I installed Cloudready on AUE expired Chromebook - It's the same as Chrome OS

  • My Chromebook AUE date had just expired on my Toshiba Chromebook 2, so I decided to install Cloud Ready. I was expecting it to be easy, but it was a little harder than I thought it would be.
    This is because you need to open up your Chromebook and remove the write protect. This for me was the most annoying part. After that I could install Cloud Ready. What I was surprised about the most was that it's almost identical to Chrome OS.

    Many thanks Dan for this informative video and the links you gave. Just by coincidence I had the very same toshiba chromebook (my other is also an Acer Spin 713!) so this video was especially useful. I choose to install LInux Mint 20.2 which works very well except for the audio which doesn't work at all, including the headphone jack. However at least I have a bluetooth speaker which does play along nicely. I'm wondering whether you found your audio/headphone jack to be working under cloudready or did you have to use bluetooth as well?

      Hi Dave, Yes I had exactly the same issue. I tried to fix but could not. Like you said. A bluetooth speaker is the best and easiest workaround.

    Wow since Google acquired Neverware, I expected to see CloudReady all but rebranded or dismantled by now, but good to see it is still available. was considering putting it on some old MacBook’s and Dell E6400’s. wish I could put CR on some old android tablets I have now that Chrome updates have stopped due to the old android OS. do you have any thoughts on the FydeOS alternative to CR that was created by some Chinese developers?

    I've got exactly the same Toshiba Chromebook and the same dilemma about what to do with it! I've seen a lot of them for sale in eBay but I don't want to sell an unsafe device to an unsuspecting buyer. Could you possibly provide a link to the online resources you used to help you install Cloudready? I'd like to give it a go, but I don't want to "brick" my old laptop!

      Yes, I'm going to do an article about installing cloudready and will put the links in. I'll link the article when it's done.

    I want to say thank you for this video. About a year ago I installed Cloudready on an old $33.00
    HP SFF office computer. The computer works just fine with a Logitech K400r wireless keyboard, which has a trackpad. It boots in about 12 seconds and integrated with the network just fine. It works fine for entertainment and school with a large screen and full-size keyboard. My only problem is I have not figured how to run android apps, Do you have any Ideal how to accomplish this? Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

    • @ChromeComputingTV
      @ChromeComputingTV  2 года назад

      Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video. Android apps was only introduced in the last couple of years. Therefore, any Chromebook where the AUE has expired would never have had Android apps. Maybe in the future it might be added, but I'm not sure.

    thought neverware could see everything you do on it after installing cloudready

    • @ChromeComputingTV
      @ChromeComputingTV  3 года назад

      That sounds like some rumour that has got out of control. Neverware is now owned by Google. You're asked if you want to help make it better by sharing usage stats. Exactly the same as you get on Chrome OS and MS Windows. You have the choice to say yes or no.

    Long story short i never knew google screwed users by giving us an expiration date and i have now purchased 2 expired touchscreen Chromebooks. Do any of these os work for touch?

    • @ChromeComputingTV
      @ChromeComputingTV  2 года назад

      I'm not too sure about the touchscreen. You'd have to do some research to find out.

      Chrome OS Flex is installed on Mac and PC. Can't install on a Chromebook. CloudReady is your best option.

    • @jbh1404
      @jbh1404 2 года назад

      From general knowledge of Chrome OS & Chromium OS it would be more or less the exact same protocol, but Chrome OS Flex hasn't reached "stable" status so it wouldn't be recommended. Currently running Chrome OS Flex on a Dell Latitude 3189 (the non-Chromebook variant) and it's exactly like CloudReady but with the Chrome logo instead of Chromium, and the Chrome boot screen instead of CloudReady. No play store still so there's virtually no benefit ATM, might be better when it's actually fully released
