Its funny, I learned snowboarding as an intermediate rider on a Slash Straight. I considered it a middle of the road flex, loved to butter it, and it felt very playful overall. After 5 years on Yes snowboards I tried it again for nostalgia. F*ck I couldn't ride it :D I could barely get it on edge. And it was only a 161, and I had a 163 back in the days.
Bear with me here, trying to learn… what mph distinguishes fast boards in regards to charging, all mtn (directional twin) and carver? I broke my Salomon burner 161 from ~ 2007 and have analysis paralysis trying to find a replacement. My sweet spot is 30-50mph in Tahoe, 215lbs, 5’11”, 12 boot. I stay in bounds and away from crowds. No park or rails. Comfortable at 50mph but not trying to intentionally exceed that speed. Powder is obviously da best but it’s a blue moon that I catch epic conditions. Been riding since 96 but admittedly have only ridden a handful of boards. Salomon burner worked great, but wouldn’t mind something a hair softer. Im old and don’t know what lingo describes my riding, I can carve if the snow is decent however I seem to find myself charging/skidding over bumpy crap most of the time. Been watching hrs of your vids and keep coming back to nitro pantera, jones flagship/flagship pro, freecarver 9000 and capita bsod. Am I on the right path?if not, could help point me in the right direction? I’d be forever grateful!
Honestly you probably just need something slightly above middle of the road, tapered, little camrocker in it, and some kind of impact plate underfoot in the core to help dampen.
As a rider of the Commissioner, I can say it is smoking fast torpedo and you'll need to be on your game 100% all the time. I usually switch it out around lunch to easier board to ride.
You mentioned the Kazu, compared with the BSOD, which one would you recommend as a second board to use on and outside the slope on pow days? I've also been eyeing up a couple of the Korua boards but having a hard time choosing. There are not many shops close to where I live which is why I will go with one of these brands. I'm an advanced rider, been going since the 90s, just never really paid attention to what I rode because I couldn't afford to, but now I can. So where should I spend my cash? I'm 5''10 and weigh between 185-200 depending on how much money I have to buy food.
Hey Avran, hope your season is going great man. I'm on a 159 ride berzerker and loving it - wondering if there is a board out there that charges as fast/smooth regular and switch as the berzerker does regular. Also if said board could carve hard at speed and hit some jumps/side hits/trannies that'd be perfect. Looking for full camber with lots of power.
Any suggestions? Twin or directional twin are both okay. I've already got a dwd team for park and just grabbed a t.finder for family shred days - id like a personal daily driver that is smooth, will handle hard pack groomers and rutted out side runs at charging speed regular and switch, and still has some freestyle flare for jumps and side hits. Ideally it skips over rutted out terrain but has lots of power and stability when put on edge. I know you're busy as hell - any suggestions are appreciated, thanks Avran.
You have a Ride Berserker! I got one last season with some Ride A10 bindings I got a few seasons ago and Ride Fuse boots. Can you tell I like Ride’s gear? It’s a darn good time. The Commissioner has a race base, as does the split pig. I have a split pig and it goes zoom zoooooom 😂
Excellent info ! Came across your review of the Nitro SupraTeam from 6 years ago. Everything you said and your emphasis of "this board ffffuckin rips" is exactly what im lookin for. Is there a modern board that gets the same rating? Currently ripping LT Hotknife and Nidecker area both based of your spot on review. Thanks
Id really like to see an Asym Twin comparison video with the Rides boards, the 2 Gammas, and the Greats. You could include the Mervin boards I guess but I'm not a fan of their profiles. Im looking at a Zero or Twinpig for a new park board (maybe a normal Gamma although I can find last years Ride boards for half off rn) and probs a Gamma APX to replace my beat up Greats for everyday all mtn
@@barrbozz a top 5, but theres really no single best board in any category, its all dependent on riding style. Like I'm not gonna consider a Mervin board or something flat cause I want camrock but would ride full camber with lifted contact points. Asym is a small enough category that you could make a video talking about every board and where it shines from park to all mtn to pow. Where like directional twins prob benefit from a top 5 or 10 video cause theres way too many of them to talk about all of them
If you want an Asym for park and Ride’s are on sale then get the Zero. Avran hates the TwinPig. TwinPig was my first board, it’s just ok, way more popular than it should be. Yes Greats is great, but more all mountain daily driver. Wouldn’t buy that board for the use case you’re looking for. Ride Benchwarmer is also asym but will be too aggressive for you as it’s more high end freestyle board. Capita used to make a board called the Asymulator which was super cool, discontinued now though. Ride Zero is what you’d want. Both Avran and TC highly rate it too.
@@PacketOfCereal Yeah I was heavily leaning towards the Zero over the Twinpig cause Im a size 8 boot, and I dig last years Zero graphic. And a Gamma APX to replace my Greats. the assymulator seemed cool, but it had the least amount of sidecut radius difference of all of the asym boards I looked at and I didn't like my Mercury
Great vid as always, any insight into the differences between the Commissioner and something like the Souly Grail? Looking to add something big to my quiver for the season currently switching between a few year old Super DOA and a Valhalla ( not including my split ) but I the Valhalla is actually better for icy conditions over chop imo
Ya the sidecut is gonna be the noticeable difference imo. Coming from a commissioner with an ~11m sidecut even down to say an 8-9m sidecut the board will feel vastly more apt to turn. If you wanna do long fast soul turns get the souly grail, if you wanna laugh at chunder and go Mach 11 go commissioner. You will give up a good bit of maneuverability and rideability to gain the speed and aggression.
Great reviews..been running the k2 slay blade as a daily driver for last 15 years..is defo a 10 flex..will it be similar to the candle? Will the bsod feel like a toy compared to the SB? Thanks

Trying to figure the difference between the slash vertical and straight as they seem to fill a roughly similar role, straight is more hard charging/fast/steamroller and the vertical is more pow fun with the 3d nose? they look fairly same same. I've already got a vertical and after something a little more hard charging, I've nothing but good things to say about slashes customer service and build quality so would be happy with another one

Move to the mountains, devote your life to snowboarding, make a schedule that allows you 100 to 200 days a year on snow. Not that hard if you are willing to sacrifice and make it work. Most people will take the path of least resistance.
My dude how do you think or feel weight plays into these bad boys me weight 290 would that help offset some of that bucking you got from the arbor if you weighed more like my weight
