I grew a nice big patch of nasturtium this year! My husband had Covid and had lingering symptoms. I just discovered the health benefits of this plant and I’ll be giving him leaves to see if we can get it cleared up!!
Hi from across the pond Heidi! I've only recently started my herbalism journey and I'm 59 🤣 I'm just so blessed to have found your channel, thank you so much for all the incredible info you provide for novices like me. Growing up in South Africa, my grandparents had a small farm and grew their own vegetables and fruit. They also had a couple of dairy cows, some chickens and a couple of pigs. As kids we were so healthy eating fresh, whole foods and benefiting from the herbs and flowers my grandma grew. As kids she used to make us roast beef sandwiches with Nasturtium leaves and I loved the flavour. I've been growing Nasturtiums in the UK for a while but I wasn't really aware of all the benefits so today I made up a batch of chopped Nasturtium leaves with wild honey for an antibiotic syrup for winter, fingers crossed it works 😁 Thank you again and God blessxx
My kids eat nasturium flowers all the time. We have had no problems there! The kids are out in our garden constantly picking and eating everything! Lol I have a garden tour coming up in a video soon. Now you have me looking forward to trying a tincture with them!
@@sunnycharacter I can send you some next year, they grow amazing here in Maine. I'm about the do a short video on how large and prolific they were this year to document their beauty.
@@FoundationForFamilyFreedom Awe, that’s sweet of you! Thanks! This was an unusually fierce summer here in Central Texas. I mean, it gets hot, but we were under that heat some again like last year, but even worse, and no rain. I’m shocked it didn’t kill my Plumeria, bananas and cannas. From mid July on, my water bill is 🫣
GREAT information. I've never had luck growing nasturtiums, but this year they all came up, but I have enormous leaves and no flowers and now I know why. Thank you so much and God Bless.

They need to be much further. Plus my first year growing them, didn’t realise how huge some of them can get…love them. Love all your videos, you’re an absolute minefield of knowledge, amazing, thanks for sharing.
Hi Heidi, Thank you so much for all this info!! I used to grow nasturtiums just because they were pretty!! And yes, for the flowers in salads. But now I have learned so much more from your and will start growing them again!! Thanks again for all the info!! Love, Mary ❤️😘❤️
This is one flower I don't have in my herb and flower garden... yet. Definitely going to be in the look out for some to add next spring. I'm always looking for new flowers (with mutli-purpose uses) to add some vibrant color to my herb garden.
So glad I found your channel 👏 I'm off to pick the leaves now in my garden to eat, got a head cold so this is bang on time for me. Love that there is a use for the leaves as I love the flowers in salad. 👍🇮🇪

I just planted a row of these seven day ago and some were coming up after five days and I planted them for the reason that you talked about but I didn't even know that you had this video, I didn't even know if you knew about this plant. I also planted them because the area where I planted them is not really great soil and I heard that these grow better in not so good soil. I enjoyed the video even if it is older the information is always new.
FINALLY!!! I have some!!! Mine just started to bloom but I planted them in a new bed so the soil was excellent! Explains why now towards end of season when all the other plants have been using the soil nutrients I have now started to see blooms. Had a ton of leaves till now though. Also my borage FINALLY bloomed. Again in same bed too. Still no marshmallow nor feverfew. :( I’m gonna add some to a different place next year. It’s looking like I’ll still be here. I’m sure it was the location. The bed was just so new and only 6-7 hours sun. The “home front” has been doing sooooooooooooooo much better and it’s starting to feel like days of old. I know you understand this and I’ll talk to you more later. Just feeling blessed! Praying everything stays on track!!! I didn’t and won’t do anything with my nasturtiums this year. I wanna let them develop but next year I’ll definitely be using the leaves and flowers. Thanks for all you do! Love, hugs and blessings ~The Kid! ❤️
I also make a vinegar with the flowers, often combining them with marshmallow flowers, rose petals, and/or rosemary. This is specifically for use as a hair wash though.
Great information! I have a big planter of Nasturtiums and now will get to harvesting the leaves. I use the flowers in salads but never dried any of the plant before, also have to try the green seeds!! Absolutely love your channel and appreciate your help from gardening to sewing!! Your very much like my herb teacher I shared your channel with her.
Thanks Heidi, that was such a great, informative video. I had no clue about all of this. I knew they were edible but now I know more! I have a hanging pot of nasturtiums just for their pretty colours. I'm going to think more about these lovely flowers for when I plant my medicinal garden in the future! Thanks so much!
I have a huge pot of nasturtium. I thought they were supposed to be annuals, but mine never died back, just kept going! I trimmed it back in ignorance, but it just seems to be sending out tons of new shoots and growth from the stems I cut back.... Maybe it's because we didn't have a heavy freeze this winter, but I'm a little confused 😆
Great video, Heidi! My nasturtiums just started blooming about 2 weeks ago and I started them from seed from rareseeds. I have never grown them before. It was actually recommended as a companion plant for corn, cucumbers, and beans. So I have them right in with all of that and everything is doing amazingly well. Our temps are now in the upper 80s and they are going strong. I came to see if I could find any info about them and your video popped up right behind another one I was watching without my even looking to see if you had one. So your video must be pretty high up in the nasturtium line up on RUclips. Mine are only red but they are so beautiful! I love that they will come back without trying. I can't wait to taste them! :D
It has been so cold here the last couple of weeks and does not show signs of warming up until mid June. My nasturtiums have come to a stop and won't start growing again until it warms up. UGH! Same with many of my other plants. At least I still have other plants doing good despite the cold but I do not know if my corn will ever germinate now.
I knew they were edible but I never knew they were so beneficial. I'm going to plant more. Thank you for sharing. I ate nastursiums as a young teen maybe younger in salads, I didn't get sick then but I am sick now I hope that wasn't a contributing factor.
I really doubt it, especially after what I have seen, I often have a hard time believing such warnings, it seems very unlikely to me that nasturtiums would cause problems with children - I think the warning I saw was more for a tincture made from them but even then, I am skeptical.
My chickens love them too, when the neighbours had them growing through the fence and over our retaining wall, you could see where the chickens could reach too as they jumped up and was a line they didn't grow below 😂. Neighbours not currently growing them anymore
Easy to grow plant some in your chicken cage under some netting let the chickens pick through it not destroying the plant but getting the leaves there are lots of herbs that a great for chickens health to peck as needed. I do oregano basil time mint and Pasley rosemary no one likes mint ha ha
New to your videos & to Nasturtiums. Thanks for the valuable tips. Research reassured me the entire plant is edible, for any age. Also the ASPCA says Nasturtiums are non-toxic to dogs, cats, & horses. I can't wait until my Alaska mix or Mahogany get large enough to "Cut & Come Again" I think Mahogany blossoms & Merlot Lettuce will look great!
I must have really rich soil in my side garden area because i had huge bunches of leaves and like two flowers haha. They are still beautiful, but, i wanted more flowers also.
Have been picking a couple of leaves at a time & dehydrating. Don't have a lot yet but every little bit helps. Going to try to fill a quart jar before summer's over. Off topic: canned 47 pints, 11 pint1/2s & 2 quarts of tony pears. Half are mine to keep. So. The 2 quarts had to get creative as ran out of sugar syrup so added the lemon juice they were soaking in with my homemade mint tea leaves from last year in with them. So it should be an interesting taste of summer this winter when I open them. I did lose 1 pint1/2 jar but that's Ok it was tasty. Oh & I always add nutmeg to my pears...turns them slightly pink.

My mother gave us nasturtium flowers in our salads when we were young. We only ate the flowers, we never had a problem. She usually added them to a green salad so we only had about 4 or so per salad.
I pickle the seeds every summer. They are hot, crunchy fresh tasting pops of yumminess! I make nasturtium leaf fritters, salad . And have made tincture for adding to my medicinals. They are a powerhouse plant in my opinion 😅
Now I know what happened to my cabbage plants this summer I attracted them to them with the Nasturtiums, thanks I know now what not to do next year thanks 😊
I grew nasturtiums my one and only time about 25 years ago. I don’t know why I haven’t grown them since. I grow mainly marigolds because I am surrounded by fields and it kind of keeps the bunnies away😂 good to know about the leaves in the flowers! I will keep that in mind I was thinking about growing them in containers. I can’t wait for my plants to produce some seeds for me for next year!
Thanks for this. I keep reading about planting them with zucchini but have never planted them. I wish I had some of those leaves right now. Something caught me and doesn't want to let go. 😷
This is my first year growing nasturtium. Due to there is plenty. I collect the good ones and leave the rest for black aphids. The only issue is that I didn't know that aphids love it so I planted next to my Cucumbers. Now my Cucumbers have it too.
EricaTep Ruiz, dawn dilute in water, in a watering can, over the aphids. They think that is nasty. They won't make the honey. Ant "farmers" are quick to move them somewhere new. Need to retreat after heavy rain or sprinklers, but my ants kept them far from the hibiscus this all played out on.
As kid, loved picking the flowers, pull off the bottom of the long base bit that's pointy and suck out the nectar very delicious, wasn't a giant fan of the flower but it's not horrendous. Leaf is a bit peppery for me straight up but adding as spice to meals could be good
Hello Heidi, this was a great informative video as always, I have tried to grow them this year, but no flowers yet. I want give up, I will keep trying them. Yours is so beautiful, I have tried in 3 locations in my gardens, but it may just be too hot here. TFS, blessings
Do you have lots of leaves? If so, then that simply means your soil is very rich, they will get little to no flowers in rich soil but tend to get lots of big leaves - which is great too :)
Rain Country no I don't have many trees, I think getting my seeds planted late, and then extreme heat has played a huge part, next year I think I will try something different. I so want these they are so pretty and the benefits are phenomenal
Nasturtiums have been a hard thing for me to grow here in north Texas. I've tried transplants and seeds, and neither seems happy. I'm going to try a few from direct sown seed this Fall, and hope that the cooler (though still pretty warm) temps will make them more likely to succeed. I'm not crazy about their taste, but the many other uses they bring to the table makes them worth the trouble in my book.
I too had problems growing them but planted yearly. After 3 yrs. they came up ALL OVER THE GARDEN! So many this past season. Maybe try throwing seeds every year and those who wish to grow will next year.
I'm in lower AZ and can grow them in early part of the year. Since they self-grow, they come up in Feb or March. When the heat comes on, those that have shade they last longer.
Great video and very informative. I just planted a ton of these everywhere and had no idea they were edible. If picking and eating off of the plant is there something you would want to do beforehand in case of little bugs or anything you couldn't see?
@@RainCountryHomestead Hi lovely lady, omg! I should have known you already had a video out on that! I'm so not good navigating the internet! @@diannrichards581 No worries, we all have a learning curve when first coming to youtube and then they go and change things and you have to learn all over again! haha!
My grandparents always lined the edges of the tobacco fields with long rows of nasturtiums. It wasn’t until recently that I started to wonder why, since they never ate them (that I knew of, although my grandfather was known to wander through his garden and just eat stuff off the vine) or even cut them for decoration. Do they have some sort of pest control properties?
Yes, they do. They are said to repel white flies and since slugs love them, they are more likely to be drawn to the nasturtiums and leave other garden things alone
@@RainCountryHomestead The flavor doesn't matter to me since the brain injury caused me to loose my sense of smell, hunger and taste. I eat food only for their nutrients and these sound like they add a host of additional nutrients to my green powder mix which I started because of one of your wonderful videos. Thank you, God Bless and keep sharing your wisdom.
Thank you for a very informative video. I read someone's story, where they felt cold coming, and they ate several nasturtium leaves and cold never came. I personally didn't get to try it as I rarely have colds. Last one I had, I kicked with with lomatium tincture. Half teaspoon, and then another half teaspoon next morning. I never had it leave before. However lomatium is not very common plant, and nasturtium is. :) How much of the tincture and how much of the turmeric your son took?
Im wondering if deer like them? We have many extended families of deer and must fence our garden and wonder if we should also fence in the nasturtiums.
I also wanted to ask, what would you think of drying the leaves and flowers, grinding them and putting them in capsules? If the stems are edible could I do that with the stems and save the leaves and flowers for tea and salads.
Yep, you can do that and yes, the stems are edible too and I would assume the benefits in the stems are equal to the leaves but I would not use any of them in tea only because a radish tasting tea does not sound appealing to me
🧐🧐🧐🧐 Question please? I bought a "Hollywood Hibiscus, Trophy Wife", what parts of this plant medicinal as I only found 1 video & it did not give me any needed info. as deeply needing... Great video as always, thank you Heidi, smiles... Excited for an answer, thank you... ⭐️😘 🌹🌈💞🎵🌷🌼🌺💖😆👏👍💫🌟✌ 💛 ☘️ ☘️~"1 & all please take care of you & for others that need you through all these undesired difficult trying times"~😘 ~"Love, Hope, Peace, Kindness, Dreams, Inspiration, Laughter, Joy, Give, Live & Let Live"~
I am not familiar enough with hibiscus to know what parts and how to use it so I recommend you look into it yourself. Simply type in into your browser: Benefits of hibiscus (I really do not think variety matters a whole lot but if you want to, just type that in too but you may not get information specifically on that anyway). Then compare the different links you come across and their information. They should also tell you what parts of the plant to use
I am coming back and watching all your nasturtium videos again. This is the second year that I’m trying to grow them and they are not germinating! I nicked them this year. Any suggestions?
They can take awhile to germinate. I never do anything special with mine other than starting them in planter pots up against the house or green house until they get big enough to transplant. This way they stay more protected from the weird cold spring days we have been getting for the past couple of years whey they are first trying to grow
@@RainCountryHomestead thank you for getting back to me so quick and for the information! And I used to have them growing all the time when I was a lot younger but I bought them from a flower shop. Now that I know they’re medicinal value I’ve been trying to grow them.!😊
Question- I’m planning on growing some of these this spring, for medicinal usages in my front yard and some in the garden as a trap crop, however I read today that they attract aphids and I’ve not had an aphid problem in my vegetable garden, now I’m uncertain if I should grow them at all, can you advise?
I actually have read some time back that they help keep aphids off plants but either way, I have never had a problem with them attracting aphids to anything and I grow them where ever I can in my gardens
Will have to start growing this, always looking for natural way to treat illness. Do you have any info on what to grow to lower blood pressure? Had to go to doctor to get blood pressure med. They wouldn’t give me a prescription unless I had blood work. 900 dollars I will go without next time. So looking for a natural way of treating blood pressure.
The main problem is that chronic high blood pressure is caused from another underlying issue. Treating blood pressure with drugs is like giving some one a pain killer for a broken leg but not resetting and casting it. Then you have the cost to your health by taking those medications. There are a good amount of herbs that do help regulate blood pressure but you may want to look into what is causing it to go up.
The leaves are best to harvest before flowering as that is when they get their biggest and healthiest but once the flowers start growing, more energy goes into those. I harvest the flowers as soon as I can
I know you mentioned it is helpful to take when infections are just starting out but would it still be effective for a chronic sinus infection? Or what would you recommend? Any advice would be appreciated.
While I cannot say what is going to work best for you, generally speaking, yes, it should work for any infection at any time if it is the right herb for you
I recommend making poultices for boils from comfrey, plantain, calendula, and/or yarrow. Make a strong tea out of any one or combination of these four then soak a cloth in it and place over the boils. Calendula is especially good at killing the bacteria causing the infection and the other herbs will speed up healing
In my mind, I would enjoy being your neighbor and learning from you.
For now, I am another sister in Christ learning from you online.

I pickle the seeds every summer. They are hot, crunchy fresh tasting pops of yumminess! I make nasturtium leaf fritters, salad . And have made tincture for adding to my medicinals. They are a powerhouse plant in my opinion 😅
Yep, they are great!
I'm soaking the seeds now. Thank you so much for this information phew!
Now I know what happened to my cabbage plants this summer I attracted them to them with the Nasturtiums, thanks I know now what not to do next year thanks 😊
You can stuff the leaves like if it was cabbage. So you have these little stuffed nasturtium leave in a tomatoe sauce. Very healthy for you.
yep!
Nasturtiums are Delightful, Colorful 🥗 Salads, Edible Flowers
Plus all the other benefits mentioned. It is my number one herb I turn to for an antibiotic
I'd love to hear what your top favorite flowers are and why.
If I can ever remember to sit down and do that video! haha
Wow you’re amazing. Thank you for all this information.🙂
Great Video!! I was curious if you have a video on how to make the nasturtium tincture?
I see you already found it :)
Just started my leaf tincture.
I am sad, I did not get a chance this year to plant nasturtiums. I have last year and they were beautiful.
HAHA!! Here’s the comment I left a year ago😹
Sometimes planting a radish or three will help deter aphids.
Great information. I didn’t even know how to pronounce the word lol. Now I do👍🏻
Great video! Just planted some and are going to use these tips.
what an awesome idea, kimchi nasturtiums! 😍
O man, I need to make some right now! I have so many nasturtium flowers! haha
I would love to have you as my neighbor 😊. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
TennesseeGirl try a shade cloth?? And a clay unfired pot in ground to water it slowly when it's hot.
Edie Boudreau thank you so very much, will try it, blessings
Do you have lots of leaves? If so, then that simply means your soil is very rich, they will get little to no flowers in rich soil but tend to get lots of big leaves - which is great too :)
Rain Country no I don't have many trees, I think getting my seeds planted late, and then extreme heat has played a huge part, next year I think I will try something different. I so want these they are so pretty and the benefits are phenomenal
@@tennesseegirl1215keep trying! It took me several years to successfully grow some ❤
Thank you, wonderful video and information! I so appreciate your sharing with us!!
I always learn something from you. Thank you. Blessings
My leaves are so tiny...nothing like yours....but at least I got some this year😁
Thank you for the information
Hi lovely lady, could you please show us the process you use your vinegars to wash your hair?
Here is a video where I explain it (at least I believe I do in this one): ruclips.net/video/G71782grqJc/видео.html
@@RainCountryHomestead Hi lovely lady, omg! I should have known you already had a video out on that! I'm so not good navigating the internet! I'll have to have my nephew show me how to move around RUclips, (I'm more of a show me than a tell me kinda gal.😂). That way, I don't waist your time. I know you are really busy. Thank you bunches!
@@diannrichards581 No worries, we all have a learning curve when first coming to youtube and then they go and change things and you have to learn all over again! haha!
My kids ate them as toddlers, and I had the flowers when I was pregnant
The yellow flowers contain a lot of lutin which is a huge benefit for your eyes
Will the chickens eat them? I want to know before planting..
I always enjoy watching you, thank you Heidi!
Yes, they like the leaves. so I block them off from those areas while they are growing.
They can grow in pots too, many often do that, so you might consider doing that instead
Great info.
I grow them n love them too🙏🏼👍🏻
Hi Heidi, Oh another GREAT video. Would the nasturtium leaves be a good addition to a powdered green smoothie mix?
It would depend on the flavor you are wanting, the leaves have a similar taste to the flowers, much like a radish
I think he took about a Tablespoon or two of the tincture and a couple of my homemade turmeric and black pepper capsules.
Thank you, that is very useful to know.
Im wondering if deer like them? We have many extended families of deer and must fence our garden and wonder if we should also fence in the nasturtiums.
Not sure, I suggest looking it up. I know they do not like mints so those are good options to grow along the fence line
I also wanted to ask, what would you think of drying the leaves and flowers, grinding them and putting them in capsules? If the stems are edible could I do that with the stems and save the leaves and flowers for tea and salads.
Yep, you can do that and yes, the stems are edible too and I would assume the benefits in the stems are equal to the leaves but I would not use any of them in tea only because a radish tasting tea does not sound appealing to me
@@RainCountryHomestead
I agree, thank you. I love your homestead.
⭐️😘 🌹🌈💞🎵🌷🌼🌺💖😆👏👍💫🌟✌ 💛 ☘️

Super info
Now that I know they’re medicinal value I’ve been trying to grow them.!😊
Thank you!😊 great info.
Do you think a nasturtium oxymel would be a good alternative to a tincture?
Shine On☝️🕊😃
Question- I’m planning on growing some of these this spring, for medicinal usages in my front yard and some in the garden as a trap crop, however I read today that they attract aphids and I’ve not had an aphid problem in my vegetable garden, now I’m uncertain if I should grow them at all, can you advise?
I actually have read some time back that they help keep aphids off plants but either way, I have never had a problem with them attracting aphids to anything and I grow them where ever I can in my gardens
@@RainCountryHomestead ok thank you for replying !

Excellent info.,Jehovah richly bless you,family.
Heidi. Can you explain how you wash your hair in vinegar please, as I'd like to try this.

Look into hawthorn berry tincture or leaf infusion, yarrow tincture, and fresh red beet juice. Juice in small amounts, about shot glass worth.
Is there a good time to cut the leaves and flowers to dehydrate?
The leaves are best to harvest before flowering as that is when they get their biggest and healthiest but once the flowers start growing, more energy goes into those. I harvest the flowers as soon as I can
Well, I guess I missed the opportunity. They have already flowered and the flowers are dying off.
I know you mentioned it is helpful to take when infections are just starting out but would it still be effective for a chronic sinus infection? Or what would you recommend? Any advice would be appreciated.
While I cannot say what is going to work best for you, generally speaking, yes, it should work for any infection at any time if it is the right herb for you
Can I start some for the fall? For the tincture did you use fresh leaves or dried
It really depends on your area, if we started them then here, we would not get much, if anything
Great info thanks Heidi!
What would you suggest for high blood pressure, and eye conditions, did the thyroid herbs help with weight loss.

OMG I hv this flower in my garden but never knew that this flower is edible...
It is one of the tastiest. Day lilies are another pretty taste flower, they are quite sweet.
@@RainCountryHomestead thanks for the information.... From now I'm going to use them in my recipe list
My daughter gets boils. The removed some glands and disfigured her legs what can I do to help because it is still a problem!?
I recommend making poultices for boils from comfrey, plantain, calendula, and/or yarrow. Make a strong tea out of any one or combination of these four then soak a cloth in it and place over the boils. Calendula is especially good at killing the bacteria causing the infection and the other herbs will speed up healing
i make a herbal vinegar with these.
Yes, I do as well but for use in my hair
@@RainCountryHomestead i never considered a hair rinse. i will give that a try. i like the taste of the vinegar.
