As a new player a comprehensive look at Obscuring would help so much, not only in terms of the changes but also generally in terms of the benefits of being obscured and of having the ability to remove it. I encounter so many players that try it on with (for example) removing obscuring to shoot through walls.
Found your channel after Darcy Bono mentioned you. Returning to the hobby after a long hiatus and looking forward to starting on the new killteam. Thanks for doing these beginner focused videos to help me have a decent understanding before my first game at the club.
I love Darcy Bono’s channel. I followed her Ork flesh tutorial and finally placed higher than last in the mini of the month voting at my local WH store.
Well done. A notable change (for me, at least) is that an operative can now have its APL positively modified in the middle of its activation. The Hand of the Archon pain tokens and the Legionaries’ Aspiring Champion are a couple examples.
It’s worth noting that you CAN climb the back of ruins legally, the issue is that models with 6” of movement do not have enough movement to do so legally. Some models ( like Phobos, blades of khaine, and a few others) have 7” of movement making it enough distance for a legal climb Other times some teams will get a movement boost like the Kasrkin “move fast” faction boost giving them a +1” of movement ( now total 7). Again giving them enough distance to make it a legal climb
Thanks for the vid glass, just wanted so say I’m pretty sure now that when you go on guard in ITD, you now only take the -1 to hit on point blank shots, regular shoot actions appear to be at your normal hit stat. A nice change and it makes the Hirotek circles new guard ploy for death marks much better than it would have been last edition.
I think I've figured out why the razor wire uses the "within 1 inch" phrase, and it's not for fly, it's for jump. If you can clear the razor wire from a vantage terrain with your 4" jump you don't need to pay the extra 2". Same goes for if the razor wire is under vantage terrain, which nobody would have argued about but would technically be affected without the 1" clause. (When an operative flies, it is removed and then replaced within its movement range, so it doesn't interact with terrain at all.)
Afaik that has been removed. At least it says in the rulebook that cover is provided by terrain (friendly operatives are not mentioned in the cover section). That would definitely be a notable change imho...
Is it still the case that free actions taken outside of the model's activation bypass limits? For example, free dashes at the Strat Ploy step or during another model's activation (Goat leader's dash, Kasrkin dash Strat Ploy) didn't prevent the target model from using a dash during their own activation.
Regarding Heavy Terrain connected to Vantage on the Obscure Rule 13:20, what happens if both operatives are on the same height (both of them are on vantage point of the same height) and there's a Heavy Terrain in between them that is connected to the vantage point either of them is on? For example Operative A is shooting Operative B, both of them are on the 'second floor' of their respective buildings. Operative A's vantage terrain has a half-destroyed high wall connected to its the vantage terrain he is on. Shouldn't that count as Obscuring?
For counteract you can shoot even if you shot during your activation right? because you are doing this 1AP action outside of your normal activation? Also am I correct in thinking that an Astartes can shoot a silent weapon during a counteraction because they are allowed to counteract even with a conceal order and silent weapons allow you to shoot while having a conceal order? This seems very powerful.
4:56 speaking of back of ruins and ladders, can they be combined? Can you use a ladder on the back of ruins in order to get over even with a big model?
Clarification on climbs: you're only rounding to the next full inch increment if the height and/or cover on the vantage to be climbed is at a partial inch increment because all moves are min 1" correct (4.25" height requires 5")? In which case in think patrician eldar enthusiasts can make the climb and legally sit on vantage due to their 7" move abd snaller base
Hi all, I have a question that came up during my first match yesterday. If an operative on the killzone floor is within 2" horizontally of an enemy model on vantage terrain, but outside of 2" vertically, is that enemy model a valid target if it has the conceal order? Normally if you are within 2” of eachother, intervening terrain is negated. But I couldn’t find anything that references vertical distance into this equation/
To clarify, measuring where you are eligible to climb from is taking your base as a 3d object (which is about 3mm high). But when making the climb, your base must clear the platform and so you measure from the floor, yes.
One thing I'm still not clear on - does vantage still give light cover if the operative is being shot by another operative on vantage (ie at the same height)? I don't see anything in the rules clarifying that?
I mention this in the vantage point section, but no, your targeting lines need to interesect the vantage. It doesn't just provide a random aura of light cover. It's ALWAYS targeting lines
Definitely think Razor Wire could do with a wording tweak. The description in the book of moving "within" really made me think of it like someone moving near barbedwire and getting snagged, hence the cost. Your explanation makes sense but wasn't what I understood from the rules.
So if the wall is greater than 3.5” the ladder is useless? Or can I use the ladder to pay for the first 3” of climb for a 1” tax and then just climb as normal from there. So if the wall is 5” high with a ladder against, it would cost 3” to climb to the top?
Sorry if this is a silly question: Miniature facing matters when drawing line of sight? Or do miniatures heads have a 360° vision? (This would mean a space marine can see a valid target from the side of his head or the back of his head through his backpack? 🤔
@@GlassHalfDead so maybe, just maybe... you need to measure 3" to the planform you want to climb on, but you can go "around" stuff if your move stat will let you?
Im surprised that 14:00 works like this. Are you sure? I mean that for me it is not connected directly its only the same terrain. Im a bit confused....
Climbing seems very counterintuitive. Do they state that all models are considered to have climbing gear now? Just floating up to the vantage point seems daft. Not being able to combine reposition and dash during a climb is really going to mess with 5” movement models.
@@GlassHalfDead Thanks for bringing it up here also. Movement around terrain is one thing that always trips us up. I play kt very much casually so skipped the part 2 vid (for now). I've played a handful of games of each of the prior 2 editions. Hoping this one will get more plays due to it being more approachable. I need to figure out how to get the play time down to something that feels reasonable (about an hour) ... 3-4 hr just makes it hard to play it very often and is also self-fulfilling due to forgetting rules if you don't play often and making the game take longer....

You dont have to measure from the top of the base (the diagrams in the core book actually use the bottom). Regardless of measuring from top or bottom, it shouldnt matter and you're not actually distance. It's still going to be a 4" move.

I don't think the team rules as they are now will survive more than 3 months. Too many changes at once, it will be a total mess. Maybe after the first wave of patches and erratas we can start talking about what is good and what is not, because for now it's a limbo of rules that just won't be valid very very soon. They are not worth taking seriously.
That whole "not a legal move" interpretation of climbing seems super rules lawyery and something "that guy" would use to win games hed otherwise lose. The fact that you went on even to give the simplified, more realistic explanation of it being just a tax made the entire concept twice as confusing and the first bit about legal moves entirely unnecessary. Just plop the model down on the other side, the human hair width difference really doesnt matter.
