The French-ruled island of New Caledonia is in a state of civil unrest following the adoption of a controversial electoral reform bill on May 15, 2024. The measure allows recent immigrants to participate in local elections. But the historically marginalised indigenous Kanaks say the change would further dilute their voting bloc. Paris has accused pro-independence groups of fuelling the unrest.

3rd biggest Nickle production in the world. If you wonder why the French still there.
Always about resources. Never use your own if you can take someone else’s.
If New Caledonia became independent it would turn into a country like Singapore or Israel. Instead, like all French colonies it is poor and stripped.
Not really just France alone. Australia and the U.S. want France there too, because if China sets up a military base on the island they could effectively encircle Australia and blockade our eastern seaboard. This would greatly threaten Australian naval forces in the pacific and may provide China a launch platform for an invasion of Australia and New Zealand. Or it could even be used to house Chinas growing nuclear sub fleet which will provide it the opportunity to annihilate major Australian cities and ensure nuclear winter comes to the Southern Hemisphere by militarising the Oceanic region. The U.S. pacific fleet will be forced to split its forces away from the East Asia and attempt to secure New Caledonia. Having Chinese forces on New Caledonia would also make the island a nuclear target in the event of war. So until China either collapses or is no longer a threat militarily New Caledonia won’t receive its independence.

To demonstrate how much of a problem this is, just imagine if all of New Zealand's domestic and foreign policy was decided by Parliament in London, regardless of all the people who live there, in particular the Maori. That's what you have with the so called 'New Caledonia'. Bear in mind the indigenous Kanak have been on that island when what we now call France was still called Gaul, the Frankish tribes (the name France deriving from these people) having yet to migrate from beyond the Rhine.
1. NC is already self governing for most its domestic policies, including laws
2. They were supposed to define the NC citizenship since 1998, in order to have an 'ordered' independence. They have delayed so much that there are now people who would probably qualify for this citizenship by now who are denied their right of vote.
And of top of it, the French government played terribly bad by setting a tight deadline that favors one of the two parties, whereas since 1988 France was supposed to be the referee overseeing what the NC people would decide between themselves.
NC is probably the worst skeleton we have in our closet nowadays in France, and trust me, many people in Mainland France want to 'get rid' of NC. I'm a native Frenchman living in France and I support giving New Caledonia its independence now. It's a French colony.
You should know better than this.
You should know about the rejection of independence by vote.
You should know about the proportional representation that is not found in a colony. But is present here.
So even though they don't want independence what you're saying is you want to kick them out of France.
no one cares what you think. Seriously
They have 3 Independence Referendum and everytime they voted NO.
You really believe thats legit just because the french monitor it 😂😂
If I am a resident caledonian I will also say no, what for? Independent New caledonia will eventually be ruled by corrupt politicians. Better be a French citizen.
@@JamesSmith-uw4nxwell, algeria got it's independence because of referendum so...
@@JamesSmith-uw4nx and do you have evidence against it? I bet none.
Lots of jobs : free health care :
Free education and Welfare cheques every month. ?!?!
But they want to be Independent...??! Bankrupt in 3 years... 😂😂. Bon Chance...!!
The graphic at 3:32 shows reversed percentages of the 2018 vote.
The graph displayed from 3:30 - 3:35 has the numbers reversed for the results of the 2018 independence referendum. The green ("Yes") vote was 43%, and the red ("No") vote was 57%. 😅
Because they did 3 BS vote on New Caledonia independence.
what was BS about them? Recently settled in people couldn't vote you know?
The only way these votes are BS if you discount over half the population the grounds that they ain’t local enough after hundreds of years.
That's the point. Only a femme people have voted and they have chose to be french
While I understand them not desiring to be a colony of France, looting local business owners just shows their true motivation 🤨
The French state should pay for the damages as it is responsible for the unrest with its refusal to return the archipelago to its rightful owners, the Kanak people.
@@imjamming says who?
No it does not!
It's a long way from France. However, if the French leave, the native people will be deprived, like the people of Vanuatu, of a lot - policing, health care and hospitals, street lights, education. In Vanuatu, I meet a woman earning a small living by cleaning, whose 13 year old daughter stays home and watches her friends go off to secondary school because her mother cannot afford to pay for it. The daughter's grief, her mother's despair and poverty, are cruel. The French had what they wanted, a balance where French could pretend to be South Sea Islanders and thus have the best of everything, but they wanted more, and blew it for everyone.
The native people were living and thriving on their archipelago long before the French colonizers set foot on the archipelago. The settler class in New Caledonia and the French ruling elite in the mainland only care about their economic and geostrategic interests in Kanaky/New Caledonia.
Quite a few comments on referendums held but no stress on the point that the natives of the land boycotted the referendums.
only boycotted the third. try listening.
Don’t Forget there were three referendum for the independancy last few years. It’s not a forced colonization
Whats going on ? Occupation ?
Basing from the video. The French expanded voting to citizens on the island. And i guess the minority population feels angry that their small numbers mean less influence in government
It’s not an occupation because the population is an equal part of France and they rejected independence when they had the opportunity to vote on it.
This makes me sad. New Caledonia is such a gorgeous place with awesome people. My dreams of living there are crushed
Macaroni and France thought that they could be colonialists forever... guess what Baguettes? The world is growing up, and so should you.
Protecting the equality of democracy is not colonialism you halfwit.
So in France if we refuse vote for people come after 1998 it's racism but in new caledonia it's normal and fighting against colonialism ?
France has too repay for colonialism so more migrant men
New Caledonia is a victim
They're not immigrants. They're settlers. They are there against the will of the indigenous people who want independence from France.
That's because natives don't exist in Europe. Somehow.
Exactly. These people are hilarious
@@tanez778apparently Europeans don't have culture and actually don't exist, if you'd listen to media and academe 😂
Let them have independence, dont you have better thing to do in France than send troops to an island on other side of world 😢
They don't want independence. They voted three times in the last 20 years to stay with France.
The population voted against independence in the past three referendum.
France will never bow to tyranny by the minority.
nickels.. hmm sounds like someone's playing fire here.
Chinese Fire Drill...
This news must be shared more friends.
Irony is that french were once seen as imbodiment of Freedom(USA never was as it given in lies) as first well known freedom movement was made by french themselves and now they become imbodent of what they fought against...
How is supporting the majority who want to remain a part of France, opposite to freedom?
@@erikthomsen4768The ''majority'' by France bring people there all this years. Its a classic old tactics of Divide-Conquer if youre too ignorant to learn
17000km far away.. but not yet independence 😱
Order a la Metropole!?
I think some countries must support their independence
Even if the majority of the Islanders voted against independence?
It's 2024, can France pack up and leave New Caledonia? Keep fighting Wantoks. Support from Papua New Guinea.
Careful what you wish for.

Come prepared here, you dealing with an educated native.
PS: Tell France to fark off from the Pacific and leave New Caledonia alone.
Fun fact: The country that have annexed the most countries in the last 100 years is India.
IT BELONGS TO FRANCE not some rif raf
This is France and the local voted keep it that way. They don’t want independence.
Colonization still exists by democracy exporters.
France losing influence everywhere. Maybe they and their besties in the UK should stop being told what to do by the US 🤣
The British rule America they are the majority in the senate and the congress.
The French multinationals rile France
The government needs to respect and recognize these people wish and wants as a democratic nation
"27,359 miles away from Paris!!!???" I though imperialist nations only kept their colonies near their main land... plus for what I see, they dont seem to get any help for education, housing, health services and cheap wine and cheese like all the French get...
Come to Indonesia then, we have the largest nickel deposit but you should process it localy
France wants to keep its colony. Chine wants a new colony.
This is a province not a colony. It has proportional representation in Paris and voted against independence.
China don't have colonies.
They don't want independance, they just want to be as autonomous as possible while receiving as much subsidies as possible from the French government.
Do you know what the french took from them? Do you actually have a brain? How do you think french got rich? They took resources from these colonies you dumb F&*^(
they would gladly take independebce to rid of the French whites and non indigenous ECONOMIC migrants! but France, like most WHITE colonials want to hold on to the nickel (& other resources)..
far enough.
You nailed it. Both parties in NC, independantists and loyalists alike, have been delaying the process for too long. NC is currently a French territory with so much autonomy that they are having best of both worlds. More and more people in mainland France are becoming pro-independence, not only because they are sympathetic to the Kanaks' fight for freedom, but also because they are fed up to see their tax money flying 17000km away to bail out this territory that is almost self governing.
and oppress white people by not giving them the right to vote at the same time
Freedom to the native tribal people!👏👏😊👍👍
Warum werden nicht alle Medien angezeigt?
the fact that it is french territory is disturbing enough
how about indonesia stops occupying parts of East Timor and Papua New Guina whilst doing a g3n*c1d3 there before giving lessons to others yeah?
Why?
Because France listens to his citizens who overwhelmingly voted to remain rather than a loud minority?
I bet people are just taking advantage of the chaos then loots the shops for whatever they wants lol.
The Kanaks lost the independence referendum 3 times...
These "referendums" were a ploy by France to continue its illegal occupation of the archipelago. France designed them so the no "vote" would always succeed as it has no intention or desire to return the island to its rightful owners. When it colonized the island in 1853 , did it organize referendums to find out if the Kanaks wanted their island to be used as a penal colony? After it gave the Kanaks the right to vote in 1957, did it organize "referendums" on whether to return the island to their rightful owners? No. Instead it waited until 2018 after it succeeded in changing the demographics of the archipelago to organize & preside over "referendums" that would make a no "vote" possible. Many people around the world who have had first hand experience with colonial France's conniving ways can clearly see the handwritings on the wall.
Free colonialism and Free Palestine!
This is not Palestine this is PACIFIC
This is a province with proportional representation.
Not a colony is China want you to believe.
Most people voted against independence. The matter is settled.
3:32 I think the numbers for 2018 are reversed
