Oil is cheap, engines and critical components are NOT. So no, no,no. First oil change around 1k and then every 5K or every 6 month, whichever comes first. Especially in Toyota engines. This is per many, including mechanics like AMD (the car care nut) and he explains why. Go and watch his video.

Toyota mechanic here. Per Toyota any vehicle that has 0w-20 oil as an option (5w-20 or 5w-30 as standard) for the engine requires an oil change every 5k miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Any engine that only uses 0w-20 requires an oil change every 10k miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, assuming you meet the driving requirements for 10k intervals. That being said.... Change your fking oil before that if you want the engine to last. You wouldn't believe the sludge that builds up in the engine if you don't.

The engineers and scientists only exist to get your car out of warranty and to meet emission standards. Plus the cost of ownership. They couldn’t care less how long your car last. Go read any real world results. It’s the same as lifetime fluids. If you don’t care whether or not your care last more than 100,000 miles then you dont really need to do much at all. If you’re planning on keeping your care to 300,000 miles oil changes and fluids matter. The oil can actually last pretty long but it’s the metals that stay in your oil and the oil filter that actually doing the most problems. You’re confusing the lifetime of oil verses what the oil keeps circulating in your engine. The fact that you’re trusting the car dealers is amazing. I suggests you go check the car care nut channel out. You’re really showing you don’t know much about maintenance and longevity.

As stated repeatedly in this video dealer technicians are NOT scientists, nor engineers. Popular YT dieties don't make your Toyota owner's manual invalid. RUclipsrs don't make Toyota and Mobil 1 work, actual REAL scientists and engineers do. But FEAR will have one changing oil at 5k... and where does the magic number 5k even come from... oh yeah feelings (fear) again... why not 2k or 1k? Why not 500 miles "just to be safe"...? I’ll see if I can find the video of an actual Toyota engineer in the factory in Japan telling everyone if you want your car to last to change your oil every 3,000 miles. So you just refuse to look at oil analysts test I guess. I have oil test on all of my cars done every 5k from black stone labs. You keep calling out all other RUclipsrs. You’re a RUclipsr spewing uneducated content while talking like an idiot for some reason. Just cause some cars make it on little maintenance isn’t proof of anything. More didn’t make it. The actual oil today can easily go 20k miles that’s not the problem. Like I said before it’s the metal wear that keeps circulating in your engine. By 5,000 miles your oil filter is done catching all the metals. For some reason you keep going back to a child’s argument of fear and feelings which has nothing to do with the argument. I dont really care how you treat your car. You’re just a RUclipsr doing the same thing you’re calling out other RUclipsrs out for. How about you get an actual engineer on your channel to have a discussion. Plus nice click bait video to get views and comments.

Great content, true that modern oil will remain stable for extended miles. According to my auto tech instructor its not the oil that degrade the problem is the blow by gases from the pistons that dilute the oil over time that will slowly destroy your engine. Changing the oil is cheap insurance compared to changing the engine. This is the reason I change my oil earlier than the manufacture recommended intervals.

I'm not sure we can draw the conclusion that the manual/manufacturer recommended interval is the end all be all. It is a race to the bottom in ownership costs for manufacturers to win comparison tests in Consumer Reports etc. and an easy way to reduce ownership costs over long term is extended maintenance intervals. More often than not powertrain engineers are not recommending 10k intervals but they make their way to the manual, a result of bean counters and being adequate for calculated lifespans of vehicles. A similar example is the "lifetime" transmission fluid in the GX 460 prior to 2023. I'm sure some testing was done which likely found the fluid adequate for the lifetime of the car (200k per manuf maybe?) but clearly it is causing issues in early year GX's >150k miles where the fluid was never addressed because it wasn't listed as a maintenance item and now grenading transmissions. Lexus has now updated the manual to list trans fluid as a maintenance item but that doesn't help the owners of out of warranty 460s who heeded the initial [incorrect] guidance from the supposed expert engineers. And so on and so on... the motivation is there for the manufacturers to reduce maintenance item but until they are willing to offer 400k powertrain warranties I will take their recommendations with a grain of salt.
Mobil1 markets oil that can last X # of miles under certain conditions but doesn't guarantee it in engines under unique load/operating conditions so I also don't know I would trust the marketing material on the oil cartons.

The recommended mileage for a Toyota oil change can vary depending on the specific model and year of your Toyota vehicle, as well as the type of oil used. However, as a general guideline, most Toyota models require an oil change near you every 5,000 to 7,500 miles under normal driving conditions.
For newer Toyota models, the recommended interval for an oil change may be longer, with some models indicating that an oil change is necessary only once every 10,000 miles or more. However, it’s important to check your Toyota owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended oil change interval for your specific vehicle. The team at our Toyota service center will be happy to review your car to determine the ideal intervals for oil changes

So dude on this video talks about oil life:
    ruclips.net/video/l-zDt9FGJi8/видео.html
First, this was a paid trip to Mobil 1. So consider the inherent bias. Two, it's still a valid video. M1 takes stock vehicles and runs the piss out of them for oil change intervals well beyond the manufacturer limits. They use stock vehicles, drive them for something like 100,000 miles, measuring everything, do a whole tear down and grading. And yes, the oils last as long as they claim. For everyone 10,000 people who say, "Well my engine gets oil changes every 3000 and it's got 200,000 on it now" there's another slew who did exactly that and their engine didn't last. None of these were oil-related. They were unrelated events. The oil was not the fail point. Some other component in the engine, or just shit luck, was the reason for failure.
There's science, and then there's cletus and cooter anecdotes. I have no time for cletus and cooter anecdotes. They're meaningless. Everyone loves to throw out, "But car makers want you to buy a car every 100,000 miles so why would they make it last?" Even Chevy shitboxes are built for a 150,000 mile life. That's the stated service life of the components in their engines. If the oil makers are so nefarious and in cahoots with car makers to get you to buy new cars every 7 years, why do they make a 20,000 mile oil? Shouldn't they make a 3000 mile oil instead? The 20,000 life mile oil is maybe $2 more per 5 quarts than the less fancy stuff. Why would oil makers design an oil that attacks their bottom line when they could easily make an oil that lasted far less?
And how much margin is there in a new vehicle vs how much margin is there in a vehicle that stays on the road for 300,000 miles but still needs parts, service, gets accessories, carries the brand reputation on it? Let's use a little common sense here.

  • @Teddy_Morrison

It's more than just the oxidation of the oil. There's also the additive package in the oil that gets depleted over time and the fuel and other contamination that gets into the oil from the blow by that leaks past the piston ring.

Yes you are draining and wasting synthetic 0W-20 engine oil at a 3K-5K change, oil that is still functioning well within engineered specification! The oil itself is not the argument for following a severe driving condition oil change schedule. The issue is with oil contamination. Engine wear particles between 2-20 microns in size pass through the oil filter. Short driving trips of less than 5 miles especially in cold weather allows for the accumulation of water and fuel, think internal oxidation!
