How to Escape Triangle Chokes Early and Keep Passing The Guard

  • Triangle Chokes are one of the most effective submissions from the bottom positions and can be a huge problem for any top player or guard passer. In today's video we have a question regarding just that situation. Our friend Nick who is a wrestler type who is coming into BJJ is getting caught in triangle chokes left and right and he's wondering if I have any tips on dealing with the situation.
    In this video I share tips on both a triangle choke defense and how to defend it. I used to struggle with the same problem as a wrestler who would get caught in triangle chokes while passing guard. I also show how I corrected the issue.
    I also share how I like to look at the triangle as a position which has multiple stages. I consider 3 stages of triangles to be a starting point which I explain in the video.
    From there I talk about some tips to escape the triangle in stage 1, or a loosely locked triangle. I'll work on escapes for the future if in a deeper position.
    Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

      Ayy! Join the cult! Jk haha but honestly, please for the sake of this martial art, don't abandon it until you give it at least 1 year worth of training. I've seen many people leave my gym early on because they would get super frustrated and constantly lose and get submitted, and I nearly did the same! But I had a friend get me into training and he pushed me to keep going. You'll realize that even if you get submitted or lose every day, you're constantly learning and adapting. After the first year, I realized I was hooked into this for life and won't be giving it up anytime soon. Hope you feel the same man!

      If I am interpreting your question right you need to grab the leg you throw over with your opposite hand to cinch it down. Cut the angle to make it tight and pull down on the head. Seem to be the best methods I've seen to get it tight. Also squeeze your knees together...

    Hey Chewy in position 1 when you posture up and head up to create space, would you recommend trying to stand straight up to keep extending the legs or remain knees down?

    • @Rayja3
      @Rayja3 4 года назад

      Logan Greenberg I know you didn’t ask me but I’d say you’d probably want to keep knees down because if you stand you could create too much space and they could free their legs and sweep you or just scramble out. Overall, like most things in BJJ it just depends

    Been training for almost a year as a bigger guy, 6 foot 300 lbs. Finding rolling partners is problematic at best but even so, I find myself on my back way more than I should. Triangles aren't really my issue as much as being on bottom side control and getting my arms locked out, and the temptation is to use strength to break out which is not good. I feel like I should be better after this much time training and feel like my coaches are disappointed with my performance. It is hard to stay motivated to train when you feel like you're constantly losing to the same thing over and over again.

    • @KT-ym1cn
      @KT-ym1cn 4 года назад

      Don't get discouraged. A lot of ppl with way more than a year feel the same. Some days are better than others. Embrace the grind. I suck too but I love the struggle and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment just from grappling hard for an hour or more, win or lose.

    • @dereksmith6097
      @dereksmith6097 Год назад

      I agree with KT76. I am 60 years old with bad knees, 6ft, 265. Hell, I have bad everything, but I still train. I have learned with age and wisdom that I am not competing against the younger guys, I am only competing against myself. Also, I don't need to impress anyone. I have black belts in five other arts, so that ship has sailed. I will never be a BJJ black belt at this point. I just want to be able to still protect myself at my age and I just love the martial arts and can't stop. If you adopt that mindset and realize it is a journey and not a race, it will be ok.

    I have a question. During roll sessions, when we exchange partners, I am so out of breath that I cannot think anymore, I cannot concentrate or do anything valuable. The only think I can do is to prolong the submission. I dont even try to submit or attack, I am just trying to survive. Should I sit one out when it is like that or just push through the pain like I normally do?

    • @clawjungleranger
      @clawjungleranger 4 года назад +1

      Control your breathing more, do some more cardio if you can in the free time but don't spaz out. Especially if you're doing Gi jiu jitsu, try to be more methodical in your approach. You don't want to always use brute force to make certain moves work. Understand the fundamentals and use mechanics to your advantage. If you feel like you're going to throw up, you should probably sit out lol. But if you're just breathing heavy, relax a bit and do some breathing exercises, then jump in but again, don't spaz out!
