Could you check out the Harley Benton R-458MN WH Fanfret? It's only 166 dollars in US. I've been considering getting it but I wanted a genuine review of it from a reliable source before I get it.
Do you think this is better than the Ibanez?
Misheard "lyric":
"This guitar retails for only $325 you ass!" :D
As someone who just wants an 8 string to mess around with, I think this will be a great addition to my rig. I can fix Any other issues short of neck breakage… which I can fix that too, but it’s annoying af😂😂😂
I had to fix a neck breakage at the headstock on a rare SG. 😭
For the price and even cost of upgrading it’s definitely the cheapest out there. I had one of the older models before they switched to soapbar pickups and different wood for the fretboard and I loved it
Harley Benton do actually do a even cheaper 8 string called the R-458BK, it’s like less than £200 iirc. I’d be interested to see a review of it.
I have the white variant and the black one fanfret. I must say, I enjoy the multi-scale much more than the "standard" one.
You can buy an 8 string for about 150.
Trust me, you don't want to see that. It's not good, this one is several times better and that's why HB and Thomann are focusing on it.
As an idea, you could also do a simple tutorial of upgrading pick ups and all of that since i've never done that and my first guitar is an 8 string but its still cool to learn to apply to smaller guitars.
I would but I don’t really know how to do all that stuff. I take it in to my friend to do tech work
@@BaenaCarcosa Ooo okay
Pickup swaps are not done lightly. You need wiring diagrams, and then need to know exactly where you disconnected each pre-existing wire that leads to volume pots, switches and input jax. Then you need to properly line them up, and solder. Soldering is a whole other art form and it's tough. I've done soldering minimally for years and I still suck at it.
It's not as easy as you'd think. Mis-connected or poorly soldered wiring can royally mess stuff up and be a huge headache.
@@FEBRIZIOtv What simple things could be done. Because I'm actually fascinated and I feel like I could talk to you all day
Unscrew pickup. Unsolder pickup from everything. Pull out pickup. Insert new pickup and follow wiring diagram. Solder to pots again and ground. Adjust pickup height.
Nice chunky sound. I've heard a lot about the frets being smooth, and with the low cost, that's a huge plus!
Appreciate your honesty as always! Been looking for an 8 string to mess around with but want to still main my 6/7. Can’t wait to see you mod the guitar and see how great you can make it!
I've been playing this guitar as my one-and-only instrument since July. I play clean tones and lead rather than riffs/chugs. Can confirm that it produces a sound I'm really happy with on all 8 string.
I have a couple of videos on my channel if you want to hear samples. I tune F#1 - B1 - E2 - A2 - D3 - G3 - C4 - F4 (P4 tuning)
I should say that I have a SLIGHTLY different model, with 4 tuners each side of headstock, and white finish. But apart from that I can't see any difference
I definitely want to start learning to tinker with guitars, so i was thinknig about buying this just to experience upgrading, and maybe some of the cheaper versions to practice painting
I would love to see and hear what this feels like upgraded, and id love to watch a series of you covering how to!
Those pick ups actually didn't sound to bad, but the gojira plug in makes damn near anything sound good IMO. I feel like HBs are good for people starting off or want something to do crazy mods on, I own 2 6 string HBs (TE 40 and an EX) and haven't decided on what I want to do with them
I got an agile 8 string last year, had to move the bridge back a quarter inch for the low strings to intonate properly, refinished it and it's not terrible, but the 28.6" scale length is brutal to chord on.
I just got the Harley Benton R-458MN fan fret a couple weeks ago for $166. That with a hardshell Gator case and shipping from Germany to Minnesota was $310 total and it arrived in three business days. I'm actually shocked by how good the quality is and how well it plays! I was fully expecting to have to adjust the truss rod, file some frets, etc. But nope! It's absolutely bangin' right outta the box. My only gripe is that they ship it with too light of strings. So I ordered some thicker strings and Hipshot locking tuners, so now the tuning stability will be much better. The passive pickups are subpar, to be expected, but I have a Horizon Devices Precision Drive into a Boss Katana MKII 50 and it sounds great! This got me back into messing around with recording, and it sounds tasty with the Neural DSP Nolly pack. I'm gonna upgrade the pickups eventually but I'm not in a rush. Overall I'm very pleased with it.
was looking to get that exact guitar myself, glad to hear it's not too shabby
@@HardTimesStudios It's really good! As long as quality control does their job, then you'll get a great guitar.
Clever of you to throw the vermin chorus in. That section still gives me the chills
when he flipped it and it was neck through i was so shook! and he didn't even mention it!
It's gorgeous
looks awesome, definitely might get it for starting out 8 string guitar.
great review! the new colorshift model theyre releasing is actually tempting...
I really hope Thomann brings back left handed version of this guitar, i missed my opportunity when they were available and i regret it to this day
I love this guitars i have 11 eight string guitars and i change the pick ups enlarge the nuts to fit 15 to 105 gauge strings file the neck and sometimes put a killswitch on this completly changes the guitar greatvid again as usually
0:15 there is a guitar that costs about half as much as this green guitar, its called the Harley Benton R-458BK and its $160 usd. would be cool to se you make a video on that one tbh
Just a heads up, the tuning stability issue could very well be a problem with the nut. I have another model of a Harley Benton 8 string fanfret and I slapped HB's own locking tuners on it. It didn't fix the tuning stability until I went to a luthier for a nut replacement (the stock one was awful, honestly). Since then it's been rock-effing-solid, apart from the normal neck shifting due to temperature and humidity fluctuations. I sometimes go days on end without having to re-tune the thing.
Wow. Came here to see the guitar, didn’t expect to subscribe and like a new band🤯
beautiful Guitar, Next year I hope it would be available in my region. I want to try that guitar
Solid review man
I own this guitar. I used it for my debut song Re-Animator. I love it. 🤘
Yea man thanks for reviewing that guitar we needed that… *totally why I subscribed*
Yeah dude right like how dare a guitar channel do a guitar review
Cool track and video. Thanks!
Just got this in yesterday and haven't put it down since. Couldn't. Be happier cheap plays comfortably can't really see that line on mine unless you hold it up to light at the right angle and love the neck thru feel. Def gonna swap the pickups but that's my only 'complaint'.
I love the way you explain it
I got the white variant that is half the price. For the use I'll give it? great instrument! thanks to your BFG Division cover video I've had plenty of fun with the 8 string.
Ordered gonna be my first 8 string been playing a 7 for almost 10 years and really don't feel like downtuning it retuning and for the price can't beat that also like my favourite colour lol
I will probably be getting this when I get an 8. I'm not expecting to want an 8 other than just to have one though.
I would love if they did a multi scale 8 amarok spec’d guitar, SS frets, hip shot etc. also careful of your radioactive green guitar behind you, its glowing in an out the video LOL
also, awesome video Andrew I’m planning on getting a HB and will use your link!😊
I’d love to work with them on one just like that. Hoping to convince them in the future
Cheapest and most effective is replacing the nut. The foam behind always helps, too.
Hey Andrew, you mentioned multiple times now that you don’t know music theory at all yet your playing is on point and you seem to be always in key and you’re creating good music. How does your creative process looks like? Do you just noodle around till everything kinda fits?
I’m not Andrew but I’d like to offer some feedback :)
I know music theory very well when it comes to classical instruments. Guitar lies outside of my realm of knowledge. I know scales, keys, and modes and whatnot, but nothing crazy like Rick Beato.
My go to method is to know what I want the riff to sound like. That and noodling is a lot of the creative process for me.
Also knowing how to play your favorite songs can help translate into your own stuff. If you already know what notes go with certain chord patterns in a song, you can mess around with those frets and notes until you get something you like.
That’s my process, and it works for me. But you have to find your own methods.
Can't speak for him either, but I have a completely different take to the other guy, so I'm going to give my two cents.
I personally don't do it this way, but I'm a producer and I work with a lot of musicians. Ever since the early days of hardcore, stealing is a big thing. Taking riffs you like, playing them like you want in the order you like is literally the process of 80% of guitarists in any core genre.
Analyze what dope songs by bands you like actually do. There's a reason why they resonate like they do and it's something to use as a tool! For example, Loathe have a fantastic way of writing choruses to deathcore stuff that includes some really clever voicing and rootnote stuff. Learning that and adding that to your heavy/lighter parts allows you to do big sounding choruses. Don't be afraid to straight up steal. We're supposed to be fans of music.
I was considering this one when I was looking into getting myself an 8-string. After hearing what it sounds like here, well, I'll be honest, I'm kinda glad I saved a bit and went out of my way to look for other options. I'll give you that the cleans do sound pretty good, but that's not usually the reason you'd buy an 8-string, and none of the rest of those tones work the way I'd want them to... I guess those pickups just really aren't to my taste.
I like the sounds of the mystery instrument I ended up with a whole lot better. :)
Do you have any advice for understanding the fretboard from a deathcore/metal perspective? I don’t understand where to start with theory and how it applies to deathcore (genre of music i want to play). Useful chords/scales?
The first affordable 8 string that I owned was the RGA-8. I'm really sure that it had bass pickups in it. It even had a toggle switch that made it sound even less good when using it as a guitar...
Yep haha. Great guitar terrible pickups
I’ve been using Harley Benton guitars live for 3 years. Never disappoints. I play slamming death metal btw :)
Really curious on what pickups you'll use... I have one of these guitars (the 2020 version) and if they didn't change specs (which seems to me they didn't), those are 9-string pickups. This greatly narrows down choice. Alternatively, I guess you could use 8-string pickups, but there will be a lot empty space on those pickup cavities. 😅 Hopping the next video comes soon. Cheers!
rg8 or this one, in your opinion would buy over the other? pickups better in the HB? thanks man im looking to buy one of the two
I bought an artist indominous 8 string here in australia a few years back for 249 australian dollers was awsome for the price
It looks very nice!
This is the second channel I've seen covering this brand, I'm thinking about getting one of the flying Vs or an explorer since I just want the style. I don't really care about brand, I have my mim Strat and an Epiphone custom shop SG and I don't think I need anything more expensive than those
I don’t know anything about you but I’m gonna go ahead try to convince you not to get a Flying V. They’re just all around terrible and a gimmick that exists purely for aesthetic that really isn’t that good looking. Cheers.
Very nice guitar sounds great
Sup Andrew.
Is it better to get this or a diy baritone from precision guitars? I play drop e like humanity’s last breath/ black tongue!?
Most of the time, in hard tail guitars, tuning stability issues are related to the nut.
are the pickups active or passive? you've never said that in the video
thats honestly my make or break or for this guitar
Any cheaper brand guitar will need some upgrades. Have seen people take cheap pos guitar's and make them awesome. Don't think it will be much different. Some 808's,maybe upgrade the tuners or bridge. Gonna get one as soon as possible.
My new Ibanez had sharp fret ends. Boy i was Sick!
Do they have any other color Choices. Seems like a great value
Yo, im recently back into guitar and only have an old ibanez s prestige still so I'm used to super thin neck, anyway I'm wanting a 7 sting pretty bad and drooling over the schecter Mach 7 frs but that would be a big purchase for me not knowing if I'll keep at it, so considering trying the Amarok 7 but really unsure about how the neck feels and plays, bro, could you or anyone suggest a 7 string on the budget side with a really comfy thin neck that I'll actuslly want to play a lot? Something playable and not niche or learning curved like a baritone or multinscale. Or suggestions about the Mach 7 frs? Is that even an good goal? I'm feeling overwhelmed and could use some guidance! Thanks
Ibanez rg series
Right now Reverb has 3-4 listings brand new for an 8 string called Hadean ELS going for $210. Can't even find a website for the brand itself.
This guitar looks amazing! How comfortable it is to play? Also, looking forward the upgrade video.
i bought one of Harley Bentons 8 string guitars. imo, they’re better than all 8 strings i’ve tried under $500
I would love to get me one, but HB don’t do lefty at the moment 😭
love this
Very spooky season song. I love it
We all know these are gonna be highly desirable a few yrs from now and worth more.
Makes me think of my favorite Ubby in the whole world ❤️
For the price it's really great tbh!
I made an oooo weee sound when I saw your IA shirt lmao
I got a Harley Benton EX-JH Modern (cause james hetfield fanboy lmao) and it's been lovely to play right away. the thing feels like a much more expensive guitar
Massive sound impressive for the price 😲
how's the neckdive?
Can you review the Cort KX508MS PLZ???
Do they make left handed models?
Nice!!!
im about to buy this guitar. ithink its good
Cosmetically I don't mind some finishing blemishes. But would you say electronically this guitar would turn you away from investing in a more quality valued 8 string just because some of the quirky sounds or overtones it produces due to the electronics aren't as good as a higher end 8 string?
I bought the charcoal version. I love it. Only complaints I had was needing to stuff some foam in a few plays yo help with buzz and ring out. All those guys saying harley benton is crap are probably just jealous they spent 1000s more for a guitar close to the same quality.
Im the same way. I dont buy super cheap gear but i think its a waste to spend 5k on a guitar. 1.5k will get you the same guitar if not better just gotta look lol
No, not even close to same quality in any way, or playability of any guitar costing thousands more. Hope you're joking. You get what you pay for unless it's like a Gibson or fender which you def pay much more for the name. Not saying these are total junk but keep in mind they're cheap for a reason, cheap materials, electronics can always make a guitar better but you can't change out wood, if you're a beginner,go for it,will be a decent beginner guitar, otherwise you'll get what you pay for and wish you spent more on a keeper for life
There is another one called subzero, 25.5\28 inch neck, alder body, maple walnut neck.
I need it.
There’s a lot of good positives for this guitar, especially for a starter guitar
it is not a starter guitar at all. It is a solid masterpiece
they have a sub 200 version as well
damn for the price thats a steal
This guitar is hammer! If you want, you can replace the Pickups and good!
Are those pickups the same size as EMG 808s or 909s?
Looks like they are 9 string sized
I got this a couple years ago. It's pretty comfortable to play, though I am looking at replacing the pickups with a set of Lundgrens, tuners could probably also do with an upgrade. The biggest problem I have is that the screw on the 8th string saddle is too long if you want to pull it back enough for better intonation up high. Changed it for a shorter one, but it's still not as great, cause the string hole then gets in the way :D Overall it's still a decent guitar. Very difficult to find one with a neck-through that's decently priced and has soap bar pickups instead of the offset ones.
What do you think of adding FIshmans to this? I think it's going to be a mod worth doing.
Hell yeah bro
Man. I really enjoy your videos. I’ve been using your quad cortex upload as my main tone for a minute now
But my guy…that snare drum needs some workkkkkk
Lol it’s a constant battle
@@BaenaCarcosa that is real life. Haha
The cheapest guitar on the market is the Harley Benton R-458 BK Progressiv Series, Would also like to see a review from you :)
He's right on the pricing, it is among the Lowest priced fanned fret 8 string guitars, with those features it is the lowest.
The HB R-458 is cheaper, this one QEB? is kinda like the next level up, I have the R458 but wanted to try this model. What is nuts about it is it a neck through guitar for that price!
waiting for a mods for this beauty))
2:07 very tony danza
Cheap but awesome sounding guitar!
I think I'm officially an old man now. I do not dig the tritone chords on the lowest two strings. I knew I was an old man when I heard myself say, "That's just noise for a guitar part." I love the rhythm bits on the seventh string, though. lol
2:48 acacia strain cold gloom type beat
HB actually make a multi scale 8 string that costs about £155, I have the one in white
Same, this one has a bit more features and neck thru
What is this dark sorcery, Andrew’s touching the g string!
Harley Benton makes great guitars for a low budget. Not sure about 8 string guitars but most of their 6 string "general purpose" guitars could be much better than basic Ibanez RG for the same price
I’d say for $325 I’m absolutely ok with replacing the pickups and tuners. Also a fret wrap 100%
The only bad thing I see from this video is that the pickups sound VERY muddy and I hate it but yea
I have the cheaper all white 8 string and I absolutely hate how it feels to play
My question is, are the necks on their fan frets as fat as the Amarok necks? I bought my Amarok, and the neck was so surprisingly fat. None of the YT reviewers I see on any Harley Benton talk about the neck profile. And tbh I think I may have gotten a bad Amarok altogether, the pickups say EMG but don’t sound like em, it’s kinda noisy, the locking tuners were HB brand and not WSC like the specs online said, and everything in me tells me the pots aren’t the right ones for the pickups cause they don’t effect the pickups really at all, the tone doesn’t really effect the sound at all.
I thought they put EMG's in that guitar?
I wonder if 9 string is their next heh.
I wanted one from them a while ago. I contacted them and they said no interest or plans yet
Mine cut my finger on sharp fret edges, had glue on the neck and fretboard and crackling electronics 😂😂😂 it went back and I will never go near HB again
I've play a Harley Benton 8 and their nice.
But i'd pay 100 bucks more and get a Shecter 8. They are great other than the tuners..but well worth it.
Soup sound😮
