I know this is old but it might help someone. A couple more things to always check with used or supposedly reconditioned heads. Check the spark plug threads, they are often messed up. And if You find a “deal” on refurbished heads, ALWAYS do a cc volume measurement on the combustion area. Very important for compression calculations. Personally, I would highly recommend to steer clear of “reconditioned” heads. I found out the hard way.
I might add to check for any visible cracking in the exhaust ports. These cracks are harder to see but nevertheless good to check for.
Good tip!
Thanks Chris. Once again you nailed it.
In regards to the comment about 40 hp heads with the round boss having studs that go all the way through to the block I would like to see that
Awesome video chris. Thanks dude.
Great video. I have a 57 oval but not sure if 25 or 36 hp. The heads are stamped with a number 111 101 371A. There is also a Vw logo with a 29 to the right of this. Does anybody know if this is 36 hp?
On my head, there is a vertical crack at top of the valve guide boss, starts at boss upper part and ends at lower, what can be done?
Thanks
Get a new head.
@@classicvwbugs I did not specify very well, the boss is like 7mm thick (914 head), the crack goes from top of the boss and goes down 6mm
I've noticed bare heads, ready to assemble I assume are $200:00 plus. How much are
genuine German heads worth----dirty and need a valve job?
nice.
