Thanks for trying this out! Actually, I’d like to hear your thoughts on the Sigma 18-35 on the R7 without the speed booster, so with just the regular adapter. I’m thinking this would be a great studio lens for talking heads and b-roll.
Will work on a video dedicated to the 18-35 soon! The past few days have been my first gigs using the 18-35 on the r7 (No speedbooster) and it is definitely going to be my most used lens with this camera for studio work and probably run and gun docs too.
@@ReachFilms Ohhh a dedicated video would be great! I went for the RF 24-105 f4 as my main R7 lens. Killer combo I’ll have a video up later this week 😃 But… the sigma 18-35 is sooo tempting with f1.8, even though I swore to stick to RF glass…
Thanks for this great information. I'm with you on the Canon VND filter - I love it. I have metabones EOS R speed booster, so will be interesting to see how that one goes on the R7.
Thanks for sharing! I don't have the metabones one as they have always said that it was made for the specific crop of the EOS R, that being said the crop on the eos R is so close to the actual sensor size of the R7 it makes total sense to pair!
The problem with he viltox speedbooster is that, it doesn't exist. Today I finally decided to purchase a metabones speedbooster paying more than double the amount of money for viltrox, at first it didn't seem to work properly, the autofocus and data info etc they did not work. Then once upgrading it's firmware to the latest version, I got everything running and it works great with my R7, plus there's this extra control dial on the adapter which I use to control the ISO which is fantastic. I wish Viltrox speedbooster was a real launch but unfortunately it's a paper launch. I could not buy it anywhere for over a year now and this thing doesn't exist outside the reviewer world. Great video however. Since they both work in a similar fashion, your video also helped me too. Thanks for that and Cheers!
I'd love to see comparisons between the R7 w/speedbooster against the R6 or even the R. It could be worth it to compare it to itself as well just to see picture quality difference. I'm questioning whether or not to get a full frame R series or the R7. I have full frame EF lenses that I'd use with either but at the R7's price point I might just make the jump to a used R6.
@@ReachFilms I think they're comment was asking to compare the r7 with a Speedbooster to a stock R6. Although, the R6 could benefit in any of it's cropped shooting modes from the Speedbooster. But that should probably be its own video 😅😂
Great Video!! I enjoy it... Don you think, if you use the speedbooster with the sigma 18-35mm f1.8 and than with the Electronic Stabization ON, if the vignet will still be present? I'm curious to see that!! In another han, does the Canon r50 has foccus breathing?
Thanks for this video. I have the same problem with the viltrox speedbooster. So far I haven't heard of the problem in any video and thought it was my adapter. I just couldn't find a firmware update to fix the problem. I can only use the EF24-105IS with the speedbooster on my R7 to get smooth handheld footage. I think I'll send it back and buy the Canon Speedbooster. Can't wait month for a firmware update.
Some sad news that I just found out: Canon has told Viltrox and other 3rd party manufacturers to stop all sales of lens (not sure if it's exclusively to AF lenses). This includes the awesome Vlitrox Speedbooster. BH, Adoroma has them listed as discontinued. I had to get mine from eBay as there is now a shortage. Some sad new indeed and how low will Canon go...
It will be interesting to see if the actually support the R7 or if they need to make a new adapter to support the better auto focus and cpu that the r7 has
Hi Geoff. Thank you for very useful video. I would like to ask you to review Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art + Viltrox EF-R3 Speed Booster on the Canon R7. Thank you in advance.
Really helful video!! Thanks!! Please I have a question, or mostly a doubt: As we can see with the sigma 18-35mm with the Viltrox Speed Bosster is vignette at 18mm (in the Eos R7 or any Eos Aps-C), if you apply the "Electronic IS, standard mode" stabilization that adds only a 10% crop in the camera, would it still vignette? Or if only the "Enhance, Electronic IS" stabilization (that come with the 30% crop) would work without vignette?
Thanks for the video! Do you find that it returns the softness and shallow depth of field that we expect in a full frame camera when you put one of these full frame lenses on the r7?
Deleted my last comment as thought it was on a different video. As far as shallow depth of field I think that gets pretty close to the full frame look, not exactly the same but close. As far as the sharpness, the images won’t be as sharp as full frame wide open on most lenses. However as you stop down the sharpness should start to be similar
Thank you for convincing me not to buy a speedbooster. The one thing I might suggest to try is how it works with video cropped in the higher frame rate 4K where you may or may not appreciate the shortening of focal length. Want to go to an extreme? Try it with a 600 or 800mm f/11 and see if the image is destroyed in trade for the stop of light gained. If it works out that this combo works, bird lovers will appreciate the notice.
So I’ve noticed with the Canon 24-70 f2.8 ii, between ‘17mm’ and 24mm, the ibis is like completely disengaged and the sensor just seems to float. As soon as you hit 24mm it locks in super stable. Very weird. On my c70 bodies, the Sigma 18-35mm does display f1.2.
Yeah I normally film at a lower shutter speed which hides it, but I just got back from a gig and had the shutter at 180 degrees so it shows up in this vid unfortunately

I have this one, but it only works with my EF 100mm F2.8L and EF 40mm STM. I also have the 17-40 and 70-200 and it does not work, thus it keeps flickering the Aperture and stops the lens down at click rather than speedboosts.
I recently picked up the Canon 0.71x with the plan to buy a used 24-70/2.8ii. Iv used it on the 70-300L and it works fine. Will rent the 24-70/2.8ii this weekend but I don’t see why it won’t work. Just wish the message to accept on startup wasn’t shown but that’s a small thing
@@mvp_kryptonite I was speaking specifically of the Viltrox version. No reason the canon will not work. The only thing I can see if some lenses working wonky which is why they say it isn’t supported
The viltrox IBIS problem could be malfunctioning on the 24-70 because it has lens IS and it tries to make joint focus, no? What about the viltrox IBIS with the 18-35 (that has no IS) so the camera can use only the sensor IS and make it usable? I did not see you try this option btw thank you so much for this video, it's perfect, answered many questions I had!!! :)
My guess is that the Lens IS + Sensor IS only works with RF lenses, it's not so much because of the viltrox/standard adapter (and this is something they kind of refer in canon's website). So for IBIS and ef mount it only works with lenses without IS. Please prove me wrong, this is just a theory!
Yes. Thanks for the review. Using viltrox focus reducer don’t seem to make much sense with R7. Staying with EF-RF converter, hopefully ibis is usable with 18-35mm. Would love to see the outcome, before my camera arrives.

Yeah it’s technically Ef-s but it functions as EF, as most ef-s lenses have a bit that protrudes a bit past the optical point and cannot be used with speedboosters, where the sigma art lenses can definitely be used with speedboosters as we have been doing it since the micro four thirds days with metabones. If you plan on shooting photos wide open, just go for a normal adapter or the VND one. I wouldn’t use the speedbooster with that lens since it’s a crop lens and you are just using it for stills, you are going to get massive vignetting
