    I’m not one for waste and in permaculture, we aim to establish ecosystems that work together. So when my garden pests were threatening the health of my young mulberry trees, I got to work.
    The chickens rejected this cutting full of nasty worms, but the blue gills that we added to our pond just a month ago LOVED them!
    Unintentionally growing fish food was done was a win for this homesteader!

    That's the stuff nightmares are made of. Great way to deal with them though. I see your son also inherited a double dose of funny from the pair of you 🤣

    Since we don’t have a pond, but we have webworms, I’ll send ours up to y’all next year to feed to your fish 😂

    We have a problem with the bag worms or web worms on our pecan trees, but alas, we don’t have a tank, or fish, to toss them into! Your solution is genius!

    If they are like tent caterpillars, the web is SO sticky, I can’t imagine the chickens being able to work their way through it

      Good point. We’ve seen people open up the web and then birds go for it

      I tried that once - that’s why I know how sticky they are 😮

    If you leave them they don´t hurt the tree or bush. It comes back again next year. It has a cycle of years where it happens, but it is not every year. We have them here in Norway also.

      I’m with you. We aren’t so much looking to destroy them as much as maximize them. I think in most gardens, they’re a neutral pest. But since we feed our animals the leaves and not just enjoy the berries, we can do the most by removing them. The fish get a snack and our cows still have plenty of leaves.

    Grooooss! Those are copying web worms. We get those here in NW Oregon too.
    Black stuff is poop...aka frass. The moths they turn into lay the eggs.
    Beautiful colors on the fish. Watching feasting on the web worms is so satisfying. Future dinners. 😂

    My chickens eat them. Tall webs I will open the web and allow the native birds to feast!

      Oh Gail that is awesome to know! Tomorrow I might try an experiment of opening the web and shaking the worms in a bucket.
      I would much rather get some more eggs than fish! 🤣🤣

    Better idea than burning them. Neat.

    They are actually butterfly grubs.

    • @BetterTogetherLife
      @BetterTogetherLife  Месяц назад +1

      Well, I wouldn’t mind that. But by doing a search online this is what I found:
      The worms you're describing are likely fall webworms (Hyphantria cunea). These caterpillars form webs in the branches of trees, including mulberry trees, and are commonly seen in late spring to early summer. They feed on the leaves within these webs, which can cause significant defoliation.
      Fall webworms turn into moths. Specifically, they become small, white moths that may have some black spots on their wings. These moths lay eggs on the leaves of trees, which then hatch into the caterpillars that create the characteristic webs.
      So I’m not sure if the ones we are having turn into butterflies. Most likely they turn into moths.

    Some of them flew here :) never seen them before, but they were on some fig leaves, I would like to know what they are. I cooked them before throwing them in our GFT bin. hehe

    • @BetterTogetherLife
      @BetterTogetherLife  Месяц назад

      They’re called web worms. And they’re larvae of the white moth in our area. But I know a lot of different moths make this kind of web. And different moths lay this kind of webworm according to the season. I think they look worse than they really are.

      @@BetterTogetherLife Thanks: I'd rather not have them as they also eat the leaves of the plant.

    Those are Yponomeuta, they regulate themselves and are not a big problem. No need to kill them...

    • @BetterTogetherLife
      @BetterTogetherLife  Месяц назад

      I agree. They really do seem to regulate themselves. And once they’re at this stage, they won’t do much more damage if we only use our mulberry for berries.
      But we also feed animals with the leaves. So we sent the worms to feed fish and the cows still have green leaves!
