I’m a white belt with six months of training. We have a short, stocky 280-ish pound guy that crushes us. I used these tactics today. My goals were (1) don’t let him get side control and (2), if he does, apply these tactics. He got side control after a short fight but I got on my side and prevented head control. He had my arm pinned against me but I bumped it through and got my underhook. I couldnt sweep or sneak out the back but it was much easier than bearing his weight on my chest. Baby steps! I’ll build off of this small victory!! Thanks Chewy!!
When I was in High School we had 2 seniors at the 175 level. I was a 10th grader at the same weight and so they pushed me up to heavy weight and at times I had to wrestle guys up to 400 pounds! I learned something vital - do NOT go for a take down. The heavier guy just collapses on you. Reach across to the far arm and push yourself - not them around to the side using 2 arms to control one. You can't move them but you can push yourself around to their back. I used to do this every match and win quite often giving up over 100 pounds most times. However - I was faster and had more stamina. Once I got the back I would trip them get the take down and stand up pushing away from them. Are you going to submit them? No, you are going to control them and not get trapped under.
Thanks for sharing Steve. Have you had anymore successes? There are a couple guys I roll with that I give up at least 80+ pounds to. Once he gets SC or mount I get gassed super fast. I have such a hard time handling that weight on me. I’m hoping this will help.
I am just starting my BJJ journey and I am one of the bigger guys at my gym (225 pounds). I find myself getting matched up with the bigger guys all the time (as I should). Not knowing what to do when they get side control like this is a definitely flaw in my game. This video will hopefully be a game changer.
As a longtime grappling instructor I'm going to say that every now and then you come across a very good breakthrough technique - I'd call this strategy one of those rare moves that is simple and workable. I taught this sidemount stalling/escape at my class tonight and had it used against me time and again . I thought , 'stone me, I've made a rod for my back, teaching this technique !" It's a SIMPLE, HIGH PERCENTAGE move . Many thanks to Chewjitsu.
no, but it will work twice as good against 600 lbs wrestlers, so i recommend training that. Alternatively, you can offer him a quick 1lb "snack" before you roll, he'll never suspect he just got played into a trap :D
just another RUclips channel actually, I hear that’s changed now. New rules say that a variance of 2lbs either way is now acceptable, which would mean anything between 298lbs and 302lbs is within the range. Regulating this is going to be hard though 🤔
At 6'2 and 195, I'm not exactly small, but I rolled at a new gym tonight where I was grouped up with two body builders and an active duty Marine, all of whom were around 6'4 and easily 200+ lbs. This video saved some of my dignity if nothing else! (I'm still a white belt, so it's not like I expected to dominate, but at least save some face haha!) Great techniques!
I appreciate how you actually used guy that actually fit the description more or less. I’m a light weight lanky guy. So you both are pretty big too me. Lol. I get crushed in side control a lot. I like the detail of falling to my side, hiding my arm and peaking out my elbow. I’m definitely going to experiment with this. Thanks!!
Wow. Chewy, thank you for this. This is my 3rd week in BJJ. I watched this video this morning, I was rolling with my instructor and ended up in this exact position, he is about 280 as well, and I started working the move. I could tell he was impressed I was actually attempted a useable counter!
Whenever I get passed I think damage mitigation and go all in on fighting the crossface and possibly redirecting that arm across so I can sit up but man I forgot how important keeping them from getting the underhook and not being flat was. I'll definitely be tucking that arm from now on so I can peak the elbow out into my own underhook just like you said. I also really appreciate the worst case escape you demonstrated too. I've seen getting that underhook from bottom taught three different ways and yours kept it real about how far in you'll get that hand before you have to bridge to deepen it.
What I like the most about this is it is just a basic thing (getting out of side control ), but you prep it better. The things you showed here made me think, in my normal rolling routine this is much better than always falling on my back and trying to go Step 1 do this, Step 2 then this. This is just simple prep and flow. Thanks Chew
Haha it's been a year since I've seen this. To this day this is my favorite and most used escape. I'll be getting my purple belt soon, thank you so much for the lesson man. Never knew how much I'd be using it.
ForzaTerra89 Either hip up or shrimp away until I get that space to get the other underhook in and just keep repeating and exploding. Sometimes however I can make space to get to Half Guard and I only need the one underhook (make sure it's on the same side u have the leg in half guard position) and get to dog fight position and either take the back, sweep and during practice I sometimes get a calf crush. If u can't move ur opponent, move urself. And then there are just times when ur stuck and ur opponent is gana have to make a move. Push urself tho like at the last 2 minutes or so tho.
I can see being able to get mount from this move as well if you take out the arm that you have your hand on after coming up. Crucifix chokes work really well on big guy and I can see the sweep with this move working well too. Thank you I will definitely be adding this to my arsenal. I am 320 so I am always going against big guys.
Thanks! We went over this in class recently, but I get new details every time I see it. You pointed out some stuff I've been missing, should make this a lot easier.
Did this as a 260 lb white belt against the biggest guy in our gym and it worked! Thanks so much! He had no idea it was coming, and I took his back once, and pulled guard from it! Thanks bro!
Lol aww man this made me so happy to see. U shoulda seen the smile on my face while watching this video. Thanks so much Chew! Love this vid, I use the underhook escape alot, but in this video you showed me alot of details I didn't know and now I know that I'm actually doing the technique wrong. Since I practice with alot of smaller guys, it's so easy to move them and I guess I never knew my technique was bad, but now that I saw ur video, now I can start practicing it the correct way, the way u showed me. Thanks so much man, It's super awsome that you went through the trouble of making and posting a video for my question I really appreciated it!!! N there's no doubt that there are others who have this same question watching this video right now!
+Chewjitsu is the side of the hand meant to act as a stop for the body? It has a lot of weight to counteract and my tricep and rotator cuff seems weak with that much weight on top to have any real leverage. I am trying to refrain from using the palm, but is difficult not to. Could you elaborate a bit on this detail?
+snorlaxcom Well the most important part about tucking the arm is to deny the under hook. From there if you're tucked in tight it should be a big push with the tricep. It will involve the rotator a bit but shouldn't be anything where you're straining to move your arm. The key is to peek out the elbow and not lead with the hand. From there circle with the arm. In most positions I find that this is the easiest way to fight for under hooks. If you'd like a more in depth video on the under hook let me know. I'll make a video solely on that if it would be helpful.
THANK YOU!!! rolled with a heavier guy the other day. I just started I'm 6'7, 191lb. For some reason, everyone rolls harder against the tall guy. I have a great instructor but this variation looks legit. Can't wait to go test it out. Thanks!!
Nice details on how you use that underhook. I have to rethink my traditional "big guy" escape. I frame and re-guard (but Im extremely flexible) and I am expending far more energy doing so than you are here. The chopping underhook and how you flare it I expect will be a huge help.
+Tom Gavrilos thanks for the comment. I'm not flexible. I mean I'm not super stiff but I have never had the ability to wing my legs around with a basic frame. Since I've been 200+ my whole adult life the frame just never worked well. I find this escape gives me a way better return for my physical investment.
great vid please do more of these. I am in that middle ground where I am heavier than the smaller guys 160 - 185 but end up pairing with the gym titans , 260 - 300. I am 235. I find my self as blue belt defending smash attacks from 3-4 stripe blue belts and purple. All of these help immensely !!!
THANK YOU! I have been struggling for months with many side control escapes but as a scrawny 13 year old none would work in live rolling with the guys in my gym (all have about 50 pounds at minimum on me) I'm going to try this next class and I'll let you all know how it works for me
Thanks for posting this! Last night at class, I was getting stuck in side control against a guy that weighs 140 lbs more than me. I am going to try this escape next time.
Very good explanation! I always struggle against 250lbs+ blue belts since all they do is muscle me down to the floor, and pin me to follow with kimura or americana after.
Great tactics for brand new guys like me. My first couple weeks I'd get pinned under big guys like this, get claustrophobic, panic and want to tap just to stop the pressure. I'm going to try these at class tomorrow. Wish me luck!
Watching this with a very painful bruised rib from when I got pummeled yesterday. Hopefully after watching this I won’t let myself get as vulnerable again
This has been very helpful. I always get caught in this. Specific to heavy pressure at 4:40. The only problem I face is the guy on top keeps re-adjusting and pushes me back down by driving his knees into me.
@chewjitsu My problem is we do these drills like side control, full mount etc. and we start in the worst possible position and I can’t escape these heavy dudes without getting my ribs smashed and getting injured. I only weigh 175 and we have some 250 lb. former D1 college wrestlers who are now blue and purple belts. I’m an out of shape 40 year old brand new white belt. Sucks not being able to train for a while now but I’ll be back as soon as I can breathe without it hurting. Lol! Love the content especially old gems like this one. Thanks!
Thanks Chewy! Great approach that I'm going to have to work on to use against the guys at my gym. They keep getting me smashed in their side control. Gotta work on that!
Thank you for sharing this - simple, straightforward and effective. I can't wait to use this in class tomorrow, and will definitely be watching all your other videos!
I’m a white belt, I did BJJ for 3 years. 15-18 years old. Just came back into it at 24 years old and got a buddy from work to join me. He was a state champion wrestler and has about 60 pounds on me. First couple days he couldnt pass my guard and I’d submit him with a triangle or Kimura. He realized he can dominate me from side control. Gonna give this a try.
no clue how much this helps, I train in Jeet kune Do concepts, and my training buddy who I roll with, and my self are soon getting our yellow belts. I'm 6ft 165lbs max and he's 5'9-10 and around 220lbs
to be specific the arts I practice are muy Thai, Jun fan gung fu, Kali, silat, JKD grappling and a few other Filipino weapons training. as well as Western boxing. that's the current material practiced as a beginner in JKD. atleast what I'm being taught from my Sifu
Dude, I love your channel and your tips for improvement, I just started bjj classes and they help out a lot! not only in the technical side of it but also in the psychological. thanks so much man!
Speaking from experience, don't ever even get to that position if possible. He will pin you down with his sheer weight. Popping your hips does absolutely nothing. I had to wrestle with a 300 lb guy in Sambo class once and was only able to beat him by making him dive for the full mount and then slipping behind him for a rear naked choke. Every other time we wrestled if he went into a mount the fight was over, I was pinned and helpless. Great video though!
LOL make him "dive" for full mount and slipping behind him? Sounds like he doesn't know how to enter mount properly. If you've got powerful hips then you should be able to off balance ANYONE with a powerful hip bump, even 300lbs. However a good grappler will have his base ready, so it's all about timing and reading your opponent. If a heavy guy pins you, speaking generally , the best thing to do is an explosive hip bump and escape, forcing him to react.. If he's strong, he''ll just hold you there. I'd recommend working on your escapes and strengthening your hip extension. Too many guys have weak ass hips and no explosive power from them. The hips should be the most explosive muscles in the body.
Wow! Knee on Belly and this Side Control are a real nightmare for me, anytime i feel that pressure on my chest i think about to quit BJJ XD. Sometimes i roll with heavy guys like that man and i hate when they get me in that position. Thank you Master for this technich
Here's a great side control escape I did on a bigger guy. You get on your side facing towards their legs. Then push their head away while simultaneously you flop over on to your belly. Then get up in a sprawl position. Keep holding their head down. Just like how he's on his side then push their head flop over get up into a sprawl position. You do it in a burst as explosive as you can.
Good technical explaination, however, your big guy was not making you carry his weight. I'm a Wrestler at base. I rarely use the "knee in" Side Control...Any ideas from that reference?
I’ve been having the opportunity to train with some extremely high level bjj and wrestlers and I’ve been having an issue from side or passing, even when fighting these, the high level guys are quick to bring their hips up and step around to take the back or at least they try to and I have to restart at trying to get half guard
When you pass side control and get your hand on the back could you not also collapse your opponents far arm and take the back? I will definitely try this the next time I roll, I find I get trapped in side control a lot by bigger guys
Perfect for someone who's 130 and everyone is basically 300lbs, when they've got side control. Do you know any drills to instill the proper reaction for the crossface/underhood prevention before they end up in side control? Also, any tips for scarf hold?
Love this channel! I do have a question though: Often when I try to get on that side, the "iron squirrel" as you call it, I've had some opponents get a good grip on my pant leg and pull to try and flatten my hips. Do I just wait until they abandon the leg for the side control grip or is there something else I'm missing?
Today I rolled with a 350 pounds guy and im 280 but damn I couldn’t move once he got me on side control basically had me down for the whole round until the bell sounds (what a relief) but right away im here looking for chewy cuz his videos are helping me so much, and found out a mistake i made, he got the underhook on me but next Time i gonna keep rolling and apply these techniques thanks a lot chewy you my savior
Can you do a tutorial on the “kraken choke”? From gaurd, back and side control. A lot of videos already out there, they just don’t slow down the steps or get different angles.
I’ve been training a lot and a lot of the brown and purple belts I’ve rolled with don’t submit me. Is there a reason they don’t? Or am I just surviving that well? I figured I’d be getting submitted in all types of ways. I feel like it would help me understand better if they just did some crazy shit
It would be nice to see what your counter would be when your going for his back and he wizzers your underhook. Mainly because i would expect a wrestler to do that and do it well.
When you're flattened and he has an underhook, instead of trying to sneak that left hand in a tight space, try using sneaking your right arm close to your body so you can spin through and finish like an arm spin on the mat
+Stinky Puppy Thanks for the comment! I went to the spot you pointed it out and like you said. There's always what ifs and anything can happen. It's possible for them to switch their hips and potentially threaten the kimura. That said, I'm kind of a kimura guy and maybe I'm just sensitive to the movement. But I haven't been had anyone catch me in a kimura from this position.
Thanks. At my class I’m the lightest one, I’m 125 pounds and I grapple against guys who are 170+ lol. I’m getting better so it’s harder for them to get control
5:09 never use your palm….very true almost broke my wrist the other day doing this….your wrist cant withstand 100-200 or more lbs of pressure it will snap
@KennyTenny I totally agree the set ups work tho but some of his techniques don't work because he's a big dude himself so its a bit easier to leave out technicalities for smaller people
Only use the underhook to bump the guy forward, and then immediately go to the side to grab a single leg, not head on. Anyone really good will mount you if you you hold that underhook. So just use underhook to bump him forward and cut angle to the side to grab a leg
Lol. I was just in this position today. We started in side control, but his belly was so big I got my arm stuck underneath him. He wasn’t experienced enough to know what to do, I got into half guard finally before the round ended. 300 on your chest isn’t easy or comfortable.
My coach is a former D1 wrestler and 4 degree black belt under Ricardo Liborio. His side control pressure is unreal. I will have to try this, but I have found the best way to deal with it is at all costs don't give him side control. I'd rather try shrimp my hip away and attempt the forward row and regard...very worst I get caught in turtle for a minute. LMAO
Ribs awfully sore after heavier guy twice my weight had side control and was applying pressure, very uncomfortable. Only thing thought of was elbows to ground to lift a little of the weight so I could at least catch a breath.

First couple days he couldnt pass my guard and I’d submit him with a triangle or Kimura. He realized he can dominate me from side control. Gonna give this a try.
5 people like to be stuck on side control
lol, this made me laugh for some reason 😂!
nah it's a bunch of us big guys that dislike when people learn how to negate our advantage!
L Wapo 36 now hahah
That elbow peak-out is pretty solid. Been running an underhook clinic at the gym lately...
no clue how much this helps, I train in Jeet kune Do concepts, and my training buddy who I roll with, and my self are soon getting our yellow belts.
This is my tried and true escape against big guys as well. Love it!
Dude, I love your channel and your tips for improvement, I just started bjj classes and they help out a lot! not only in the technical side of it but also in the psychological. thanks so much man!
I nearly pissed myself when he said you need to act quicker you definitely don't want this big fucker on top of u squeezing you cause he strong lmao
Great concepts. Very easy to follow. Great video thanks.
I started training recently. i get stuck in side control all the time..
Brendan Bate ed sheeran is that you?
Two years later aaaannnnd?
@fortnut goon He is a black belt now
PS: But Taylor Swift friednzoened him anyway
@@eddietasker9110 He quit.
great video Sir - you're one hell of an instructor
Chewy looking like beast here. Looking in fantastic shape, maa Shaa Allah.
Thank goodness for this, i keep getting crushed by 260+ lb wrestlers and just can't get away before they eventually find a wrist and get an arm.
Heeyyy, love ur vids
Godzillarex Same here... only I was at wrestling
Great practical stuff on your channel. Appreciate your videos. Can't wait to work some of the positions.
I've got a long ways to go before I walk a mile in his chews but I'm grateful for every step.
"Chews wisely, grasshopper"
I got stuck in that position with a superstrong wrestler and I just intuitively know that that technique would have helped! Superb demonstration :)
Thank you for saving my breath last night! This was exactly what I needed.
Great video! Good clear practical instruction. Thanks. John (London, England).
Thanks John! Appreciate it.
@3:25...why not use your right hand to pull his left wrist and break down his base?
Wow! Knee on Belly and this Side Control are a real nightmare for me, anytime i feel that pressure on my chest i think about to quit BJJ XD.
Sometimes i roll with heavy guys like that man and i hate when they get me in that position. Thank you Master for this technich
I did MMA for 1 year before 2 years, I always struggled at grappling tecnique.
I think BJJ can be helpful for me.
I will definitely try this the next time I roll, I find I get trapped in side control a lot by bigger guys
very great ! also very well explain how to avoid the side control thanks you
@chewjitsu this is fantastic! the small bridges to get the arm in are going to be my go-to from now on! thanks for the video!!!
Question -- what is the weight difference that 2 wrestles could fight between them when both knows quite well the techniquE?
Perfect for someone who's 130 and everyone is basically 300lbs, when they've got side control. Do you know any drills to instill the proper reaction for the crossface/underhood prevention before they end up in side control?
Also, any tips for scarf hold?
Thank you for this vid. I roll with my jitz brother who is a blue belt and former wrestler. he always gets me in this. lol this video helps.
Love your channel bro always have great tips
I am... SO happy that this video exists.
Incredibly Helpful , Thank you
Love this channel!
Nice video! I really like your teaching style. Subbed.
+Daniel Jones Thanks brother, I appreciate the kind words.
Thank you! I will share this with my team
Great escape! Any adjustments for gi? Thanks Chew!
Phenomenal, sat down took notes, thanks Chewy!
Thanks. Only about a month in as a white belt and at 150lbs I get try to occasionally take on a much larger guy and it feels like a slow death.
There is no big people at my gym can’t try this move out
Love the videos. In scenario 1 (deep lat underhook) it looks like he can cleanly step over into full mount. Am I missing a detail that prevents that?
Love this guy... Such a specific teacher.
When you're flattened and he has an underhook, instead of trying to sneak that left hand in a tight space, try using sneaking your right arm close to your body so you can spin through and finish like an arm spin on the mat
Of course there are all kinds of what ifs, but isnt 4:43 arm position just giving a big guy the kimura?
+Stinky Puppy Thanks for the comment!
I went to the spot you pointed it out and like you said. There's always what ifs and anything can happen. It's possible for them to switch their hips and potentially threaten the kimura. That said, I'm kind of a kimura guy and maybe I'm just sensitive to the movement. But I haven't been had anyone catch me in a kimura from this position.
Thx this is Danny I taught this today and it was a success students loved it
Doesn't peeking out with the elbow exposes your arm to a kimura?
I’m 6’ 200lbs and there are guys who have flattened me that are 100lbs heavier and it really sucks to get crushed by them. I’m gonna try this.
Professor can you do a 300 pound full mount escape?
Helpful! Used these tips this morning
The sexual energy emitted by you slapping him was unreal
Dude lol
Tf?
Wtf
*facepalm*
@KennyTenny I totally agree the set ups work tho but some of his techniques don't work because he's a big dude himself so its a bit easier to leave out technicalities for smaller people
CHEWY FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!!! THANKS 🙏 A million
This helped alot thanks! I always get caught in side control and this was able to help me escape it! Aweosme
Lovely technique. Thanks for the upload
+postypower No problem. Thank YOU for the comment.
what is the beat playing at the beginning and ending of the video?
Great videos!! Very very very helpful ...
How do you prevent them from crawling around into front head lock during the escape. Keeps happening to me and it’s super annoying
I keep getting stuck under side mount, like every time. Thanks so much!!!
I hate fighting bigger guys, i always get injured as most are fairly reckless. I just tore my knee tendon grappling on the weekend
Good vid. Got any vids for a 280lb dude who has a hard time keeping 190lb guys from passing his guard?
I run into this all the time. I'll give this a try tomorrow. ;)
Thanks.
Dude you look freakin jacked here
I was actually kind of fat. It was right after thanksgiving when I filmed this. I was lifting heavy and eating big haha.
if that's fat. I wanna be fat haha. Cheers man goodstuff
Fine. I'll invite you over for thanksgiving and you can eat granny's homemade cinnamon rolls. You'll gain 10lbs in a weekend! 😂
+Chewjitsu mmmmmm... Cinnamon rolls.......
whats your weight/height?
