      So I’m an incoming bio major too and I placed in arc 35... so I feel like I messed up college before it even started and I’m unable to take it over summer right now. Do you think this will affect me a lot when school starts and do you think I’ll be able to catch up after a few quarters?

      Leyna Cooper Being placed in Arc 35 isn’t the end of the world so don’t worry about it. You will be behind for a little, but you can catch up by taking summer classes.

    I was a premed from psych from ucr got into med school idk how it was from bio but you can def get in if you put in the work here. There are a lot of clinical opportunities in the IE and I recommend you guys take part in them during your later years
    Also with ucr being a large school it’s easy to not be noticed but at the same time if you make an effort you can build relationships with ur professors during office hours and get great rec letters
    Lastly there are a ton of research opportunities most people stay within major so I did psych research but any research is acceptable for med school and helps ur resume
    Take your gpa seriously you can’t necessarily retake ur gpa like u cud ur mcat once u star dropping grades the reality is it will be very hard to get into us med school even with a postbac. Your common core med school classes have a lot of aspiring premeds who quit very soon because of the effort it takes to become a physician so dont be worried when the entire biology class of 300 or so students wants to be a doctor
    Ucrs med school receives far fewer apps than other schools and are very selective so make sure you are getting involved with hpac and all things ucr med school. Also the eap program is great for students who don’t think they can do well on the mcat but it is also very selective
    Good luck to u all and feel free to ask question

    Hi Tri, My son was admitted this fall and I was wondering if you can post all your vlog links so I can see more of it. I am impress with the details of this video and will share this with my son after all his exams and assessment is over. Coming from UK looking at the links UCR seems overwhelming and this video really helps. I also read what not to bring in the dorm. but some videos have water heater in their dorm as well as the furniture. I was thinking of bookshelf a narrow tall one width size of a small ref. Can you make a video on how to choose your classes in freshmen year and units you are allowed to enroll per quarter. Thanks in advance, also congrats on starting your pre-med first year. Keep up the great work and wish you the best.

    • @Tri_Ly
      @Tri_Ly  3 года назад +1

      I am not in honors but I know many who are. I know some of them really don’t like the additional courses required but they choose to stick with it because of the priority registration given to them. Registration timing is an important thing since it can dictate what classes you can and can’t take depending on if you register on time. Hope this helps!

    Hey Tri, thanks so much for the helpful video!
    I have a question about finding a research PI; when is a good time to send the first email? Did you do it during the quarter, the break before, the quarter before..? Thanks!

    • @Tri_Ly
      @Tri_Ly  4 года назад +2

      Ethan Lain I personally waited until after my first year to do research. Because I took classes at UCR over the summer, I had plenty of free time as classes over summer weren’t as demanding as classes during the school year. Professors and PhD students always need help so don’t be afraid to email them no matter what time of the year it is. To find research, all you need to do is find a professor who is doing research in a topic you are interested in. All you have to do is look up “biology” (can be anything depending on your interest) faculty/professors from the UCR website. I recommend emailing plenty of professors at a time as to get more interviews to see if you like their lab or not. Research can take years if you want to be published so definitely make sure you’ll be enjoying your work. Hope this helps and happy holidays Ethan.

    Hi! Your video was so helpful. Do you recommend dorming 1st yr? Is it mandatory for 1st yrs to dorm at UCR? I wanted to live off-campus because I have a family house just a mile away. What do you recommend?

    • @Tri_Ly
      @Tri_Ly  4 года назад +1

      Vivian Ha If you live only a mile away, then I don’t think it’s worth it to pay to dorm. Yes there is the experience of living in the dorms, but a big part of living on campus is how convenient it is. Your house only being a mile away checks that box already. Dorm life helps expand your social circle, but if you get involved in let’s say a club early, it shouldn’t be a problem to find your circle of peers. Currently as a second year I’m living in an apartment walking distance from campus and I feel like I spend most of my time in the day on campus rather than at home. I think what will end up happening for you is that you’ll find some friends who live on campus and end of spending most of your days on campus/in dorms with them where you’ll get that “dorm experience” so no need to worry about that aspect.

    Hi, first of this video was very helpful. I am currently a senior who was accepted into UCR and had a couple questions regarding the Honors program. I got an invite to apply and just wanted to ask what is the major difference between being in honors and not and if it is a huge deal or not. Also, I was not able to find the study guide links for the MAE, I find the website itself for the placement but I couldn't find the study resources and it would be helpful if you could link them:)

    • @Tri_Ly
      @Tri_Ly  3 года назад

      First off congrats on getting into honors! It is a little bit more work since you have to take additional classes that non-honors students have to take. A benefit of honors is earlier registration which is crucial when trying to get a good professor or even just classes. Regarding the MAE, I believe the study resources are given to you when you create an account with ALEKS PL. It’s a different process from when I took it I assume due to COVID-19.

      @Tri_Ly  2 года назад

      3.5 isn’t as bad as you think. UCR’s som class of 2025 has an average science GPA of 3.6. The app is very wholistic and if you are worried about your GPA, you can aim for compensating it with a good MCAT. Definitely check out Reddit as people will openly discuss what schools they got into with the stats they had. As for extracurriculars, I would say to try and get involved in what you are passionate about as it’s your last year to take advantage of the opportunities around campus and off campus.

    Hi there! I’m currently a UCSD neurobio major who is thinking about transferring to UCR because I feel like I would do better there.
    Were your lectures recorded/podcasted?
    Are classes difficult to get?
    And what was your living situation if you don’t mind me asking… I would like to live at the glen mor and I’m wondering what my chances might be of getting placed there if I put that as a choice on my housing app.
    :)

    • @Tri_Ly
      @Tri_Ly  2 года назад

      Some classes were recorded but personally I relied on lecture slides posted online. I felt like from my experience most professors in my upper divs tested from material that was covered on their slides. There were some professors that had really bad slides but I’m sure you can gauge what to expect from people’s reviews on rate my professor. In regards to registration, I didn’t have the earliest slots in the first couple of years however I ended up getting earlier registration times my 3rd and 4th year. I am not sure about glenmor housing but I believe the odds are better than they were before since UCR recently built North District. I lived at Grandmarc my second year which was about 800ish a month then moved into a house for my 3rd and 4th which was about 500 a month.

    hi!! i'm an incoming freshman at UCR and was just a little confused about the MAE. if I'm exempt from taking it because of a passing score(3+) on the AP Calc AB exam and thus place into math 7B, will this go against me in medical school admissions? or will it still be okay to use this credit and not take the MAE?

    • @Tri_Ly
      @Tri_Ly  4 года назад

      Smita Jandir For UCR you have to take 2 quarters of calc and one quarter of stats. If you placed in 7B you’d take math 46 for your second quarter of calc. Some med schools differ in their requirements but what’s stated above accounts for getting a degree as well as applying for UCR SOM. Hope this helps :)

      Eun-Kyung Lang The MAE is required unless you passed the AP Calc exam. There is also a reading placement test if you did not take any AP English tests. As of right now I’m working on building up a strong app to apply next cycle. I took my MCAT last September but got a 505. I didn’t do as well as I wanted in the sections I considered “easier” so I plan on studying to retake this coming January. I was thinking about making an update video discussing my stats and extracurriculars during my 4 years if that sounds like something you would want to see.

    Do everyone take the Mae? Like history major?

    • @Tri_Ly

      I do believe all majors must take this exam. The only exemption would be if you tested out of if with your AP Calc score.

      @@Tri_Ly hello! i took the ib route instead of ap at my hs and i scored a 5 for ib math. ucr ap/ib scores take the 5 and would place me in math 7b i think. does this mean i would skip out on the MAE?

    I got placed in math 9A and i don’t exactly know what that means or what to expect.

      lema Math 9A is pretty much equivalent to Calculus AB. If you are planning to apply to medical school, you need to take 3 quarters worth of math at a college level and 2 quarters of Calc which will be 9A and 9B for you.

      Justme Yram Although UCR is a great school, it doesn’t matter what school you go to but rather how hard you work to achieve the career you want.

      Melanie Reynolds That’s okay! As long as you keep up your GPA throughout the year!

    • @Tri_Ly

      Justme Yram UCR will still be a quarter system. It goes by fast, but you have the option to take more classes throughout the year which I enjoy.

    What is your major?

      Love Struck I’m a biology major!

      @@Tri_Ly I will be going to UCR soon and was unsure if biology is a good major for pre-med or biochemistry.

    • @Tri_Ly
      @Tri_Ly  4 года назад +1

      Love Struck I choose biology because I did not know much about Bio-Chemistry prior to attending UCR. If you are specifically going pre-med I would recommend biology because many of classes needed to apply to med school and to graduate as a bio major are basically the same. If you major in something else, you’d have to take extra upper div courses that med schools don’t require but you’d need them for your major. In the end choose the major that interests you since as your classes will revolve around that initial decision :)

      Advice Queen I wasn’t completely sure about this fact when I said it but that’s what my friend who attends UCLA told me. I also looked up the acres of both schools and UCLA’s campus is 419 acres while UCR’s is 1,112 acres. The data came from Wikipedia so who knows lol
