The funny thing is, if you wrote Neil a letter, there was a great chance that he would respond to you. A friend of mine in highschool did a thesis on 2112 and sent a copy to Neil, and not only did he write a 2 page response to my friends thesis, he even corrected his grammer and punctuation. She is at work and they came in to eat and relax. If you want to tell them you’re a fan…fine. Immediately follow that up with, “What can I get you, hon? They were an exceptional band and super talented musicians, and it’s great that they were as successful as they were, but I always thought they didn’t quite get their due, especially Lifeson.
I am filled with nothing but sadness at Neil’s passing but also I am full of respect for Geddy, Alex and the rest of the Rush ‘machine’ that allowed Neil to die quietly and privately, the way that he chose to live. Kudos to them.
I SSSSOOOO get Neil Peart! I saw him once about 15 years ago and gave him a head nod. He gave me one back and EVERYTHING was right in the universe! RIP Neil!!
NEIL PEART’S NARRATION ON EXIT STAGE LEFT DVD: There’s a tremendous ambiance about a concert hall…to even before a band starts playing…from the time the doors open..this place feels electric you know! That’s one of the things I like most about the road that feeling of standing in the hall when the doors open feel the excitement bursting into the hall. I must admit I feel very comfortable playing live a lot! A very modern urban setting for that Tom Sawyer mentality and a very carefree stride and a very self-possessed kind of air. Xanadu: The question we tend to ask the most often is WHAT IF? I think of you had to simplify a motivation or simplify a moving force in our music that would probably…suffice! Red Barchetta: Well it seems to me a car is one of those handy metaphors and volumes have been written about the sociological and cultural impact of the car and what it represents but it also has a very fundamental sensual feel and it’s a metaphor for sexuality and freedom. We’ve certainly tried to guide everything by the principles that were interested in and the freedom of choice and the material we’ve been playing and expression of music that we found to be exciting would excite other people as well. If the songwriting is important and playing really well on stage is important it’s gonna make the difference between feeling good or not feeling good when I walk off stage feeling that I played as well as I can or as close to well as I can then I feel very satisfied and good for what you have done. YYZED: I think there is a very strong relation maybe not generally recognized between drums and between words as the rhythmic structure and phrasing and the rhythm of verse especially is very strongly rooted in the same syncopation as drums the same patterns of thinking overall work for me with words as much as they do with drum beats.
RIP Neil. I started listening to Rush about two years before the Aqua Teen movie came out and thought the band was awesome. Never forget The Drum Solo Of Life!!!
I grew up in the 70's and started listening to Rush in high school when A Farewell to Kings came out. I saw them 6 or 7 times over the next few years, incredible musicians! They were really a great band and always striving to get better at playing and writing. Thanks guys!
My Aunt and uncle used to live in Willowdale, in Toronto, Rush is awesome, big inspiration as teen teaching myself guitar. Canada rocks Rush rocks Neil Peart is a legend! Gone not forgotten
Tonight I heard of Neil's passing. So unbelievably sad. After watching this video I realized how much we were alike. Even if I had the opportunity of a backstage pass at a rush show I don't think I would have talked to him. Even if he was there. RIP Professor.
Linda Aguilar it’s the age we live in ... lost so many of my heroes in the past few years, Emerson, Lake, Squire, Wetton, Bowie and now Neil ... so hard to come to terms with, but accept it we must. I’ll remember the shows as long as I’m here 🕯😔🧺
I'm exactly the same as Neil...classic introvert which helps with his writing! I wouldn't seek out a meeting with any of them, would never bother them if I saw them somewhere (nod, wave, leave them alone)....but would have loved a long, real conversation without any fuss; maybe over a beer or two, talking to Neil about biking around and what he'd seen on his travels. Imagine that......awesome.
Hey guys, you are a true showman. The band is not the same . Neil's passing was a shock to the world, espescily when we can get as deaperly or as Phanatical and just love what you guys loved to as long as true fans give you guys some breathing space as not to be an intrudenc upon you guys . I recently bought one of the just over a hundred kits have been built ... Timeless serise 1500 year old log . Cause the Late Professor Mr Neil Peairt was the drummer after ThexGreat Buddy Rich true icons people's and I think very highly of this very versatile Hard rock band in the world ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I had tutoring for awhile,so I could under stand WTHF I was doing it cant hurt every instrument has sheet music or Manuscript..... yes in our case the bass cleft timing signature BPM yes good to go wait hum me a bar please . It's rather a pleasure to play music with people that know what there doing when we are what we are . Right we've done four already and now where steady and then they went 1234 whoosh 😂❤
Holy crap, they're HUMAN!!!!Well, not really, but I've seen them live 11 times, and while on stage they are something far beyond human. If you have also seen them live, you get it. If not, take my word for it. I'm just happy I got to take both of my sons to a few Rush shows before they retired. Nothing more special than seeing your 9 year-old son, with tears pouring down his face, as they start playing his favorite song (Time Stand Still), and you ask him "What's the matter?" - and he screams, "I'm just SOOOO happy!!!" Best parenting memory ever. Period. Now I have tears rolling down my face as I type this and remember a moment I will never forget.
A great stort about your son. I have two sons but Rush finished touring when they were too young to go. I'm still trying to get them to appreciate this phenomenal band and three genuinely humble, humane men.
RUSH, saw them 3 times, on 3 different tours and they were fantastic every time. Love the boys and will miss the 3 of them together playing. Certainly one of the best bands to come out of North America ever!!! 3 guys and all that music, PRICELESS!!!
I was about 18 when I bumped into Neil in London (I was there for a Styx gig), the week before I’d travelled from Durham to Chester to watch them hitch hiking most of the way, I recognised him and just asked if he was Neil Peart and he just grumpily said “not today” and walked off, what a miserable c**t. I still love Rush 😁👍
Ya think so? I don't. After all, he's more than explained his position on this. But, I respect what you took from it. Maybe, he could have said, "I am, thanks for noticing, I'm busy and enjoy your day". I've also heard that when you break the ice with someone famous, talk about a hobby of theirs, like touring on motorcycles. A different approach. Thanks for sharing!!
I never met any of the guys from Rush but if I did and got the cold shoulder from Neil I’d still love him just the same. I completely understand his shyness. I’m basically the same way.
Thank you SO much for posting this segment! I have Neil's book (which is great), but seeing him and the others talk about that time period brings it into an even more profound focus. Bless them all- I'm so glad they came back to give us more music.
Pancer's Deli, where they went after their very first gig together long ago. They still go back there after all these years......nice. It obviously has a special place in their hearts.
I got to meet Neil and actually TALK with him back in 1987... and I got to tell him "I KNOW that fame and adulation can make you uncomfortable... but PLEASE also try to understand... the us "FANS"... we are THANKFUL and GREATFUL for what you and RUSH have brought us! And as that might make you uncomfortable... you have ALSO made OUR LIFES BETTER In ways you may not EVER Understand?! If I wanted to practice my drums... I HAD to get ALL of my homework DONE AND Have good grades! THIS was the trade off that MY parents put in place for my being allowed to practice drumming! So, I made SURE my homework was DONE in school that day AND I made SURE I was in the A to B grades average BECAUSE my DRUMMING and MUSIC were SO Important to me! NOT to mention that I became a better READER, Writer AND Lover of BOOKS BECAUSE of you! So you see... we don't want to make you feel embarrassed or uncomfortable... we just want to THANK you for what you have given us and done for us! Simple as that!" He laughed... but I know he thought about it... because he told me that he had. And that it touched him that I was so emotional about it. And that he really didn't realize those "Little Things" that he caused and effected in our lives! Because ALL of my friends whom most are also musicians ALSO had parents that told them almost the EXACT same thing! AND Also became better students, Readers AND PEOPLE BECAUSE of RUSH! RUSH WAS/IS MORE then the sum of there parts! :D 'Nuff Said! Joe
We all grew up thinking it was "Pert". Now all the sudden we have to completely change that? To me if you say it the correct way you're a freakin show-off wanker. Real men say Pert. Dweebs say PEEEEIIIRYYYYYRRRTT.
If Neil was not such an introvert his skill level would not be where it is today.... He focused on the music plain and simple. Probably a cool cat to hang with but it takes just the right person to get the invitation. I wouldn't want him to be any other way.....
going by memory Neil enjoyed motorcycles. There was an article in Cycle/Cycle world about one of the writers meeting him and riding with him between gigs.
Last time I was at that same deli (Pancers on Bathurst Street), I had the luxury of eating beside George Chuvalo, Eddie Shack and Red Kelly (R.I.P.). If you are ever in Toronto or live there and haven't tried it yet, GO! Amazing food. That place has some history and fed many a legend. I think the first time Rush made money, that's where they went to spend it.
I used to be good friends of the late great Clive Burr from Iron Maiden. Clive told me that Neil Peart was one of his true heroes. He told me back in his Maiden days he got to meet Peart and told him how much he admired him and his work. I can't remember the exact words Clive told me, but basically Peart wasn't at all receptive to Clive's gushing compliments and stormed off!
Clive was the reason I became a drummer. I even had my set like his, with the little tom perched on top of the others. I think Clive is the unsung master of metal drumming. Only drummers can see just how sophisticated he was, or it seems that way.
I tended bar at The Hideout in Dubuque, Iowa, between 1998-2000. A tall guy came in on a BMW motorcycle one late afternoon -- saw mostly Harleys so it stood out. You won't believe it, but yes, it was Neil. We talked for a couple of hours, and it eventually hit me who I was talking with. I was a fan, not a huge fan, but definitely a fan. I asked Neil to sign a menu and include the date. He graciously agreed and went on his way. It is strange for me to hear that he was reticent to speak with fans in the context of a pre-concert setting. He was talkative but seemed sad to me, and said he was looking for a new chapter in life.
That was the Years around when His Daughter was killed in a car accident and His wife died shortly after. He took a long motorcycle trip for a few Years and everyone in the Rush camp was super concerned about Him.There is a chapter about it from this documentary called " Beyond the lighted stage"
If this is true, this shows how nice he is randomly in public if you dont go all superstar on him. He wants real fans that want to talk about the band or drumming, not someone that says they like RUSH when they dont even know Xanadu or how to play an instrument. If i was Geddy i would be kinda pissed from that older waitress. Like i would be somewhere in the middle between Geddy and Neil.
Spent 3 weeks with Neil on a bike trio through China. We climbed Tai Shan and were rpomised we'd live 100 years after having made the assent. (Hold Your Fire, Tai Shan) As he describes in this clip, he was a private person although when he got to know you he enjoyed getting to know you. He invited us to his home and to performances at the FORUM, LA...
RIP Neal Peart. You took your shy, intense, brooding darkness to a new plane this week. May you be appreciated, respected but generally left alone on the other side!

I am filled with nothing but sadness at Neil’s passing but also I am full of respect for Geddy, Alex and the rest of the Rush ‘machine’ that allowed Neil to die quietly and privately, the way that he chose to live. Kudos to them.
Amen to.r.i.p Neil Peart.a hero to legions of drummers.the world over.
'A brewing intensity with wisps of darkness" is a good line by JB.
Some of the most talented and nicest guys in Rock N Roll..
Yep down to earth.fumny and loving guys.just family men that could jam their asses off.
I SSSSOOOO get Neil Peart! I saw him once about 15 years ago and gave him a head nod. He gave me one back and EVERYTHING was right in the universe! RIP Neil!!
NEIL PEART’S NARRATION ON EXIT STAGE LEFT DVD:
There’s a tremendous ambiance about a concert hall…to even before a band starts playing…from the time the doors open..this place feels electric you know!
YYZED:
I think there is a very strong relation maybe not generally recognized between drums and between words as the rhythmic structure and phrasing and the rhythm of verse especially is very strongly rooted in the same syncopation as drums the same patterns of thinking overall work for me with words as much as they do with drum beats.
If I saw them in person... I would probably say holy shit it's Rush, tell them I love them, then promptly run away.
A Simple Genius to those who love Rock music!
RIP Neil.
I started listening to Rush about two years before the Aqua Teen movie came out and thought the band was awesome. Never forget The Drum Solo Of Life!!!
I'm sort of with Neil...RIP sir.....but I never chased after stars in my life. Concerts, sure. But that's about as far as I went
I grew up in the 70's and started listening to Rush in high school when A Farewell to Kings came out. I saw them 6 or 7 times over the next few years, incredible musicians! They were really a great band and always striving to get better at playing and writing. Thanks guys!
All great guys ! We love you Neil .... RIP
My Aunt and uncle used to live in Willowdale, in Toronto, Rush is awesome, big inspiration as teen teaching myself guitar. Canada rocks Rush rocks Neil Peart is a legend! Gone not forgotten
The way they edit Black into the topic is perfect. its a charming doc.
It's tough, at times, when you actually ARE "the Best".
0:45 Hahahahha Gotta love Alex 😄😄
He is wonderful man❤
from germany, we love you, rush
Tonight I heard of Neil's passing. So unbelievably sad. After watching this video I realized how much we were alike. Even if I had the opportunity of a backstage pass at a rush show I don't think I would have talked to him. Even if he was there. RIP Professor.
I am sad all my musicians are passing. rip Neil
I think Neil has left us to catch up with his long-awaited friends. RIP sir.
Thank you for some of the most important music in my life
Simply and so complicatedly the greatest drummer/percussionist/lyricists of all-time. My heart is shattered... God has him now
Hey guys, you are a true showman. The band is not the same .
Neil's passing was a shock to the world, espescily when we can get as deaperly or as Phanatical and just love what you guys
loved to as long as true fans give you guys some breathing space as not to be an intrudenc upon you guys .
That’s a beautiful story.
RUSH, saw them 3 times, on 3 different tours and they were fantastic every time. Love the boys and will miss the 3 of them together playing. Certainly one of the best bands to come out of North America ever!!! 3 guys and all that music, PRICELESS!!!
I’ve seen Rush 13 times since the 70s. Always a kick ass show!🤘🏻
Your spirit will live on forever on the radio. Rest in Peace maestro⚘
RIP Neil Pearl. God bless.
Peart*
I never met any of the guys from Rush but if I did and got the cold shoulder from Neil I’d still love him just the same. I completely understand his shyness. I’m basically the same way.
I always love how some people say they're big fans of Neil Peart but still can't pronounce his last name right.
as an introvert i've never vibed with someone i've never met more than Neil RIP sir your music improved my life!
All these guys are just cool.
Thank you SO much for posting this segment! I have Neil's book (which is great), but seeing him and the others talk about that time period brings it into an even more profound focus. Bless them all- I'm so glad they came back to give us more music.
Sorry, this post was intended for the last segment (part 3)
Pancer's Deli, where they went after their very first gig together long ago. They still go back there after all these years......nice. It obviously has a special place in their hearts.
RIP Neil.......will be missed, but never forgotten
#IwillChooseFreewill
RIP Neil Peart. September 12, 1952 - January 7, 2020. You were the best drummer ever !
THEY WERE A BIG INFLUENCE IN MY LIFE, BUT i WOULD NEVER INTRUDE INTO THEIR LIVES. THE MEMORIES I HAVE OF NP ARE MINE...ALONE...THANK YOU NEIL...RIP !
The ALL-CAPS really drives the point home, eh?
Simple as that!"
He laughed... but I know he thought about it... because he told me that he had.
'Nuff Said!
Joe
I'm a proud Canadian, Rush was a great rock band🇨🇦
Can't even watch this without tears welling up....still hurting over Neil.
If you don't know how to pronounce Neil's last name,
you don't get to hang with Neil.
Jason Lefler its peart but pronounced peert isnt it?
David Sadowski Correct.
Pairt
We all grew up thinking it was "Pert". Now all the sudden we have to completely change that? To me if you say it the correct way you're a freakin show-off wanker. Real men say Pert. Dweebs say PEEEEIIIRYYYYYRRRTT.
@@Frip36 Douchebag. You're a wanker if you don't say somebody's name correctly.
These guys sound so nice. They sound like people you could just sit down and have a chat with.
I was at moving pictures tour and Alex was right in front of me. I thought I was going to die a happy 14/15 year old right there.
It's hilarious, it's as if that waitress had recognised Jack Bruce and ignored then leaned over Eric Clapton to get an autograph.
Good analogy
Reminded me of the people who got their photo taken with Matthew Broderick, after asking Jerry Seinfeld to step aside, not recognizing him.
It would be hilarious if Rush made an appearance on Wayne's World in SNL. Wayne and Garth would bow to them, and Neil would smack them.
I have every RUSH album 10 years to get them all tapes, CDs, and Records
"Wisps of darkness"
Jack is just so funny and brilliant...right on the money 😆
I don't get it? What does he mean by that?
I met Geddy 2x and waved at Alex at about 40 feet away as he got on an elevator.
How did you come to meet geddy?
I love how alex gets a charge out of not being recognized like Geddy.....
Alex you don't know this, but you and Page taught me how to play guitar when I was a kid. Thank you! *
I read a lot of comments on U tube on a world of different subjects, find Rush to be very inspiring , but this is the best I have ever seen! Love it!
my favorite clip of all time
Neil and Buddy Ritch are hitting the skins in heaven. One day I'll see that show.
Actually their both at rest .. heaven? Have to wait on the resurrection of the dead first
Geddy is such a genuinely kind person..wow
I thought that lady was being a little bit rude when she was asking for an autograph
RIP Neal you will be missed
RIP Neal Peart. You took your shy, intense, brooding darkness to a new plane this week. May you be appreciated, respected but generally left alone on the other side!
"Any kind of adullation Is wrong", oh man a love that man
