Ended up buying the R7 and Meike adapter based on your videos. I had been chewing over whether to get an fx30 or R7 as a b-cam. Price difference here in Ireland is a lot more than in the US, and I have a lot of Canon glass, so in the end I've gone with this setup. Thanks for the vids!
Yes, exactly. The price difference between Fx30 and R7 is enormous in Europe. I actually asked Sony, and they told me to ask the local retailers. I asked them, and they told me to ask Sony. Being accustomed to Canon and watching Josh's videos, I plan on putting the same setup together. Are you satisfied with the R7 and the Sigma combo?
RUclips recommended your video because I searched for the R7 the other day, but then saw that you had a sustainable farming channel?! What?! That's so cool!!! Subscribing to stay updated for future videos. Great job on this breakdown Josh!
Hi Josh. Thanks so much for this review. This is going to be my next lens after much deliberation and research. I currently shoot on a Canon 80D and R7. I make youtube videos and also shoot stills for events and food photography as a side hustle. It has been an interesting journey going from an entry-level (400D) to enthusiast (80D) to mid-range (R7). I can't justify the expense of an R5 or R6 (yet). Ultimately I would like to run the R7 and get an R6 Mark ii as I think they would compliment each other nicely. I do want to move into creating more video so this lens seems to be a great option. I have found that the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM works really well on the R7. I have the Tamron 35mm 1.4 SP which pairs beautifully with my 80D. I recently shot a cooking competiiton and having the two-camera set up worked great. Can't wait to play with the Sigma 18-35 and see how it performs on both bodies. Thanks for your review!
I never used that lens, but clearly a super star for for crop factor cameras ;) That Variable ND adapter is really cool looking as well and I'm looking forward to that review!
Thanks for this vid! Planning to get an R7 with this lens and adapter or go with 50-100mm 1.8 first then get this lens after. I hope you get to review the Sigma 50-100 1.8 as well.
Thanks for another video Josh! Following all your R7 content, I’m after this lens and the Sigma 35 f1.4 to pair with the R7. The sound when focusing is definitely not a dealbreaker in my opinion. I can work with that. Incredible how this one holds up after almost 10 years in the market 💪🏼 big hug from Portugal.
You are very welcome! Yeah, it's amazing how well that lens holds up. Thanks for watching!

Excellent video, thank you. What about this lens (Sigma 18-35) and Canon R10? R10 doesn't have IBIS. Would you recommend an alternative with lens image stabilization? Thank you!
Speed boosters are so cool! Just need a bit of post production to iron out the fringing (from a photography perspective, not tried it with video yet) I wish Canon just supported them really on mirrorless R bodies
@@Josh_Sattin gotcha. I saw in some tests with the 11-16 the IBIS was out of control, hopefully that was just an isolated case since I'm hoping to use that lens with the R7 eventually
I would not be surprised about the IBIS on wider focus lengths. Canon's IBIS is known to have the wobbly corners on super wide lenses. I was using it with this lens at 18mm.
Great video, just what I was looking for! 😃 I’ve been hovering over the buy now button for this lens for a while… but ultimately, went for the new RF 24mm f1.8 that just released.
Hi Josh, I have been following your r7 series. Every content is amazing. I have a query. I have never used a camera before, only smartphone. Planning to buy R7 and this Sigma 1.8 lens with Meika Adaptor. Will this be good for portrait and landscape photography? I don't plan on video shooting. First thought of R6 but that will be expensive for first camera. I will also buy rf 100-400 for birds but we will see abt that. Also should I go for this 18-35 or tamron 24-70 f2.8
It seems like you have a long list of potential situations that you will need your camera for. Unfortunately I don't do much photography, but most people usually use somewhere around 50mm or 85mm on full frame for portraits. You probably won't need the Meike VND adapter unless you are planning on doing video. Some people like very wide for landscape as well as a telephoto. If you don't need wide then something like a 24-70 2.8 might be more versatile.
I'm about to get this exact combo after a year of saving!! It looks amazing. One question though and I've been battling these past weeks, I just cannot find a budget gimbal to pair this up with, someone recommended the Ronin S but that's too expensive for me right now, I searched more and I was about to buy one called Feiyu AK200s but the company told me this combo might be a bit too long for it so they recommended another one in the same range as the Ronin, so I'm back at square one, the length seems to kill it for me at my current budget, those pro gimbals are too much. If only Canon would let Sigma make the RF version of this lens, it would solve everything; no adapter needed, smaller and with all the new technology, it would be a beast.
Thanks Josh, I love your content. so far all people have done with the r7 is shoot birds. I plan to get either RF primes with a tilta matte box. I would love the drop in ND but those older EF lense are slow with the AF.
You're welcome! Some of the more recently released EF lenses have pretty quick autofocus. Can't go wrong with RF lenses though. I wish there were more RF-S lenses.
@@philipthao8527 Yeah that would be great, but it's not physically possible based on the flange distance. The only reason you can get a VND adapter is because you are adapting a DSLR lens (EF) to a mirrorless body (RF). There has to be space in there to work properly, which allows companies to put filters in there.
Good video, definitely following. I’ve had my eyes on a new camera and the R7 and that Meike combo is starting to grow on me…. Leaning towards the BMPCC 6k Pro, but Canon’s AF and the smaller form factor the R7 has, plus cheaper price, really makes it tempting….
@@Josh_Sattin same here. Yes, manually focusing is more a "professional filmmaker" thing but screw that, as a professional documentary filmmaker who does tons of interviews and run and gun, AF is crucial.
Others might have said this but I'd just like to pitch in a say. That autofocus noise is very decent for how old the lense actually is. I mean, outdoor I could not hear it and indoor was only slightly noticable when you werent talking and it's an almost dead room. So with just a small bit of room noise or as outdoors with birds, trees and cars moving etc. It wouldn't be noticable, I believe.
Great content. Can you get background blur with this lense and the r7 in a small studio set up where the back ground is around 2 metres behind the subject ???? Tks a lot
Thanks! Background blur or creating a shallow depth of field comes from three things: aperture, focal length and distance from camera to subject. I can't tell you how blurry your specific background will get, but I would recommend using the longest focal length you can (move the camera to get the right framing) and shoot at the lowest aperture.
I have that lens. It's cool, but it is nowhere near the image quality of the Sigma 18-35. As I mentioned, I am a fan of zoom lenses in general for their versatility.
My oldest EF lens is one from the 35mm era. I think it's from the early or mid 90's. I think it's 35-70mm. It's so funny to hear it autofocus on video. I should record the sounds to use a robotic sounds in my Foley sound effects folder of my custom sounds.
Hey Josh, unfortunately I discovered your channel a while ago, fortunately I've seen almost all your videos and especially those regarding the R7. I bought the same exact combo that you use in this video. Coming from the 70D, the IQ of the R7 is mindblowing. Unfortunately my 18-35 goes crazy when activating IBIS. R7 is 2 days old, and I upgraded to 1.3.1 FW from the 1st hour i bought it. Any idea whats going on? Thanks and keep making quality videos.
@Josh_Sattin so it's a firmware update needed for the ibis to work correctly. Waiting for the dock to arrive. Please, where can I see when the next live Q&A will take place?
@@edvinrushitaj Ah okay. Hope the firmware fixes it. I am hoping to get a regular schedule for the live Q&A's but it hasn't happened yet. My schedule is always changing due to family stuff and client work.
I already have this fantastic lens, and i'm looking to buy an r7 as soon as i can find one... Maybe, in the future, i'm going to buy the sigma 50-100 f1.8. Could this duo be the perfect team for video and photography work, aside from weight?
This meike adapter is certainly very affordable and drop in ND is more efficient than screw on filters. I notice the colour is alittle brownish with the filter? Hope to see your full review on the filter soon. Can't wait to use my 18-35 on the R7... wait... wait... wait... I'll be patience...
I didn’t notice that but it could also be from my grading. I could have spent more time on it. I definitely want to do a rigorous test with the filter though. It’s in my long list of videos. Thanks for watching!
so the Canon speedbooster for the C70 does work, but every time you turn the R7 on you'll get a "this adapter may not be supported" screen before you can start shooting
I feel that canon is missing out by not making an RF to RF speedbooster, I would like to have a FF look with the R7 and still use my RF glass, great video btw, I use my 18-35 and its a Gem !
Thanks! Yeah that would be great, but it's not physically possible based on the flange distance. The only reason you can get a EF-RF Speedbooster or VND adapter is because you are adapting a DSLR lens (EF) to a mirrorless body (RF). There has to be space in there to work properly, which allows companies to put filters in there.
They have different uses. The Sigma 18-35 is a zoom lens, APS-C, larger, heavier, requires an adapter, and doesn't have stabilization. The Canon RF 35 is a prime lens, full frame, has stabilization, is smaller and native.
I am a little confused by your question. Do you mean the full frame equivalence? If so, the R7 has a 1.6x crop factor so multiple the focal lengths by 1.6. I haven’t seen any dead pixels. Thanks for watching!
Hey Josh, I am shooting with a bmpcc 4k Most of the time with the speedbooster and the Sigma 18-35. I'm totally happy with this combo in 90% of the time. But in Low lights it stinks. I also hate how Long it takes to switch to Gimbal. So sometimes i just use my old Canon 80d on my Gimbal or as b-cam. So i want to get a better b-cam and i really love the R7. I am also thinking about the a7sIII but not only the Cam is much more expensive, also i have to get new lenses as well... Would you recommend the R7 as a b-cam or would you rather save money a little longer and directly upgrade to the a7sIII + new lenses?
On a few of those in-and-out of frame tests it seemed like it took a little longer to grab your face than I expected. Do you have it on a kinda chill AF reaction setting, or is that as fast as it gets?
I am using the standard autofocus settings. As I said, the autofocus is not going to be as good as a native RF lens. There is definitely some experimenting to be done with the autofocus settings though.
@@Josh_Sattin gotcha. I’m just so interested to see the ibis and IS in action doing handheld shots. I do documentary style shooting and looking to downsize from my c100 mkii
Hey, thanks for your R7 videos. It looks like a great camera, but I'm still contemplating if it's worth it over the EOS R (I do mainly video, but love its full-frame, although slow, sensor for hobby photography)? I would like to see a comparison (Dynamic Range, All-I vs IPB, Low Light, Autofocus etc) and see if it's worth a few hundred bucks or should I invest that money somewhere else and wait for later cameras?
I don't have an R to compare, but I have owned one and shot MANY hours on it. If I was more than 50% video I would definitely chose the R7 over the R. 10 bit 422, Clog 3, more dynamic range, oversampled image, and better autofocus is a huge win. I don't really care so much about full frame. Most cinema camera are S35. If full frame photo is important to you then maybe keep the R. I wouldn't wait for a camera in the future, buy and use the camera that is best for your work now.
Hi Josh, just stumbled upon your video, would you say for shooting still photos with Canon R7 by using this lense you could get a great autofocus sharpness? You've mentioned in the video it good but not exceptional for videos but for photos will it do better?
I really don't do much photography and that's why I don't talk about it on this channel. The autofocus of this lens will perform very similarly to putting this lens on an APS-C EF mount camera. It should be fine for most things.
I am saving up for the Meike VND adapter, the Canon one is just way out of my budget though I did try to win the only 1 I saw on auction. I think it went for $350(can) but at the time I wasn't sure if I would get an RF camera soni let it go past my $200 bid. I'm figuring it would save me money considering all the ranges of lenses I am planning and getting a threaded filter for everything from 55mm to 90mm is just pricier by comparison.
I literally received mine from eBay as there was a mini sale £140 deliver to the UK. It’s excellent! No doubt you have seen Josh’s comparison to the Canon version. I took the Meike for w spin today and it’s great! Trying not to buy this Sigma 1.8 zoom and use my 24mm 1.4 instead lol
Now if only Canon could make more than 10 of these cameras... The focus breathing on that lens is incredible, so slight. I'm still considering the 24-70 because it works well in both video and photos and doesn't require an adapter, and USM is silent, but $$$$. Focus sound would drive me insane though.
hi sir....i have a question.....what u thunk your r7 with adepter with sigma 18-35 is better pair or sony a6400 with sigma 18-35 is good?.....plzz..reply...
I plan to buy R7.but I want to have any suggestion ,should I have with kit lens or not, (I have ef 10-18, sigma 18-35/f1.8, rf 50 f1.8 already) I work 80% in Video. Thank you.
It seems like you have a pretty solid lens kit already. The one thing the kit lens will give you is a longer reach (18-150). It really depends on what kind of stuff you shoot.
I am a little confused by your question. Yes, you can change your aperture on the lens when using this adapter. Depending on the camera, speedbooster and lens it may or may not automatically adjust the aperture down one stop. Easiest way to tell is to open the aperture up all the way and see how it compares to what the lens is rated for. If you open it up all the way on a 2.8 lens it will either say 2.8 or 2.0.
Totally personal preference. Your combo would be a lot larger, heavier, more expensive and you would also need a screw on ND filter. I am personally not the biggest fan of speedboosters in all situations, they can cause flaring: ruclips.net/video/9KBN11t5RIQ/видео.html I find the IBIS in the R7 pretty solid on it's own. Which lenses and which speedbooster have you tried with the R7?
@@Josh_Sattin That's interesting about the IBIS on the R7... Not the R7 but with the C70 I think the 24-70 f2.8 and 24-105 f4 are great options to consider with a speedbooster. Great AF, Great IS, and you can find them used for a reasonable price nowadays
@@GuillePozzi You were commenting on a R7 video. There are lots of great lens options for the C70. I made a video about that. Feel free to check it out: ruclips.net/video/9iNa2FrVy2I/видео.html
I have the same combo but my IBIS does not work. Super jittery. I've been reading to update the firmware on my Sigma 18-35 so hopefully that fixes it. If you have any insight any help would be amazing!
How does the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 work in photo mode through an adapter on an eos r7 camera? It is the work of the photo in this bundle that is of interest through the base adapter.
I didn't test it in photo mode. I focus on primarily video stuff on this channel, but I would assume it would behave similarly in photo as it does in video.
Hello there I know you say you don’t recommend to use this camera as an A cam but since the R6 overheating problems are more prominent than the overheating in the R7 do you think for a low budget videographer, this camera R7 pare with the tascam audio xlr and let’s say the sigma 18-35 can make it as an A cam if I can’t afford right bow the R5C ??? Also is the line-skipping 60fps mode too bad compare with 1080p for example???
Yes, it could work in that situation as an A cam. I have a C70 so I will be using that as my A cam. I plan on doing a comparison of the different recording modes in a future video. I haven't tested them yet.
@@Josh_Sattin Looking forward to your video, thanks a lot for all your information and the time you put into your videos, you really have great quality content here, and super helpful!!!
That's because the Sigma 18-35 is an APSC lens and the image circle produced from the lens isn't large enough to use with the speedbooster. You need to use Full Frame EF lenses with the speedbooster.
isn't 1.8 gonna look like closer to an 2.8 native apsc lens? so, still not enough to get advantage of r7 sensor size. at 2.8, it would be equivalent to a lumix 1.7 on a panasonic mft body. am i calculating it wrong? if not, then the advantage of apsc size sensor is lost, in that regars. also, how can you call the af (from your test, and what i see in this video) good? it's slow af, at least in this video/settings
Yeah, I think you are a bit confused about how crop sensors work. I made a very detailed video explaining it all: ruclips.net/video/Qcdtq3N6yQI/видео.html Also, I did mention in this video that this was not a review of the lens so I didn't get into testing all of the specifics of the lens, more of an overview and why I like this lens for the R7. There are lots of reviews of the Sigma 18-35 on RUclips. Thanks for watching!
Nice video, I've got the same setup, but I love the sigma 17-50 2.8, and in some tests performs better than my 18-35! Better range and a smaller lens and has stabe (not as good as canon's IS tho). AF isn't perfect but serviceable.
In what tests performs better? Because all the test I've done: sharpness, CA, focus breathing, bokeh quality, manual focus, auto focus...in all of them the 18-35 destroy the 17-50
@@KtmDesignz a stills test I did with both but at their max focal length 35/50 of the same subject - the DOF of the (17-)50 was significantly better/deeper, even though the (18-)35 DOF should have been the winner - according to DOF calculations. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?! DOF is important to me as I do product photography.
@@Sydney_Jones the 17-50 focusing when at the longer end of the focal range can fail. Can't compete with modern canon lenses for AF (i.e. 18-135 NANO). Have only really performed light work so far, more in-depth tests needed to really understand it's overall performance.
There’s no point of adapting this lens. May as well get the 24-70 2.8 with the speed booster. You’ll have the same aperture, no af noise, longer focal range. A 18-35 1.8 on a crop is basically a 29-56 2.8.

I’m hoping I can actually get my R7 soon, had it preordered since the day after the announcement, UK release is going slow
It seems like it's backordered everywhere. Hope you get yours soon!
@@Josh_Sattin thanks man, gives me more reason to watch your r7 videos haha
@@TomWagstaff You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Can I use sigma 18-35 with canon R6 ?
does R6 has crop mode with is turn on when detect apsc lens attached ?
you should think also about canon RF 16mm
You're welcome. That is a bummer. I am not sure what's going on. I didn't experience any issues when I tested this gear.

Hey, did you install the firmware update on the Sigma? If so does it work now?

Does autofocus work on the Meike adapter?
I already have this fantastic lens, and i'm looking to buy an r7 as soon as i can find one... Maybe, in the future, i'm going to buy the sigma 50-100 f1.8. Could this duo be the perfect team for video and photography work, aside from weight?
I haven't personally used the 50-100. I've heard the optics are great and pair well with the 18-35, but it has really bad focus breathing.
Thank your for a great test as always! Very helpful:)
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!

@@Josh_Sattin oh well that’s sad then, I thought that was possible, thanks for explaining !

You’re welcome. That lens is great. Thanks for watching!
Great, helpfull content. How does the AF compares with Meike adapter vs original Canon adapter?
I haven't fully tested and reviewed the Meike adapter. As I mentioned in this video, I will be doing that in the future.
@@Josh_Sattin I know that for video CPL is not very useful but are you planning to maybe include CPL drop-in filter for that adapter in you test?
Do you need a lens support for this lens since it’s kinda big?
What do you think about the r7c that's coming???
It's just a rumor at the moment.
How reliable is the autofocus on the Canon RF to EF adapter?
Sigma 18-35mm or CANON RF 35mm which one is better?
They have different uses. The Sigma 18-35 is a zoom lens, APS-C, larger, heavier, requires an adapter, and doesn't have stabilization. The Canon RF 35 is a prime lens, full frame, has stabilization, is smaller and native.
Hey!
What is the weight of canon r7 with sigma 18-35 1.8??
whats a 18-35 on apsc camera bro? also have you seen dead pixels on the screen?
I am a little confused by your question. Do you mean the full frame equivalence? If so, the R7 has a 1.6x crop factor so multiple the focal lengths by 1.6. I haven’t seen any dead pixels. Thanks for watching!
@@Josh_Sattin yes the equivalence🙏🏾 1.6 crop thanks! Ive just seen others complaining about the pixel issues out the box
Hey Josh,
I am shooting with a bmpcc 4k Most of the time with the speedbooster and the Sigma 18-35.
If this is not wide enough for vlogging, what would you suggest for the same image quality but wider?
Thanks
Here is a video about lens recommendations for the R7: ruclips.net/video/jDsAsNiqQ-A/видео.html
I can’t find NOT ONE person using the RF 35 1.8 IS with the R7 for video 🙄 can you do one?
I don't currently have that lens, but I did make a review on the RF 35 on the C70 a little while ago: ruclips.net/video/J9IgBJ-E-pA/видео.html
@@Josh_Sattin gotcha. I’m just so interested to see the ibis and IS in action doing handheld shots. I do documentary style shooting and looking to downsize from my c100 mkii
YES.

It should be fine for most things.
basically this lens is the reason why many people choosing APC cameras
R7 the best.
Do you thing the clear filter for the Meikes Adapter is nice and sharp and won’t add any blur or anything to stills for professional photography?
I haven't fully tested and reviewed the Meike adapter. As I mentioned in this video, I will be doing that in the future.

Now if only Canon could make more than 10 of these cameras... The focus breathing on that lens is incredible, so slight. I'm still considering the 24-70 because it works well in both video and photos and doesn't require an adapter, and USM is silent, but $$$$. Focus sound would drive me insane though.
Yeah it’s a bummer how backordered the camera is. I think the demand is really high for it though.
hi sir....i have a question.....what u thunk your r7 with adepter with sigma 18-35 is better pair or sony a6400 with sigma 18-35 is good?.....plzz..reply...
I would take the R7 over the a6400 because the R7 has 10 bit video.
@@Josh_Sattin sir can u suggest me a gimbal with your setup?....
I like the DJI gimbals. I would probably go with the RS3 Mini, RS3 or RS3 Pro depending on your setup.
Stupid question but does the aperature also changes with that adapter? I have that lens and thinking to replace my 90D with R7.
I would prefer the 24-70 2.8 with the Speedbooster. That way I get stabilization too (which is the only thing the 18-35 lacks for video)
Totally personal preference. Your combo would be a lot larger, heavier, more expensive and you would also need a screw on ND filter. I am personally not the biggest fan of speedboosters in all situations, they can cause flaring: ruclips.net/video/9KBN11t5RIQ/видео.html
I find the IBIS in the R7 pretty solid on it's own. Which lenses and which speedbooster have you tried with the R7?
@@Josh_Sattin That's interesting about the IBIS on the R7...

How does the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 work in photo mode through an adapter on an eos r7 camera? It is the work of the photo in this bundle that is of interest through the base adapter.

Will a Viltrox Speedbooster or Canon VND Adapter work with Sigma 16mm f1.4 for RUclips Videos on the R7

Also is the line-skipping 60fps mode too bad compare with 1080p for example???

Okay, I've been looking into Sigma's lens line up recently. Have you had a problem with back focusing on either lens?
In what tests performs better? Because all the test I've done: sharpness, CA, focus breathing, bokeh quality, manual focus, auto focus...in all of them the 18-35 destroy the 17-50
