William Lai Ching-te was inaugurated as Taiwan’s new leader on May 20, 2024. In his first speech as president, Lai pledged to uphold the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, and called on Beijing to work jointly for peace. The head of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won a narrow victory in the January elections. The island’s new president faces various challenges, including a divided society as well as strong opposition and pressure from mainland China, which views Lai as a separatist.

It's so disturbing to see politicians turn into street thugs in their own Parliment. I have the same impression when the South Korean politicians go after each other. Do they know the meaning of civility? Do they know how they look to the world?
They really don't care how they look to the world because they are hypocrites. Apart from being uncivilized, for a nation that claims to be the most democratic in Asia, the violence that erupted in their parliament is ironically definitely NOT democratic, but smacks of autocracy and authoritarianism....hypocrisy on show.

It shows that they are genuinely passionate about representing their voters. I an actually jealous that they do this, I hope our country does this more often lol. Unlike countries like North korea and China where the politicians act like robots but the prime minister, it makes it seem like no one is keeping the boss in-check.

That's what they've been doing for the last few decades. Even though they lost the civil war in China mainland long ago, it wasn't until the end of the 20th century, when the contrast in power between the two sides moved towards a radical imbalance, that they began to take independence to the table. For both sides of a civil war, only the weaker side will show radical behaviour that includes independence or something like that, like North Korea announcing not too long ago that it no longer recognises that it is the same nation as South Korea.
China North Korea South Korea Taiwan, can form a matrix, which has an obvious asymmetrical relationship, but also a subtle mirror relationship. Both North Korea and Taiwan are caught in an ideological quagmire that could invite regional disaster. And both China and South Korea have paid price to outmanoeuvre their rivals.
