The French-ruled island of New Caledonia is in a state of civil unrest following the adoption of a controversial electoral reform bill on May 15, 2024. The measure allows recent immigrants to participate in local elections. But the historically marginalised indigenous Kanaks say the change would further dilute their voting bloc. Paris has accused pro-independence groups of fuelling the unrest.

Not really just France alone. Australia and the U.S. want France there too, because if China sets up a military base on the island they could effectively encircle Australia and blockade our eastern seaboard. This would greatly threaten Australian naval forces in the pacific and may provide China a launch platform for an invasion of Australia and New Zealand. Or it could even be used to house Chinas growing nuclear sub fleet which will provide it the opportunity to annihilate major Australian cities and ensure nuclear winter comes to the Southern Hemisphere by militarising the Oceanic region. The U.S. pacific fleet will be forced to split its forces away from the East Asia and attempt to secure New Caledonia. Having Chinese forces on New Caledonia would also make the island a nuclear target in the event of war. So until China either collapses or is no longer a threat militarily New Caledonia won’t receive its independence.

There's no great plan to control the Nouvelle Calédonie, the territory is already french, there has been more than 3 referendums about it now, and the people able to vote are the same since 1998 since they frozen the electoral count to not just great replace what was already a tiny minority

To demonstrate how much of a problem this is, just imagine if all of New Zealand's domestic and foreign policy was decided by Parliament in London, regardless of all the people who live there, in particular the Maori. That's what you have with the so called 'New Caledonia'. Bear in mind the indigenous Kanak have been on that island when what we now call France was still called Gaul, the Frankish tribes (the name France deriving from these people) having yet to migrate from beyond the Rhine.

      1. NC is already self governing for most its domestic policies, including laws
      2. They were supposed to define the NC citizenship since 1998, in order to have an 'ordered' independence. They have delayed so much that there are now people who would probably qualify for this citizenship by now who are denied their right of vote.
And of top of it, the French government played terribly bad by setting a tight deadline that favors one of the two parties, whereas since 1988 France was supposed to be the referee overseeing what the NC people would decide between themselves.
NC is probably the worst skeleton we have in our closet nowadays in France, and trust me, many people in Mainland France want to 'get rid' of NC. Not in a hatred or revengeful way, but because at some point, as in a couple, when you are parting, you need to have things done completely, and not halfway. Especially when halfway means receiving huge lumps of money from us in the mainland.

It's slow coz the Austronesians and other precursor settling the Pacific were from SEA and tend to fill up an island first, then some settlers would move out to find a new island once they feel they're starting to get crowded.

It's a long way from France. However, if the French leave, the native people will be deprived, like the people of Vanuatu, of a lot - policing, health care and hospitals, street lights, education. In Vanuatu, I meet a woman earning a small living by cleaning, whose 13 year old daughter stays home and watches her friends go off to secondary school because her mother cannot afford to pay for it. The daughter's grief, her mother's despair and poverty, are cruel. The French had what they wanted, a balance where French could pretend to be South Sea Islanders and thus have the best of everything, but they wanted more, and blew it for everyone.

These "referendums" were a ploy by France to continue its illegal occupation of the archipelago. France designed them so the no "vote" would always succeed as it has no intention or desire to return the island to its rightful owners. When it colonized the island in 1853 , did it organize referendums to find out if the Kanaks wanted their island to be used as a penal colony? After it gave the Kanaks the right to vote in 1957, did it organize "referendums" on whether to return the island to their rightful owners? No. Instead it waited until 2018 after it succeeded in changing the demographics of the archipelago to organize & preside over "referendums" that would make a no "vote" possible. Many people around the world who have had first hand experience with colonial France's conniving ways can clearly see the handwritings on the wall.
