      For the filter pocket, do you sew one side closed?

    I just started to make a mask ! The very first one I made it fits my face so well ! I made the 2nd 1 , it was for my son ! He likes dark colors , But when I fit it again the 1st one I made I felt warm air from my nose coming out up from the both sides of my nose , so it's not good for my son , bcoz he wears eye glasses, it made his eye glasses foggy ! So I put flexible wire , and it works so nice ! I did it !!!!

    Hallo from South Africa thank for this hospital approved mask. I love the way you put in the pocket.
    My hint: I used a thin florist wire for the nose bridge. (I could not buy pipe cleaner) and I used my Bernina embroidery foot. I put the thin florist wire threw the little hole on the foot and zig zag over the fire. there is no way you can damage your needle. try it, it work!!. Thousands of face mask are made in South Africa and still it is not enough.

    Instead of tape on the wire ends, I'd recommend a piece of heat shrink tubing over the wire ends and then heat to shrink. It won't fall apart like tape after washing. Find it in the automotive section at Walmart.
    It's often used to insulate electrical connections and you just might have some at home already.

    Just a quick side note. Many people that are allergic to latex are allergic to many of the foams. Anything with rubber or elastic type products can give an allergic reaction. I would suggest a piece of cotton batting instead of the foam. Just a suggestion. Also the tshirt type ties could be used for the ear ties. I love this pattern. Can’t wait to make it!! I will have do it without the elastic and foam though.

    • @TheSewingChannel
      @TheSewingChannel  4 года назад +2

      Anna Block that would work as well. Since the piece is not touching the skin maybe it would be ok. Some are highly contagious though. Not sure what the foam is made of. If anyone knows... post it please.

    Excellent update! You shouldn’t apologize for learning and improving as you go along. I really appreciate, being a new sewer, learning from your experience! I am a knitter, but always wanted to sew, and this pandemic made me dig my 15-year old (brand new when I bought it) out of the closet and learn to sew masks! Its one of those things I’d always wanted to learn if I had the time. So now I’m making masks for a local nursing home. If you have one near you, call them - because they are really at risk and often very neglected. When I called they said their staff were using bandanas! They asked me how much $ I wanted for the masks!! I said Oh no I’m not selling them. Even if you can only sew a few extra at a time, like me - they really appreciate the help. And it could save lives. Many Blessings to you for posting your expertise for us. 💜🙏🏻👼🏻✝️😇.

    I love the face shape of this mask. The contour of the cheek to nose is best for those of us who wear glasses. The only issue I have is only one opening for the filter pocket. I am using these for personal use and for elderly parents and family. The different masks pattern that I made that my husband and I have been trying out. Washing and drying and putting in different nose pieces to see how they hold up, feel and wash and dry, etc. It has only one side entry for filter. It makes it a challenge to add different filters I'm looking at your design to see if I can modify it to have the filter pocket open on both sides. I need to make it as filter user friendly for elderly folks as possible.

      No reason why it couldn't be hand sewn....except that most of us crafters have been cranking these out by batches of a couple dozen at a time! Fabrics to use: recommend 100% cotton flannel for the side against your face, and a different 100% cotton for the outside. Most have chosen a plain weave, but twill will work fine, as will denim (a specific kind of twill). Don't use a knit (think tshirt, or sweatshirt fabric) because the stretch direction will affect the sturdiness of your creation. The hardest part of this design is actually not in construction, but in finding ANY sort of elastic! Of the 130 masks I've built so far, only the first 10 used elastic for over the ears, because elastic of all sorts has been out of stock since sewers started making masks to fill the PPE needs.

      I checked out the tutorial...too bad here in San Francisco we don't have dollar stores! Anyway, it is a good tutorial. Can copper craft wire be used? I crochet dolls and use copper wire for the skeleton. Also, how would I go about using straps instead of elastic? Does the mask prevent fogging up eye glasses?
      Although the tutorial is wonderful I prefer this mask. I suffered a traumatic brain injury from my ex husband so sewing is hard for me to grasp. I had to trace the pattern from my computer because I have no printer.
      It seems to be the proper size. I am going to have to hire someone to make some of these masks for me. Your pattern is excellent!!

    Hi there! After reviewing several tutorials on masks with filters I aboslutely loved your tutorial! Thank you so mu ch for all the effort and time you invested to help us make quality masks. I was happy to see you decided to revise your videos and make them available to all of us. Unfortunagtely I cut out my fabric for the first six with the old version. I have made 6 masks so far after finally getting up the courage to sew them. The first mask came out great!!! All the ones after however were slightly smaller and the rigt side piece where the iopening fofr the filter is, came out so small and short I do not know why! In fact, folding over the rigth edge to sew in the elastic, there is hardly any fabric to fold over the elastic and stitch. So strange but frustrating in that it also is so close to the edge of the opening for the filter......... i tried to modify the fold over on the rectangular piece but it is still so short. When you fold ov er the edge of thagt frectangle, are you folding o ver the longer or shorter side? From the video it looks like you are folding over the longer edge, 1/4" twice for total 1/2" but the fold is literally coming under the inner fabric piece making it extremely hard to fit the elastic there and sew. I am using 1/4" braided elastic which is wider than the elastic you are using but the first mask seemed to have plenty of allowance bt all subsequent masks have not. Also for the newest, revised pattern where is the rectangle piece to cut? I did not see it in the revised pattern where you offered both a regular size and large size. I have many more masks to make and hoping to get this part adjusted. The rectangle piece measures 2 3/4"L x 1 1/2"W - is this correct? Thank you so much!!!

    • @TheSewingChannel
      @TheSewingChannel  4 года назад +1

      Sounds like you’re doing an awesome job! I do use 1 mm round elastic… So anything larger than that you are going to have to compensate by lengthening the wing area. But the little piece can stay the same just make a smaller hem on it. You are using a quarter inch seam allowance… because if you go any larger than that you’re going to cut yourself short where the pocket area is concerned. Also check and make sure that you printed it out properly - taking note of the 2 inch mark on the pattern paper when it first prints. If it doesn’t read 2 inches from your ruler then you will have to up your printer to 100%… Some are having that trouble. If one side is coming out longer than the other… Are you folding it in half just before you tack it down to see if both sides match?

    • @teresalee6967
      @teresalee6967 4 года назад

      The Sewing Channel Yes I checked the pattern printed at 100%. I also read in other replies the edge to fold over o. that rectangular piece is the slightly angled side, correct? Yes I fold over the main ice so it is even to the other side. I will try another and vary the fold to less than 1/2”.

    Regarding nose wire ...i used green floral wire looped ends so no sharp edges and encased it in washable flexible ie aileens fabric glue between inner or outer layer and another 2 thin layers of cotton then sewed around it..takes time to dry..allow a few days for glue to dry before first wash. Otherwise my masks are identical. They take about 30 to 40minutes to make. Alot of videos making "15 minutes" masks...i beg to differ!

    Tracy, Thank you for doing this. I had a couple of issues with making my mask. I do not have a quilting sewing machine. I had to use a thinner wire because I would not be able to to sew the the wire in because the presser foot is lower than your machine. My mask fits really well. The only other issue I have is that I had to use elastic because I needed 1/2" to 3/4" order to be able to add the ties. Is there a way I could make the sides a little longer so I do not have to use the elastic? Could I add a half inch to the part of the pattern that is not on the fold? Thanks!
