Wow! You are a great teacher! I saw those templates at quilting stores in my area, but I had no idea on how to use them. Now I do! And, as for the upside down way of quilting, what a wonderful idea! I never would have thought of doing it that way! You gave this "confident beginner" encouragement, to try new things! Thank you for making my day much brighter!
Hi Laura. I hope you are having a blessed day. Thank you for the video. This will be very helpful for beginners. This is fantastic information as quilting can be very intimidating. It’s one thing to piece a quilt top, but it’s altogether a different kind of beast when it’s time to quilt . Thank you again for this amazing video. God loves you. May God continue to bless you.
I just want to tell you how much I have learned from you. Your teaching methods fit my style of learning and I have become a better quilter because of you. Thanks so much for making these videos!
I love to hear your voice on your vdeos. You always sound so calm and unhurried. You make me feel like I could do it too. This looks a great Idea, and I can't wait to try it!
I love this method of marking! Marking is part of the reason I haven't done any free motion quilting. I'm legally blind and with all the color changes on front I can't see the marks. This will really make a big difference for me. Thank you for showing this technique Laura I really appreciate it.
Laura thank you for full explanations and showing why a step is important. My sister and I are both beginners and have learned so much from your videos. You give us the courage and enthusiasm to try it. I’m starting a table runner this week and I’m going to try the Fail Proof quilting on that one, but I see the Upside Down Backwards quilting in my future. Can’t wait to see the next video. Blessings to you.
I love the finish line series. I learn so much! Thank you for explaining processes and details so clearly, and for then following up the verbal instructions with a clear hands on video demonstration. I’m such a visual learner. I appreciate you sharing all the tips and tricks of what has worked for you and what hasn’t from your experiences. So helpful. Your voice is also very calming. Be well. ❤️
Wow, this video is super helpful, and I was delighted that you showed the Sew Fast 3-yard quilt pattern from Fabric Cafe (time stamp 11:47) using the technique. Thanks to your video on that pattern, I have the blocks done and just need to assemble the top. I had no idea how I was going to quilt it. I've seen qulting templates in stores but wasn't sure how to use them. With this "twofer" video you've given me the confidence to use a template to mark my quilt AND combine it with your upside down technique. Thank you, Laura!
Wow this is absolutely fantastic! I am a beginner quilter for about a year now and I have put together quilts Only to leave them sitting because I was afraid to do the quilting on top of them. I think I’m going to make me some more practice squares and do this method. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos.
Just dive in. Its initially intimidating, but with each quilt you will become braver & more successful. You made beautiful tops. Now you need to quilt them & enjoy them. Good luck!
I have been practicing my free motion quilting with mixed results. May need to look at some templates for that more professional look. Thank you once again for the inspiration and for not making us newbies feel inadequate.
When I use a stencil, I use a pounce pad with chalk to transfer the marks. I have found if I spray the quilt lightly with water BEFORE and AFTER I use the pounce pad, the chalk does not disappear quite so quickly. For a small project like this, it would be ideal...and FAST!
how fantastic once again!! Another tip I mentioned before to remove marks is to put one tsp of baking soda in a cup of water. Shake in a spray bottle or mister and marks disappear (as long as heat hasn't been applied first). This video reminded me that I have a book called "Quilting Back to Front" , "Fun and Easy No-Mark Techniques" by Larraine Scouler, C&T Publishing that I'll have to get out and read. Thanks for what you share!! Cheers 🇨🇦🍁💐
OMG!!! Thank you so much Laura! I have a table topper that I made years ago that has the same colors as this runner in it and have been trying to figure out for years how to quilt it on my sewing machine. It never dawned on me to do it from the back side! Duh! I am going to do this and finally I can use it on the kitchen table! You are amazing!
I made a scrappy nine patch quilt that had 30 different prints in it.. and did exactly what you said you did .. changed my marking pencils up, for each and every color of that quilt. I wish I had a plain backing to mark on..but no. I used a camoflauged print.. so, the marks woul not have shown up on the backing, either. The quilt turned out beautiful, of course, but what a chore it was to quilt it.
You make it look so easy! That was a brilliant idea you came up with! I loved that big feather stencil that you showed. I would love to see exactly how you would stitch it after it’s marked.
You are such a wonderful precise teacher!!! I love the way you show and explain all the details to us. I learned a whole lot from this video. I want to get that grippy spray for my rulers too. And I learned something about those templates too. You are definitely once talented lady. I like the design you chose for that quilt and it turned out beautiful. Thank you so very much for all that you do and how you share your knowledge and teach us along the way.... Many hugs to you... Claudia
Hello Laura - enjoyed your video so much that I would love to practice with the same template. Do you know where I might find one? I’m moving on to the Dresden Plate tutorial now. Thank you again. Deanne
Awesome! I have to admit the thought of marking and quilting from the back has occcured (in a very vague way) to me but since I'm kinda new to FMQ I thought I'd be breaking some kind of rule!🙄 I have since decided not to worry so much about rules! Thank you for sharing... especially about directional stencils!
What a really well explained process thank you so much. Im doing a Super King Quilt (my second quilt) and the Quilting club I belong to has a quilting attachment that you use your own machine to quilt it. I think your process of marking will be of great help before I load it on to attachment. Thank You If you have any other things you could recommend It would be appreciated Mo from England.
...could one use a floral backing...then free motion quilt around the print, instead of using a stencil and marking?..also, would love to see a 'bookshelf quilt'...with the technique of printing on fabric, to incorporate images of books on the quilt top as well!
Thank you for this Laura, I really enjoyed watching this video, I’m really eager to try this method of quilting,as I’m not any good at free motion designs and think this would really help me get the flow, I’m going to search out some templates and give it a try on smaller pieces first. Very interesting, can’t wait to see the next instalment.
I use crayola ultra clean washable markers. They remove in the washing machine every single time on every single fabric I have tried them on. Even if I have ironed over the marks with a hot iron. I use them for garment sewing and quilting. I have yet to find a machine washable fabric that they don't come out of.
nancy pollard, Oh thank you! What a brilliant idea! I tried some tests on Frixion pens and if they get ironed over, it makes it much harder to wash them out. They look gone, but if they get cold (NY, for example) they come back!
Hi. I really enjoy your very informational tutorial videos. I noticed in another tutorial you have a B790 with embroidery attachment. Will you be creating projects showing how to use it for simple items. I received a B790 plus for Christmas and would really like to do some cute and easy lettering and simple embroidery for gifts. I hope you could show off your talents on a cute project. Thanks
Laura, I've learned so much about quilting from your videos and appreciate you demonstrating these great new methods. I'm ready to try marking and quilting on the back side. Thinking of using a basting stitch around the perimeter instead of pins. Do you think it will work to keep quilt edges from getting folded over when I quilt? Where did you order the tulip template from please? Thank you!
Wonderful to watch and learn from you. Thank you Laura for all that you do for us. Hope all is well with you and your family. What happened to our promised tour of your new basement sewing space. have been waiting for your updates or stand still videos. Your the best. Keep safe and us entertained. God bless you all. Alda
You can use washable kids marker to do this. Take a piece of white fabric that you will use for the backing and mark all over it. Let it dry and wash it the next day. All the markings will be gone. DO NOT IRON ON THE MARKINGS AS IT MIGHT NOT COME OUT!
I love your videos. I have been sewing for 49 years. And I think only once when I was in junior high back in the 70s I took a sewing class and they talked about hand sewing needles. Is it possible for you to do a video on the different types and what they are used for for example what are sharps and what does the Number mean on the sewing package is that the length of the hand needle? I need a refresher course.
Thank you for all of your informative videos. I really enjoy watching 😊 Do you have any tips for stitch regulation when free motion quilting ? Thanking you in advance. Carol
Hi Laura, Thank you for the tutorial.Just wondering if this was filmed in your new sewing studio. Please be sure to give us a tour when it is finished. I have cut out seven easy scrub caps and made three. Love your site. God bless you.
Great way to quilt, but I'm wondering. if you have one way designs, could you flip the stencil backwards. on the back side of the quilt. that way would it possibly show right side up. on the top of the quilt. ?
Thank you for sharing. If you don't mind me asking about the teal, purple and grey quilt you showed as an example, what pattern is that or info on how to create it.
Wow! You are a great teacher! I saw those templates at quilting stores in my area, but I had no idea on how to use them. Now I do! And, as for the upside down way of quilting, what a wonderful idea! You are just the greatest. I can’t even express how much you have taught me. Thanks
Happy to hear that! Thank you
Excellent info and demonstration Laura. Thanks so much. Not many of us can afford to get them done professionally nor own a long arm machine. 🇦🇺
This has saved my Christmas. Thank you for your time and guidance in this video.
I love to hear your voice on your vdeos. You always sound so calm and unhurried. You make me feel like I could do it too. This looks a great Idea, and I can't wait to try it!

I would have never thought of doing that. It’s ingenious. Thank you so very much Laura. You are such a smart lady. I just love your tips and tricks.
I used a backing with large flowers that I quilted around, it was perfect on front!
Genius! I learn so much from your videos and love your presentations. Thank you for sharing.
I love the finish line series. I learn so much! Thank you for explaining processes and details so clearly, and for then following up the verbal instructions with a clear hands on video demonstration. So logical! Thanks for sharing this method. I got a kick out of your story about the backwards music notes too. Good reminder to do things backwards.
Never occurred to me to “flip” it over and quilt from the opposite. Wonders never cease! Thank you very much
Really fun to watch and learn from you, Laura. As usual, you've come up with a very helpful way to finish a quilt!
This is exactly the way I want to quilt my quilts. Your’s is the first video that I have been able to find on it. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!

wow this is a great tip. I will be sure to try it :)
Laura,
You are always show another awesome way to make something difficult a hole lot easier!! Thank you so very much!!
This ”on the back” Is a great idea. I’m going to try your method! Thank you for thinking outside the box.
Thank you for this. You are helping me to build my skills and my confidence. Love this idea. Thank you again..
I'm a new suscriber. Just wanted to say thank you, Laura, for educating, entertaining and inspiring.
thank you and welcome :)
Thank you for this. For us beginners, it's about the courage to do it.
Thank you sooooo much! Such a simple method, but one that not many of us will think of...myself included. 👍🏻👵🏻
Thank you sooo much! I love watching you quilt on the Q20! Gives me courage to use mine!! Cathy

I will be looking for that book thank you :)
Fantastic! I am a brand new quilter, and I will use this method on the baby quilt I am making. Very simple 42 5" squares, lol. Cute and simple.

Fabulous tutorial. You are a great teacher. Thank you so very much. I always enjoy your videos. Hugs from Louisiana.
Next practice session I'm going to try this. This is an excellent idea. So glad you had that lightbulb moment.
That was AWESOME and so informative! Encouraging to finish off my quilts that are only hand tied. Thanks!
Hi Laura where would I buy the template you used in the video?
I think I might try this with a smaller piece, probably a table mat. Great idea and video
What a great technique - Thank you! 👏🥰. Luuuove the fabric colors!!!
What a beautiful template!

Thank you for this video. I’m going to try this tonight, can’t wait. You are great ! Thank you , Caroline
This is a great technique...love learning from you !
This is a great idea! I’ve seen the stencils but I really didn’t know how to use them. Thank you for both tips!
Great hint! Very nice quilting and love the design!
Really great video Laura! Love your channel!
Thanks Laura from Australia a great tip and very useful for all ❤😃
What an amazing way of quilting your quilts. Thanks for the great tip.
Just brilliant!!!!!! Thank you for sharing your secrets with us....
This is so incredibly helpful thank you Laura !
Another great tutorial. Thank you! 😊 👍 💕
Thank you, Laura. I will try this method. Makes so much sense.
You made that look so easy and the result was lovely
How fun and easy to follow, you’re such an inspiration!
I like this stencil to free motion. I have been trying to learn but not having much luck.
Great Ah Ha moment! Thank you for passing that on your viewers!
You should put this technique in your book. It has been a game changer for me.
Laura, as always, you rock. I had never thought of this.
You are such a good teacher. Thank you.
Very helpful thank you. You make it look so easy.
Thank you so much for this video. I am looking forward to trying this technique on a small piece so I can feel it. Be well!

What a marvelous idea. Thank you for this great video.
Luv this idea looks easy and fun.
Excellent video with great ideas! Thank you. This information will be so helpful to me on my next quilt.
Thank you Laura, this is a fantastic idea...💙
do you have any suggestions if the back is printed fabric? BTW, love your videos - I always look for them
This is a great demonstration. Thank you
Ohhhh this was a nice one. Good example of can't see the forest for the trees. Ocam's razor. The best solution is usually the simplest
Very clever! Love this idea.

I always snip a little square of fabric. Scribble all over it, iron it and then machine wash and dry it before I start sewing. Especially garments.
I agree and I have tested them!
I only use the Frixion pens for crafts, the mark can come back and sometimes line a ghost mark

Just purchased a Q20 great lesson.
BRILLIANT. THANKS HEAPS FOR SHARING.
thank you for confirming what i have been thinking of for the longest time. I have tried it on a small quilt
and it is turning out beautifully.
Thank you for sharing. If you don't mind me asking about the teal, purple and grey quilt you showed as an example, what pattern is that or info on how to create it.

I love your blouse, did you make it? If so, what pattern is it?

Great idea! Thanks. Have a blessed day!
Hi, great video! I was wondering where to buy those templates?
