first time I have been on time to see Mr. Chappers upload a video ^_^ YAY T_T /,,/ I approve this review/demo!
Detuning the guitar, when halters are locked? Can you explain this to me?
How come that your Ibanez reviews are usualy half-assed, short and not very serious but you make time and effort to show off the Gibson range in about 7 videos? Seems quite biased...
Love this video, funny and interesting at the same. Thanks guys! Do you recommend specific amps or is it possible to play it on a Marshall 40W?
Sounds damn good.
Rob, this time in your blossoming career is probably an amazing time to remind the world of this unique version of Catalyst...
On an Eight String...
Now I want one! :)
It's actually both guitarists' sig, kinda like the K-7.
Nowadays both Korn guys have their own sig's but true they used to have the same sig. And also true that it's both Meshuggah guys' sig not just Mårten's.
Well bass player. You're fired.
I'm glad he actually played the 8 string, not necessarily the way it's supposed to be played, but some what of how people would think of how to play it. I see too many demos of guys trying to play extended range guitars and playing it like a six, and not utilizing the extra string in a different style. I feel like it doesn't show the guitars capabilities. But I digress, he did a great job.
that dorje riff is someting unbelievable great
Just realised that the first tune Bea plays when drop tuning the guitar is Aeromancy, it sounds pretty cool on the 8 string
Dibs on the new band name; Shemuggah
I just can't take my eyes off that blue Les Paul in the background!
Come on Rob, you know you loved that beast.
This guitar sounds nice... I would love to have it!
Hey guys I have a question whats the point of the floyd rose style system without the trem aspect of it?
4:34 You can actually change tuning with the FX Edge III-8? I thought it was a locking design.
This M80M is a monster!
That Low F# tone though \m/
Lee Djenterton
what is the red hollowbody chilling on the wall at the back?
Meshuggah has an "h" on the end.
Also has an M at the front, and a eshugga in the middle.
If anybody was wondering.
Still not fixed after four years. 😥
8 String Aeromancy! XD That was bonkers
This is probably the funniest video you guys have done so far XD
Does anyone know if they are using the factory strings or if they aren't, what gauges are they? Thanks
Does anyone know what cabinet they're using? Thanks for your help
Mr Chapman glad to see you didn't bail out ;) You should totally play Meshuggah - Bleed like back in the old day with Banditone comming out of your cupboards...Oh sh*t did Chappers ever know?!?!?! O_O !!!!!!!
Is it ok to use walnut oil on a rosewood fretboard?
Can't wait till there is a 15 string guitar
they make 17+ string guitars, but most of them are custom-made so it may be a bit hard to get your hands on
beautiful instrument, never even played a 7 stringer but i'd love to give that a try
That’s a pretty cool harp
Why not do bass guitar reviews...?
The Meshuggah signature series is a signature series for both guitarists of Meshuggah, the other one being Fredrik Thordendal.
Just also thought I'd say that the curly-haired dude (Ravier?) could've lied and say he had experience with an 8 string and still would've impressed me. Awesome guitar tone as well.
Not Ravier but Rabea ;)
***** Robert ? XD Nice one ^^
Why not add one string that is higher instead of lower? I love the hard tail bridge with the locking nut.
I am Byte MUSIC and approve this beautiful chug-machine!
Can someone help me, im planning on buying this guitar, the Ibanez M80M, was wondering what kind of strings im supposed to use when i change them. For an 8 string.
Edit: And if possible could you name a few great brands for strings, thanks.
which les paul is in the back there? that locks stunning
what camcorder you are used in video?
Cant tell how many times I've watched this video.
maybe its the camera effecting the frame rate but that top string just looks like its flopping hardcore bad. what's the tension on that. what gauge is it running? im guesstimating that Rabea tuned it to Drop E1 and i just dont see that E string being fat enough. it looks like something between 75 and 85 but its hard to say at distance and the barritone-type scale should mean standard guitar tension would need something like a 100. hell, i had a 90 on a guitar in F# a while back to learn the song "nookie" by limp bizkit and a 90 F# felt sloppy. maybe im just overly picky on my tension or maybe im way off on the scale difference. also...anyone know a good brand/set of strings that are geared high tension on the lows and medium tension on the highs for drop tunings? bass string swapping and set splitting is expensive and it sucks.
6 strings is enough, thank you very much
a little novelty takes over when you first encounter that many strings. but after a while, it wears off and the rest of your repertoire / vocabulary translates over. the fun part is when you're forced to use different inversions to play certain tunes properly. at least, that's been my experience. that was a fun video to watch, thanks rob!!
Do u have to learn special chords to play an 8 string?
How long will Aziz be there ?
that is badass
Bea should play 8’s more often. Sounded sick!
So if I got this right, people buy 8 string guitars to play only on the 8th string, correct?
I actually want to get an 8 string soon. Love it's capabilities
Get this one . Best 8 youll ever get :)
If you are looking for a starter the Ibanez rg8 or s8 are fantastic, I've played them both and loved them plus they're not silly money.
be sure you have a good cab though!
Just get a bass
***** , I've got a bass my friend. It has good low end.. but I feel a guitar has better high end ;) An 8 string has both
Hi guys ! does anyone know the song Bea is playing at 5:15 ?
Thanks !
Good God that's just straight up awesome seeing Rob play such a sexy guitar like that. I WILL WORK to buy one, I WILL OWN one... And I WILL POST a video of myself playing such a fine work of art.
Cheers mate ;-)
Realtalk bro, don't waste your cash - just find a builder near you to make one, probably save you $4000.
SuperJBrowne Challenge accepted!
SuperJBrowne Dude that model is actually only 1499 USD
Levi McElrath
Really??? The one's at my local music store are selling at $8999 (New Zealand dollars) which is about $5500-$6000 USD. Maybe I should hit up Ebay.
Bea is a great modern proggy metal player
That flower of life outro
I own a m8m and it is awesome
FINALLY, some who knows how to set up an amp for 7/8 string guitars.
So many demos make the guitars sound muddy.
Hey, rob
whats the intro song for your videos, ive been trying to figure it out but i cant think of it
Not rob but the song is Redtower - Afterall.
actually lee did an alright job with that thing!
"Laugh it up fuzz ball...". Love you guys, stop dissin' 8 strings
Ibanez actually has a 9-string production model, well maybe a limited edition. It was a the NAMM show. And I was told it should be available soon if not already now.
Yeah I don't do 7/8 strings as 6 is enough for me to keep track of, but the Captain losing it in this video makes it worth watching!
You obviously don't djent.
This may sound ignorant as I don't have much experience with locking nuts, but how did he drop the eighth string without loosening the lock?
I tune my Jackson with a locking nut all the time without taking it off. I don't know how it works but it does
What is the song at the end called?!
Will this be a good begginers guitar?
Would it be possible if I could mod int my self but since I don’t know shit about guitars take it to a shop and have it modded to put a whammy bar on it?
