Well done, I use Styrkr products but recently went and had a VO2 Max test where when I got talking to the coach she gave me a recipe like yours. I have now bought 2.5kg of Bulk Maltodextrin, some Fructose and also some electrolyte powder to make it up and as you say it is so much cheaper 👍🏼
I don't waste my money on expensive gels or powders. My secret recipe is 1/3 table sugar, 1/3 Dextrose, 1/3 maple syrup, and salt. Amount of grams depends on length and intensity of the ride. Easy ride 50g/hr...bike race 100g/hr.
Is that Francis Cade under that hood 🤔 Table sugar (sucrose) is already pretty close to 1/0.8 of Glucose/Fructose (and Malto is just chains of glucose) and would likely be even cheaper.... and available anywhere. I just add salt and occasionally some bitter squash to improve the taste. You can also use soft gel pouches to put hyper concetrated doses of sugar ''syrup" in so that you can tailor the amount of water you are drinking alongside it to suit the temperature of the ride. Eg if you ram 360g of sugar syrup into a gel pouch for a four hour ride, just sip it every few minutes until 1/4 pouch an hour is going. If it's in your bottles then you can either end up drinking too much water if the ride is cooler/easier than expected because you need all 750ml or whatever to get your carb ration. Or on a hot day, getting thirsty and exceeding your gut tolerance becasue you needed the extra bottle. Fun video although im not sure it wasn't a reverse psycology advert for Styrkr 😉🤣
@@crosshaircycling7156 yes pretty sure that was Francis 😅 And no I don’t think I’ll end up being asked to do sponsored adverts anytime soon. 😬 Their bars are very nice though! 😋 although I normally just have a banana if I’m going to have a solid food source on a ride.
Even better buy a mini impulse sealer and some pouches and you can pre-pack carbs to take out with you into nice neat sealed pouches to save messing with sandwich bags etc. You can then pack them into a dose size that suits you.... eg: 30g / 40g etc and then just double up if you need more because the ride is going to be harder etc.
This recipe is great if you want something that doesn't taste very sweet, but if you have no problem with the drink being sweet I would say just use sugar. Gives you 1:1 carb ratio of fructose/glucose, and if you really want 1:0.8 just do 80 grams sugar and 10 grams maltodextrin and you are good to go.
The main idea of the 1:0.8 ratio is increasing the amount that can be absorbed. That’s why the products like beta fuel moved from 1:1 to 1:0.8. Marginal gains and all the jazz
@@petegrundy8508 well if it helps them I said they’re products are great 😬 But they’re super easy to replicate for pennies. Should have added, save a tonne of packaging too by buying in bulk.
@@michaelgraycycling no I just use straight Nuun tabs, one per bottle. I'll normally have two bottles on my road bike, one will be the drink mix, the other one will be straight water. If I'm doing a longer event or ride, I will take like a Clif bar and Aldi brand Fruit Roll-Ups with me 🙂.
Nuun and other hydration tablets contain zero carbs and are also a total rip off. As had been discussed in this video, buy bulk electrolyte powder, it is a fraction of the cost. When you see an actual serving of the powder, you quickly realise how much bulking agent is in some of these tablets. To trick you into believing your getting something for your cash.

The most expensive carb supplement I know costs about 13 Euros per 100g of cabs. But that stuff is not just maltodextrine and fructose. Does it work if you want to win a world championchip? Definitley. Do we need it? I highly doubt it.
