  • Benny Leonard
    (Benjamin Leiner)
    Record 91-5-1 (71 KO)
Leonard was as good as they get; He was quick and shifty, clever and game, could box and punch - and was super smart; Benny spoke softly but hit hard and had great "savvy" for a foe's movements; He was one of the all-time great lightweights and pound-for-pound fighters that ever entered the ring
As a beginner, Benny lost three of his first 13 bouts by knockout; It was more than 200 bouts later (20 years) when he was stopped again - in his very last contest; In a career of more than 210 bouts, he lost just 21 official contests; He was lightweight champion for 7 years and 6-1/2 months and lost only one bout in the twenty year span from May 1912 until October 1932
Herb Goldman ranked Leonard as the #1 All-Time Lightweight; Charley Rose ranked him as the #1 All-Time Lightweight; Nat Fleischer ranked him as the #2 All-Time Lightweight; Leonard was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1955 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990

A lot of modern fans think boxing began with Ali or even Tyson
As such old time GREATS like Benny Leonard, Jimmy Wilde, Ted Kid Lewis, Joe Gans and Sam Langford among many others are too often ignored by casual boxing fans

I'm such a mark for Benny Leonard. I love his story, his fighting style, and the fact that he was such a classy guy out of the ring, but a KILLER inside the ring.

There's few footage available unfortunately, but his resume was stacked to the brim and he retired baby faced. Unfortunately the best fight to view him in was his last fight at 36 yrs old vs a prime McLarnin. Even then old, out of shape and half retired the footwork, jabs, defense and timing is ace. Guy was a real master of the ribg

I'm just putting this out there to see if I get a response: my father was the son of benny leonard and Kathryn 'kitty' abrahms (spelling could be different). I have not come across information that they were officially married so this may have been a relationship either before either married or sometime after he married. that really isn't important to me. however, I have been wanting to find out more about benny. I am looking for information regarding where my father was born so I can request a copy of birth certificate as I haven't got one of those in my possession. if anyone knows of leonard having a liaison with a young woman who had a child with him I would certainly be interesting hearing the story. just trying to find out about my family.

He had well over 200 pro fights, he fought in the newspaper decision era where there was no official victory without a KO (why he has so many wins/ko's) and the press just reported their scorecards and who they felt won.

Those days were better, when fighters looked to own a division. The lightweights were one of the great divisions but now its just another belt. I blame Henry Armstrong. Winning 3 different titles at three different weights. Better to leave your mark of greatness on one division.

Its very sad such a great boxer was burnt out by 35.
    And died by 51.
You always think of boxers being super fit till the day they die but that's not always the case.
I wonder if he had health issues to pass away at just 51. RIP 🙏

Leonard had over 200 fights, enough to burn out the best by age 36. Many or most fighters these days don't even get near 50 fights in their careers.
