The truth about the Harley Benton HB 35 Plus in close up

  • A subscriber recently asked me to do some close up shots of my Harley Benton HB35 Plus so that he could check out the finish for himself. Done. Since these guitars are sold online by Thomann and are the subject of lots of videos it’s probably helpful to see ho they look in real life. In this video I run my close up camera over my HB35 Plus concentrating on the areas where some owner have complained about issues. Hope you find this useful if you are considering buying a Harley Benton.
    Cheers!

    I have one of these and an SC550 ii and found them both to be great. Certainly amazing value for money and good players

    Excellent review mate. You covered all the important points there. I have one of these and completely agree with you. They are great guitars, irrespective of price.

    HB guitars can indeed be quite well-done, especially (as you noted) "For the money". The main hazard with guitars at that price point is that the quality control isn't that consistent across the board. More often than not, though, I've found any problems to be quite fixable.
    I have a Lemon Drop SC450 Plus (the LP style) that I bought a couple of years ago. It had two problems on arrival: 1) The tone knob caps - one had a chunk cracked out of it and the other was missing altogether; 2) The finish on the upper frets was pretty rough. Problem #1 was solved by shelling out $10 at a local shop for a set of Gibson speed knobs - I probably would have done that anyway as the "top-hat" knobs aren't easy to grab hold of. Problem #2 - I gave the frets a gentle going-over with a fine-grade sanding block and steel wool, and they slicked up quite nicely. I also gave the fretboard a good cleaning with a cloth and lemon-oil; I gave it 2-3 such treatments, set the action to my taste, and it's played like butter ever since.

      Yes the variable QC thing does seem to be the catch. Maybe I’ve just been lucky with both HB’s I’ve bought. Thanks for your comment

    I almost bought one of these guitars. I have been looking at it for three months now. I still like this guitar very much. But HB caught my eye with another model I hadn't payed much attention to. The model name starts with an A, Aeola or something. It's a semi hollow, single cut with some upgrades. So, back to the drawing board...

      I'm sure the model you go for will be of the same quality as the HB. Enjoy!

    I bought one back in January this year. Had to adjust the intonation a bit but otherwise it was very playable from the start and I was enjoying playing it a lot..! Until today! Somehow suddenly there'no signal coming from the guitar so there must be something wrong with the wiring (no idea what happened, I didn't drop it or anything). Ordinarily this shouldn't be such a big problem... but I have no idea how to get to the wiring! There's no backplate, and taking off the scratchplate indeed didn't reveal any easier access to the wiring... if anyone has any ideas on how to get inside to do some soldering, please lmk. Major design flaw from what I can tell, because I don't see any way of getting into save from actually taking apart the guitar which I suspect may cost close to as much as the guitar itself...

      Must admit - though I've had no sucjhproblems with mine and I use it daily - I have sometimes wondered how the hell I'd get in there if anything did go wrong. To be fair I believe all semi hollow bodied guitars have this problem. I watched a video on this a while back and it basically involved unbolting all the knobs, removing the pick ups and pulling everything out through the pickup holes. Very finicky. Hope you can get it sorted - could be as simple as a loose wire on the jack socket?

    Great video! What’s the difference between Plus and the cheaper Vintage series?

    • @thecreativeguitarlounge
      @thecreativeguitarlounge  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! I'm not 100% sure but would guess its just a question of finish detail. I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio for example: It has no edge binding and a single colour (black) finish. It cost about half what I've paid for other LP's I've owned which did did have those decorative features but sounds no different - maybe even better as I spent the savings on a nee bridge pickup and a recently a new wiring loom.

      @@thecreativeguitarlounge I had a look; Plus has laurel fretbord, vintage has amaranth. Any idea what difference that makes?

    • @thecreativeguitarlounge
      @thecreativeguitarlounge  7 месяцев назад +1

      I’d guess it’s a cheaper material but in terms of playability/feel/durability - no idea.

    I just got one a few days ago. Same color.
    The action is way too high, and the strings are not regular as mentioned in Thomann's description, but light if not extra-light.
    The neck PUP, in its humbucker version at least, is a bit too bassy for me, I guess I'll play mostly on both PUPS at the same time for rythm parts, and on the sole neck PUP (single coil version) for solos.
    I'll lower the strings a bit but not too much, as I intend to use that guitar mostly for rhythm and jazz stuff.
    I dont' intend to bend the strings, so I guess I won't change the tuners (that I'd do for guitars with Fender trems and 12-strings).
    I'll switch the (extra-)light strings to a set of custom-light ones, and then probably switch to a regular set. Why not on plate-wound strings ?

      I guess there are some little variations in how these are set up before despatch. Mine had gauge 10 strings which are fine with me. The action was a little high and needed lowering for my style. I’d expect to do that with any new guitar. Tuners have been fine so far. I also find the neck pup a little dark but my Gibson Les Paul is the same. I’ve found some nice combinations of both pups and coil taps. Still loving the guitar. Cheers!

    But how much does it weigh? Harley Benton has a sideline building boat anchors.

      Cheers. No I just looked into to HB35 Plus at the time. I also bought an HB Jaxx bass. I'm considering one of their Telecasters too. The Aeolus looks very nice I must say.

      Yeah I must admit I was a little worried about getting a semi hollow bodied guitar delivered from Germany to the Uk in basically a reinforced cardboard box. As long as the couriers handle them properly it works though.@@markmarant8440
