  • All Chromebooks come with an AUE date. You may find the AUE date frustrating but it's 100% necessary for Chrome OS to continue to offer great new features.
    The good news is you do have plenty of options for your Chromebook once the AUE date has expired. The options you have in 2022 are much better than the options available a couple of years ago.
    Essentially, you can now use your Chromebook and it will be pretty safe to do so.
    In this video I'll go through all the options you have available and the advantages and disadvantages of each one. By the end of the video, you should hopefully realise your Chromebook is still usable in 2022 even after the AUE date has expired.

    Thanks so much for this valuable information. I've had my Chromebook for about 2 years now and when the pop-up showed that it was on it's last update I was really disappointed. Thanks. Yes, a year ago it wasn't really a viable option but for any Chromebooks with an AUE in 2022 and beyond. Then I see it as the best option available. It's the only way to keep the OS secure by sticking with Chrome OS whilst staying secure online with browser updates.

    Thank You for your great videos. Very informative. I have an Acer 14 CB3 Chromebook that hit AUE in June 2022. Set up LaCrOS and it was working fine. But in the last few weeks, it no longer receives Updates. So I turned on the Linux Development Environment and installed Google Chrome for Linux. The Chromebook is now running the latest version of Google Chrome and continues to receive updates. The browsing experience is a smidge slower than what it was on ChromeOS. However, all my Chrome Extensions function as expected and the Chromebook continues to play audio and HD Video without any issues. The ONLY issue I have experienced is a known one. The built in WebCam no longer functions. That issue is unlikley to be resolved any time soon. Not a problem for me but should be noted. Cheers from the Land Down Under.

    Next month my chromebook goes AUE and I installed lacros and I've had no issue using it. Everything just works. It updates on its own and feels good. Not having OS updates like Windows or Macs doesn't actually hurt you since ChromeOS is just linux at it's core and Linux tends to be more secure anyways. I think I could get another year or more as long as my machine still works. Not everyone can afford a brand new computer so Lacros makes the most sense right now for me. Good video here and helpful information for those who need it.

When I put lacros on it updated in the background to version 101. This lacros browser has been around since Chrome 92 or 93 I think but I think it's ready to be the stock chromeos browser. The AUE date should depend on the hardware, nor some arbitrary date based on when the Chromebook was first sold. If you have a 2 gig ram and 16 gig storage that's one thing however if you have 8 gig ram and 64 gig storage your AUE date should reflect the difference in hardware. Simply put the better the hardware the further away the AUE date should be.

    If I have a different OS than Chrome, I can install a Chrome browser that gets updates. So what gives? If I do my banking on a Chrome Browser installed on a Windows OS, my google account still has my passwords and the browser gets updates, but Windows is notoriously full of vulnerabilities. So why can't I just get updates for my browser on my Chromebook?. This was originally sent in before you mentioned Lacros. Why doesn't Chrome just let you know if it can extend your AUE as long as your hardware is still viable. That's more honest than planned obsolescence.

    Hi, thanks for the video. I have a Dell Chromebook 13 (7310) and it stopped getting updates in June 2021. I've been stuck on Chrome OS 91. I have 3 flag options for Lacros: 1) Lacros Support, 2) Lacros Stability, and 3) Lacros web apps. I have enabled the first and third one, and put the second on on "more frequent updates." I've also tried different variations of enabling Lacros Support but not Lacros Web Apps, and "les frequent updates." The Lacros browser is available, and I can open it and use it, but it doesn't allow updates. There's an oval icon in the upper right corner that says "Update" (in red) with the three vertical dots next to it, and when I click on it, it says Chrome can't update. The version it shows for the Lacros browser is: Version 91.0.4450.0 (Official Build) dev (64-bit)
    Do you have any advice for this? Thank you

    • @ChromeComputingTV
      @ChromeComputingTV  2 года назад

      I don't have any specific info for this. It may be that Lacros updates in 2021 were not taking place. If your Chromebook stopped getting updates in 2021 you can only take advantage of the functionality available at that date. However, this is my understanding based on looking at it logically, so maybe look into your specific issue further and you may find information that is useful.

    Running GalliumOS Linux on a MrChromebook firmware flash. Should have done it earlier. It's a better computer now.
    If your Chromebook was made much after 2015, that trick gets harder to do.
    And, I hate to stir the teapot, but as somebody who has developed everything from low-level serial card firmware to BIOS to operating system code since the 8086 and 6502 were the hot new processors on the block, 99.9% of end of life dates are arbitrary, unnecessary, and serve to do nothing but saturate our landfills with perfectly usable electronic equipment.
    There is a dance between hardware manufacturers and commercial software developers, and it's a dance that you are not invited to. There is no legitimate reason that your scanner had to stop working because Microsoft Windows 7 replaced Windows XP. If your broadcom network chip functions until the operating system is updated, there's a reason why. And that reason is not security or software. That reason is because you are meant to only operate that piece of equipment for a short time, then buy more.
    I blame us. Increasingly, we are content to work hard to buy equipment that we end up not really owning, but just have the right to use for a short period of time.

    • @ChromeComputingTV
      @ChromeComputingTV  Год назад

      It appears that is possibly the case at the moment. Lacros is a work in progress and looks like it will take some time before it's officially launched. Therefore, it may be the case that you can only ever be 2 updates in front of the OS. If the OS stops receiving updates your Lacros browser will stop receiving updates. This is essentially because it's still a work in progress. You don't need Linux to use Lacros, which is great for anyone who has a Chromebook that doesn't come with Linux, however, it limits your options once Lacros stops getting updates. If your Chromebook has Linux, I'd possibly consider installing a browser via Linux.

If that's your real face, pat yourself on the back because whatever age-defying cream you are using is really working well.

There's an oval button on the top of the browser that says "Update", but when you click on it, it says "Chrome couldn't update to the latest version...". I can't seem to find any way to manually update it, and at this point it is stuck on version 105.0.5195.75. Restarting does nothing to trigger an update. It's been months that it is like this, and it has been restarted many times. Wondering if you have any suggestions?

      If your Chromebook has not reached its AUE date. Use the standard built in Chrome browser. If your AUE date has expired. Enabling Lacros will let you use the Chrome Linux browser, which gets updates.

    Does Norton make outdated chrome books safer?

    • @ChromeComputingTV
      @ChromeComputingTV  Год назад +3

      Whether a Chromebook is outdated or not. It's still the case that software cannot be installed, so I'm not 100% convinced you would need virus protection. However, others may state virus protection is a safe option once updates stop if you can't install Lacros. So the only person who can really answer it because it depends on your own approach to risk is yourself. There is no harm in installing free virus protection,. The key is to only use trusted Android apps and even more importantly. Make sure any browser extensions are safe. Personally speaking, if I was using an out of date Chromebook and did not have the option to install Lacros. I'd be removing all extensions and would not be logging into bank accounts online.

    The Lacros doesn't work. It just gives a duplicate browser that needs to be reinstalled, but it can't reinstall to anything, on an old chromebook with out Linux support build in. It's a total waste recommending this thing. Chromebooks are worst than Windows Laptops, which is saying a lot.

    • @sallyj4209
      @sallyj4209 Год назад +1

      @@shanedaniel7 The security updates are more of a upgrade to features of modern web browsers, where it may store your passwords, credit cards, etc... These programs become vulnerable to modern hackers, as the technology becomes more evident. You can think of it as a factory auto theft device. You wouldn't have a problem if the car is parked in a low crime area, but if it's parked in a high crime auto theft area and you still want to remotely start your car, then you'll have to invest in a higher security system. The problems comes when your old system is no longer in warranty and the dealer will not spend any time on those outdated devices/ AUE, mainly due to the cost of doing so, with out the active warranty. The way around this is to get a after market brand, however the problem with a Chromebook, is there is nothing under the hood to attach another security device to or in older Chromebooks, no OS. At this point you can opt for a new Chromebook, which has Android Linux or rebuild the computer to use Ubuntu/Debian Linux. The good side is Ubuntu/Debian Linux is Free and has the same security upgrades. Android Linux requires you buy another computer and just like before, you'll get a warranty and not have to do anything. The main idea is Ubuntu/Debian Linux has the same security upgrades and Chrome OS is no better than Fire Fox with Lubuntu, (18.04.05) Microsoft Edge with Windows 10/11, etc... Apple is a different story and I won't include it. The security updates are really based on what you do. Online banking is going to use the highest security levels, but a online store will not block out old web browsers from making a purchase. Therefore, they'll use high security levels, but not so high that you'll need a new computer or at least right now. If there is a Windows 14, etc... future, then you probably won't be able to use an old Chromebook, for anything. Right now you just need to be careful of what sites you use as in where you park a car. Apple has the best security and Chromebooks are not going to be as good. Chromebooks usually have low specs and you'll never really be able to keep up with modern security, unless you're willing to buy a new one every few years. There are options to side load a light weight Linux to a Chromebook, remove the write protection screw and wipe Chrome OS and replace it with a light weight Linux or upgrade the system hardware and install Windows. The security option is don't store any credit card information, etc... on a Chromebook, avoid extensions other than Google and reputable sites (Tubi, Pluto, etc.) extensions, ie avoid Cloud Computing. It's safer to keep information on a flash drive than a Google Drive, etc....

    Can't you just install a backported new browser onto the default Chrome OS install, after enabling dev mode from Debian?
    My understanding is that dev mode enables accessing Debian repositories. As per my experience with the Debian project, they maintain backported repositories, just for this very reason of updating specific programs while keeping the OS back. This would save the trouble of opening up the laptop to remove the copywrite screw, which an I understand not all Chromebooks have but can be ascertained via running a downloadable script.
    And for that matter, if Chrome OS is just Debian, I don't see why you couldn't just update the repositories apt uses and force an upgrade to a newer release rather than going through this tedious and seemingly unnecessary labour of installing an entirely different OS. Perhaps, hardware support via the Chrome OS software wouldn't be there, but the rest of Debian should.
    Of course, I like Debian and comfortable with it, and therefore don't see the reason for installing a Linux based OS when you already have one, unless it would to install something innovative such as Fuschia OS.
    Lastly, if Cloudready is just the continuation of Chrome OS, which is Debian, I don't see why somebody didn't make a simple migration procedure. Seems they really dropped the ball there, and something I've never had an issue with on Debian.
