How volleyball players should land after attacking a ball (is it 1 leg or 2?)

  • I hear all the time from coaches that volleyball players should never be landing on one leg. And they make it seem like it is a big deal. This is simply not true (kind of like the wrist snap myth)!!! They have not dug deep enough into the biomechanics of the jump and landing to fully understand that at certain times volleyball athletes are FORCED to land on one leg.
The problem is when an athlete lands on one leg and does not have sufficient strength or the control to properly decelerate. It is also a big problem when a weak athlete with hypermobile knees (much more common in the women’s game) lands with their leg very straight (knee locked out).
In this video we cover how volleyball players should be landing and 3 exercises that help build strength, technique and the stabilization patterns to land safer on one leg.
Discover how The Vert and Strength Optimization Program is helping volleyball athletes gain 3+ inches on their Spike Touch and getting STRONGER (intelligently) in less than 90 days.

Super helpful video. Thanks for breaking it down! Researching landing mechanics after an ACL injury. Really don't want to ever have that happen again, so I need to learn how to land and decelerate properly. Thanks again!

I used to land on one leg (left) but after I blew out my knee, I am working to land on 2 since my left leg is a risky one.

Does this apply to beach volleyball as well? Since the jumping technique is a little different. Great video btw Coach!

Yes you often land on 1 leg in beach as well. In both indoor and beach you need to be able to decelerate the landing well. The sand in beach helps reduce the impact the landing... less impact on the knees

Do you have a video that talks about the differences between a two arm drive versus a split arm drive.? Is one better/recommended over the other.?

Two arm drive is almost always better when attacking. The one exception is when attacking a slide
