My little 36hp, 1960 Bug got me through high school, college, and the USAF here in Calif. That was one brave little car and "The Little Engine That Could". When the poor little body had had enough, a friend of mine bought it, put the engine/transaxle in a buggy and as far as I know, it's still running at Tom's place in Alabama. God bless you little "Schmertz". I miss you.
This video was very helpful when i restored my beetle's engine, and i tried to find videos of restoring or building a motor for my beetle, but when i saw this, i got it done for a meet in time, i wore a mask at the meet, and kept distance too, but i wouldn't get to the meet in time without this video, thank you sooo much! -all love and support from this norwegian batsard! (PS: i made my engine stronger and faster!)
In 1976 my buddy with his 1960 36 hp and my, 1964 40 hp had a drag and we were dead even. I did not know the 1960 had different gears. I did like the manual choke on his. The 36 is a great motor. Cheers!
Great idea ! Learned something new about these engines since I have never taken one apart or built a 36 hp. Aren't you supposed to rev 2-3K for about 20 min or is that just 1600's to seat the rings ?
As always, love your stuff. I can never see myself needing to build/rebuild such an old configuration but I love engine building "porn" like this. It is so funny since I'm currently in the process of disassembly on my original 79 L-Jetronic FI engine and I love the way I can see all of the evolution steps from the 36hp ones to the final US import FI engines. (Now... I just need to work on learning the later 1600i Mexican engine configurations!)
It never occured to me to coat my the cheaper pushrod tubes with some clear before installation. I'll need to add that to my build list when I'm not using stainless. Thanks for that tip!
Hi, Chris, Thanks for your attention. The thermostat & other parts make engine to run @optimum temp . hot or cold , short or long distance. Engine @ optimum temp last longer. better fuel economy etc., 10 Prototypes were tested in Austrian Alps & Afghanistan for cold & hot condition for engine reliability before production started. I have rebuilt a few Bug motors in the past ,since I'm not doing now I do enjoy watching on RUclips. If i do again I would fit other than Thermostat, oil temp gauge, oil pressure gauge & Tachometer, Not hard to fit all electrical instruments without plumbing. Anytime while driving the car @ a glance U can see the Engine'Health. Cheers, Tissa.
Enjoyed the vid, this is what I'm good at and love, even though my old engine is sitting on a shelf had to put a larger engine in just to keep up with moden traffic 😂👍
Hi Vallone,. Iam one among the people who follow and admire the great stuff you do . .. all the way from UGANDA (AFRICA),. & iam greatful to have learnt alot from such a great work ( videos ) u put here.. However as iam going to own a bug for the 1st time and the fact that it's gonna be a project,.. I would love to learn how to upgrade a 1200 to a 1600 or 1800 engines and retain the stock looks.. as u once mentioned ( that they can be upgraded) in one of your posts on here.. Waiting.. BIG UP.
I just usually buy the big bore piston and cylinder kits for my stock motors. But I keep them stock looking. I do not like to upgrade too much, I find the kits that work with the existing blocks which requires no machining to the block. so a 1200 to a 1385 and a 1600 to a 1641cc.
How did you prep the block? Was it painted, if so with what paint? Or did you sandblast/water polish it? Great work! I’ll do this myself really soon! Cheers
Hi buddy great video has been very useful for me and my 30(36hp) just wondering about valve adjustment as my pulley only has one mark, is this tdc for 1 and 3 or 7.5btdc? As I have been setting to 0.004” using the mark and another one 180deg for 2 and 4 and still seam a bit loose. Many thanks for the uk
What a great video. I hope the day never comes that I have to rebuild my 1300 to THAT extent but when I take it out to clean it up and paint the tins this video will be super helpful. One question though...when you flush out the oil cooler, what do you flush it out with?
Just seen a 59 beetle for sale in the UK proper looks straight although I'm a mechanic by trade years ago the engine might need a go over what is the availability of parts for these engine are they more expensive heater boxes or as they're called in the UK heat exchangers availability carb rebuild kits and running these on E10 fuel what do I need to look for many thanks
Excellent video, outstanding videography and editing! Where can I get a manual like the one you were referencing? Even better if it’s with dog eared pages and greasy fingerprints please.
Sound of success for a while, do they make new replacement heater boxes? When i lived in MA and had a few bugs a friend worked at an AUDI dealership and told me they got their heater boxes from Texas due to being rust free, that was late 70's when they were still plentiful. For a driver a late 60's early 70's would be best, much more power than that 36/40 hp and even though those micro taillights are original they are tough to see at night
Hi Chris, just a question, i've seen a few vw videos and noticed some bug engines with copper hard fuel lines, mine has rubber hoses, is it possible to change this rubber hoses to copper? Thanks, great videos.

Very cool man, glad you enjoyed it.
The 1100 is amazing piece of artwork that every single air cooled engine should bow down to
As of now, waiting for my fan shroud to dry, just painted, and then, it’s just the starting process!

So fulfilling to see true craftsmanship make parts come to life. Thank you.
A great video! I never painted my oil coolers on the idea that the paint reduced cooling due to the paint's insulation quality.
This video will come in handy one day, thank you!

Thanks for doing this compilation, really enjoy seeing you restoring old beetles, if only I could afford one ..............atb from England
