- Henry Armstrong
(Henry Melody Jackson)
("Homicide Hank")
Record 149-21-9 (100 KO)
Armstrong was dynamite in a small package; He was a high pressure, non-stop fighter who threw punches from the beginning to the end of every round; His goal was to knock his man out - if he didn't manage that, he certainly battered him thoroughly
Henry held three world titles - Welterweight, Lightweight, Featherweight - in a period when only eight weight divisions existed; At the beginning, his performance was rather good but not sensational; However, when he hit stride in the mid 1930s, Armstrong was as good as anyone has ever been; During 1937, he was 27-0 with 26 knockouts; In 1938, he was 14-0 with 10 knockouts; From December, 1936 until September, 1940, Henry compiled a 59-1-1 record (51 KOs) competing against the best in the world
Charley Rose ranked Armstrong as the #6 All-Time Welterweight; Nat Fleischer ranked him as the #8 All-Time Welterweight; Herb Goldman ranked Armstrong as the #4 All-Time Lightweight; He was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990
3 world titles when there was truly 1 champion in each division without the junior/super divisions is really BAAAAADASSS. Today we have twice as much divisions and 4 times the amount of SO CALLED champions.
SRR beat Armstrong. SRR 1 & Armstrong 2. There might even be a big gap to 3. SRR defeated 11 different champions an astounding total of 23 times. He beat boxers who defeated champions an even more astounding total of 48 times. This is, of course, real champions of the EIGHT traditional divisions. Not the countless phony ones which exist today.
27 fights with 26 knockouts in one year. Unbelievable.
Man, ESPN classic was so good
Joe ganes 1, Ali 2 , Robinson 3 , Armstrong 4 , Joe Louis 5, Willy pep 6 , Benny loenard 7, Sam Langford 8 , sugar ray loenard 9 , Roberto Duran 10
Henry reminds me of a combination of Aaron Pryor (constant punching) and Joe Frazier (straight forward bobbing and weaving). What a great fighter he was and some would argue, due to his accomplishment of 3 championships (no junior titles), the greatest ever. That image of him in his final days in the hospital is very sad. I hate the way these great fighters, all of them with a very rare exception, end up broken. It's a brutal game.
Henry Melody Jackson Homicide Hank Armstrong and later in the clip Billy Conn - we sure need more of these guys in our boxing today .
Happy to have ran on to this. One of my all time favorite Boxers
My top 5 Greatest ever Fighters 1. Sugar Ray Robinson 2. Harry Greb 3.HENRY ARMSTRONG. 4.Willie Pep 5.Jimmy Wilde
i think that is the reasoning most people use not to include him, most of the time
i've read of his accomplishments, and admired his resume...i mean, he is the only man to put a blemish on Gene Tunneys record!
but, i mean, how can you assess that of which you have not seen?
Harry Greb is one of the most fascinating stories i've ever come across, i hope to one day have the pleasure of watching a fight of his!
One of the baddest ass human beings ever dropped off on the planet.
in 1938 the man held 3 REAL world titles at the same time...none of this SUPER title shit...one of a handful of the best fighters ever...
one of the greatest, i have him as my number 2 pound for pound
Bad ass, period.
Kept it close, always had a tucked chin [that's why even far bigger men couldnt knock him out].
thank you for this mr.celtic
Great!
So no video footage of Armstrong vs Robinson? what a shame!
Perpetual motion. Homicide Hank.
