Every time I see the Silent Drill Platoon I get chills because it demonstrates multiple core fundamentals of the U.S. Marine Corps along with U.S. military in general, but it was disappointing to see no excitement from the crowd as they have just witnessed such a stunning and perfect performance.

THB, as a European, I never considered this as a show. As something you cheer. I always thought the deeper meaning of the drill demands silent respect. After all, you don't see guardsmen smiling, do you? I thought it's more related to changing guards at Arlington (seen it live various times) than a circus. I guess I was wrong.
And BTW, I am from a former communist country (Slovenia - ex Yugoslavia), I did serve the army just as many conservative Americans have. As a paratrooper, no leg here :). I am also a liberal. And I tell you. It has nothing to do with appreciating The silent drill at all.
Parts of being a soldier have always resonated with me. But not all people are the same.
      Take care, guys.

Times Square is thrilled to have the Silent Drill Team. But they operate in total verbal silence, Times Square will never have silence to appreciate the team. An early 1970's film I saw in boot camp was shot properly, it slayed us. I was at tears (not safe, usually, in USMC boot camp).

    USMC!!
The rifles: so clean you could do surgery with them.
The dress: best looking attire on the planet.
This platoon: a symbol of excellence - aside from their skills as jugglers, acrobats, drummers, and showmen, any one of these could shoot your eye out at 500 yards and take your city with 50 men.
The corps: the tip of the spear, the toughest sonsofbitches on earth.
Addendum: If you ever get the chance, pick up one of these rifles, feel the weight, then think about how easy these guys make this look.

People didn’t cheer out of respect you know that right? It varies from crowd to crowd. I prefer when crowds are silent, shows reverence to the team.

I noticed cheering and clapping at eight occasions, with lighter clapping at four other times; after each major "element." That's on par with all the other videos of of the Silent Drill Team I have seen.

When I was in Boot & saw them on M.C.R.D. (San Diego), it was pleasing to see the awestruck people with their jaw in their laps. Only one thing better than the smell of gun powder in the morning, that's the cheers of the female civilians in the audience! Oh & of course plenty of HOORAHS & Semper Fi's to go around!
