THAT ACCESSORY BAR DOH!!! what a fantastic idea, perfect for D&D, can prop up you DMG and you could leave it all under there to come back to exactly where you left off and no one would be none the wiser!!!! dude i love this!!
My daughter asked for a coffee table they could play games on. I used this video for inspiration and built a 4'x3' table at 20" tall; they love it. Thanks!
That's a pretty impressive table - you can see the precision when you're putting the three sections in at about 5:18 and the air pressure from the last one lifts the other two.
Beautiful. I love how your change in careers has made you happy and benefits so many other people as well. That's the sweet spot everyone wants to find in life
Absolutely stunned. Even though you were moving at chipmunk speed. The build look great!! Great work Mark!! I love the idea of the inserts for an iPad, cup, and book holder. The possibilities are endless with that setup!! Well done!
Wow.... This is what true master craftsmanship looks like. Perhaps something to aspire to one day, but far beyond my current "DIY" skills, haha. Gorgeous work!!
Once I saw all the specialty pro tools being used, I knew this video wasn't for me, but I was so mesmerized with the work that I watched the whole thing anyway. Great job.
This is my first guild purchase! I was worried when I heard that it was coming to the free site, but the amount of information I've gotten from the guild videos is well worth money! I'm looking forward to the next two projects I purchased as well. Loved the style of this video!
I mean I kind of feel like it is. It is a great table do not get me wrong... but With all of the stuff he has there should much more creativity to it though.
wow.. this is some truly amazing craftsmanship. I got confused when the lathe came out, but then I was like "dowel pins? he's making his own dowel pins??" Awesome work.
Amazing table and craftsmanship, I was thinking of using it as a dinning table and using the space as storage for place mats, best cutlery, best set of china etc...
Awesome summary vid! Thanks for taking the time to do the quick edit! This still had way more in it than I thought it would and was a great overview! And that table is ROCKIN!
Nice job on the planning and construction of the table, as well as on the video production. Everything looked very professional and it was fun to see it all come together.
My thoughts exactly, I've decided to go with an adjustable height table buying the base from amazon, so at least that's one part that shouldn't go wrong while I stumble my way through this. Lol
Such a precise fit, you can see the air pressure push a panel up at about 5:15 when you're putting the top on. Your projects always satisfy my OCD tendencies.
My brain is melting. I want to do that but also had some simple upgrades in thought. You got great stuff! Now to go myself some power tools.. and a garage.
Wow that's a gorgeous table! Beautiful finish as well. I have a question...What microphone is that clipped to your shirt? I make videos on RUclips as well and I've gotten many complaints about audio and I'm thinking about ponying up and getting a microphone. Thanks, Peter
This design gives me an idea for removable padded rails for when the table is configured in gaming mode. Padded rails really make a "game pit" style table a more comfortable experience. Thanks for the video.
This is amazing. The only complaint I ever have about these types of build guides is true for nearly every one of them. Over 95% of the people who would watch this, if not a higher percentage, have zero access to the tens of thousands of dollars of shop equipment that is needed to make something like this. Seriously. Once again, this table is amazing, but almost no one is going to have access to build something like this.
check your city for a maker space... they are popping up in quite a few places. renting time in a makerspace woodshop might be waaaay more affordable that you might think. especially if you enjoy woodcraft.
Aside from renting like Kirk mentions, you don't actually need the setup of a shop like this. He's just showing you how he does it in his professional shop. There are lots of people on RUclips that show you how to set up a woodworking shop for under $1000. Steve Ramsey is continuously updating his list for this. You absolutely can do it with this cheaper setup, but it requires more use of hand tools vs. power, more time with setups, and will involve more time on finishing work/sanding because those tools aren't going to be as clean with your lines as the professional grade power tools. Either way there's hours of sanding, but more so when using consumer grade tools. Other than say, a domino, these tools don't do anything the cheaper tools can't. They do it faster, more precisely, in a more easily repeatable fashion. Even a domino can be functionally replicated
I mean, you could pull this off without the planer and a lot of the special tools. The only things that a normal joe might not have are the table saw, planar and the router. Of course you can simplify the design, take out the fun connections and just drill and dowel the ends of things. The router would only really be required if you want the outside rail. Projects like these are as hard or easy as you make them.
General (and probably silly) question...I'm looking at making this table once I fine tune my wood working skills a bit more. I don't have a shop at my house, but do have a local one that lets you use it for a membership price. My question: is this something that you can make all the cuts and assemble it elsewhere? Or do you pretty much need to assemble it in shop to make some of those minor adjustments as it comes together? And one more related question, seems it is fully joined with no disassembly option. Would I be correct in assuming plans don't offer an alternate design for assembly/disassembly? I know it probably wouldn't be too hard to tweak it to accommodate such an option, but just didn't know if that is part of the specs/videos you can purchase.
Like the video as always , one thing I really like about the table is that you could put the top back on and leave the game set up under it without having to remove the game in progress and come back later or after dinner and take up were you left off .
Wow, watching this is super satisfactory! I could have hundreds of videos like this on a playlist in the background, while doing work or whatever, and feel great because of it! I Love it!
Was re-watching the video and was curious how you manage no burn marks in the cherry when routing theT track channel? Bit brand or right rpm? Or both??
Holy hell, I am working on a table of my own and this just crapped all over it. I didnt even know some of those tools existed. I really wish I had that workshop going. Life goals!
I love the design of this and have already marked it my winter challenge. Regarding the top, in your design, what led you to the leaf top rather than a solid over-the-edge topper. The latter seems like it would protect against spills better but I didn’t design the piece so I’m wondering what the decision process was. Aesthetics is a perfectly fine answer, too.
He mentioned in one of the project videos that he wanted a frame wide enough that you could comfortably rest your arms on it, and he wen't with a leaf top because it would be easier to handle than one solid piece.
GREAT project/video Marc, I believe it's one of your best. Beautiful design and I especially like the "proud" detailing on the corners. A very detailed project condensed into a 5:35 video. Outstanding job. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Holiday Season!!
Beautiful Marc! Some complicated joinery....always so exciting when it all fits together though. What is the reason for the shellac and then a poly topcoat, why not all one or the other?
Beautiful table. Can’t wait to build one myself, I just joined the guild yesterday. Question: How do you prevent liquid from draining into the game table if someone spills something during dinner? Other than the the plexiglass beneath the tabletop boards?
Wow. Excellent design, great video, fantastic result. Now that you've had this table for going on 7 years, is there anything you'd change about it, Marc? I'll definitely grab the plans but I'd also like to learn from your experience with it if you've got anything additional to share.
Starting to think about purchasing the plans and planning a build for this project. As I have 5 small children, I’m curious about how this would respond to spills. The purpose for having a table like that for my family would be to leave a game constantly on the table and cover it up for meals, so the acrylic layer wouldn’t always be able to protect the gaming surface
You've got some skills! :) Awesome table that serves every need, whether you want to play table top games with your family, poker with your best pals, or some wine and dine with your loved one.
Marc, I don't know why you don't mass produce these? It looks like it only takes you about 5 minutes to build one! That is such a nice table and turned out great! Really enjoyed the video too.
Hey there, Mark! I've watched this video a few times over the years, and keep coming back because you do such clean work. Normally we would tell our buddies to keep their damn drinks off the game table, but if it's used as a dining table too, we're stuck. How do you keep liquids from seeping into the game section if someone spills their drink at dinner?
lovely, could give some info on those knobs you use with the acessory rail? interesting polishing technique also... how long does the poly have to dry for that?
+TheJohdu Just a few days. It's not being polished to a high shine, just smoothing the surface. And the knurled nuts can be found on Amazon www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RAC8R5Q/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00RAC8R5Q&linkCode=as2&tag=thewoodwhispe-20&linkId=OQZYTMCSLGN5LK6E
+The Wood Whisperer thanks alot marc. one other question: here in germany there is no such thing as whipe-on poly. so i mix my own blend with one half poly or poly-alkyd to one half cellulose thinner or white spirit. the dried finish stinks like hell for around three weeks. waterbased finishes aren't really an alternative on darker woods. so does the whipe-on poly also have such a long lasting odor? is the so called odorless mineral spirit (also not available in germany), really odorless?
Looks fantastic Marc. If I ever get a shop again I'm definitely coming to you for plans (and the guild membership) to build this table. Miss having a shop.. :(
Looking good, Marc! I'd like to see side-by-side photos in about 12 months to compare how the cherry has tanned compared to now. I'd also be curious to hear what you think of those accessory holders over time. Seems like a good idea. ...art
I watch a lot of carpenters on RUclips, and the level of craftsmanship you have is amazing. Great job, I'd like to apprentice someone like you someday. God Bless you and your family!
I actually had a similar idea, with wider "arm rests" though so big board games can gold the character trails on the outside instead of in the inside. Any particular reason you used veneered plywood for the cover instead of just using wooden boards? do the warp less?
Cost. Typically the vault you want as large as possible, so the arm rests in this design are good size. If you want character pieces on the outside, make an add on and attach it to the rail. Add-ons are limitless for this
Okay, maybe I'm thinking too much in German terms. An Ash board for example here would be cheaper than getting proper plywood and nice veneer ;) although I could probably get a few sheets of ash or walnut veneer from work for a few bucks... might be worth looking into. And yeah I kind of had the problem of balancing the size of the vault with bigger armrests. Though that's mostly an issue because I'm working around the board of Nemesis which is pretty huge for a board game. And it also has trays for every player and card stacks and putting those onto trays for the rail system would mean that players would need to sit quite a bit away from the actual vault, while I can take a bit off of that by just making the armrests wide enough, which I also like the look of. Though I have to admit I'm already hitting some roadblocks in finding nice boards that are wide and long enough. Welp, I have time to plan and get more inspiration here ;)
Hi Marc, great build and thank you! I'm curious to know how the sub frame (at 2:28) is fastened to the base? At 4:31 when the the table is laying on it's side, I see no fasteners. Does anyone else know?

+Paul Smyers Yeah, I was just about to say that until I saw your comment. Tight work, huh?
@@Rouverius, The table, or the child?
Beautiful. I love how your change in careers has made you happy and benefits so many other people as well. That's the sweet spot everyone wants to find in life
Can't believe this was 8 years ago! I've got to get around to making the coffee table version of this. It's so pretty!
Absolutely stunned. Even though you were moving at chipmunk speed. The build look great!! Great work Mark!! I love the idea of the inserts for an iPad, cup, and book holder. The possibilities are endless with that setup!! Well done!
This is a beautiful table with so much to offer in it's design - I completely love the joinery of this piece.
+The ShavingWood Workshop thanks dude!
Your welcome :-)

In my opinion, the best woodworker in youtube. Great design.Greetings from México!
+Eduardo Mendoza Wow, thanks Eduardo!
the neat thing is if youre playing a card game and its time for dinner, you can leave the cards there, put the boards over it and eat
Garth Palmer Yeah. No need to move the game and try to remember where it all went.
Until you spill your glass of soda while your oop game is set up underneath
Amazing work. I'm no woodcrafter myself but my dad builds both furniture and instruments so I know good craftsmanship when I see it.
dude.. you put so much detail into it. I wish I had a fully stocked workshop to do this too.. haha
This is my first guild purchase! I was worried when I heard that it was coming to the free site, but the amount of information I've gotten from the guild videos is well worth money! I'm looking forward to the next two projects I purchased as well. Loved the style of this video!

Please, never remove this video from RUclips. This is just too awesome.
Amazing to see this much craftmanship in just 5 minutes!
Absolutely beautiful project Mark! I'm amazed at how far your craftsmanship has progressed. Great work and very inspiring. Thanks for sharing.

Very beautifull and classy ! The idea for the accessories rail is brilliant.
That's an impressive set of tools you got there! Way Beyond my price range! I guess I'll have to look for something simpler. Nice table

+Peter Gillock I had to scroll down to see if anyone else commented on this. I guess it's a sign of precision craftsmanship!
+Joe Brewer Haha, I did the same thing.
My brain is melting. I want to do that but also had some simple upgrades in thought. You got great stuff! Now to go myself some power tools.. and a garage.
Another great idea. You could also use this as a puzzle table and leave the puzzle spread out and just put the finished top back on. Great job.
That is a beautifully made table, with loads of great ideas incorporated. Thanks for sharing.
Wish I had a shop that nice to work with. Awesome build
Have you seen the wyrmwood prophecy table? Interested what your thoughts were on it.
Absolutely beautiful. Loved the ingenuity of the design and assembly skills.
The little girl at the end was adorable ^_^
+milo thanks!
she said we must join. and she will get a one zip XD we will join
just got the plans for this. looking forward to beginning the project. I have a newborn, so gonna have to be patient!
I find it really satisfying to see that wooden spindle bit go through that hole so flush.
Another beautiful piece! Awesome design! I really like it's finish!
Wow, what a video! What workmanship! What a table! This deserves way more views.
Wow that's a gorgeous table! Beautiful finish as well. I have a question...What microphone is that clipped to your shirt? I make videos on RUclips as well and I've gotten many complaints about audio and I'm thinking about ponying up and getting a microphone.

My thoughts exactly. I've done 2 game tables and I've been using mdf with veneer. It's pricy but stays straight and looks great.

Absolutely incredible workmanship. Beautiful table.
I love the Idea of the accessories side track! really clever...
Love a project that justifies purchasing all the tools needed to build it, particularly those that come in grey boxes with green latches!
Great multifunctional table. Also... using the iPad as a straight-edge... Love it!
Well, so much for building this one with the three or four tools I have. Lol. Beautiful table. Bravo. And Congrats on the new arrival to the family!

Another great video. Question - why the shellac? Could you have gone straight to the wipe-on poly?
I love the design of this and have already marked it my winter challenge.

+Tyler G shellac helps prevent the blotching that can occur with oil-based finishes on cherry.
That little plunger to lift up the wooden table surface was really slick.
Beautiful work. I hope I have the skill to build such a nice piece of furniture like that some day.
Great build. Did you just drill a hole for your dowel to lift the center up?
what an amazing build - I can only wish i had the tools and skill that you have - great job
Beautiful table. Can’t wait to build one myself, I just joined the guild yesterday.
Question: How do you prevent liquid from draining into the game table if someone spills something during dinner? Other than the the plexiglass beneath the tabletop boards?

very cool table Marc fantastic idea for christmas gatherings play games with the fam nice one

Beautiful Table! You knocked this one out of the park!
tbh one of my favorite parts of the build is the shaker peg u turned on the lathe..idk why..lol but it is how much are plans??
I actually had a similar idea, with wider "arm rests" though so big board games can gold the character trails on the outside instead of in the inside.

That talking baby part at the end of the episode was great. Take Care Marc.
I've never even thought about proud finger joints, but you made them look really nice!
Great video on the construction and the table is beautiful.
Your videos are an inspiration to many...
I have a few quick questions. Is it resilient to spills? How has it faired since you built it?
