I'm also a big Gary Moore fan. Robertson was sloppy at times, but had his great moments, just like that version. I recommend watching the live versions of Moore from 78, when he returned to Lizzy, as well as Sykes's Live Life version. That's the beautiful thing, we can enjoy so many different versions! Also I'm pretty sure this is a Gary song, it has his fingerprints all over it, a lot of his later ballads are based on that.

I did not know who played that on the live version, but to me, it exudes emotion. It tells the story of love and loss and was exactly what I was feeling. It is a shame the comparison did not go to the next part of this because the uplift in emotion from Robertson is just brilliant. Love, loss, then you move on. Not many musicians can portray that.

Also I think both Robertson and Scott Gorman ( the prettiest man I had ever seen growing up) were two of the most underrated guitarists in rock music history.... !!!
Never understood why neither of them ever get a mention in the top 100 Greatest Guitarist listings ....
But this is easily one of the greatest love songs ever written - up there with 'I want your Love' by Chic ! and as part of the ' Bass players union' Phil has written his Best Bass line - right there ....!

    Nice cover, man!
This guitar solo is quite an interesting example of how different guitarists develop a single idea. Gary Moore recorded the original, then Brian Robertson took Gary's foundation and played his version. Finally, John Sykes came up with his own variant, but based on Robertson's version.
Notably, in Sykes' "final" version, there are phrases from both Gary's and Brian's solos. Although my favorite guitarist is Gary Moore, when I heard Sykes' version, the other versions ceased to exist for me. John achieved perfection. I would place Brian's solo in second place.

Enjoyed your video and comparison very much! It’s fairly well known that during the recording of “Nightlife” Brian Robertson refused to track over the solo Gary Moore had previously laid down and even later admitted he used it as his “template”. I will say that “Robbos” solo on “Live & Dangerous” might be his very best at least on that album. I’ve found it interesting that among the many boot leg recordings that have popped up in the last few years Robertson never once play the L&D solo “note for note” again and during the “Tribute to Philip Lynott” show that Gary Moore lead the effort on when Brian Robertson gets up on stage to do “Still in Love” with Moore he seems to be but a shell of his former feisty Wah-Wah/Echo-Plex self. I got to see Gary Moore when the boys were in the middle of the famous Queen/Lizzy Tour in March of 1977. I went to see “Queen” but went home a Lizzy fan (and have been ever since). IMHO Gary Moore in March of 1977 was as dynamic of a guitar player as there was in the world at that time and the energy level that “Lizzy” as a band threw down in one 55 minute set was utterly breathtaking! Later that September I saw them again on the first leg of the “Bad Reputation” Tour with Robertson back in the fold and although it was still a good show it did not match the sheer intensity of a band that was clearly firing on all cylinders on that night.

Wow I'm jealous of anyone that saw lizzy at the height of their powers great memories to have mate👍😉 Unfortunately I was only 8 when they split so didnt discover them till after Phil had passed when they released the Dedication album. I was lucky enough to catch Gary on the After Hours tour where I stood right in front of him and he tore my face off haha. I managed to catch Robbo live a couple of times in the mid 90s at the Are You Ready show at Wolverhampton Civic and then with the Clan about a year later. From what I have heard Robbo really suffered with stage fright later on and the way he plays with his back to the audience on the One Night In Dublin concert is very telling. Gary is my all time favourite player but Robbo and Scott were Thin Lizzy 🤟

@@craigpriceguitarist Very interesting regarding Robbo’s “stage fight” I did not know that. I can’t argue with you (and the legions really 😂) that the Lynott/Downey/Robertson/Gorham was the ultimate line up however
I felt there was a very natural chemistry that existed between Moore & Lynott and it seemed to affect Scott Gorham as well. When I saw them
the first time with Moore all three of them were just all over the stage interacting with each other continuously their stage presence was utterly contagious (the next day in HS most of the people I knew who were there all agreed that Thin Lizzy owned the stage that night). When I saw them just 7 months later with “Robbo” they sounded great but were overall more subdued (at the time I passed it off to the fact that it was the first show of the first leg of that tour but hindsight I look at it a bit differently: We now know that there was a lot of tension between Lynott & Robbo at the time and his days in Lizzy were numbered). Robertson stayed on his side of the stage (and chain smoked the entire set), did not interact with Lynott or Gorham once, and was not interested in as he likes to say “throwing shapes” (not a term musicians use in my part of the world). I do feel lucky that I did get to see them at their zenith even though I was very young (I’ve read about fans that went to dozens and even hundreds of shows). I’m jealous you got to see Gary Moore he was indeed a very, very, special musician. ♠️♥️♣️♦️🤟

Gary's (rip)solo's were quite a bit better imo.......Brian's weren't bad but sounded fairly 'stock/standard' as compared. Some of Gary's outro solo licks in this are as good as I've ever heard from any guitarist.
Let's not forget 'ol Frankie Miller's vocal contribution's here as well, I love how he and Phil (rip) trade off lines. I like the tempo of the 'Night Life' version as well.....the live one, imo, is a bit slow/ boring as compared ( but still great). My favorite Brian Robertson leads are in 'She Knows'.
I also LOVE the particular sound Gary is getting......the famous '59 Paul was getting a tad more presence and top end......I think he was running a channel jumpered Marshall ( 1959 or 1987 ?) run fairly clean along with a Colorsound Overdriver with its treble turned up fairly high .

Very nicely done sir! Gary is probably the better all-round player, and certainly in blues he's a legend, but Robbo seemed to match better with Scott and on this song he took it to another plane. There's space but it's still fluid, the tone is perfect, and the emotion he wrings from it is beyond compare. Scott's solo ain't bad either (actually it's superb and gives the song another dimension) and their combination at the end is magical.
