Absolutely! The Gi is more realistic for the street than an MMA outfit (shorts, no shoes or socks or shirt)...most people walk around in clothes that provide handles (even if the clothes can rip) - even T shirts can be bundled up quickly & easily - thank you 🙏 for this...!!
I agree completely. I have often used t shirts to choke out people (in practice obviously). I enjoy taking BJJ into a realistic setting when possible. As long as you bunch shirts up, they won't rip. Obviously every situation is different but it's not that hard to adapt BJJ techniques to fit most grappling situations.
RobDegraves we’re on the same page - I love no gi as well, but the idea that you are unable to grab anything (e.g. clothes) in a street fight is just off base, unless you’re in a Speedo in Rio. 😆
You can do no-gi techniques regardless of what you or your adversary is wearing....can't do a lapel choke on someone in a thin wife beater during the summer it will rip....

Nice video. Curious if you guys show any of these techniques with actual jackets, hoodies etc. as I’m not sure how one would need to adjust the techniques accordingly.

The Gi was developed to simulate a tougher suit like 17th century Japanese clothing. Most people don't walk around in 17th century kimonos.

Hey Stephan, I'm an amateur Muay Thai fighter and plan on doing BJJ for self defense. Is it possible to become a purple belt and just practice BJJ without having to compete? I just wanna do it for self defense not competing.
Depends on your teacher and your school's attitude towards competition. Why are you aiming for purple belt in particular? I'm a purple belt, and I only competed at the white belt level. Since then, school and life has gotten in the way and I've kind of lost interest in competing.
Well that's kind of my goal to really be proficient enought to use it in a self defense situation. You don't compete even you're a purple belt? I never thought that was possible. Seems like every school trains people for competition instead of self defense.

I play gi but gi people perform some huge mental gymnastics pretending gi chokes would be foolproof in a street fight. Yes, the other person may have a jacket but how many jackets are strong enough to not just rip?
