    CDC on Homemade Cloth Face Coverings
    CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.
    CDC also advises the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure.
    Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
    The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.

    I agree that this video was by far the best I have seen yet! Thank you for the very clear instructions both verbally and by video. I would like to mention that the blue pleated mask that you describe as an N95 is NOT an N95...It is a standard everyday mask we use for general purposes in the hospital. An N95 mask filters out 99% of small particles like viruses. This mask does not. The N95 is a stiff, rounded formed mask that does not have pleats. I say this only so the community doesn't get confused and think they are getting more protection than the standard hospital masks provide. It is, however, a great idea to insert a standard hospital mask inside the pocket for extra protection, These are more readily available. Thank you again! I am going to make two tonight for two medical practitioners to use when supplies are low. TI Registered Nurse

    Just a suggestion, I haven't gotten to see one yet, but it looks as if right before you sew and reinforce the edges, you may be able to place a wire inside to help with the nose seal. Love your design!!!!

      I did. It is not super neat, but not horrible. I put the wire in after I turned it right side out and sewed around it to hold it in place, top stitched up to that area, then skipped to the other side of the wire and started top stitching again. Seems to work well.

    The first adult mask I made was too small (probably because the printer didn’t print to scale). I enlarged the pattern and got great results to fit our bigger faces and instead of ponytail holders I attached some bias tape ties (RUclips tutorials) that I folded and reinforced. I like the ties better because they don’t hurt my ears.

    • @Ndnative3431
      @Ndnative3431 4 года назад

      Shelia Ervin I measured my face and increased
      the size of the pattern by about an inch and a half mostly lengthwise (added about an inch and a half to the chin) and a little bit to the sides so the proportions were basically the same. What I ended up with is sort of a one size fits all that actually fits my kids as well because the ties make it adjustable.

      I went to three Walmarts today trying to get materials. The first 2 had shut down the crafts section, and the managers refused to cut fabric even when I explained what I wanted it for. It's really insane to shut down the only place where you could get materials, after the CDC recommended people at least wear homemade masks. That section requires a single employee. Then need to reopen the craft stores. I would consider them essential businesses.

    I modified a similar pattern for my own use. I made the filter pocket opening on the bottom, it's a bigger opening, easier to insert your filter of choice. The tension when you wear it keeps the opening closed. I'm using pieces of blue paper shop towels for the filter. In lieu of elastic for ears, I'm using a shoe string and cinch lock, but could use a length of crochet chain.

    I used hair elastics For the top and tie strings for the bottom.
    So It doesn’t pull your ears down and make the mask fall off, plus you can just slip the top off your ears and flip the mask down if you need to take it off without untying the bottom. Just Incase you know anyone with tiny ears or it works great for little kids also 😷

      Hey Sharon, I skipped the elastic and threaded t-shirt "cord" through where the elastic would go. The cord ties behind the neck and head. I find it more comfortable anyway. Make t-shirt cord by cutting a 3/4 to 1 inch strip all the way across the width of a t-shirt. Pull tightly and it will roll itself into a cord.

    The Fusible Interface is really a step that should just be skipped unless you are planning on only using these one time. That interfacing would last maybe 3 washes and then it would be completely gone. You never put the mask on, but ponytail holders are WAY too small to have any type of secure comfort fit for a large majority of people. If you could get it on your ears, it would be yanking on them.
