A well deserved shoutout to @drivingenthusiastaustralia who did the braking test on Tank 300 (video linked in the description) for his work and efforts he put into the test. My thoughts on how JC presented this information should not be taken as me criticising the creator of that source video - it's a solid material worth your attention on its own! 👌

I just got my Fossil Grey Tank 300 delivered to me 2 weeks ago. I have nothing but good things to say about the car. I'm still not able to understand why people are going crazy about the wheel leaving ground for a fraction of a second, its the case with any Jeep as well or any car with such a boxy design. Like mentioned in the video, this car is not meant for racing so this won't be an issue for normal driving anyways. My car drives so smooth and perfect through the city and many people already approached me asking my thoughts regarding the car as they are concerned about the payload. While I agree the payload is low, I'm not someone who used to tow caravans or trailers anyways, so it doesn't really bother me.
I did my research not just based on YT videos, but also the internet and compared this car with other in the similar category in the market and this one really had a lot more to offer for the price. If I had to buy a Toyota Hilux or a Ford Raptor or a Land Cruiser in 2023 for nearly double the price, I would expect some advanced tech and looks/modern design especially in the interior. These Toyota cars look like their interiors were designed in 2015. I test drove all these cars and I honestly couldn't feel any difference in terms of driving capability and comfort but I loved what GWM have done with the Tank's interior (for the fraction of the price). You can call it a copy of Mercedes G-Wagon, but hell, which brand doesn't copy design/tech/or anything in today's market.
I know Toyota have been well established in the Australian market since decades but that doesn't mean other manufacturers cars are not worthy enough. I would give this car a 9/10 today, 9 only because you guys who tow trailers and caravans know that this is not for you. Apart from that I would say, you gotta be in it to feel it. I'm least concerned about the resale value as I'll own this car for maybe 6-7 years as soon as the warranty expires, I'll sell it and buy something else. For me, how much money I spend out of my pocket TODAY is more important than what I may get back in 6-7 years. Also market is changing, used vehicles value keeps going up and down. With the quality of cars GWM is throwing at the market today, I personally believe that their cars are going to substantially create a huge presence in the market in next 5-6 years and the value MAY increase. (Again this is just my personal opinion, I may be wrong as well, but who cares). I'm definitely happy with my Tank. Thanks GWM.

Mechanic for 35 years here. Cadogan is 100% on the money. Wheels leaving the ground means that the brake balance is way off, chassis balance is way off, the rear brakes do nothing and ABS can't function - exactly when you need it the most - under emergency braking. It is unforgivable and that alone makes the vehicle inherently dangerous for not only the occupants but also other road users and not fit for purpose. But it's cheap and cash for comment stooges will keep pushing it as we can see here.

Yeah I was really disappointed by his video as well. I've driven hundreds of cars, both on road and off road as well as done some serious 4x4ing and as a proud owner of a Tank 300 and having put it through it's paces it is an INCREDIBLE car. The fact it's half the price of the other big boys as well is what makes it doubly as impressive. His video seemed like clickbait to appease a few Landy and Patrol owners

I have owned my Tank 300 for a week , it is tbe most advanced car I've owned . I still have a Discovery 3 a landcruiser and got out of a Volvo xc 90 to get into Tank. I bought it knowing full well it had a small luggage compartment and low payload. Having driven it for a week I can say the fuel economy is pretty good yes it does dip its nose a little under heavy braking but not alarmingly I did find the flat bonnet a bit difficult to look over at first but got use to it I found the rear view mirror assembly a little distracting ( I'm tall) but got use to it. I heard lots about the ELK system and at first it was a little startling but after I stopped wrestling with it and worked with it using a light touch on the wheel I find it fine. Tbe blinker cancelation did take a little to get use to but it's fine now a week later.
I bought it NOT to tow a huge caravan but will tow a small trailer .
I bought it because I liked it and still do.
The Driving enthusiast Chanel JC refers to did not bag the Tank at all quite the opposite but did mention the braking but this was done under extreme braking and still pulled up
In a straight line, you can find pictures on tbe web of a jeep wrangler lifting its rear wheels so high in a similar test you could walk under it .
You don't buy a tractor to enter the Formula one circuit you buy it to work on tbe farm.
    I
Like the tank I feel safe in it ( in all my years driving I have never had to brake that hard I felt the ABS work, I drive conservatively I guess)
I am happy with it, it was my 50 grand so really that's all that matters

Thanks Dimitry for much mor fair comments. Yes, the Tank 300 is built for off-road with softer suspension, which causes the dive.
Although with the 1/8' lift of the rear wheel, Tank 300 with original suspension and stock tyres can achieve braking distance in 42m. With firming suspension and more gripping tyres, I expect that it can achieve even shorter braking distance.
For your info - CarExpert recently did a test in 12 popular SUVs, including 100-0km/h braking test. The results are:
    Ford Everest Platinum V6 @ 44.74m 2492kg
    Ford Everest Trend Bi-Turbo @ 46.07m 2417kg
    Isuzu MU-X @ 42.63m 2175kg
    Nissan Patrol @ 44.99m 2746 kg

    Toyota LandCruiser 300 @ 42.84m 2630kg
    Toyota LandCruiser Prado @ 39.03m 2385kg
CarExpert also did the test for Tank 300 (2155kg), which has the braking distance of 42.09m, fitting in the normal range.
In addition, Tank 300 can pass moose test in 74km/h.
You are right, the resell value is a different story. It needs the historical reputation and built quality, which to be approved by time.

I agree with your position that any body on frame 4x4 must be driven defensively to avoid getting into trouble in the first place. I also agree with JCs point that there is still an issue with the suspension engineering in the Tank that must be resolved and it isnt a good look for something like that to be an issue for any emerging brand. Having said this all carakers make mistakes, lets see if GWM fix this one quick. On resale, I agree with you. The Toyota's 4x4s have great resale not just because of reliability, but because of aftermarket support, access to an extensive spare parts and dealer network, and the capability to be used for many different applications as used vehicles. The latter is probably the most important aspect as it means they have broad appeal for tradies, young drivers, farmers, families, and grey nomads. The smaller payload, seating capacity, dimensions, and towing capacity for the Tank will probably limit some of the applications that will draw in prospective used buyers, hence resale may be an issue.

    • @ValueCarsAU
      @ValueCarsAU  9 месяцев назад

I think you are trying to rationalise and explain this lopsided resale value and lack of depreciation on Toyotas vs other vehicles, while it's a completely irrational state of play. Almost a "cult" of Toyota in Australia, not directly or clearly connected to any particular reason that would be valid enough to justify this imbalance... On the rest of it, yeah, Tank 300 fell a little short compared to what I personally needed. Which is a massive shame. But, say, if GWM brings Tank 400 to our shores in 3 years - in time for me to swap the car I'm running a novated lease on right now - I'll be all in.

  • @klausschroiff4405
    @klausschroiff4405 8 месяцев назад +2

Cadogan seems to be the yellow press of car reviewers. The fact is that all 4x4s have a 100-0km/h stopping distance that is 5-10m worse than passenger cars. The worst of the bunch is the Ford Ranger Raptor - and the Tank 300 is substantially better than this one in their default configuration (the Tank has road-focused tyres which are better at this anyway). It's about the weight, the height and especially 4x4 tyres which are just crap at braking. If JC is concerned about stopping distance, he should promote a ban on offroad types.
And if you use a petrol-powered car for towing, you are doing it wrong, or you are too rich because the fuel economy is abysmal compared to diesel-powered cars - diesel provides more energy and engines produce higher torque. This shouldn't be news, either. As you mentioned - the Tank 300 is a purpose-built car, just like the Wrangler. And it's not good at a lot of things compared to other car types. Do you see the grey nomads using Wranglers for towing? No, you don't.
I don't like Chinese manufacturers for many reasons, but you have to give it to them that they are stirring up the industry with surprisingly good cars at unbelievably low prices. And the mainstream players really need a wake-up call. There are certainly reasons for the recent price increases (e.g. the weak AUD) - I'm especially looking at you, Ford - but that's like rolling out the red carpet for the Chinese.
FWIW, I once tried to use Cadogan's car broker service - if I went through with what they offered (Pajero Sport), especially for the trade-in (Santa Fe), I would have lost many thousands. That experience also summarizes JC's "substance" in my book.

Whatever you end up getting, sell it a year before the warranty expires as all modern cars are nightmares to maintain post warranty.
You might also want to Google "[insert Brand & model] problem" to get an idea of peoples real life experiences.
Another interesting idea is to ring the dealer parts dept and ask to buy a headlight/tail light/drivers door mirror/rear window. Ask how much the part is and if it's in stock.
From what I've read, most of these non-Japanese cars have little or no after sales support.
Especially with electronic control systems that have no English documentation or dealer diagnostic software !

I am in the market for a new off-road vehicle and have a base model 2018 triton dual cab with 2 inch lift, front and rear lockers, bullbar, rock sliders, steel tray and canopy and have spent over 20k on getting it to where it is. It is a very capable off-road vehicle and I have been really happy with it. I was about to put my money down on a new Pajero sport just over 61k as I have had nothing but a great experience with the Triton.
Last week I took the Tank 300 for a test drive and can attest that this car drives fantastic a bit iffy about the indicators but what you get for $51k is astonishing. I still haven’t decided and intend to get a proper test drive for a day before I commit but I am probably 90% sure I’m going to get the Tank.
As every car if you are into 4wding you are going to get a lot of aftermarket gear including a front and rear lift with better suspension so this doesn’t really worry me at all. By buying this I can add another 10k of upgrades to get to the price of the Pajero sport.
There is only my wife and me now and have sold the caravan so towing is not an issue
Resale kind of worries me but I’m 64 and can’t see me buying another 4wd after this and intend to keep the car for at least 10 years.
With all the aftermarket gear that is available for these makes it a no brainer for me.

Hi mate, I will disagree on you on this video. I agree with what JC said, the payload and the braking performance is an issue, in my eyes. And he didn't actually bash the car that bad. The only reason I'm not in a T300 is the payload, that's it. I would like to see the same braking performance with an aftermarket suspension set up and see if it improves. What JC was trying to convey, is that whenever you are in a situation where you actually do require to emergency brake, it's always going to be worst case scenario. So your comments about not treating it like a race car missed the point.
Otherwise , I actually think his review is a win for GWM and T300. What GWM are good at is customer feedback and improving without waiting for the next generation. So maybe a locally tuned suspension will be be on the cards both addressing the poor payload and braking.

Hi Dmitri. I always enjoy your videos. JC's thumbnail was unfortunate. In the video he more or less, in his abrasive style, admitted that it wasn't a bad car but for those two issues. On to those issues I have some thoughts as someone who is considering the Tank 300.
The towing shortfall doesn't bother me much. I've never had a car fitted with a tow bar. I have no interest in towing. Several other review videos have pointed out this shortcoming and although it would have been nice to have the towing ability to improve the general appeal (e.g. at resale) so be it. The problem comes if GWM dealers or tow bar fitters try to sell the car as a towing vehicle. Some customers may not be aware it is not suitable, see the size of the car and assume it is capable, never read the manual and do something dangerous. Not the car's fault mind you.
The braking. That annoys me somewhat. On a broader sense it annoys me that ANCAP do not consider braking ability in their tests. Surely the ability not to hit something is the biggest safety signal of all. If ANCAP did test stopping distance, the issue would have been flagged and GWM would have tuned their suspension. Is being airborne for a fraction of a second significant? Maybe not but it does indicate the rear wheels are light for a significant portion of the braking and the end results are quite poor in terms of stopping distance. Yes, you can drive defensively but accidents do happen and speed of impact matters, especially in a heavy, tall car, likely fitted with a bull bar. I suspect most offroad focused vehicles suffer similar problems. Utes have terrible stopping distances. I wonder if after-market suspension or a retune would mitigate the problem.

I'm curious how the Tank 300 brakes after fitting aftermarket suspension. Most people who buy a 4wd for touring and general off roading upgrade their suspension to enable a better ride and some additional ground clearance.
I'm sure the pitching forward "issue" would be addressed with a suspension upgrade.
Most 4wds come standard with highway tyres and suspension biased towards soft on-road comfort, not more rugged all-terrain tyres and suspension for off road travelling.

Hey Hannah, thanks for the word count! 😉 Well thought-out comment, pleasure to read, would like to see more from you (on other topics/videos)... Re Tank 300... I think it's a solid vehicle. I still stand by what I said - if you like the style but can't afford a Wrangler, here's your choice. Just don't expect to tow effectively or sell it 10 years later for any half-decent amount of money and you'll be good with it for a long time.

  • @RodneyW
    @RodneyW 10 месяцев назад +1

The towing capacity limitations (2.55 t GVM, 2.15 t kerb weight, 2.5 t towing capacity, which would produce a 250kg towball download weight - plus 20-35kg for the towbar itself, leaving ~120kg for passengers and luggage) are real. GWM provide these specifications, yet advertise the Tank as a tough vehicle capable of taking what people will throw at it. However these limitations suggest that the frame of the vehicle is not as tough as promoted.
Similarly, the braking issue John discusses is not a matter of performance car expectations. It is about the stability of a vehicle in an emergency. The lifted/lightly loaded rear wheels mean that the vehicle will not respond well in a "brake and swerve" emergency.
Notwithstanding the "5 star" ANCAP safety rating, the Tank is ranked as "weak" for head and chest protection of a rear-seat passenger in a frontal offset collision.
By the way - if you follow John - you will know that he has been equally (if not more) vociferously critical of the Jeep Wrangler - particularly for its tendency to rollover in a partial frontal offset collision test.

If you're buying a 4wd for touring, and not towing a caravan, and getting to places that a 2wd car cant get to, and run it into the ground, then the Tank 300 is great value.

Gday Dimitri. Good to catch up with you again. I've watched a number of JC's presentations and certainly do not completely agree with what he says. I take it all with a pinch of salt. I have not driven a Tank 300 or even got close to one yet. Seeing your reviews and many others, it comes across as a great, good value vehicle. GWM make a good quality product. I own a 2021 Haval H6 Ultra and cannot fault it at the moment. The resale value may not be that great but I can assure you after owning Jeep GC and 4 Land rovers, their value is not good either. I read somewhere that the GWM sales have gone past Kia in the last couple of months. I'll follow it up and post.
Okay the towing capacity of the Tank 300 is not that great but buyers should do their research first to see what they're buying. As for the braking test. There are many vehicles that have a similar problem, just look at some of the utes and small SUV's on the market.

Hey Chris. I still think that if you buy and own GWM vehicle for a long time (rather than re-sell in 1-2 years like I've been doing), you'll be absolutely fine. Braking issues for a "box on wheels" are to be expected. Towing? Well, not all cars are built the same and this one costs a lot less than some of those that do tow well. If Tank 300 had more space inside, i.e. the body was longer, I'd buy it and keep it for a long time.

Dimitri. Hello and I must say I enjoy your content and delivery style. After watching your positive clips on Tank 300, I am surprised to hear you decided not to buy one based on resale value, correct me if I am wrong. It leaves me to think that you do not believe the Australian market will accept it despite many great reviews including yours. The other point I'd like to make is the equivalent Toyota is about $30k more expensive. Factoring in a pessimist depreciation on the Tank and investing the $30K you need for a Toyota at say 4% pa over the life of ownership, i would say there isn't much in it. Is there something else I've missed like you wish to tow your house to dingo creek. Hello, thank you for the comment and you make very sensible and valid points... Yes my decision not to buy Tank 300, in a nutshell, is based on - 1). the recent hit of 25% depreciation of a GWM vehicle after 1 year (can't fathom another one), 2). Tank 300 is *truly* too small inside for my in-car camping plans, 3). GWM electronics including ELK I absolutely hate is still there..., 4). Other usability elements that are not good (watch my recent translated 10k in Tank 300 review. These are the main 4 points. You're right, some of the financial long-term saving might "not be real". But we always make (sometimes flawed, yes) decisions based on what we have experienced and know RIGHT NOW. I'm sure you'd agree?

They are high in demand (low depreciation) are based on decades old proven technology (bullet proof reliability) and there is an unlimited number of aftermarket parts for modification available. I have seen video's of the Tank 300 , how they get abused and taken to the max of their capabilities and I can see why how this can form a threat to existing 4WD car makers. To be fair I think you can always find a flaw in any product but you also need to look at how you as a consumer will use it. Thanks for putting up the video

Completely agree mate, and thank you for expressing an intelligent point of view here. Yes, Chinese car makers listen (some of them, like GWM, anyway...) and improve. The only problem I'm seeing with them right now on the market is their attempt to come too close on the pricing of their vehicles to Japanese and other rivals. This attempt is bound to fail, at least in Australia, due to how our local buyers think. The rest of it - yes, they'll improve, like Koreans did in their time. And Tank 300 is a great example of a vehicle that's much cheaper but not much worse than it's direct competition.

I personally have refused to watch JC content on the Tank 300 as you just know from get go he's going to bag it out, with all it's good features/points he'll just bag it out.
I did watch the video he acquired his content from.
When I tried to put the braking issue into prospective, the reply was I was trying to justify GWM Tanks poor quality.
    No.
GWM have fitted the Tank with Rotors, Calipers & Pads that grip the front well enough to lift the rear, thats seriously good brakes. The std. Mitchelin rubber obviously grips well also.
Other comparisons show the Tank 300 stopping in a shorter distance and time than competitors under same braking on same surface.
My point was, no one emergency braking as demonstrated is going to be concerned that the rear wheels are momentarily off the road surface. If you have left your braking this late, you'll be focused on what you're going to hit and if you'll get hurt or survive the impending impact.
The only true scenario I can see this being an issue is on an open highway at speed and a Kangaroo hops infront of you. Certainly brake as hard as required to keep control, do not swerve, you may loose control, strike the roo at reduced speed.
To some this is insensitive but the alternative is far worse. What is the point of you swerving into the path of another vehicle, or losing control and crashing, worse scenarios, rolling and said roo bounds off whilst you and your passengers are injured.
I can imagine after all that occured you're going to say, oh shit the wheels lifting caused that.
No, just drive to your abilities, the cars ability and always with consideration the cars, trucks, bikes, fauna around you may cause you to utilise emergency braking, just keep it in control.

I agree with Cadogan in the sense that the Tank 300 handling characteristics are something that the engineers need to address. If they don't fix this issue over time then his complaints are on point.
Here in India it appears the only Chinese vehicles around are a MG which looks like an oversized HS. Could be a cooperation with TATA I think which means there will be many more to come. No other Chinese brands at all. The passenger car market is dominated (probably 90%) by Maruti Suzuki, 4WD mostly Mahindra.

Hey, I didn't know you've left our shores yet! Hope life is treating you well mate. Yes Indian market would be very different from any other, and they probably can monopolise and self-contain it given the high population and low average income if you consider importing pretty much any brand (unless it's rather cheap, like MG). Just common sense-based guessing on my part.

Thank you for your honest and informative opinion. I must however point out that no one has considered one of Johns most important points regarding Tank 300. That being parent company attitude towards consumer complaints. Having owned another “cheap” alternative to a 4x4 that had multiple issues which were NEVER properly addressed by the manufacturer I must support his conclusions on the brand in general and the Vehicle in particular.

Am I alone in noticeing the established and paid car review guys are not living in the real world and have been spoilt with free use of vehicles and have no sense of the value for money your average Joe is looking for (especially in today's economy) John and many other car review guys bash GWM and other car manufacturers attempting to provide Ozzie's a fair deal. It's possible in my opinion the main players in vehicle sales have buttered up, paid, taken to the strippers etc as now some of their car reviews sound insincere and in the TANK case dishonest. I've unsubscribed to any car review channel that gave a selective bias review as that's un Australian mate.

Mate I don't disagree with your general sentiment. I do believe that majority of mainstream media auto-review outlets are a "sell-out" (of sorts, in any case). JC however is not really a "sell-out" by definition. I agree with you that John often overplays issues with cars BUT it is impossible to overplay the importance of wheels coming off the road under heavy braking.
Yes; we should always drive defensively but all modern cars have ABS because there will be one second in the next five years when you have to hit the brakes very hard. If the car is not good enough to cope with that one second, then it should not be on the road. No price, cuteness, off-road ability or any other feature will make up for that one second when a kid runs onto the road.

Dave, I don't disagree that wheels coming off the road etc are a bad thing. But a lot of people miss the point I'm trying to make. Oh, and don't forget most trucks of various shapes and sizes while you're at it.
