    I don't train with Roger Gracie, but I train with people who have trained with Roger and have been taught how he does the X-choke by people who were taught by Roger -- though, for the record, I am no expert on it. Rob got it pretty much right. From what I remember, and he doesn't always do this in competition, Roger often puts his head on the mat to stabilise his position when in the process of applying the second choking hand. Also, when applying the second choking hand he puts his thumb into the collar first and then rotates his hand around the side of the head. The thumb is almost impossible to stop because you can it insert it very low in the collar and rotating the hand around the collar after inserting the thumb in this way sweeps away the opponent's defending hand. Also, if you defend the second choking hand too vigorously, it sets up the S-mount and, by corollary, the arm bar.

    Nice, I usually don't go for collar chokes from mount because of the roll potential but I think these details will help a lot, thanks!

      I had a cross collar choke deep yesterday during class(white belt). And I got rolled over so easy! Definitely great tips and glad to learn the balance nuances.

    I love this choke. First time saw it on Demian Maia's DVD (attacking from the mount), and use it since with high percentage. He explains the principle of pushing the choking (deeper) arm with your body when you lean forward and other small details you mention also. Great work as always.

    nice video guys. You made me respect my trainer even more now. He is nowhere near gracie status but is a black belt in Judo and Sambo and was champion in the USSR in the 80s, he showed me exactly this cross choke so I always thought it kinda was a standard technic.

    this weight distribution, including how high his hips become which inevitably kills possible upa's, is legit as far as my experience goes, there is a black belt who more or less does the EXACT same idea when he cross collars me, and being he is literally as thin as a skeleton, it only made me more sensitive to the finer details I couldn't see, until now! bravo guys!!!!

    This addition im going to mention could be a shit route for this technique as I am a blue belt, but, I go for/finish this technique with almost all of my peers. I've failed several times. I finish in this exact way and have had to figure all this out through screwing up. My other way of getting that second cross grip is slightly pulling them up into me to get their head/upper back off the mat, (not to the point where you get rolled backwards), and reaching the second grip as deep into the center of their back as possible and raking as much fabric into the grip (palm down) as possible to finish; in the exact head position Rob has. I find it easier to get the second grip than the way Rob showed as people spaz out when I drop the elbow. Just my way.

    I appreciate the tip, it is notoriously hard to get these chokes. im guessing that the weight shift has to be almost the same time with the second hand going into position. the space, i mean an experienced guy, i just cant see him not bridging and shrimping out this being finished.

    Cross chokes are so hard to master. I was taught to bend the elbows and “row” back. But Gracie Humaita has taught to keep the second arm straight and lean forward - major killer

    How come your first grip is 4fingers=in? I am under the impression that on the top (mount) that thumb-in (and pinky to the right carotid on 'Stephen') is superior?
    Could yo please comment on Grip (four finger in VS thumb in) from Mount?
    Also I agree completely with all the other descriptions of mechanics.... thanks....

    recently I got into an argument with a few people on whether or not its inevitable to lose to a much much bigger opponent. could you show a few sweeps and counters to the "fat opponent that wins by smothering" and possibly bring in an experienced bigger grappler to show they can move regardless of size

      Have you checked out my 'How to Defeat the Bigger, Stronger Opponent' playlist on RUclips? Last I checked it had like 38 videos that address this topic. Hope it helps!

    • @paulglenn3396
      @paulglenn3396 8 лет назад +2

      Not bigger stronger, I saw that. I mean specifically to the Fatter opponent. Say you're 120 against a 300 lb.

    • @Mr4433
      @Mr4433 8 лет назад +2

      Eventually you will learn to avoid getting pined by the fatties in the first place, at all costs. Its really not that hard. Do not pull guard. Get good at the arm drag.

    Tightest, worst, most disgusting mounted gross choke I've ever been hit with was a double palm down grip. The guy is literally posting his weight on his forearm across your neck. I'll let you have anything you want before I let you get that lol.
