ChromeOS 116 has started rolling out and while we’re still looking for any other new stuff to talk about in this latest update, the one thing we’ve been a bit fixated on this week has been the new, decoupled Chrome browser for ChromeOS devices called Lacros.
The main thing you need to understand is this: Lacros separates Chrome (the browser) from ChromeOS (the operating system) so that updates can happen for your browser in step with other desktop Chrome versions in the future.

Perfect timing as I have been looking to use LacrOS on my old Chromebook, before passing it on to a family member...
I bought a Dell Chromebook from eBay for $56.00 and this device is in very good condition, also the last update for this system was ending and I checked out your uploaded video and downloaded Lacros and it's now uploaded to my refurbished Chromebook and added a few more years into this machine! And this was a big help and thank you for the information!
Well - that's very interesting. So I followed your advice and updated to 116 and changed to Lacros and what did I discover?
On my Lenovo Chromebook C340-11 all of a sudden the Nord VPN app, which has been a complete pain all Summer in France suddenly started working immediately and connecting to London in two seconds instead of the three minutes it had been taking. The RUclips app starts immediately. I slightly sense that the browser is faster, but, for me, the app improvement is a big deal.
Now, I should also mention RUclips Music, which historically has been slow to start and even slower to work with Bluetooth - I've just tried it and it also happened in under a second. Additionally the sound, which has been a problem when linking to a Logitech Bluetooth thing connected to my HiFi, now works at full volume and is not at all attenuated.
On balance this has been a totally BRILLIANT update.
I have a Samsung Chromebook Plus that had the OS updates end in August 2023. Last update was early August and the Chromebook still ran fine. Near the end of August two more security updates loaded and the Chromebook became useless. Web pages would take 20 seconds or more to load and the screen would go black for a few seconds before the page loaded. I had heard about Lacros but did not know how to load it until watching this video. After loading the 2 flags noted for Lacros the Chromebook is running perfectly again. No more delay for web pages and no more black screens. Extremely disappointed that security updates could cripple my Chromebook and being at end of support there was no way to fix the problem other than getting lucky with the Lacros flags. This Chromebook was within weeks of being in the recycle bin and would have been my last Chromebook.

Thank you for this. I enabled this on a Samsung Chromebook Pro which I love but has reached its AUE. It works fine. Nice to know I can continue to use the chromebook and continue getting updates for the browser.
Robby - continuing thoughts on your acknowledgement what a big change happens with 116, I found working across a Lenovo Chromebook, Chromebox, and Dell laptop with Windows has been transformed. This really is a fabulous change. I have to use Windows for a business, but being able to have a seamless use of Chrome across all computer applications and my Pixel 7 Pro makes things very easy.
I just tried this and I cannot believe how painless and seamless it was. There may be some nasty bugs that we haven't found yet but this pretty much feels like it's ready for release.

I tried it out today and Chrome/Lacros needed to install an update as well. Perfect. Very quick and seamless compared to a Chrome OS update that requires a full reboot. I did notice that the Double Down Casino app no longer works.

Ah! I didn't understand what benefit Lacross would bring to ChromeOS until I saw this video, especially how I can now switch between my multiple profiles within the browser instead of having to sign into those on the OS level. This is a great usability improvement for me. Thank you!
Profiles on ChromeOS are already fantastic. I sign in multiple users and can ctrl alt . Between profiles. Then hit "move window to other user" if I want them on the same screen. No more accidentally clicking links and it opening in the wrong profile.

Once Google's finished de-coupling Chrome from the "OS" parts, I almost wonder if this will bring wider Linux support for various applications. My only hope is that Google doesn't come up with some proprietary packaging format and instead uses an existing mature one from the variety offered by various Linux distros. Honestly I could see AppImage and Flatpaks being the answer here.
no. one of the main points of chrome os is the security and that has to do with no applications being able to run truly natively. just use the linux container
@@ad1340yt You sure about that? According to the Chromium OS docs, Lacros is running the Linux binary natively, not inside a Linux container. I mean it would make sense it'd run natively, ChromeOS uses a modified Linux kernel.
I like the idea of linux containers, but it gave me so much trouble with cross-apps and browser communication
Any clue how long the browser will be updated for on products not supported by Google? There has to be a point where a new version is incompatible with an old chrome os version

Wonderful vid and any advice on looking up the AUE as sometimes, if you can't find the model number or such, it can be time consuming as one would want to know this BEFORE a purchase. Have also heard that it is not when the chromebook model first comes out but when the processing unit contained with the chromebook was first issued. Thank you.
The aue is present in settings, under additional settings I believe.
Do you by any chance know whether its possible to get the productivity launcher anymore?
ive just done a powerwash and ended up with the old style launcher with screen full of icons which isnt great

Thank you for the video. I recently changed to Lacros. But what I found out since the update, if I am connected to the internet over my phone Data, ChromeOS tells me there is an update but I can't update. Button missing for the update.

Hello Robby, So I am new with ChromeOS Flex enabled Lacros.. right after that it I got update for ChromeOS too so now the versions are different from each other
120.0.6099.203 is the version of the OS and 120.0.6099.199 for Chrome Lacros.
My question is if that is normal because if I'm not mistaken you said that for security reasons the browser version will be a higher number.

In addition of that I like the experience even coming from windows. With the only exception that maybe my Bluetooth adapter(where my mouse and Keyboard is connected)until yesterday was strange. after I disabled smart lock and Lock when sleeping or lid is closed .it seems better (fingers crossed) 🙂

Thanks Robby - you noted AUE (Auto Update Expiration) here and it would be useful to have a video if you and the team have found a workaround. I've not found a machine at the right pricepoint to beat my Samsung Plus which is still going strong (i.e. good speed and battery life). The key thing in AUE is the "A" - I would be quite happy to manually install an update, should this be possible!?

I'm on Lacros. Can't tell any difference in usage. #flags settings have changed since video was made though. Some new options have appeared.
I have a Lenovo Chromebook 3 (that I bought because of your recommendation) and I switched to LaCros. At first it was fine, but then I noticed that if I put the laptop to sleep (closed the lid) and opened it back up, it would pause for literally minutes before it would start responding. Once I went back to the ChromeOS Chrome, it started acting normal again. So at least for this laptop, I wouldn't recommend it.
First time I'm hearing about this but this is quite amazing making Chromebooks more capable. I'll also keeping it white is all I could ask for

I got Chrome 116 running on my AUE expired Asus Chromebook Flip C302. It still has the yellow Chrome icon though. I now have both the coloured Chrome logo (v114) & the yellow logo (v116) in the program row at the bottom of the screen and the OS won't give me the option to remove the coloured logo.
Any chance this will finally get me 1080p or uhd video streaming on my chromebook?

I had this question. I think the answer is that will work only on chromebooks that have NOT reached end of support. My chrombook has been on EOS for a little over a year.

Update: LaCros works great, trackpad gestures are included and now it's updated to chrome 116, performance seems to be about the same as the regular browser
I have the flip c302 "cave" - currently on OS 114 after reaching end of life earlier this year - I've manged to get Lacros working, although I had to enable a few more flags now my Chrome version shows "Version 116.0.5845.110 (Official Build) lacros (64-bit)" - super chuffed this will keep my awesome Chromebook going longer
Yes! Do it. I have the same Asus C302 and my OS is at 114 but lacros is at 116. It works beautifully. As long as you have the 'lacros' flags available then turn them on. Saved me having to buy another chromebook.

Hi Rob, so i updated my chromebook to Version 116.0.5845.120 (Official Build) (64-bit) and then my Lacros is gone. I usually used it simultaneously with chrome browser since lacros could also open whatsapp web and another web based that i use for work (so each account for Lacros and Chrome browser). Any idea to have Lacros back?
I also followed the instructions and on 120, Lacrose no longer shows up
Finally a good move from Google. I did install flex on some but no Play store, so I still have 8 old chromebook (from friends and family) with no security that I needed to solve the issue of having no more security upgrade been available, because they where past the end date of support. They all end up going back to windows. I just upgraded my Asus chromebook tablet and it so simple. Know Iwill be able to solve the issue on that bunch of Chromebook and give them back to their original owner Thank

I would love to keep Lacros as a permanent setting. When I have it set up for Lacros, I can't use the Android apps, so until this is worked out, I'll regrettably have to put off using it for the time being.

I hope Google Chrome for ChromeOS gets updated at the same time as Google Chrome for MacOS, Windows, and Linux, which usually get updated before ChromeOS does.

So I enabled the lacros flags and you're right, there's not much difference. The difference I was hoping to see was the ability to pin tabs and have them show up again after closing and re-opening the browser lake it does in Windows. I thought that disconnecting the browser from ChromeOS would have solved this. Apparently not.
are you saying that all windows with open tabs are still not fully recovered if the browser is closed and reopened? (on Win10 I have like 5 chrome windows with 10 tabs each that always get recovered, doesn't work under ChromeOS 115)

Yes, when they are pinned. If you set "continue where you left off" it may work, but if you pin a tab the pinned tab should be available and pinned when you restart the browser no matter what startup setting you have set. I'm fairly sure this works in the Windows chrome version. I was told this didn't work because of the tight chrome integration with ChromeOS. I would think it should work now that chrome is separated from the OS.

@@jason-utuber1 "continue were you left off" doesn't work under ChromeOS like it does under Windows because on Chrome OS, the Browser is in fact the OS, thus by closing the chrome browser you're technically no quitting the browser but just closing all chrome windows with website tabs. After thinking about it the behavior makes sense but isn't very intuitive for someone coming from Windows and it's also inconvenient because I sometimes want to close "the browser" to free up resources but I now need an extension to recover my session, I was hoping this behavior would change with Lacros

My Chromebook, Acer R13 CB5-312T-K8Z9 (32-bit, 4-core, mediatek M8137C?? chip) but otherwise is still receiving updates and now at 118. Maybe i’ll try it on my old HP chromebox.

When I tried this on a Dell I clicked "Lacros is the only browser" and reset but Chrome still looks the same and is version 103 so how do you tell the difference if nothing changes? It never changed, still the same version of Chrome!
I wonder if you can get Opera on chromebook?
This is possible now if you enable Linux. But I was wondering the same, if other browsers will be supported as installs instead of Linux commands

Been playing with Lacros on my Pixelbook. Waiting to see what happens when it Aue's.
If I am correct, until onw the LaCrOs version you can update to is always the LaCrOs that comes with the OS release, so if you then choose LaCrOs to be beta its version will be one step higher. And stay there.
If the LaCrOs browser is untied, it would (I think) be possible to keep it updated.
If not, the Linux browser will.

Aside from Chrome and ChromeOS being two different entities, what are the benefits of Lacros? Can you install different browsers? Will Lacros replace and come out of the box on all Chromebooks in the near future?
I think we will have to wait to answer those questions. It’s the same one I have.
It looks like Lacros will be a traditional OS, at least the way we can install whatever we want but I haven’t seen it run in the wild so I don’t think there’s anyone that can answer that question now.

I have been using Chromebooks for years. I am curious what you say to people who say, "I would never use a Chromebook because Google can see everything you do and learn everything about you." I have my come back statement, but I am curious what yours is.

When LaCrOs is going to be the default browser, I hope updating the browser isn't going to feel like the update waiting times you got in Windows (or in a less annoying way Linux). Updating the whole ChromeOS is so fluent since it updates the "other" instance of the OS that is not up and running, so next time you enter the OS you're in the new one.
In earlier versions of ChromeOS when I started LaCrOs it would clearly take a longer time to open it up. Whereas the standard browser would open right away.
On my Chromebook I also have the Linux Chrome browser in beta as well. With that I know it takes longer to load, once I clicked the icon for it, because Linux needed to load first. Okay, I never bothered to get sound in the Linux version but it was fun just to look ahead without any risk.
That said: sound in the Linux browser on a Chromebook, anyone?

All I can say is that a Lenovo Chromebook (C340-11) has suited me for years. Ir has a touchscreen which is great for playing online Backgammon and Bridge. It connects well with several large 34in and 40in screens I have, and with the 116 update and Lacros browser works very smoothly. I paid about USD340 for it in the UK. Were it to break I would get whatever the Lenovo replacement is. I use Google One with it.
I should add it is surprisingly good with Microsoft, where I use it to access an investment business where I am a partner, when I am not using my work-supplied Dell.

Attempting this change on expired Chromebook Asus C302 running OS114. Enabling Lacros both tabs, system rebooted nothing changed chrome still showing chrome version 114. Is this normal?

Finally the migration has become seamless. However, there is still a feature missing from ChromeOS with Lacros, and that is the ability to provide additional input methods via Chrome extensions. Currently there seems to be no way to enable the compose key on the OS level, and while there was an extension to do that, this won't work any more once Lacros is fully rolled out.

So let me get this right, this is a chrome browser for a browser based OS?
I'm running Chrome Version 116.0.5845.110 (Official Build) (64-bit) on my Kubuntu 22.04. Chrome updates are very transparent and don't need to sign in again.
Maybe this will finally let me play Kanopy movies on my Chromebook without having to run the Android app.
Any Apps updates, (and system updates), are mainly to upload information, detailed browsing history, searches, etc, to the servers for marketing and other investigating and research entities.
Google should've done this in the first place
