    Thank you, Carolyn. I'm a novice at sewing, but your design is easy to construct, and I've made six masks so far. I was able to include a nose wire by sewing a casing (with one short end left open) above the top fold line, before attaching the ear loops. I made sure to leave enough room around the casing for the topstitching that would go all around the mask at the end. I didn't insert the wire until the mask was completely finished so that it wouldn't interfere with the topstitching. I also experimented with making the elastic straps go across from one long side of the mask to the other so that one strap goes around the neck and the other strap goes around the head above the ears. I haven't tried this variation yet, but I think the straps could also criss-cross in the back by attaching them at diagonally opposite corners. You can see I'm having fun with your mask design. Thanks so much.

    Thank you so much Carolyn for sharing your tension technique. I was so tired of having to sew the head strap with the buttons. Also thank you for showing a very easy way of making a mask with a pocket for a filter. It saves so much time from having to cut and pin. May God bless you. You are such a warm, kind and wonderful person!❤

    Carolyn, I'm almost 65 years old. 🤗 I had not sewn anything on a sewing machine in over 35 years. Almost three weeks ago, 💕 my very sweet amazing daughter went out & brought me three sewing machines. I pick the Brother Runway Limited Edition. It brought back so many memories. When I was in school I made almost everything I wore. This mask pattern is truly a blessing. Thank you again. 💐

      Wow three sewing machines. I dug out my old Singer from deep into the closet. I'm with you, haven't sewn in decades. Looked on y-tube to see how to oil and lube it. Still no luck. It's been very difficult to find a sewing machine. Bought one, but it's coming from China!!! So it will be a long time coming.
      Glad your daughter found 3, lucky you. Be safe and stay healthy. Warmest Regards.

      grandmabourke Thank you! I spent quite a bit of time while sewing masks trying to figure out how to make them with an adjustable tension and get them off tender ears. This was the easiest and most economical. It can actually be made with any 1mm or 2mm cord, doesn’t have to be bungee. You might need to tighten a little more but at least you are reaching behind your head to tighten instead of near your face. So glad I can help!

    What a fantastic idea. Adjustability when making masks for others is what I've been struggling with, I've tried various solutions but none I'm really happy with. I have found a pattern for another mask, different style, that fastens in a different way and is easily adjustable but I have several masks already made that I can amend and use this method. Also it uses less buttons (I don't have so many now) than other solutions. Thank you.

    Carolyn! This is a terrific method, and I’m switching to it today. I had been constructing mine in a similar way, but pre-folding them. Your way is a LOT less time ironing and more masks in less time.
    With quality elastic in such short supply I will be adding either loops or a casing so that I can install fabric ties, adjustable paracord or a loop of knotted elastic when available. I just received some 3D printed bias tape makers from an Etsy seller and can’t wait to try them out. Thanks!

      Lelani Carver Lelani! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I was able to find some knit fabric at walmart at a buck a yard. It’s kind of like tee shirt material. I cut it in 1” x 7” strips, run it between my fingers a few times to remove the raw edge fuzz and sew them on the mask for ear loops. They are incredibly comfortable and soft. Just an alternative. :-)

      Carolyn Weir And thank you for your reply. With the type of elastic I can (sometimes) get, and the struggle I had installing it your way, I am sewing tab loops using short pieces of woven bias tape. Then I can use knotted elastic, de-cored paracord, shoelaces, T shirt strips, or fabric ties - whatever is available.

    Thank you for this video. Love the tension idea but it is not clear what to purchase for the 'bungee'. I have an idea of what might work - I would need to purchase either round elastic cording or the 3/8" flat braided elastic (although I can see that is not what you are using). Until I hear from you, will try to find something suitable in my current stash. Thanks again!
    ** Well. Listened to the video again and got my answer, think I'm all set.

    Hi there thanks for the tutorial. Can you tell me how I can do to use a different color in the back?

    • @skysettermobiles
      @skysettermobiles  4 года назад +1

      Sonia Ortiz Hi Sonia! Having a different color on the back would be more difficult but its still doable. I know there was a request by first responders to have a different color on the back but its really easy to tell which side is the back by looking for the filter pocket opening.
      But, if I absolutely needed to do a different color on the back I would do it as follows. It would require 3 pieces of fabric. The largest piece, for the front, would measure 8” x 8”. You would need two pieces of 8” x 4” in a different color for the back. I would sew each of the smaller sections of 8” x 4” on each side of the 8” x 8” section. I would press my seams together in one direction. Now that you have one large piece I would continue to make the mask according to the video directions. Thanks for asking!

      @@skysettermobiles i have a question for you. What is a good thread to use?

    • @skysettermobiles
      @skysettermobiles  4 года назад +1

      Big Al Romero Jr I use Nylon Bonded Thread, usually size 33. It doesn’t break easily, washes and wears very well with almost no shrinkage. Now keep in mind I’m just someone who does some sewing. I’m no expert but this is what I use with no problems. Here is a good example and keep in mind, although this says its for industrial I also us it in my Bernina activa quilting machine also. www.cleanersupply.com/Tailoring/Thread/Jean-Top-Stitching/poly-wrapped-polyester-core-thread-tex-30-6000-yds/?sku=PWC100BK

    • @skysettermobiles
      @skysettermobiles  4 года назад +1

      Big Al Romero Jr Another reason I use this type of thread is it also works wonderfully when sewing appliqué on kites!

    • @skysettermobiles
      @skysettermobiles  4 года назад

      Big Al Romero Jr And you will need one of these because the cone does not fit in your standard machine thread spot. It’s a little more pricey but it takes forever to go through one spool. I would get one black and one white to start with as well as a cone thread stand

    Great design, and nicely communicated!
    Thanks for sharing your clever ideas. You neatly solve the problem of how the unknown end user can customize the earloop size, which seems so critical to their comfort. (The way I came up with takes longer and uses up more elastic.)
    Also this seems like a good version for producing larger numbers more quickly, so I'll be trying your method tomorrow!

    Love the vid & the tension gizmo - absolutely brilliant. Question, at 4:11 what measurement when you fold over the material please. looks like 4" but not sure. Thank you

    • @skysettermobiles
      @skysettermobiles  4 года назад +1

      Thank you so much for the question. When I do the fold for the filter pocket I lay the fabric next to a ruler. If the fabric is 14 inches I will fold each side to about the 7 inch or half way point and overlap them slightly. So, if my math is correct, if I’m folding to the 7” point then the fabric length is 3.5” or just a little longer for overlapping. Hope this helps and doesn’t confuse further.

    in the 2nd step are you folding the material to the middle of the mask or is one side shorter then the other. Sorry I have not sewn for awhile and cannot see the ruler measurements in your video, other wise i love this , you make it simple

    • @skysettermobiles
      @skysettermobiles  4 года назад +3

      Susan Liebzeit lol, would be even simpler if I told you that after hemming the two short sides the fabric measures about 14 inches. When I do the first folds I fold each side to the 7” mark and overlap them a bit. Hope this helps. Might me a bit muddy. Let me know if you understand 😀
