Join me on a free passive income training I’m doing this month - learn how to actually build passive income 💸 join here: erikakullberg.... (erikakullberg....)
    From the Department of Transportation:
Sometimes, when an airline asks for volunteers to give up their seats and fly on a different flight, there are not enough volunteers. When this occurs, the airline will select passengers to give up their seats. This is called “involuntary denied boarding” or “bumping.”
    For domestic flights:
0 to 1 hour arrival delay - no compensation
1 to 2 hour arrival delay - 200% of one-way fare (airlines may limit the compensation to $775 if 200% of the one-way fare is higher than $775)
Over 2 hour arrival delay - 400% of one-way fare (airlines may limit the compensation to $1,550 if 400% of the one-way fare is higher than $1,550)
For more information go to the Department of Transportation website
and look at Involuntarily Giving Up Your Seat (Bumping).

So here is an interesting question.
It says that the airlines can limit the amount if it is over $1550.
A lot of first class seats can be more than $1550 (sometimes by a lot).
If you get bumped from one of those are you just out of luck?
You get your measly $1550, a big headache, a lot of wasted time and possibly not even the first class seat that you paid for on the next flight (if those seats are all booked.) And… thats it?

The first time I'd encountered the term "overbooking" was from american RUclipsrs, and for a couple of years I couldn't wrap my mind around how is it possible, why, and how is it even legal. You're paying full ticket price for booking a seat, fully refundable tickets are rare, the airline gets at the very least 30% even if you cancel well in advance.

Incorrect, almost every airline overbooks their flights. It would be foolish not to. Flights are often overbooked by 30+ seats, and usually, no one gets bumped. While it sucks for passengers who occasionally get denied boarding, the cost savings for airlines are huge and help keep ticket prices lower.

    • @TheJACKedViking

Southwest does not overbook flights, they’re pretty straight forward about that.
What can happen on Southwest is an oversale which occurs when there’s an equipment swap to a smaller aircraft due to maintenance, etc or for weights & balance. You’ll still get compensated for IDB in the event you run into an oversale situation.

Gate Agent: So we're bumping you off the flight, you can either voluntarily get bumped, and get a $600 voucher, or not volunteer.
Me (confused): Ok... so what happens if we DON'T volunteer?
Gate Agent: We then have to pay you 4x the cost of your ticket.
    Me: I DO NOT volunteer!

I’m a pilot and usually they would already book you on the next flight with free upgraded seats to make up for it equivalent or even more value than doing this. Another thing is that people usually get into fights instead of exploring options to make up for this and the reason why the overbooking is a thing is because many people buy the seats and never show up so there’s last minute tickets that are very cheap. A couple things. This only applies to flights departing from the US. Airlines are required to inform you of your rights in writing per DOT. In addition, being denied a flight this way is incredibly rare. For example, Delta had it happen only twice in 2022. Finally, there is a whole bunch of times when you may be denied boarding where the airline does not owe you compensation. Its really a very specific situation where these compensation rules kick in and it almost never happens. Usually someone will volunteer to be bumped after negotiating a deal with the airline.

It's not a secret. It's right on The Dept. of Transportation's website. Involuntary bumping isn't that common. The airlines usually get enough volunteers before it gets to that point. Don't get too excited about cashing in.

The only thing that would get me to volunteer for a same day later flight would be an upgrade to first class. Because if first class isn't sold out on the later flight, they are going to be giving those seats to other people on that flight anyway. So it's not really costing them anything extra to do it.

Also, remember People that they might also be responsible depending on how long to put you up in a hotel to give you food vouchers and if your luggage is also stuck somewhere to also compensate you for clothing, and what not make sure to read the terms.
Also, many banks and credit cards and insurance also covers which you can double dip in in a lot of circumstances had a 12 hour delay before in Denver because they made us miss the flight and then the following flight was overbooked so not only did my spouse Myself get back nearly $4000 in ticket fees but we also got put up in a hotel and food vouchers and for our luggage Total about five grand and luckily for us didn’t mess up anything schedule wise for us since it was coming back from vacation so all in all with the additional almost $2000 in insurance with our travel policy we got a total of $6000 that essentially paid for our initial tickets And our entire vacation with about $700 left over in profit with about 15 hours of inconvenience and hours of inconvenience so so completely worth it

Happened to me with an intercontinental flight with Delta. They bumped me off a business class seat. First they said my travel company did not really book me for that flight, then when I complained, they said I was late at boarding !! I was there before any other passenger even showed up at the gate. And that was that. Had to get up at 4am next morning to catch the rebooked flight. Arrived in London one day late as a result. They never took responsibility. Thank you, Delta.

Also, they will do anything possible to avoid paying you. It's literally a last resort and the airport always offers the lowest possible compensatio, which isnalso legally binding. If you accept the compensation offered at the airport, you can't request for more comp directly with rhe airline.

Speaking of greyhound buses, I took one home from UC Santa Cruz to Los Angeles LA early 1980s and as we were coming down the 101 Freeway we stopped at Soledad. And I’m thinking please don’t let any guys get on that just got out of prison… Sure enough 2 guys all tatted up… Clearly gang members get on the bus and guess who they sit next to. It was like this guy had ESP the first thing he says to me is, “man I know somebody’s got some good weed on this bus and as soon as he saw my face he knew. So I figured, better to be friendly and give it up rather than engaging so I told him he was welcome to the small amount that I had and I passed it to him. Little did he know that what I was really guarding was in my bag. Anyway to my surprise and horror…l This guy twists up a joint and start smoking it. He’s been out of prison about 10 minutes and he smoking pot on a private bus. He’s trying to pass it to me and I’m telling him I don’t want any of it and about two minutes later the driver slams on the brakes he walks back to me and he says, “who is smoking?“ And without blinking I said I don’t know I was napping. Then he looks at the prisoner and says who is smoking and the prisoner says I don’t know Smokey the bear which the bus driver did not find the music and then the bus driver said look I know you just got out of prison so I’m gonna give you a break normally I call the police and they will go through this whole bus and I’m thinking oh my gosh if that happens I’m dead… But will just let it go as long as that’s the last of it do we have an understanding… Everybody said yes and that was the end of that. The whole way home the guys trying to recruit me and of course I didn’t wanna offend inflation clean the mall he was trying to find out where I live my name etc. and of course I gave him three cancel and I was so happy that when we got to my stop he was sleeping because I was really worried he was going to get off at my stop and ask for a place to stay etc. as I got off the bus… The bus driver got off with me and he said, “just so you know, I saw you pass it to him. But I also smelled your bag when you walked in and so that’s why I didn’t call the police. Now I know I was a hardass on the bus but how about sharing a little?“ I don’t know why I believed him but I did so I just reached down grab something for him jammed it in a brown paper bag handed it to him and said have a nice day and that was that what a day
