Nice cover, man! This guitar solo is quite an interesting example of how different guitarists develop a single idea. Gary Moore recorded the original, then Brian Robertson took Gary's foundation and played his version. Finally, John Sykes came up with his own variant, but based on Robertson's version. Notably, in Sykes' "final" version, there are phrases from both Gary's and Brian's solos. Although my favorite guitarist is Gary Moore, when I heard Sykes' version, the other versions ceased to exist for me. John achieved perfection. I would place Brian's solo in second place.

I know it's essentially the same song, but I wasn't keen on the original solo, but Robbo's version of it has got to be my favourite solo of all time, in my favourite song of all time. I think that (at long last.....) Robbo now appears to be getting the recognition he deserves for his gigantic contribution to Lizzy's guitar sound, during what was - let's face it - Lizzy's best era. I remember going to Stafford Bingley Hall to see them after he left, hoping that some-way he might have re-joined them. Sadly not.

I did not know who played that on the live version, but to me, it exudes emotion. It tells the story of love and loss and was exactly what I was feeling. It is a shame the comparison did not go to the next part of this because the uplift in emotion from Robertson is just brilliant. Love, loss, then you move on. Not many musicians can portray that.

  • @lesliemason1

Funny enough I thought Robbo's version was the original ( probably 'cos I heard his first ) but if I had to choose; I would go with the Brian Robertson version as the better version ... you can really hear the 'heartbreak ' in it... Also I think both Robertson and Scott Gorman ( the prettiest man I had ever seen growing up) were two of the most underrated guitarists in rock music history.... !!! Never understood why neither of them ever get a mention in the top 100 Greatest Guitarist listings .... But this is easily one of the greatest love songs ever written - up there with 'I want your Love' by Chic ! and as part of the ' Bass players union' Phil has written his Best Bass line - right there ....! Masterpiece!

Robbo and Scott were such a great team and when u look at it they only played together for about 5 years they achieved a lot in a short time. Gary's (rip)solo's were quite a bit better imo.......Brian's weren't bad but sounded fairly 'stock/standard' as compared. Some of Gary's outro solo licks in this are as good as I've ever heard from any guitarist. Let's not forget 'ol Frankie Miller's vocal contribution's here as well, I love how he and Phil (rip) trade off lines. I like the tempo of the 'Night Life' version as well.....the live one, imo, is a bit slow/ boring as compared ( but still great). My favorite Brian Robertson leads are in 'She Knows'. I also LOVE the particular sound Gary is getting......the famous '59 Paul was getting a tad more presence and top end......I think he was running a channel jumpered Marshall ( 1959 or 1987 ?) run fairly clean along with a Colorsound Overdriver with its treble turned up fairly high .

    • @craigpriceguitarist

My favourite Robbo lead is the live version of Opium Trail he's was on fire 🔥 I love both players, the Robbo Gorham lineup is certainly the best Lizzy lineup but you can't deny Gary's contributions and what he later achieved. He still had it right up the end sadly the drink got the better of him, that last Montreux concert in 2010 he made lots of mistakes you could tell something was very wrong 😔 I was lucky enough to see him on the After Hours tour at his blues peak just incredible he'll always be my favourite guitarist I don't know of any other player that covers so many styles and owned them all
